Gary Edwin Vance
MARQUETTE -- Gary Edwin Vance, 51, of Ishpeming, died Tuesday morning, May 22, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital following a heart attack.
Mr. Vance was born on November 20, 1949 in Huntington, WV, a son of the late James and Rachel (Harrison) Vance. He had been a resident of Marquette County for over 17 years and worked as a laborer, sometimes performing landscaping and snow removal duties. Mr. Vance was also a veteran of the army having served in the Vietnam War.
Gary is survived by a daughter, Melissa Vance of Huntington, WV; two sons, Leon Vance of Arizona
Jennie was a member of Finnish Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Negaunee.
Surviving are her loving husband, Viljo L. Hakala, 2 sons; Charles Richard (Shirley) Lemberg, Jacob R. (Connie) Lemberg, both of Vancouver, WA, 3 daughters; Helen (Jack) Hendrickson and Elizabeth (Douglas) Hunsucker, both of Vancouver, WA, LaVonne Kinder, Maysville, KY, 33 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 2 step daughters: Debbie (John) Cox, New Hope, Michigan. Wilhart R. Etelamaki
PALMER -- Wilhart R. Etelamaki, 79, of 508 Isabella St., Palmer, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at F.A. Bell Memorial shortly after being admitted.
Born Sept. 21, 1921 in Negaunee, the son of William and Helmie (Kuijanpaa) Etelamaki. He was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1940. Mr. Etelamaki was a member of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division serving in the European Theater during WWII. Returning from overseas he worked as an underground miner at the Athens and Bunker Hill Mines and retired from the Empire Mine as an electrician. Mr. Etelamaki was an avid HAM radio operator.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Olson, whom he married at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic, 4 sons, Glen (Ruth) Etelamaki of Holt, OH -- Fern Lindstrom Nesberg, 93, formerly of 1855 Ontario St., Marquette, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in Seville, Michigan Retired Teachers. In her free time she enjoyed gardening, quilting and crafts.
Fern is survived by a daughter Alice (Meinhard) Loppnow of DePere, WI; two sons, Gregory (Joanne) Lindstrom of Negaunee and David (Linda) Lindstrom of Seville, Iowa to the late Howard and Elsie (Dayton) Stewart. Howard served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Opal Manville in 1946. Howard graduated from Northern Iowa. Besides his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his former wife, Opal and special friend, Mary Apitz.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. The funeral will be conducted at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel on Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 3:00 pm. Interment will be at the Old Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Midland, Michigan, Roy Etelamaki of Lansing, Gordon (Susan) Etelamaki, Maysville, Kansas, Rodney Etelamaki of Harvey, 5 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Fanny Lautinen, Palmer, Mrs. Kenneth (Verna) Burkman, Marquette, 1 brother Tauno (Mae) Etelamaki, Negaunee and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 1:00 PM at The Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. George Kaiser to officiate. Visitation will be Saturday at 11:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.

William A. Mayotte
ISHPEMING -- William A. Mayotte, age 74, of 148 Excelsior St. Ishpeming passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital after a sudden illness.
William was born March 23, 1927 in Hancock, MI to the late Lawrence Ted and Helen (Baird) Mayotte. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korea Conflict.
Bill worked as a splicing technician for Florida.
Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years Shirley Mayotte of Ishpeming; 5 children: William J. Mayotte of Ishpeming, Rose Marie (Ronald) Anderson of Chassell, Lawrence Mayotte of St. Petersburg, FL, Yvonne (Wayne) Nurmi of Ishpeming and Gary Guibord of Ishpeming; a sister Genevieve Martin of Edgewater, FL; 7 grandchildren: Angela Mayotte, John and Lisa Anderson, Linda Jean (Glen) Hartwell, Susan Nurmi, Michael (Britton) Nurmi and Aubree Bianco-Guibord; 5 great grandchildren; several neices and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, May 27, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:00 pm until the time of services.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials can be made in Bill's memory to a charity of one's choice.
Larry R. Saari
MANISTIQUE -- Larry R. Saari, age 36, of 211 North Maple, Manistique died May 25, 2001 at his home.
He was born June 19, 1964 in Hancock, Michigan Skills Center. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1984 until 1988 and moved to Manistique in 1990, where he was employed as a master mechanic at Bill's Automotive.
On May 28, 1994 he married Annette D. Cota in Manistique.
Larry was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, and collecting Hot Wheels miniature vehicles.
He is survived by his wife, Annette of Manistique; parents Robert and Barbara Saari of Marquette; four brothers, Kevin Saari and Mike Saari of Waupun, WI, Daren (Kim) Saari of Long Beach, Florida working as a bookkeeper for the Immokalee Growers Co-op for many years until her
retirement in 1990. She moved to this area in 1990 to be with her family.
