Wilbert "Webe" Niemi, 79, of Calumet died on October 31, 1999. He was born March 16, 1920, a son of John and Justina Niemi. He married Theresa in 1959. He is survived by a son, John and Tonia Larson of Calumet; two daughters, mary and James Clark; agnes Urban of Albuquerque, NM; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dennis R. Destrampe, 59, of Hubbell, died on Monday, November 1, 1999. He was born in Houghton on July 4, 1940, a son of Raymond and Carole (Quasius) Destrampe. Dennis had worked in Alaska for 15 years before returning to the area where he was employed at UP Engineeris and Architects in Houghton. He was currently employed by the Houghton County Road Commission. He is survived by his wife, Gloria (Hodges) Destrampe of Hubbell; his mother, Carole of Ripley; his father Ray of Houghton, a sister, Rosalie and John Townsend of Ripley; two brothers, Keith Destrampe of Traverse City and David Destrampe of Ripley; and two nieces.

Clarence "Scurb" Durocher, 86, of Freda, died on October 29, 1999. Clarence was born on January 6, 1913, in Freda, the son of Louis and Emily (Fecteau) Durocher. He married Laila Pekkala in Detroit on December 19, 1936. Surviving are his wive, three son, Clarence, Clyde and Stan; two daughters, Darlene, and Janet and Steve Borkowski; two daughters-in-law, Mary, and Carol and Bill Vater; one sister, Libby Savukoski of Freda; two brothers, Raymond and Gertrude of Freda, Marshall of LeLand, FL; seven grandsons, five granddaughters; and one great grandson.

Shirley A. Kemppainen, 69, died on Oct. 31, 1999. She was born on Dec 3, 1929, in Hancock, the daughter of Arvo and Sally (Myllyla) Walitalo. She married Bruce Kemppainen in 1950, he died in 1981. She was the manager of the Finnish Cultural Center in Redford and one of the founders of the center. Shirley is survived by two sons, Robert and Cathy Kemppainen of South Lyon, and John and Shirley of L'Anse; daughters, Christine and Christopher Dobson of Redford, Mary and Don Takala of Keweenaw Bay, Jane of Allen Park, Sally of L'Anse, and Pamela Smith of Redford Township; six grandchildren; and a brother, Paul and Jean Walitalo of Pelkie.

Ellen Sophia Herrala, 86, of L'Anse, died on Oct. 30, 1999. She was born on April 12, 1913, in Pequaming, the daughter of Michael and Ida (Beldo) Haanpaa. She married RAymond Herrala in 1935, he died on August 4, 1999. She is survived by two sons, Richard and Debby of Baraga and William and Ann of Walled Lake, MI; a daughter, Ellen and Darrell Giddings of L'Anse; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

George R. Cardinal, 70, died on October 25, 1999, in St. Paul, MN. George was the son of Rose Mary Hill, is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Tracy; and a daughter, Carole of St. Paul, and a daughter Betty, and brother Bill of Baraga.

Helen E. Mittelsdorf, 88, of the Copper Country, died on October 29th at the Goerlich Center for Alzheimer Care in Sylvania, OH. She was born on January 23, 1911, in Copper City, the daughter of Albert and Anna Laity. She married Edward D. Mittelsdorf of Laurium in 1930. Surviving are a son, Fred of Brighton; a daughter, Marilyn and Sam Gallo of Crossville, TN; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel and William Eisenhart of York, PE, and Shirley and John birch of Pinconning, MI.

Elmer L. Johnson, 76, of Traprock Valley, died on October 29, 1999. He was born on april 5, 1923, in Skandia, MI, the son of Leanus and Hilda (Stack) Johnson. He grew up in the Iron Mountain. Elmer was a craftsman, known for his cabinetry, wood carving (including the back bar at the Old Country Haus, in Kearsarge) and Klondike cedar canvas canoes. He married Jean Kiilunen in 1945. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carol Johnson and her husband John Hendrickson of Marquette; three sons, Robert and Kathleen of Lake Linden, rodney and Suzanne of Negaunee, and Roger and Terry of Lake Linden, 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a brother, Dean and Rose of Skandia; and a sister, Marian and Larry Johnson of Detroit.

