Virginia L. Brohawn

WINCHESTER, Va. - Virginia Lee Brohawn, 86, passed away March 6, 2002 at her home with her dog "Pepper" at her side. Mrs. Brohawn was a former resident of Cambridge and Lewes, Del.

She was born Nov. 15, 1915 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Russell and Essie Williams Jarrett Jones.

Ms. Brohawn attended Cambridge High School and worked most of her life in the medical field as an LPN, a dental assistant and private duty nurse. In her later years, she enjoyed jazz concerts and lunching with the ladies at various Eastern Shore restaurants. She will also be remembered for her love of animals.

She is survived by one sister, Anita J. Walker of Seaford, Del.; two nieces, Donna Lee Stike of Nottingham, Pa. and Patricia Ann Fox of Winchester, with whom she made her home; two nephews, Russell Eugene (Scott) Walker of Northeast and Dr. William Jarrett Walker of Dayton, Ohio and six great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cambridge Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A.

Bartlett Addendum

CAMBRIDGE - Services for Eldridge E. Bartlett Sr., 74, who passed away Friday, May 31, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. The eulogy will be provided by his daughter, Deborah Cannalito. Inurnment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Deborah Cannalito, Eldridge E. Bartlett Jr., Roy Lively Sr. and Roy Lively Jr.

In addition to the survivors are a daughter-in-law, Anita Bartlett and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials offerings may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Lorraine Dickerson, 10 Harris Drive, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Bertha S. Balderson

CAMBRIDGE - Bertha S. Balderson, 85, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. She was the wife of the late William N. Balderson.

She was born Feb. 4, 1917 in the Drawbridge area of Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Carl and Carrie Kircher Kuebler.

Mrs. Balderson was raised and attended public schools in Dorchester and for most of her life lived in Cambridge. On Dec. 25, 1942 she married Mr. Balderson and for a number of years worked as a retail sales clerk at Leggett Department Store in Cambridge. Mr. Balderson passed away on Dec. 13, 1991 and since June of 1999 she had resided at Mallard Bay.

Mrs. Balderson was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ.

She is survived by one son, William H. Balderson of Cambridge; one sister, Louise Larmore of Princess Anne; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Joan P. Evans. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour preceding the service. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 900 Peachblossom Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Lyda Ruth Brummell

FEDERALSBURG - Lydia Ruth Evans "Lady B." Brummell, 80, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2002 at The Pines in Easton after a short illness.

She was born June 16, 1921 in Finchville, the eighth of 10 children born to the late Sadie Ricketts Evans and Asbury Evans.

She received her early education in Dorchester County and graduated from Lockerman High School in Denton with the class of 1938.

She was married to Oliver D. Brummell who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Brummell held various jobs, including employment in the Caroline School District and Upper Shore Aging. In most recent years, she worked with Bennie Smith Funeral Homes.

She became a Christian at an early age at Mt. Hope UM church in Finchville. She later became a member of Zion UM Church in Federalsburg. She was active in her church as an usher, choir member, United Methodist Women and past Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Brummell was a member of the Just Us Club.

She is survived by a son, Oliver of Federalsburg; a daughter, Gail of Baltimore; one grandson, William; one son-in-law, William Wells; two sisters, Agnes Elliott of Williamstown, N.J. and Sadie Johnson of Denton and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Brummell was preceded in death by seven siblings, Pauline, Naomi, Jeanette, Seville, Frank, Hazel and Esther.

A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the church in Federalsburg. Burial will follow in Federal Hill Cemetery in Federalsburg.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Hurlock.

Bertha S. Balderson

CAMBRIDGE - Bertha S. Balderson, 85, passed away early Wednesday morning, June 5, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. She was the wife of the late William N. Balderson.

Nabb Addendum

CAMBRIDGE - Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church for Edward Harwood Nabb Sr. who died at his home on Sunday, June 2, 2002.

Mr. Nabb was a prominent Cambridge attorney.

Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Douglas Ridley. Burial will follow in Christ Church Graveyard.

