T. Elizabeth Brinsfield

CAMBRIDGE - T. Elizabeth Brinsfield, 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 at the Dorchester General Hospital.

Ms. Brinsfield was a retired Dorchester County teacher.

Surviving is a brother, Jennings H. Brinsfield of Baltimore; a sister, Olive Brinsfield Albrecht of Towson; seven nephews and two nieces: W. Melvin Turner Jr. and his wife, Joyce of Cambridge, J. Murrill Turner of Belair, Jeane Kohler and her husband, Bill of Fairbanks, Alaska, Charles Brinsfield and his wife, Tina of Potomac, Charles Cavanaugh and his wife, Karen of Crisfield, Jack Cavanaugh of Harrisonburg, Va., Barbara Cavanaugh of Harrisonburg, Va., Ron Albrecht and his wife, Sue of Media, Pa., Doug Albrecht and his wife, Marie of Baltimore. Also surviving are numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Roger L. Anthony

PALMYRA, Va. - Roger Lee Anthony, 52, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001 in a Charlottesville hospital.

He was born July 15, 1949, in Denton, son of the late Preston "Chub" and Effie Ott Anthony. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Preston Thomas Anthony Jr.

Mr. Anthony retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Anthony of Palmyra, who is a former resident of Hooper Island; one son, Roger Lee Anthony Jr. of Palmyra; one brother, Wayne Anthony of Denton and one sister, Shirley Daffin of Denton.

The family received friends Friday at the Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store. A short funeral service followed conducted by the Rev. Tim Hull.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today at the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Denton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Faith Fellowship Church, 23714 Collins Road, Preston, MD 21655.

Roselle R. P. Curtis

FEDERALSBURG - Roselle "Rose" Ruth Pinckens Curtis, 75, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Born Oct. 29, 1935, in Federalsburg, she was the daughter of the late Lacy and Zilda Johnson Pinckens. She had attended Lockerman High School. She worked at variously processing jobs including the John Wright Cannery, Whiteley's and Draper Foods. She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Federalsburg.

She married the late George Curtis.

She is survived by one daughter, Naomi Flowers of Federalsburg; four brothers, Blakely Pinckens, Philetus Pinckens and Andrew Pinckens of Federalsburg and Marion Pinckens of Bridgeville, Del.; and two sisters, Cleo Beulah and Jackie Pinckens of Federalsburg.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Federal Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 8 tonight at the church.

Timothy L. Ewing

FEDERALSBURG - Timothy Lee Ewing, 23, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, in Denton as a result of a motor vehicle accident.

Born Aug. 18, 1978, in Milford, Del., he was the son of Shirley Warren Dardas of Princess Anne and Milton W. Ewing Sr. of Federalsburg. He worked as a landscaper. He was a member of Park Lane Church of God in Federalsburg.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Sharon Ewing of Federalsburg; a close friend, Jack White of Princess Anne; one sister, E. Marie Ewing of Princess Anne; one stepbrother, Shawn Hughes of Federalsburg; three nieces, Samantha, Jasmine and Searra; his maternal grandmother, Doris Marie Warren of Federalsburg; his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Marie Ewing of Federalsburg; and his fiancee, Brandy Scarbrough of Ridgely.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. The Rev. Dennis Foster will officiate. Burial will follow at Bloomery Cemetery in Smithville.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Caroline County Unit, P.O. Box 505, Denton, MD 21629.

Sallie G. Walsch

SEAFORD, Del. - Sallie Gertrude Spedden Walsch, 101, died Thursday night, Oct. 25, 2001, at Methodist Manor House, where she had been a resident since Dec. 1988.

Born Jan. 4, 1900, in the Neck District, Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Winfield Price Spedden and Gertrude Marshall Spedden. She was a seamstress by hobby. A former resident of Baltimore, she was active at Riverside United Methodist Church.

On June 25, 1925, she married Frederick Alexander Walsch. He died March 5, 1995.