Ruth is survived by her daughter Barbara (William) Snell of Champion; 2 brothers- William (Jean) Morse of St. Michaels, MD and Robert (Emily) Morse of Annapolis, MD; 3 grandsons- Kenneth Snell of Champion, Douglas Snell of Ishpeming, and Matthew (Valeri) Snell of Ishpeming; 4 great grandchildren- Kurtis, Megan, Jordan, and Cameron Snell along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband A. Hartley Stevens III and 2 sisters- Mary Bashor and Nancy Hansen.
Honoring Ruth's request, there will be no visitation or services.

Charles Paananen
MUNISING -- Charles H. Paananen, age 77, of 200 W. City Park Drive Apt. #108, Munising, died on Friday, May 25, 2001 at 3:00 a.m. at the Superior Health Haven in Munising. Charlie was born on April 1, 1924 in Chatham, Michigan to the late Nikolai and Anna (Nyman) Paananen. He attended school in Chatham and worked on his family farm while growing up. Charlie entered into the U.S. Army on December 8, 1942. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater during WWII. Charlie was involved with battles and campaigns at Naples, Foggia, Rome Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He earned the WWII Victory Medal, the EAME Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star, 5 Overseas Service Bars, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged on December 3, 1945. Charlie married Jean Marie LaFave on September 7, 1946. They purchased his parents farm and they farmed for eight years. Charlie worked at the Munising Woodenware before beginning employment with Kimberly Clark on June 22, 1955 as a beater helper in the paper department. He worked various jobs in the paper department and wood room until 1958 when he posted into the specialties department as a utility helper. Charlie progressed to compound-sizemaker and retired on July 28, 1977. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, the Ikkala Bros. V.F.W., and a former member of the Moose. Charlie enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was very proud of his grilling skills and would picnic often with his children. He loved to hunt and fish. Charlie was always tinkering with his fishing "stuff" and making lures to take out on the lake.
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-four years, Jean Paananen of Munising; their children- Diane VanPelt of Marquette, Regina (Dennis) Adair of Munising, Kathy (Thomas) Glatus of Escanaba, Charla Fowler of Wayne, MI, and Richard (Marnie) Paananen of Munising; 12 grandchildren- Theresa, Kimberly, Roger, Tracy, Alan, Melissa, Brian, Alexander, Wesley, Richard, Troy, and Joseph; great-grandchildren- Jacob, Jaina, Samantha, and Taylor; sisters- Aune (Albin) Kida of Detroit and Linda Malczynski of Sterling Heights; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besided his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Waltemar Paananen.
Friends may call on Monday evening at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00. A parish vigil service will be conducted by Fr. Dennis L. Borca on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at 10:00 am at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct graveside services. Charlie will be escorted by Denny and Roger Adair, Tom and Alan Glatus, Bill Tussing, and Carl Tackman.
George W. Olivier
CASA GRANDE, AZ - George W. Olivier of Casa Grande, AZ died Friday, May 25, 2001 after a brief illness. He was born April 20, 1923 in Marquette to George and Gertrude Olivier. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1941. He served 3 years in the Marines during WWII and recieved the Purple Heart commendation at the battle of Iwo Jima. George worked for the DSS&A and Soo Line Railroad, retiring in 1983.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy; 4 sons, Edward, Steve (Peggy) of Elk River, MN, Patrick of Minneapolis, and Paul of Las Vegas; 3 grandchildren, Stephanie, Brandon and Jeremey; 2 sisters, Frances (Pat) Trainor and Mary C. Puetzer; 3 brothers, Rev. John H., Paul (Olive) and Steven (Patricia).
He was predeceased by his parents, a daughter, Mary Catherine and a sister, Ann Holliday.
A memorial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church in Casa Grande, Wednesday, May 30, 2001.
Burial will take place at a later date in Mackinaw City, MI.
Glen D. Pawley
MANISTIQUE -- Lifetime Manistique resident Glen D. Pawley, age 88, of 900 Steuben Street #208, Manistique died May 25, 2001 at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.
He was born December 30, 1912 in Manistique the son of Isaac and Bessy (Leonard) Pawley and graduated from the Manistique High School in the Class of 1934.
On June 22, 1934 he married Florence Ekstrom in Manistique.
Glen was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, Lakeside Lodge #371 Free and Accepted Masons of Manistique, Ahmed Temple of Marquette. He was a life member of the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420 and the Manistique Elks Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the owner of the Pawley Oil Company in Manistique.
He is survived by his wife, Florence of Manistique; one son, Richard (Cynthia) Pawley of Ishpeming; two daughters, Gloria (Jon) Haindl of Cooks and Joan (Mike) Gierke of Escanaba; one brother, Leland Pawley of Gulliver; six grandchildren: Robin Pawley-Ingalls, Casey Pawley, Elizabeth Pawley, Davis Pawley, Jason Haindl and Lori Haindl; and several neices and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Isaac Pawley and Kenneth Pawley.
Visitation will be at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manistique from 7:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday, May 27, 2001. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 pm with Reverend David Hueter officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique.
Memorials may be directed to the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility, 520 Main St., Manistique, MI 49854.