Samuel J. Smith

CAMBRIDGE - Samuel J. Smith, 88, passed away early Thursday morning, June 6, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital. He had been in the local hospital since Monday.

He was born Jan. 8, 1914 in Hurlock, the son of the late John Wesley and Helen Mumberger Smith. Mr. Smith was raised and attended public schools in Hurlock, although for a few years his family lived in Wilmington, Del.

Mr. Smith was a mechanic by trade and as a young man he went to work at the Phillips Packing Co. and later retired from National Can Co. Upon retirement from National Can. Mr. Smith worked as custodian at the East New Market School and later the East Cambridge Elementary School.

He was married to the former Helen Emma Collins on July 15, 1933. She passed away on Feb. 3, 1989.

He enjoyed gardening, working outside and was active bicycling and jogging until he was over 80.

Mr. Smith is survived by one daughter, Paulette Travers and one son, William E. Smith, both of Cambridge; eight grandchildren: Melinda L. Smith, Gary E. Smith, Darrell D. Johnson Jr., Donald L. Johnson, Randall J. Travers, James F. McCarter Jr., Timothy A. McCarter, Brian D. McCarter; one sister, Sally Hoffman of Dowingtown, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Kay F. McCarter and five sisters and two brothers.

A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. Dale L. Brown. Burial will follow in Unity-Washington Cemetery in Hurlock. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Shirley Kailianu, 8 Somerset Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Pallbearers will be grandsons of Mr. Smith.

Anna S. Johnson

TAYLORS ISLAND - Anna Stanley Johnson, 89, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.

She was born July 26, 1912 in Taylors Island, the daughter of the late Asbury Stanley and Martha Virginia Clark.

Mrs. Johnson attended the public schools in Taylors Island and graduated from F. D. St. Clair High School. In her early years, she was employed at various factories in the Dorchester County area. She retired as a food technician for the Dorchester County Public School System and received certificates in knitting and food management.

She was an active member of Lane's United Methodist Church. She was also active and active member of Progressive of Dorchester Temple 224, I.B.P.O.E. of W for many years.

Mrs. Johnson's hobby was collecting antiques and dolls.

She is survived by numerous relatives, an aunt and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Ernest, Walter, George, Charles, Richard and Reginald Stanley.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lane's UM Church, Taylors Island with the Rev. Wallace Greene Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge is handling the arrangements.

Irma M. Stafford

RHODESDALE - Irma Mae Stafford, 92, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at Genesis Eldercare - Salisbury Nursing Center.

She was born Jan. 26, 1910 in Farmville, Va., the daughter of the late Daniel and Cora Randall.

Mrs. Stafford attended the public schools in Farmville. She worked as a field worker for different farmers in the area.

Upon meeting and marrying Moses L. Stafford, the couple made their home in Rhodesdale raising her great-nephew, Ivy Thompson, as their own. She attended Zoar UM Church in Reid's Grove.

In addition to her great-nephew, Mrs. Stafford is survived by a sister, Lucille (Jerome) Richardson of Baltimore; a niece, Catherine Pinder and nephew, Ivy Stafford, both of Cambridge; five great-nieces, Wanda Thompson of Mardela Springs, Regina Thompson, Faustine (Freddie) Dennis, Tracie (Ricky) Lake and Sharon Pinder, all of Cambridge; three great-nephews, Gregory and Charles Thompson, Milbourne (Diane) Stafford, all of Cambridge; considered as grandchildren: three great-great-nieces, Sominia Freeman of Italy, Jamilla Thompson of Salisbury, Nyazina Thompson of Severn and one great-great-nephew, Jamil Thompson of Salisbury. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Keiford Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Reid's Grove Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Dorothy L. Malone

CAMBRIDGE - Dorothy Lee Malone, 48, passed away Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born Mach 9, 1954 in Millen, Ga., daughter of the late Stanley Malone Sr. and Freddie Ruth Mickens. At a young age the family moved to Grasonville. She attended public schools in Dorchester and Queen Anne counties.

