Lawrence B. Small

PORTSMOUTH - Lawrence B. Small, 80, of 346 Pleasant St., formerly of 21 Taft Road, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born June 16, 1918, in Northwood, he was the son of John and Florence (Arlin) Small. He was a graduate of Coe Brown Academy.

During World War II, he served in the Navy.

Before his retirement, he was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in a supervisory position in the Chipper and Caulker Shop.

He was a member of the Merrimack Lodge of Masons F & AM.

He was the husband of Vernessia (Hadley) Small for 60 years.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn Small Jarvis of Rye; four grandchildren, Victoria Loring, Kendall Brown, Christopher Brown and Justin Jarvis; three great-grandchildren; two brothers; eight sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

John P. Lassen

HAMPTON - John P. Lassen, 65, of 200 Landing Road, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.

Born June 30, 1933, in Boston, he was the son of the late Jens P. and Gladys M. (Rhodes) Lassen. Raised in Needham, Mass., he lived in San Francisco for 20 years before retiring to Hampton in 1993. He graduated from Needham High School in 1951 and from the University of New Hampshire in 1955.

A captain with the Air Force, he was a pilot serving during the 1950s.

He worked in San Francisco as a systems consultant for Monroe Systems for Business Inc.

An active member of the UNH Alumni Association, he had been a member of the UNH lacrosse team, which won the 1955 National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Championship. He was a past president of the Seabury Condominium Owners Association.

Survivors include a sister, Ann L. Knight and her husband, Fritz, of Oak Bluffs, Mass.; and six nieces and nephews, Lisa Knight, Pamela Knight, Peter Knight, Kristen Knight, Laura Knight and Jennifer Knight, all of Oak Bluffs.

He was predeceased by a nephew, David Knight, in 1981.

Paul V. Kehoe

PORTSMOUTH _ Paul V. Kehoe, 69, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in New Brunswick, N.J., where he resided for most of his life. He had lived in Portsmouth for seven years, moving from Boston where he had resided for five years. A graduate of St. Peter High School, New Brunswick, he also graduated from St. Peter's College, Jersey City, N.J.

He was a chemist for Standard Oil of New Jersey, and had been owner of Paul Kehoe Associates of Boston, an executive recruitment agency.

He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception RC Church, Portsmouth, where he was a CCD coordinator.

Survivors include a brother, John Kehoe of East Brunswick; four sisters, Mary Mooar of Amherst, N.Y., Kathleen Turner of East Brunswick, Alice Martins of Ludlow, Mass., and Patricia Long of Hummelstown, Pa.

He was predeceased by a sister, Eileen Rogers, in 1971, and two brothers, James Kehoe in 1998 and Francis Kehoe in 1990.

Mary L. Moore

ROCHESTER - Mary Louise Moore, 87, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Sunrise Rehabilitation and Care in Rochester after a long period of failing health.

Born Oct. 30, 1911, in Wolfeboro, she was the daughter of Theodore and Rose (Valley) Berry. She resided in Rochester for most of her life.

For many years, she worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, L.J. Moore & Sons Inc.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, a volunteer at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee, and a member of the Senior Citizens of Rochester and Wolfeboro.

She was the wife of the late Leonel J. Moore, who died in 1974.

Survivors include two sons, Leon J. Moore of Rochester, and Willis J. Moore of Greenland; three daughters, Mary Conroy of Rochester, Irene Shorter of Goffstown, and Jean Younes of New York City, N.Y.; one sister, Wilfreda Morgan of Wolfeboro; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Paul J. Beane

NEWINGTON - Paul J. Beane, 85, of 233 Nimble Hill Road, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born April 1, 1914, in Newington, he was the son of the late Louis C. and Abbie A. (Rollins) Beane. He attended Portsmouth High School.

He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 26 years as a carpenter and shipwright until his retirement in 1974.

A former Newington selectmen and budget committee member, he was a charter member of the Newington Fire Department and had served on various town committees.

He was a communicant of the Newington Congregational Church.

He was a member of the UBC Local No. 3073 and National Skeet Shooting Association.

He was the husband of the late Doris Maryann (Ouellette) Bean.

Survivors include five children, Nancy Cansler of Hillsville, Pa., Paul (Rollie) Beane of Newington, Kathy Beane of Miami, Fla., Norman Beane of Bethel, Maine, and Susan Newcomer of Newington; six grandchildren, Gina Cansler, Karen Cansler, Jimmy Cansler, Hannah Barrett, Ian Fritz, and Abbie Beane; a sister, Jessie A. Beane of Portsmouth; a special friend, Mary House of Newington; and the caring staff at the Edgewood Centre.

Ann B. Lawlor

DURHAM - Ann Brun Lawlor, of 6 Church Hill Road, died at her daughter's home in Durham in the company of her family following a brief period of illness.

The youngest child of Benjamin Joseph and Catherine Daneri Brun, she was born in San Francisco, a city beloved to her.

As a child and young woman, she enjoyed swimming, skiing and especially tennis, an activity that she was able to participate in through most of her adult years. While attending the University of California, she joined the Gamma Chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority and formed friendships that lasted throughout her life.

Always an encouraging influence in her children's education, she served as a substitute teacher at the elementary and middle school levels in Rollinsford, Dover, Somersworth and Rochester. She was a member and an officer of the school board of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Long after her children graduated from the school, she continued her relationships with members of the teaching faculty.

At Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, she served as president of the Women's Auxiliary, was a volunteer chairwoman of several committees, and assisted in the Candystriper program.

As social chairwoman of the Cocheco Country Club, she helped organize banquets, dances and other activities.

She enjoyed the challenge of being Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.

