Dr. Michael L. Kelly

GLADSTONE - Dr. Michael L. Kelly of the Days River area, Gladstone, died Tuesday February 12, 2002, at home. Mike was born January 4, 1942 in Escanaba, the son of Dr. George Kelly and the former Virginia VanEst and was raised in Gladstone. He was a graduate of the Gladstone High , class of 1960 and continued his education at Albian College for 4 years before entering the University of South Carolina, 2 brothers, G. Peter (Barbara) Kelly of Marquette, Robert V. (Virginia) Kelly of Negaunee, 1 grandson, Benjamin Kelly, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Delia Oja of Days River area, Gladstone, nieces and nephews, John and James Kelly, Tania Lajimodiere, Kristie Kelly, and Jana Lavelle, and his dogs "Baxter", "Gordon" and "Max". The family of Dr. Michael L. Kelly will receive friends on Friday at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at All Saints Church in Gladstone with Rev. Fr. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Fernwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Kelly family for a memorial trust to be established in Mike's name at a future date. Envelopes will be available at the Skradski Funeral Home and Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home of Delta County who are assisting the family.

Mary E. Anderson

BARAGA -- Mary E. Anderson, 80, of Baraga, passed away at her residence Tuesday, February 12, 2002 following a lengthy illness. She was born in Houghton, MI on April 2, 1921 daughter of the late John and Mary Anderson. Mary attended the Houghton Schools and was a lifetime area resident. She was employed as an area cosmetician until her retirement. Mary was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. Miss Anderson is survived by a sister, Agnes (Theodore) Hokenson of Marquette, and her special friend Bonnie Dietsche of Baraga. Nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, 2 brothers and 1 sister preceded her in death.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Thursday February 14, 2002 from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. Rev. George Joseph will be the celebrant. Interment will take place in the spring. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, assisted the family with arrangements.

Bruno A. Vilona
ISHPEMING -- Bruno A. Vilona, age 80, of 369 W. Division St., Ishpeming, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.

Bruno was born May 11, 1921 in Simbario, Italy to the late James P. & Assunta (Tassone) Vilona. Bruno came to the United States at age 8. He resided in Chicago, IL for 1 year before moving to th U.P. in 1929. He attended St. John's Catholic School in Ishpeming. He later enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corp. He was employed at camp Pore as a lead man planting trees and fire look out in Mass City, MI. He later worked at the Greenwood Mine for 2 years. He was a veteran of the Pacific Theatre, communications chief Hq. CO. 136 Infantry 33rd Division. He attained the rank of Staff Sgt. He later transferred to the 3177 signal battalion for special duty on Pacific Island from 1942 to 1945. After discharge he returned to Ishpeming to run the 20th Century Restaurant on Canda Street and the Tourist Club in Three Lakes, MI with his father James.

He married Helen E, Hinstala on August 27, 1949. He was employed with the C.C.I. Co. at the Cliffs Shaft, Mather B. Ore Improvement Plant until he retired in 1979 from the Empire Mine warehouse.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church & Ishpeming VFW 4573. He loved spending time at camp, hunting, fishing, picking mushrooms, vegetable and flower gardening.

He is survived by his wife Helen, 3 sons, James (Debora) Vilona of Ishpeming, Danny (Cathy) Vilona of Ishpeming, David (Theresa) Vilona of Pleasant Prairie, WI, 5 granddaughters, Tracy, Amy, Kristy, Monica & Tina, along with 1 great granddaughter, Brianna. He was preceded in death by his father, James in 1967, his mother, Assunta in 1984 and a brother, Dominic in 1982.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday, February 16, 2002 at 2:00 PM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A luncheon will be held at St. Joseph's Hall following the funeral mass. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 5 until 8 PM Friday. A parish wake service will be held at 6:30 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Dora D. Borlace

NEGAUNEE -- Dora D. Borlace, age 85, of 405 County Road, Negaunee, died at 8:25pm on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had been a patient for 5 months.