She is survived by one son, Alan Frederick Walsch, of Methodist Manor House, Seaford; one sister-in-law, Clara Spedden; 10 nieces, Gertrude Marshall, Clara Colonna, Virginia Diggs, Eleanor Ruark, Mary Lee Johnson, Jean McWilliams, Patricia Tolley, Barbara Wilson, Betty Smith and Eleanor Wheatley; three nephews, Fred Spedden Jr., Sewell Spedden Jr. and Phillip Spedden; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were three sisters, Reita Spedden, Gladys Marshall and Virginia Colonna; two brothers, Sewell Spedden and Fred Spedden; and one nephew, Donald Spedden.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., in Cambridge. Pastor Jerry P. Denton will officiate. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Frederick Johnson, Harold Ruark, Warren McWilliams, Phillip Spedden, Fred Spedden and Earl Marshall.

Betty M. Slacum

CAMBRIDGE - Betty Magrogan Slacum, 77, passed away at Mallard Bay Care Center Saturday evening, Oct. 27, 2001, after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 5, 1924, in Ridgely, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Newton Magrogan. She had attended schools in Ridgely, graduating from Ridgely High School in 1941.

She operated Slacum's Beauty Shop in Cambridge from 1958 to 1986. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church. She had been in failing health for several months and had been a patient at the Mallard Bay Care Center for one month before she passed away.

On May 20, 1947, she married Donald G. Slacum.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lois S. Lane and Leon Lane of East New Market, and Dona S. Roderick and Kenneth Roderick of Chestertown; five grandchildren, Lana Lane, Catherine Lane, Leon Lane III, Donald Roderick and Elizabeth Roderick; one brother, Robert Magrogan of Ridgely; two sisters, Charlotte Pappa of Wilmington, Del., and Dorothy McBride of Wilmington, Del.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Dulin, Ruth Roe and Jean Woodward.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Refuge of Sinners. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery near Hurlock.

Pallbearers will be Mark Hurley, Bruce Hurley, Marvel Woodward, Marty McBride, Leon Lane III and Kenneth Roderick.

The family will receive friends 7:30 to 9 tonight at the Thomas Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service will be held 8 p.m.

Elizabeth B. Dail

CAMBRIDGE - Elizabeth Bennett Dail, 87, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Dorchester General Hospital, where she had been a patient since Oct. 20.

Born Dec. 10, 1913, in Cassons Neck, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Lena Thomas Bennett.

On Dec. 10, 1931, she married W. Seward Dail. They resided in the Neck District until Mr. Dail died Nov. 14, 1994. She then resided with her daughter and son-in-law in Cambridge. She had been a resident of Chesapeake Woods Center since 1995.

She assisted her husband, who was a farmer. Together, they owned Peace Farm at Cassons Neck. The farm was sold in 1989 and is now known as Riverton Farm.

She actively participated in the Parent-Teacher Association and other school functions, as well as community plays. During World War II, she worked as a volunteer plane spotter at the Hudson outpost. She served as vice president of the Neck District Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary when it was organized Sept. 5, 1951. During the 1970s and '80s, she became an Avon representative. She enjoyed meeting new people and making friends.

Since her youth, she was active in the church and its functions, attending Spedden United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the True Blue Sunday school class, the choir and the W.S.C.S. In 1969, she joined the Church of the Nazarene, remaining a faithful and active member until failing health. She and her husband made regular visits to shut-ins and residents at local nursing homes.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bettye Mae and Ronald S. Meredith Sr.; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Ron and Janice Meredith, Kathy M. Marker of Omaha, Neb., Deborah and Dean Jensen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jeffrey Sr. and Mary Meredith of Seaford, Del., Sue and David Weatherwax of Clay City, Ind., Karen and Keith Turner of Cambridge and Rhonda and William Fleming Sr. of Cambridge; 12 great-grandchildren, Rachel and Robert Meredith, Stacey, Corey and Jason Kinman, Joshua Barker, Jeffrey and Jessica Meredith, Ryan Turner, Kristen Mullins and Will and Madison Fleming; one sister, Louise Wilcox; one sister-in-law, Hannah Bennett; and three nieces, Laura Lynn Howard of Hudson, Kay Penn of Bel Air and Dale Durst of N.S.B., Fla.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two infant children; one son, William B. Dail, who died Oct. 26, 1962; one brother, Robert Bennett, who died Feb. 1, 1999; and one brother-in-law, C. Olie Wilcox, who died Dec. 1, 1997.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene at Hambrooks Boulevard and Sandy Hill Road in Cambridge. The Rev. William K. George will officiate. Burial will follow in Seward-Dail Family Cemetery in Cassons Neck.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Meredith Sr., Keith Turner, David Weatherwax, William Fleming Sr., Ryan Turner and David Whitby.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Meredith Sr., Keith Turner, David Weatherwax, William Fleming Sr., Ryan Turner and David Whitby.