Amelia "Minx" Zelensky, 87, of South Range, passed away on October 28, 1999. She was born on october 26, 1912, in Baltic, a daughter of Frederico and Julia (Cortopassi)Raffaelli. She was married to Lyle Hodges and later Louis Zelensky who both preceded her in death. Surviving are two sisters, Marie Baima of Baltic, and Rose Hagwell of Bellview, FL.

Alice "Jeanne" Olson, 82, of Ontonagon, died on October 23, 1999, at her winter home in BareFoot Bay, FL. She was born on April 11, 1917, in Ontonagon to Walter and Ethel (Lockerby) klapperich. She married Nolan Olson in 1936. She is survived by her husband and three sons, Robert and Alice of Potomac, Md, Kenneth and Kaye of Onalaska, WI and John and Liz of Encinitas, CA; seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Pearl (Willoughby) Bone, 85, of Centennial in the summer and a winter resident of Nashville, TN, died on October 26, 1999. She was born on June 21, 1914, in Centennial, a daughter of James and Hazel (Richards) Willoughby. She married George Bone in 1935. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Hewitt of Bowling Green, KY, Carol and Rondol Cartwright of Nashville; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Burial in the lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

Edwin R. Kerttu, 76, of Atlantic Mine died on October 26, 1999. He was born on October 23, 1923 in Atlantic Mine, a son of Levi and Grta (Wilhelmina)Kerttu. He work for Michael Messner Forest Products in Toivola. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII in Europe. Surviving are two sisters, Laila Kerttu of Atlantic Mine and Edna and Joseph Ozanich of Berkley, MI.

Theodore R. Anderson, 79, of Negaunee, died on October 25, 1999. He was born on November 26, 1919, in Negaunee, to M. Leander and Edla (Gustafson) Anderson. He had been employed by the US Civil Service as a carpenter at K.I. Sawyer A.F.B for over 20 years, retiring in 1980. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Evelyn G. (Hagstrom); three sons, Ted and Karla of Laurium, Thomas and Kathleen of Calumet, David and Betty of Harvey; twin daughters, Marlys and George McFall, missionaries in Taichung, Taiwan, Mary Jean and Rev. William Rowland of Munising, 13 grandchildren, a brother, Reuben Melander of Versailles, MO; two sisters, Esther Milbrandt and Ruth Ochalo, both of Versailles, MO.

John Porter, 69, of Baraga, died on October 26, 1999. He was born on November 25, 1929 in Detroit to John and Marietta (Johnson)Porter. In 1978, he married Carol Verheist of Ironwood. He is survived by his wife, Carol; three sons, John and Chris of Algonac, MI, Ken and Lisa of Clinton Twp, Scott and Donna of Roseville, MI; three daughters, Helen and Mike McCormack of Warren, MI, Debbie of Las Vegas, Kathy of East Point; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Ron of Ft. Pierce, FL, Ken of Clinton, Twp, and Dennis of Algonac; two sisters, June Juchemich of Ishpeming and Helen Wonderly of Lake of the Ozarks, MO.

