Albert Francis Drake
PLYMOUTH -- Servcies for Albert Francis Drake, 87, of Plymouth, were held March 25, 2001 at The Plymouth Knights of Columbus Hall with the Rev. David Lesniak officiating.
Mr. Drake was born March 10, 1914 in Diorite, Michigan. He was a member of the American Legion #32 in Livonia. He was a life member of The Mayflower-Lt. Gamble V.F.W. Post #6695 in Plymouth, and he was a member of the local barber's union. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and traveling. He loved cards and being with his friends. For five years he played professional baseball for a team from Wisconsin, Alva Olson of Marquette, and Helen Brotherton of Negaunee, and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be held in August.
Dillon Joseph Gould
SHINGLETON -- Dillon Joseph Gould, age 3, son of Todd Gould adn Mellissa Patterson, of E12344 Percy Road, Shingleton, died on Monday, April 9, 2001 at 4:50 p.m. in Chatham, Minnesota to the late Lloyd and Eleanor (Stenehjen) Anderson. He graduated from the University of Michigan University athletics.
Gary will be remembered for his insatiable love of family, friends, golf and life.
Survivors include one son, Patrick A. Anderson of East Lansing, MI; three daughters, Kris (Jim) McMahon of St. Paul, MN, Lisa (Robert) O'Neill and Leslie (Jeff) Pieper, both of Marquette; four grandchildren, Saundra and Katy O'Neill, Megan McMahon and Andrew Pieper; one sister, Denise (Jeff) Apperson of Durango, CO; also two nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents was his wife, Beverly "Bev" Anderson on April 23, 1995.
Friends may call at the Canale- Tonella Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. A time of remembrance will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Nancy Amacher of Messiah Lutheran Church officiating.

Jere D. Aldred
ISHPEMING -- Jere D. Aldred, age 61, passed away on April 7, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a resident for the past two months.
Jere was born April 19, 1939 in Flint, MI to Ruth (Crosby) and the late Jeremiah Aldred. He spent a large number of years working as a plumber in the Flint area. He moved to Marquette in the late 1970's, married Lois Ridell in 1979 and eventually settled in Ishpeming where he ran his business D'Plumb Plumbing and Heating. He was a member of the Plumber & Pipe Fitters of America Union, Local #370 and the Calvary Church in Negaunee. He had a great love for fishing and hunting, especially with his family and friends. He loved to meet and talk with new people and always had a smile and a story to share.
He is survived by his wife Lois Aldred of Ishpeming; his mother Ruth Aldred of Flint; 6 daughters- Cheryl Tabor of Flint, Tina (Jeff) Cohen of Grand Blanc, Tamara (Donald) Madden of Grand Blanc, Charyn (Jose Vega) Aldred of Las Vegas, NV, Sherri Aldred of Marquette & Tanya Aldred of Lansing; 3 sons- Jim Beckman of Flint, Jere (Tina) Aldred of Ishpeming and John Aldred of
Grand Rapids; a brother Wm. "Sandy" (Ada) Aldred of Flint; 2 sisters- Bethany (Bud ) Mazzoline of Detroit and Diana (Dan) Smith of Michigan Technological University from 1946 until his retirement in 1978 and was conferred Associate Professor Emeritus status following his retirement. PK taught engineering graphics in the ME-EM department. He also served as the Director of Co-Op Programs, Campus Ombudsman, ME-EM Advisor and Commencement Marshall.
Paul's life long love of sports began as a student athlete (basketball, track and baseball) at John D. Pierce High School from which he graduated in 1934. He graduated with his B.S. degree from Northern Michigan in 1953. At MTU he was an active supporter of the athletic program for over 40 years. He was the longtime public address announcer for football, basketball and track. PK also served as a timer, scorer and judge for various athletic events at Tech. He was a member of the Athletic Council, Huskies Club (Board of Directors), Cager Club and Blue Line Club. His contributions were recognized with an Honorary "M" in 1961, the Ken Hamer Award for Huskies Club Booster of the Year in 1975, an MTU Blanket Award in 1979 and induction into the MTU Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was also a strong supporter of all his grandsons' activities and probably holds the Hopkins High School record for hockey games attended by a grandfather.
Paul was also honored for outstanding service to the university with the Clair Donavan Award in 1978. Professional affiliations, service clubs and community service included: the American Society of Engineering Education, the Cooperative Education Association, the American Legion, the B.P.O. Elks, Kappa Delta Psi, Past- Director of the MTU Credit Union and Past- President of the Houghton Housing Commission.
Prior to his career at MTU, Paul served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942-1946. He also taught high school and coached at Decatur High School from 1940-1942 at St. Ignace High School from 1938-1940.