Edward C. Hobbs

CAMBRIDGE - Edward Chynoweth Hobbs, 88, died Thursday afternoon, Oct. 25, 2001, at his home.

Born Aug. 16, 1913, at Ft. McPherson, Ga., he was the son of the late Horace P. Hobbs and Edna Chynoweth Hobbs. He was a graduate of the USMA Class of 1937 at West Point. He served in the 21st Infantry, Schofield Barracks in Hawaii from 1937 to 1938. He was honorably discharged in 1939 with the rank of second lieutenant. He was a surveyor for the City of Cambridge from 1955 to 1968.

On Oct. 10, 1947, he married the former Ruth Childs. She died March 10, 1988.

In 1955, he and his wife moved to the Cambridge area. They were residents of Rhodesdale for many years.

He is survived by one son, Charles E. Hobbs of Cambridge; one daughter, Emilie J. Hobbs of Cambridge; one brother, Horace P. Hobbs Jr. of Lincolnville, Maine; and the family with whom he had resided for the past several years, Donna and Joe Willey and their children. The Willeys have cared for Mr. Hobbs and his two children, whereas they have been considered family.

Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were one sister, Katherine Hobbs; and one brother, William B. Hobbs.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. today at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery Chapel near Hurlock. The Rev. Nathaniel W. Pierce, Rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, will officiate.

Mildred E. Caprioglio

SNOW HILL - Mildred E. Caprioglio, 91, passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. 245, 2001 at the Snow Hill Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Ettore "Hector" Caprioglio.

She was born near Vienna on Oct. 10, 1910, the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Mary Elizabeth Lowe Layton.

Mrs. Caprioglio was raised in the Salem area and attended the public schools at Vienna. For most of her adult life she made her home in New York City and in 1965 moved back to the Salem area of Dorchester County. Her husband passed away in August of 1967. For 13 years, she resided at the John B. Parsons Home in Salisbury.

She is survived by two nieces, Louise Norris of Salisbury and Clara McKnett of Cambridge; four nephews, Robert Layton of Salisbury, Joseph H. Layton of Mardela Springs, Ollie and Walter Layton of Hurlock and a special cousin, Edna Curry of Largo, Fla.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Caprioglio was preceded in death by four brothers, William H. Layton, Joseph H. Layton, Robert Layton and Ollie Layton.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's P.E. Cemetery in Vienna by the Rev. Shirley A. Evans. There will be no calling hours.

Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church, c/o Barbara Hurley, 4050 Mill Road, Vienna, MD 21869.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Rhoda B. Tull

FEDERALSBURG - Rhoda B. Tull, 95, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.

She was born Jan. 21, 1906 near Eldorado in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Herman F. and Caroline Martino Bradley. Her husband, Ernest William Tull died May 22, 1965.

Mrs. Tull was a Federalsburg High School graduate. She was a homemaker. She was a former member of the Wesley United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Homemaker's Club. In 1970 she transferred to Union United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ruth Circle and the Wednesday Craft Club.

Mrs. Tull is survived by a nephew whom she raised, Peyton E. Bradley of Federalsburg and other nieces and nephews, Stuart Bradley of Seaford, Del., Barbara Phillips of Salisbury, Melvin Bradley and John Bradley, both of Federalsburg and Norma Era of Secretary; great nephews: Scott Bradley of Seaford, J. R. Bradley of Easton and great-niece, August Bradley Cave of Federalsburg. She is also survived by great-great-nephews and great-niece Conner Bradley and Colton Bradley, both of Seaford, Katelyn Bradley, Nicholas Bradley and Christopher Bradley, all of Easton and Austen Cave of Federalsburg and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. today at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Federalsburg with the Rev. David Heistand officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Wesley UM Church, P.O. Box 298, Hurlock, MD 21643 or the Union United Methodist Church, 301 N. Main St., Federalsburg, MD 21632.

