Folks around Elkton know Kerry J. Southworth as a veteran ice fisherman, but he was no match for the Saginaw Bay on Saturday.
Southworth, 42, a farmer and father of three children, apparently drowned when he drove his all-terrain vehicle into a large hole in the ice about three-quarters of a mile from shore.
"The ice is in very poor condition because of a lot of open water, so we're asking fishermen to be very cautious because of the conditions," said Huron County Sheriff Michael L. Gage.
"We're not going to keep ice fishermen off the ice, but we're telling them to be very cautious," Gage said.
Officials at the U.S. Coast Guard's Saginaw River station in Bay County's Hampton Township are warning ice fishermen about the large hole that enveloped Southworth's vehicle.
The hole in the bay's ice, about one-half mile west of the mouth of Mud Creek, isn't easily seen, Coast Guard officials said.
Divers with the Huron County Sheriff's Department found Southworth's body in about 6 feet of water at 11:59 a.m. Sunday. Authorities received a call at 4:30 a.m. Sunday alerting them that Southworth hadn't returned from a fishing trip.
Southworth had left shore at a public access site at the end of Filion Road in McKinley Township.
Southworth "enjoyed his (ice) fishing, and he used to go out quite often," said John Champagne, owner of the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton, which is making funeral arrangements for Southworth.
Officers from the sheriff's department were assisted by Coast Guard and Michigan Department of Natural Resources personnel at the scene on Sunday. Two Caseville-area men - Jeremy Steinman and Brian Henry - used their airboats to haul divers and equipment to the hole in the ice, Gage said.
Authorities found and returned Southworth's all-terrain vehicle, along with a sled he pulled behind the vehicle.
A funeral service for Southworth is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight and from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton.
Kerry Southworth is survived by his wife, Kathy, along with the couple's three children. Kerry Southworth's mother, Betty Southworth of Elkton; his grandmother, Florence Southworth of Elkton; and a number of brothers and sisters also survive him.