Paul is survived and will be missed by his wife Elsie, daughter Barbara, son Richard, daughter-in-law Carol; grandchildren Jeremy and Ryan Olsen, Scott, Jeffrey and Michael Koski; brother Art and his wife Irma; sisters-in-law Mae Verlinde, Joan McKeown, and Onnie and Evelyn Koski; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers William and Emil (Buzz); and brothers-in-law Frank McKeown and Clarence Verlinde.
The family plans a memorial service in Houghton for relatives and friends this summer.
Richard N. Turri
VENICE, FLORIDA -- Richard N. Turri, a former Marquette resident, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2001 in Venice, Michigan, to the late William and Laimi (Larson) Turri.
He attended Michigan Technological University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and then worked for IBM in Rochester, Minnesota on April 18, 2001 and burial will take place in Rochester, Michigan. His parents enjoyed camping and walking with him. Dillon loved music and having other children around him. He liked to be held and was a real cuddler.
He is survived by his parents, Todd and Mellissa of Shingleton, a brother, Brandon Lee Monroe, sisters, Nicky and Devon Gould of Newberry, grandparents, Marie Gould of Shingleton and Debbie and Randy Hedson of Munising, godmother, Pam Gould of Chatham, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. His paternal grandfather, Joseph Gould, preceded Dillon in death.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. Pastors Mary Beth and Kurt Kovanen will conduct the funeral at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel in Munising on Thursday, April 12, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Mary E. Connors
ZEBA -- Mary E. Connors, age 70, of Zeba, passed away Monday, April 9, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital.
She was born on June 12, 1930, in L'Anse, daughter to the late William and Catherine "Margie" (Shofield) Emery. She grew up in L'Anse, then moved to Milwaukee, where she had lived for 50 years, moving to Zeba in 1996. Mary married Gerald Connors in 1970 in Zion, IL. She was a nurse and ran Hilltop House Nursing in Milwaukee.
Mary was a member of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Zeba, KBIC, and the Ojibwa Seniors. Mary had a love for her dogs.
She is survived by her husband Gerald of Zeba, son Patrick Connors of Zeba, brothers William (Gretchen) Emery, James (Millie) Emery both of Zeba, sisters Pat (Ray) Kemppainen of Baraga, Beverly (Pete) Ellsworth, and Gwen Loonsfoot both of Zeba, and many nieces and nephews.
Mary is preceded in death by her brothers Gerald "Tippy" and Ron Emery, sisters Jacqueline Cote and Virginia Shelifoe.
The funeral mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. at Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins. The visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Fr. Greg Heikkala will officiate. Burial will be in the Indian Pinery Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be his nephews Mark and Anthony Emery, Charles and Dan Gauthier, Jim and Jerry Shelifoe.
The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
Roy George Madsen
TISKILWA, IL -- Roy George Madsen, of Tiskilwa, IL., 81 died at 12:32 P.M. Tuesday, April 10, 2001 in Perry Memorial Hospital-Princeton. He was born September 23, 1919 at Buda, IL. The son of Herman and Blanche (Grubaugh), Madsen. He married Gladys Polson, February 1, 1942 in Tiskilwa. She died December 20, 1995. Surviving are 3 daughters, Kay (Gene) McCoy, Savoy, IL., Marilyn Pattelli, Lexington, Cynthia Hayes, Tiskilwa, 2 sons, Richard (Melaney) Madsen, Marquette, MI., Wayne (Linda) Madsen, Princeton, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, 1 sister, Alberta (Kenneth) Wilson, Litchfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin brother Ray Madsen and another brother H. Warren Madsen.
He farmed in the Tiskilwa area for over 30 years. Upon retirement he became a real estate broker, insurance agent and antique dealer. He was very active on the Bureau County Fair Board for over 20 years, having served as President for two terms. He was a 4 H Leader for 10 years, Member of University of Michigan, died April 10, 2001 at the age of 75. A resident of Lansing, Washington and Lori Schafer of Lansing; great grandson, Washington; 2 sisters, Idamae (Ellwood) Mattson of Marquette, Washington; and 1 brother, Lowell (Elizabeth) Wood of Manistique, Michigan for their care and support during Fern's illness.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lansing, Michigan. Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, Lansing, MI.
Helen G. Tall
ISHPEMING -- Helen G. Tall, age 82, of 1017 N. Third St., Ishpeming, passed away, Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at her home after a lengthy illness.
Helen was born July 28, 1918 in Ishpeming to the late John & Anna (Stenglein) Saxwold. She was a life long Ishpeming resident. Helen attended St. Johns Elementary School, and graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1935. She worked as the office manager for MacDonald & Kake Construction worked and also worked for Metropolitan Insurance Company. She was a member of St. John the Evagelist Catholic Church.