Her lifelong interest in theater was passed on to her children and grandchildren. As a member of the Cocheco Players and the Garrison Players, she played the lead role in several productions, most notably as Regina in "The Little Foxes." She also appeared in a production of "Come Blow Your Horn" at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

When her children Benjamin and Catherine became owners of the Old Village Inn in Ogunquit, she assumed the responsibilities of bookkeeping, vendor payments and salaries. Her association with the inn continued for 15 years.

She was formerly married to John Edward Lawlor of Dover.

Survivors include three sons, John Charles Lawlor and his wife, Marian, of Essex Junction, Vt., Benjamin Joseph Lawlor of Dover, and David McIntyre Lawlor and his wife, Brenda, of Gardiner, Maine; a daughter, Catherine Lawlor Nadeau and her husband, Joseph, of Durham; six grandchildren, Patrick and David Lawlor of Essex Junction, Vt., Tina, Diana and Briana Nadeau of Durham, and Sean Lawlor of Gardiner, Maine; many relatives in the extended Lawlor and Brun families, including brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Kim A. Finneran

DOVER - Kim A. Finneran, 25, of Dover, formerly of Stratham, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at the Children's Hospital in Boston after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis.

Born Feb. 26, 1974, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Michael J. and Elizabeth A. (Fitzgerald) Finneran of Stratham. In 1992, she graduated from Exeter Area High School. She attended Plymouth State College for four years. She had resided in Stratham for most her life.

In addition to her parents, survivors include one brother, Shawn M. Finneran of Nottingham; maternal grandparents Florence and George Fitzgerald of Lynn, Mass.; one niece; aunts, uncles and cousins.

David S. Freitas Jr.

NORTH HAMPTON - David S. Freitas Jr., 37, of North Hampton and formerly of Manchester, died Friday, May 28, 1999, at Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

Born May 22, 1962, in Manchester, he was the son of David S. and Catherine M. (Drakos) Freitas of Hampton.

He graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1980 and from Mount Ida College in 1996.

He was a communicant of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

For 14 years, he was the owner and operator of Andrew's by the Ocean in North Hampton.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Alice Freitas of Exeter; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Shawn Barton

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - Shawn Jeremy Barton, 27, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, after a long period of illness.

Born March 5, 1972, he was a lifelong resident of the Seacoast area, graduating from Portsmouth High School in 1990.

He graduated from technical school as a certified welder as his trade.

He was a member of the York Village Fire Department for a brief period.

He was an avid fly fisherman and adept at tying flies.

Survivors include his wife, Meghan Barton, and a daughter, Kate E. Davis, both of Virginia; his mother, Patty S. Bridges of Midwest City, Okla.; two brothers, Ryan F. Barton and Stephen P. Barton, of Midwest City; a sister, Megan C. Barton, of Midwest City; his father, Rex L. Barton of Epping; grandmothers Oletha J. Barton of Portsmouth, and Caroline F. Smith of Exeter; three aunts, Anita M. Barton-Goulet of Portsmouth, Laurie A. Bryant of York and Mary G. Smith of Somersworth; four uncles, Robert D. Barton of Stratham, Joel E. Barton of Sterling, Va., James P. Smith of Newburyport, Mass., and Jeffrey B. Smith of Somersworth.

Alice C. Sweeley

ROCKPORT, Mass. - Alice C. Sweeley, 91, formerly of 43 Mount Pleasant St., died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Buckley Nursing Home in Greenfield.

Born on February 29, 1908, in Eliot, she was the daughter of the late Fred H. and Amy O. (Goodwin) Wilson.

In 1926, she graduated from Eliot High School. In 1929 she graduated from the Somerville Hospital School of Nursing.

While residing in Somerville, she was a nursing supervisor at the Somerville Hospital from 1930 to 1941. In 1967, she relocated to Rockport. In 1990, she relocated to the Greenfield area where she lived for the rest of her life.

She enjoyed traveling and gardening, and was active in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Gloucester, Mass.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Crawford K. Sweeley, in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Crawford K. Sweeley of Greenfield.

A private burial will be held on Wednesday, June 2. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery, Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, 142 Prospect St., Gloucester, Mass. 01930.

Thelma J. Fields

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Thelma J. Fields, of Portsmouth, were held Wednesday, May 19, 1999. Graveside services were conducted by the Rev. Edward Parker of the Seacoast Community Church. Honorary pallbearers were Karyl Horn, Patti Peters, Patty Bancewicz, Patty Belleville and June Daly.

American Legion Post No. 6 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 168 conducted services Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Farrell Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with the following members in attendance:

From the VFW Auxiliary No. 168: Cathie Chevalier, president; Anna Labrie, treasurer; Celeste Nicholas, District 7 president; Inglish Nicholas, conductress; Pam Helton, senior vice president; Dora Anthony, guard; Arlene Lundin, trustee; and Brenda Walton.

Alice K. Hurley

PORTSMOUTH -- Alice K. Hurley, 86, of 302 McKinley Road, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born June 24, 1912, in Kittery, she was the daughter of William and Mamie (Middlebrook) Hurley. She attended Kittery schools; graduated from Chelsea Memorial Hospital Nurses training program in Chelsea, Mass., in 1935; and received further training at Simmons College in Boston and New York Orthopedic Hospital.

A lieutenant colonel, she entered the Army in 1942, serving as a medical surgical nurse. She was stationed in the Pacific theater during World War II and in Korea during the Korean War. As a medical surgical nurse supervisor, she retired from the service in 1965 after 23 years of service.

She worked at Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and gardening.

Survivors indude a sister, Mamie Varney of Kittery; and two nephews, Basil R. Varney and his wife, Mary, of Portsmouth, and Douglas Hurley of Lexington, Ky.