Sewell J. Harding Jr.

COKEBURY - Sewell J. Harding Jr., 78, died at his home on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001.

He was born Dec. 22, 1922 near Hurlock, the son of the late Sewell J. Harding Sr. and Ada G. Bailey Harding.

Mr. Harding was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Panama. He worked all of his life as a farmer growing truck crops and grain. He was a member of the Dorchester County Farm Bureau.

Mr. Harding is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Cordrey Harding, whom he married on Feb. 27, 1943; three daughters, Connie Swafford of Cambridge, Bonnie Osterman of Federalsburg and Diann Mason of Cokebury; four grandchildren, Paige Adams, Danny Swafford Jr., Hank Osterman and Chris Mason and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Osterman, Logan Adams and Taylor Swafford. He is also survived by a brother, Percy M. Harding of Federalsburg and two sisters, Lucille Gadow of Preston and Doris Lee Adams of El Paso, Texas and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Elva R. Noble preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Revs. John Nalley and Doug Albert, officiating. Burial will follow in Cokesbury Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Pallbearers will be Danny Swafford Jr., Hank Osterman, Christopher Mason, Phillip Wheatley, Mark Adams and Lee Cordrey.

The family has suggested that donations be made in his memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD.

Viola M. Hill

CAMBRIDGE - Viola M. Hill, 92, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at the Mallard Bay Care Center.

She was born Nov. 4, 1910 in Robbins, a daughter of the late John W. and Willie Bramble Mills.

Mrs. Hill attended school in Dorchester County. She was married to John Wesley Hill, who passed away on Aug. 16, 1977.

She worked at Rob Roy for a number of years and later she worked at Bumble Bee Seafood. After retiring, Mrs. Hill did some private home sitting. She enjoyed crocheting.

Mrs. Hill is survived by four daughters: Peggy Ross of Cambridge, Janet Travers of Brownsville, Texas, Jean Flater of Cambridge, Jane Turner of Cambridge; a son, Jimmy Gatton of New Jersey; several grandchilden and great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Charles Hubbard; two sisters and four brothers.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dorchester Memorial Park with the Rev. J. Edward King officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Charlotte A. Weiss

SALISBURY - Charlotte A. Weiss, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Easton. Mrs. Weiss was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" Weiss in 1999.

She is survived by a stepson, William "Bill" Weiss of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Patricia Nespor and her husband, Tony of Baltimore; two stepgrandchildren, Jamie and Nicole Nespar and a sister, Betty B. Nelson of Cambridge.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Walter Reuschling will officiate. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Easton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist St., Salisbury, MD 21803 or Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Lucille S. Glover

COCKEYSVILLE - Lucille S. Glover, 85, formerly of Cambridge, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2003 at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

She was born April 20, 1918 in Asbestos, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of the late Clyde Henry and Bess Vivian Shoemaker.

She had graduated from high school in Canada and later received her B.S. degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. On Aug. 17, 1940 she was married to James Edward Glover.

Mrs. Glover had been a school teacher in Dorchester County and also in New Jersey, teaching home economics and science. Mr. Glover passed away on Feb. 3, 1972.

In 1968 Mr. and Mrs. Glover sponsored Enrique Monfort, who was a foreign exchange student from Valencia, Spain whom Mrs. Glover considered her "Spanish Son."

Mrs. Glover was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, Salvation Army Board, Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary, Cambridge Homemakers and Cambridge Yacht Club. She had also been a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Leader. She had made her home in Cockeysville for the past 18 months.

Her survivors include one daughter, Gail G. Elliott and her husband, Dr. William D. Elliott Jr. of Cambridge; two sons, James R. Glover and his wife, Connie Glover of White Hall and David C. Glover of Cambridge; seven grandchildren, William D. Elliott III, Robert A. Elliott, Anne Elliott Kelly, Amy Glover, Sara Glover, Kate Price and Jake Glover; 10 great-grandchildren and five nieces and two nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Shoemaker.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Kevin E. English officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Dr. William D. Elliott Jr., William D. Elliott III, Robert Elliott, Jake Glover, Dean Price and Stephen Kelly.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