Helen is survived by her husband of 51 years Robert C. "Mulla" Tall of Ishpeming, a son Michael Tall of Ishpeming and a daughter Patricia (William) Zhulkie of Ishpeming, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Tall of Champion, 4 grandchildren; Andrew & Adam Tall, Mary & Robert Zhulkie, special niece Gerry Nault of Marquette, special nephews Robert (Rose) Saxwold Jr. & Tim (Shelley) Saxwold both of Ishpeming, along with other nieces & nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Robert Saxwold Sr. and a sister-in-law Toni Poirier.
A funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service.
Pallbearers will be Andrew & Adam Tall, Robert & Tim Saxwold, Robert Antilla and Tom Myers.
Melvin "Memo" Hendrickson
REPUBLIC -- Melvin "Memo" Hendrickson, age 73, of 319 Hemlock St. Republic passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at his home.
Memo was born March 20, 1928 in Republic to Esther (Koski) and the late Otto Hendrickson. He graduated from Republic High School in 1945. He married Patricia Levi on August 15, 1953 in Republic.
Memo worked for Johnson Motors in Waukegan, IL then as a Fire Tower Observation Officer in Republic. Later he managed Memo's Shell Station in North & South Republic for 19 years. Memo worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 28 years, retiring in 1983.
Memo was a member of the Republic Lions Club, Republic Volunteer Fire Department, and was named Fireman of the Year 1977 by Marquette County. He enjoyed bowling, fishing & hunting. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church.
Memo is survived by his wife Patricia Hendrickson of Republic, his mother Esther Hendrickson of Republic, 2 daughters Pamela (Robert) VanBuskirk of Lapel, IN, Lee Duquette and friend Nicolay Ungureanu of Huntington Beach, CA, a son John (Beth) Hendrickson of Brandon, FL, 3 brothers Wesley (Elaine) Hendrickson of Iron Mountain, MI, Dr. Lester (fiance Carolyn Peppin) Hendrickson of Mesa, AZ, Dr. Curtis (Sue) Hendrickson of Green Bay, WI, sister in law Alice Hendrickson of Scotia, NY, 8 grandchildren Scott & Sam Hazen, Shannon (Brad) Templeton, Cody VanBuskirk, Ashton, Ian and Brett Hendrickson & Nolan Duquette, 2 step grandchildren Robert & Eva VanBuskirk, 2 great grandchildren Elizabeth & Tyler, several nieces & nephews. Memo was preceded in death by his father Otto and a brother Kenneth.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with the Rev. Lance Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Republic Twp. Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Pallbearers will be Derwin and Dr. Michael Hendrickson, Gene Koski, Randy Kurin, Paul & Joe DuMoulin.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Gerald Matt "Kutti" Ketola, Sr.
GWINN -- Gerald Matt "Kutti" Ketola, Sr., 71, of Cataract Road, Gwinn, died Tuesday afternoon at his home with his daughter by his side.
Kutti was born November 3, 1929 in Princeton, MI, a son of Onni and Senja (Maki) Ketola and has been a lifelong resident of the area. He served in the army and was a Korean War Veteran. Mr. Ketola was employed as a bus driver for the Gwinn Public School.
Mr. Ketola is survived by his children, Diana L. Ketola of Traverse City, Gerald M. "Mutti" Ketola, Jr. of Gwinn, Linda S. Ketola of Gwinn, Barry M. (Karen) Ketola of Freeland, MI; a brother, Paul (Karen) Ketola of Princeton; seven sisters, Elain Ellman of Gwinn, Shirley Willig of Princeton, Lois Jacobson of Princeton, Sheila (John) Rastello of Princeton, Mavis (Bob) Jancis of Gwinn, Nancy (John) Paris of Princeton and Ruthie (Jay) Crist of Gwinn; three grandchildren, Matthew J. Pratter of Los Angeles, CA, Bobbi L. Ketola of Gwinn and Morgan N. Ketola of Freeland. His parents and two brothers, Richard and Kenny preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 PM in the Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn with the Rev. George Kaiser officiating. The family will receive guests at the church one hour prior to the service.
The Gwinn Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Bernard R. Smith
MARQUETTE -- Bernard R. Smith, 78, of 1513 Lynn Ave., died Thursday, April 12, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born November 16, 1922 in Yreka, CA to Robert and Edna (Edmonds) Smith and had lived in this area since 1953. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945. In 1946, he began his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, retiring as senior scientist in the lamprey division in 1980. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Bernard is survived by his wife, the former Claris Dailey, to whom he had been married for 59 years; a daughter Linda (Fred) DePre" of Grapevine, TX, two sons, Stephen Smith of Wetmore, MI and Kenneth (Debra) Smith of Green Bay, WI, and three grandchildren, Adrian, Colin and Michael DuPre".
Visitation will be at the Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home from 1:00- 2:00 PM this afternoon. Private family services will be held later.