Mrs. Malone is survived by three daughters, Latoyia Trader, Latisha Malone and Ebony Trader of Hurlock; six brothers: Stanley Malone (Jessie) of Grasonville, Jim Malone and Melvin Malone of Federalsburg, Robert Malone (Lorraine) of Laurel, Del., Calvin Malone of Royal Oak and Carl Malone of Cambridge; three sisters: Inez Warrick (Ernest), Betty Gregory (Harvey) and Barbara Malone, all of Hurlock. She is also survived by eight nephews, five nieces, one uncle, one aunt and a number of cousins.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Briane's AME Church in Grasonville. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Salisbury.

Ruth L. Cannon

TRAPPE - Ruth Lillian Cannon, 85, formerly of Chestertown, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at her home.

She was born June 10, 1916 in Crocheron, the daughter of the late Marcellus Claude and Lillian Gladys McGlaughlin Cannon.

Ms. Cannon attended school in Crocheron and graduated from high school there in 1931. She then attended and graduated from Washington College in Chestertown in 1935 at the age of 19. During that time, Ms. Cannon worked a few small jobs to pay for her tuition.

She took a job with the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C., a career which she retired from in 1968. After retirement, Ms. Cannon, traveled extensively and was also very involved with the Republican Party.

After retirement, she also cared for a close friend, the late Elma Moulton Saunders. Ms. Cannon had resided in Chestertown for 10 years prior to moving to Trappe.

She is survived by a brother, Robert C. Cannon of Cambridge; a nephew, Richard D. and his wife, Jennifer A. Cannon of Trappe, along with nieces and nephews, Kristin D. Cannon, Cody P. Cannon and Tana M. Todd.

Funeral services were held June 5 at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kent County Humane Society, P.O. Box 352, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Melvin R. Conaway

HURLOCK - Melvin Rovenson "Mr. Big Stuff" Conaway passed away June 6, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.

Born in Hurlock July 24, 1934, he was the son of the late John Cephas and Ruth Ella Conaway. He was educated in the Dorchester County Public School System.

He was employed for 27 years at Continental Can Co. and enjoyed working as a disc jockey along the Eastern Shore and for the Cambridge radio station with radio personality Mr. Cool. He was a member of the NAACP.

He was married to the former Anna Green, with whom he had seven children.

He is survived by five sons, Tony Green of Princess Anne, Eugene Conaway and wife Mary of Salisbury, Marty Conaway and wife Lorraine of Rocky Mount, N.C., Edward Conaway and wife Ruth of Windsor, N.C., and Ranford Conaway and wife Deborah of Delmar, Md.; two daughters, June Green and husband Demetrius of Cambridge and Laurie Toms and husband Scott of Hurlock; a niece he raised as a daughter, Amelia Frazier and husband James of Rehoboth, Del.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Lewis and husband James of Lewes Del., Ruth Ann White of Rehoboth, Del., and Sandra Nomil of Dover, Del., four brothers, Robert White of York, Pa., Otis White and wife Charolette of Millsboro, Del., Samuel White of Wilmington, Del., and Herman Cephas of Delmar, Md.; a special aunt, Catherine Cephas of Hurlock; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held noon Wednesday at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in East New Market.

A viewing will be held noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

L. Robert Meritt

HURLOCK - L. Robert Meritt, 57, passed away late Monday afternoon, June 3, 2002 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. Mr. Merritt had been in failing health for the past years.

He was born Jan. 20, 1945 at Linchester, the son of Clara E. Meritt Marine of Hurlock and the late Eldred William Meritt Sr. He was raised in the Preston area and attended public schools in Caroline County. When growing up he was active in the Boy Scouts and he later enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Meritt was a welder and had been employed by Maryland Wire Belts in Church Creek.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Joyce Elaine Ratcliffe, to whom he was married on Aug. 28, 1964; one daughter, Bobbi Jo Shorter of Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Richard V. Meritt of Cambridge; two grandchildren, Sabre' and Logan Shorter; four sisters, Linda Thomas and Laura Baker, both of Preston, Jo Ellen Algier of Denton and Lisa Marine of Paducah, Ky.; one brother, E. William Meritt Jr. of Salisbury; two aunts, Faye Burton of Calvert City, Ky. and Barbara Howell of Hudson, N.C., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, L. Robert Meritt Jr.