Dora was born August 25, 1916 in Negaunee to Ernest and Blanche (Adams) Moyle, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1934 and was a life long resident. She worked for many years as a nurse's aide at the Acocks Medical Facility, retiring in 1977. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was an avid Bingo player.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Margaret Borlace of Ishpeming; three grandsons, Robert (Pamela) Borlace of Traverse City, Gary (Sarah) Borlace of Midland and David Borlace of Ishpeming; several nieces and nephews. Her husband Arthur J. Borlace died on October 19, 1991.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. Paul G. Donelson, pastor of Wesley Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dora's grandsons.

Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 11:00am until the time of services at 1:00pm on Saturday.

Toni Kay Wyngaard (Salmi)
FOREST JUNCTION -- Toni Kay Wyngaard (Salmi), of Forest Junction, age 42, passed away on February 14, 2002 at Theda Clark Hospital. She was born on June 13, 1959, the daughter of Carl and Diana Mae (Yoki) Salmi. On March 26, 1988 she was united in marriage to Warren Wyngaard. Toni had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors. She will be truly missed by all whose lives she has touched.

She is survived by her loving husband; father; two brothers: Rob Salmi and Dann (Carrie) Salmi and their children: Justin & Tyler; four sisters: Sharon (Daryl) DeLongchamp and their children: Tammy and Kari, Vicki (John) ("Gubba") Ostlund and their children: Amber, Crystal, Carly; Charlene (Rich) Haggerman and their children; Ryan and Lucas; Shelby (Paul) Hella and their son: Tony; Mother & Father-in-law; Louis and Germaine (Gerry) Wyngaard; sisters-in-law: Cindy and Patty Wyngaard. Donna (Jim) Wentzel and their children: Sam and Aaron: Dave (Sandy) and their children: Matt and Stephanie; Wayne (Shawn) and their children: Jennifer and Becky; many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother: Diana Mae Matz and a sister; Anita Salmi. A private family service will be held. Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond, Appleton, WI 54911, is assisting the family.

Santo Lombardo
NEGAUNEE -- Santo Lombardo, age 54, of 213 E. Clark Street, Negaunee, died at 1:50am on Thursday, February 14, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had been a patient for 1 day and following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Lombardo was born October 24,1947 in Michigan, died February 10, 2002 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born February 20, 1980 in Ishpeming, a son of Thomas Sellman and Tammy Rogers. He attended Constantine Schools. On October 27, 2000, he married Amber Lynn Girard in Centreville. Sean had been employed at Elkhart Plastics, and previously at Grumman Olsen in Sturgis. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and Playstation.

Sean is survived by his wife, Amber and a son, Kurt Allen Rogers, both of Constantine; mother, Tammy Rogers of White Pigeon; grandparents, Larry and Sandy LaMere of Sturgis and Leonard and Pat Rogers of Gwinn; mother-in-law, Kathy (Wayne) Tolliver of White Pigeon; father-in-law, Rusty (Lynette) Girard of Columbus, MS; brother, Roger Taylor, Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Crystal Weirich and Heather Girard, all of White Pigeon; Aunt Kelly (Tom) Hodge and Uncle Shawn LaMere, both of Constantine; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Sellman and an uncle, Kurt LaMere.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine, MI. Burial was in the Constantine Cemetery.

Raymond Morro
TAMPA, FL -- Raymond Morro (Bii dah ni maad) age 46, of Tampa, FL passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at his home. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 22, at 11:00 a.m. at the Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-8:00 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to the service, both at Most Holy Name of Jesus Church. Fr. George Joseph will officiate. Burial will be in the Assinins Cemetery in the spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.

John David LaForest
NEGAUNEE - John David LaForest, 40, of 104 Sterling Street, died at home on Saturday, February 16, 2002.

He was born in Marquette on August 29, 1961 to the late Gerald and Lois (Kangas) LaForest. John was a graduate of Negaunee High School and NMU vocational school (auto mechanics). He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and also playing pool.