A funeral service was held June 6 at the Thomas Funeral Home with his brother-in-law, Bill Thomas Sr. officiating. Burial followed in East New Market Cemetery. Friends were received at the funeral home during the hour preceding the service.

Pallbearers were Bill Thomas Jr., John North, Jeff Cronshaw, William Vogel Jr., Calvert Stewart and Don Ratcliffe.

Carrie G. Rosetta

CAMBRIDGE - Carrie G. Rosetta, 75, passed away at the emergency room of Dorchester General Hospital around noon on Saturday, June 8, 2002.

Born in Cambridge Oct. 8, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Lyons Marshall. She was raised and attended public schools in Trappe, but for most of her life lived in Cambridge.

In the late 1950s she began working at Dorchester General Hospital, and though she worked in several areas of the hospital, she mainly worked in central supply. She retired in 1990.

As a young woman, she married Richard H. "Peanut" Rosetta, who passed away Feb. 21, 2002.

She is survived by one son, Richard L. Rosetta of Linkwood; one stepdaughter, Christine Baugh of Baltimore; one granddaughter, Brenna Rosetta; four stepgrandchildren, Lisa Wise, Nicole Baugh, Ronnie Wise and Joey Wise; two nieces, Beverly Jones and Brenda Bloodsworth; and two nephews, Perry and Bob Ewell.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Ewell, and one brother, Marvin Marshall.

A funeral service will be held at the Thomas Funeral Home 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Lloyd G. Massey will officiate. Burial will take place at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kirk Bloodsworth, Bob Ewell, Mike Ewell, Perry Ewell, Jay Jones and Robbie Walker.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Christian Church, 1619 Race St., Cambridge, MD 21613.

John L. Sewell

TAYLORS ISLAND - John L. Sewell, 76, passed away Friday morning, June 7, 2002.

Born in Baltimore Aug. 18, 1925, he was the son of the late George Coulter and Margaret Stern Sewell. He was raised and educated in Baltimore.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army from November 1944 to April 1947. He served in Central Europe.

For most of his life, he lived in Baltimore and worked as a mechanic for Pantry Pride, retiring 15 years ago. For the past 20 years, he has made his home at Taylors Island.

He was a member of Cambridge Lodge 66 AF&AM and Highland Lodge 184 in Baltimore, the Scotish Rite and York Rite Bodies, Boumi Temple, AAONMS and Baltimore Forest 45, Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He also held membership in Post 180 American Legion in Rosedale and VFW posts 7460 in Cambridge and 1529 in Baltimore, Assosication of Retired Members of Teamsters Local 335 and the Grand Lodge of Maryland One Gallon Club.

His wife, the former Elizabeth Esposito, passed away in February 1999.

He is survived by one son, Craig L. Sewell of O'Fallon, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Anysa Reider, Kim LaJoye, Danny Sewell, Bret Whittey, Brittany Jones, Kelly Jones and Kyle Jones; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Richardson, Collis Richardson and Ryan LaJoye; two sisters, Margaret Sebeck of York, Pa., and Anna Biscoe of Perry Hall; one brother, William Sewell of Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Jones, and a sister, Frances Gross.

Friends will be received at the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery noon to 1 p.m. Monday. At 1 p.m., officers and members of Cambridge Lodge 66 will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service, followed by a funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bob Kirkley.

Pallbearers will be Danny Sewell, Barry Wingate, Dave Tyler, Bill Gootee, Jerry Finch and Leo Troup.

Conaway Addendum

CAMBRIDGE - Funeral services will be held noon today at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge for Melvin Rovenson Conaway "Mr. Big Stuff" who died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Memorial Hospital in Easton. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion UM Church Cemetery in East New Market.

Mr. Conaway was survived by five sons, two daughters, a niece, 11 grandchilden, seven great-grandchilden, three sisters and four brothers.

Mr.Conaway was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret White and a brother, Charles White.

The family received friends Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