John is survived by his brothers, Gerald (Donna) LaForest II, James (Liz) LaForest, and William (Ann) LaForest all of Negaunee, two nephews, Jesse (Angie) and Jason, one niece Michelle (Brody), great niece Emily, and his good friends Randy Lempinen, Dale White, and Tim Romback.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Lois "Dolly" LaForest.

The family will have a private memorial service. The Perala Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Leo M. Mattson

WEST ALLIS, WI -- Leo M. Mattson, age 86, found peace Tuesday, February 12, 2002. Beloved husband of Martha (nee Kangas). Dear father of Jim, Brian (Paula), Bonnie (Dave) Polzin and Gary Mattson. Loving grandfather of Lisa (Jeff Krivitz), Danielle (Sal), Jamie, Shelly and Nicole. Brother of Edna Smith. Half brother of John Oinas and Ruth Nurkala. Also loved by other relatives and friends.

Visitation at the Funeral Home, February 15, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m. and at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 2840 S. 84th St., on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Burial at Highland.

Leo will be remembered for his love of music, life and his family. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 10519 and a veteran of WWII.

Lois "Dolly" Elina LaForest

NEGAUNEE - Lois "Dolly" Elina LaForest, 65, of 104 Sterling Street, died of natural causes at her home on Saturday, February 16, 2002, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Ishpeming on Friday, March 13, 1936 to the late Linda and John Kangas. Dolly was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Dolly is survived by her sons, Gerald (Donna) LaForest II, James (Liz) LaForest, and William (Ann) LaForest, all of Negaunee, a granddaughter, Michelle (Brody), grandsons, Jesse (Angie) and Jason, great-granddaughter Emily, step-granddaughter Annie Kecker, step grandson Glenn Kecker, her sisters Susie (John) Bartle, Phyllis (William) Bleau, and Sharon (William) Parkkonen, and her loyal friend Nancy Finnala.

Deceased family members include her husband, Gerald, son John, brother John Kangas, and sisters MaryAnn Swenor, Shirley Rivord, and Beverly Proskin.

The family will have a private memorial service. The Perala Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Charles G. "Skip" Lindberg
MARQUETTE ­ Charles G. "Skip" Lindberg, 73, formerly of 222 S. Fifth Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday morning, February 19, 2002, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee, in the care and comfort of his family and the caregivers of Eastwood and Lake Superior Hospice. He had resided at Eastwood for the past three years. Skip was born December 24,1928 in Marquette, a son of the late Milton R. and Ann V. (Longtine) Lindberg, Sr and was a lifelong Marquette area resident. Skip served in the US Army for two years and then, on October 15, 1949, married Shirley J. Trepanier in Marquette. The couple then set about establishing their home and raising a family which would eventually include five children. Skip was employed in the painting and wallpapering business for several years, working first with the former Smith and Smith Wallpaper and Paint Company. In the mid 1960's he established his own decorating business, Charles Lindberg Painting and Decorating, which he owned and operated until 1975 when he closed that operation. He then went to work for ShopKo in a custodial-maintenance capacity until a stroke in 1980 brought about his retirement. Following the stroke, his loving wife, Shirley, became his primary caregiver for the next twenty-two years. Skip was very devoted to his family and enjoyed time spent with them, especially when going out to eat. He also liked going to camp and, prior to his illness, shot pool for the Pub for several years. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral and a former member of the Marquette Moose Lodge. Skip is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley J. Lindberg, a resident of the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee; two daughters, Yvonne (Bill) Zintman and Mary (Jerry) Henthorne both of Marquette; three sons, Wayne (Patty) Lindberg of Marquette, Larry Lindberg of Negaunee; and Tim (Diane) Lindberg of Marquette; his grandchildren, Briana, Tom, Scott, Kate, Allyssa, and Drew Lindberg, Melissa (Greg) Doucette, and Dan Campbell; three step- grandchildren, Christopher, Erin, and Melissa Henthorne; great-grandchildren, Jessica Campbell, Kelsey and Corey Doucette, and Sierra Henthorne; a sister, Jean Iris LaVigne of Marquette; sister-in-law, Ruth Lindberg of Marquette; brother-in-law, Wayne Trepanier of Marquette; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Skip was preceded in death by a brother, Milton R. Lindberg, Jr; and a sister-in-law, Joan"JoJo" Trepanier. Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday afternoon, February 22, at 1:00 pm in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo and Rev. Guy Thoren, con-celebrating. A reception for family and friends will follow in Cathedral Hall. Escorts will be Skip's grandchildren, Melissa Doucette, Dan Campbell, Tom, Briana, and Scott Lindberg. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. The family would like to express their appreciation to the caregivers at Lake Superior Hospice and Eastwood Nursing Center for the many kindnesses and courtesies extended to Skip, Shirley, and family these past few years. The care and compassion he received, truly made his residence at Eastwood, quality time.

Christiana M. Smyth
SKANDIA -- Christiana M. Smyth, 17, of 682 M-94 West, died Sunday, February 17, 2002 shortly after admission to Marquette General Hospital.

She was born December 19, 1984 in Skandia and had lived in the area all her life.

Christiana is survived by her parents, Daniel and Suzanne Smyth of Skandia; three sisters; Danika and Miriam of Skandia and Angela of Virginia, five brothers; Lemuel, Daniel, Micah, Cody and Gabriel of Skandia, grandmothers Agnes Smyth and Millicent Montgomery of Marquette and grandparents Park and Joyce Ogden of Michigan and formerly of Munising died on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 8:55 a.m. at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport, Wisconsin and had lived in the Marquette area most of her life. She had been employed at the Mining Journal for several years and for the Women's Center Bingo Program. Marilyn enjoyed playing Bingo as well as trips to the casino with family and friends.

She is the loving mother of three daughters, Sheila Gustafson of Gwinn, Cheryl (Michael) Brister of Niceville, FL and Angelique French of Fairbanks, AK; dear grandmother of Alyssa, Samantha, Rylee, Leeza, Angelina, Ebb, Dentin, Tristin, and Cole; also surviving are two sisters and one brother.

A memorial service will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with Chaplain Leon Jarvis officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home beginning at 2 p.m. until the time of services on Friday.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Women's Center, 1310 S. Front Street, Marquette, MI 49855.

Paul Arthur Numikoski, Jr.

PALMER -- Paul Arthur Numikoski, Jr. age 58, of 104 Kirkpatrick Ave., Palmer died at 4:15 A.M. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for 2 weeks.

Paul was born Feb. 25, 1943 in Ishpeming to Tekla (Gustafson) and Paul A. Numikoski, Sr. He was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1960. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1960-1963, having served in Germany. He joined the Michigan University. She excelled as a teacher at the grade school level. She taught for more than 25 years in both public and Catholic schools in Escanaba, Naperville, IL and St. Johns, MI. She touched the lives of many young people who had the good fortune to have her as a teacher. She particularly enjoyed her many years as a teacher and librarian at St. Joseph Catholic School in St. Johns, and the friendship of fellow teachers and staff. She was also a terrific mother and devoted spouse. She loved her children with her whole heart and willingly made many sacrifices for her family. She was very dedicated to her Catholic faith. She also had a liberal streak, which was evidenced by her membership in the American Civil Liberties Union.

In 1958, Zita married Robert J. Dianda whom she had met when she returned to college. They settled in St. Johns where they raised their family. Robert survives his wife. Also surviving are one daughter, Roberta Motz and husband Peter; one son, John Salemi and wife Leslie; and four grandchildren, Anna and Taylor Motz and Alex and Libby Salemi; two sisters, Ann Fassbender of Lombard, IL and Jean Schwenk of Schwenksville, PA; three brothers, Raymond Buchkoe of Marquette, Basil Buchkoe of Iron Mountain and Gerard Buchkoe of Sparks, NV; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Andrus and Michael; and one sister, Mary Jane. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am Saturday, February 23, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Eoin Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8pm Friday at the Osgood Funeral Home, (989) 224-2365, with rosary being prayed at 8pm Friday. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Education Trust Fund.