Hilda M. Ruohoniemi, 94, of Hancock, died on October 26, 1999. She was born on May 4, 1905 in Demond Location, a daughter of Matti and Maria (Peltohahka)Ruohoniemi. Hilda had worked at the Book Concern Printers in Hancock for many years, eventually owning the company. Surviving are a sister, Sigrid Lassila of Houghton; a brother, Rev. Mathias Ruohoniemi, a resident patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Elizabeth DeMars, 75, of Ishpeming, died on October 21, 1999. She was born on April 21, 1924, in Louisville, KY. She served in the US Navy (WAVES). She is survived by a son, John and nancy Douglas of Orland Park, IL; a daughter, Ann and Stephen Fleming of Munster, IN; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

Lucille Gagnon, 75, of Lake Linden, died on October 21, 1999. She was born in Lake Linden on January 18, 1924, a daughter of Walter and Margaret (LaTendresse) Racine. She married LeRoy Sodini who preceded her in death. On July 3, 1944, she married Wilfred Gagnon, he died in 1998. Surviving are four sons, Roger and Lucy Sodini of Crystal Falls, Gary and Barbara Gagnon of Marquette, Glenn and Peggy Gagnon of Marquette, Danny and Carolyn Gagnon of Plover, WI; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn and Bert Poirier of Lake Linden.

Nettie Maki, 91, of Ontonagon, passed away on October 21, 1999. She was born on July 6, 1908, in rockland. In 1925, she married Elmer maki. He died in 1991. She is survived by her daughter, Doris Hill; three grandchildren, Nancy and Alan Holmes, Peggy Hill, and Michael and Beth Ann Hill; five great-grandchildren.

Estelle Posey, 89, of White Pine, died on October 16, 1999. She was born on March 30, 1912 in Baltic, the daughter of Peter and Elsie (Beck)Priniski. She married Raymond Posey in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1991. She was known as Grandma Posey to all. She is survived by a son, Joseph and Sharon; a granson David and Laura; a great-grandchild; a sister, Carol Gravier of Baraga; and a brother-in-law, Frances and Betty Posey of Winter Haven, Fl.

Marie E. Sullivan, 93, of Calumet died on October 20, 1999. Marie was born on January 13, 1906, in Laurium, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Viani. She moved to Detroit in 1933 to make her home and lived there until 1972 when she moved back to Calumet. She married John B. Sullivan in 1929, he died in 1978. She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen and D. Paul Williams of Brighton; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Oliver Rheault, 80, of Lake Linden died on Oct. 20, 1999. He was born in Bootjack on April 29, 1919, a son of Albert and Oliven (Codere) Rheault. Oliver was a bus dirver for the Lake Linden-Hubbell School System for 44 years. On June 30, 1945, he married Marie Gagnon of Lake Linden. Surviving are his wife, a son, Larry and Sandy of Lake Linden; a daughter, Shirley and Larry Perreault of LittleTraverse Bay; three grandsons; and a brother, Reuben and Margaret of Bootjack.

Rudolph Ekdahl, 78, of Mohawk, died on October 20, 1999. Rudy was born on July 18, 1921, in Dover Location, a son of John and Flora Ekdahl. Surviving are his wife Dorothy; a brother, Paul and Eleanor Ekdahl of Paavola Location; five step-sons, Ken and Cookie Bedore of CA, Mike and Sharon Dedore of Calumet, Gray Bedore of FL, Robert Bedore of Marquette; and numerous step-grandchildren.

Dennis J. Poisson, 97, of Lake Linden, died on October 19, 1999. He was born in Hubbell on October 9, 1902, a son of Denri and Jane (Toutant)Poisson. He married Ozeline Perreault in 1927, she died in 1986. Surviving are a son, Wayne and Carol of Lake Linden; a daughter, Nancy and James Haralson of Addica, MI; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Burial in the Mount Calavary Cemetery.

Arnold David "Bud" Kaikko, 62, of Greenland, died on October 19, 1999. He was born on April 28, 1937, in Simar, MI, to John and Mae (Mattson) Kaikko. Bud is survived by his wife, Diana; his son, Alan and Deb of Greenland; a daughter, Ann and Garth Jurgensen of South Range, and Dawn and Corey King of Glendale, AZ, two grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley and jack Pattison of Greenland.

Clarence DeRoche, 59, of Lake Linden, died on October 17, 1999, following an apparent heart attack. He was born in Lake Linden on April 18, 1940, a son of Veronica (Krischwent) DeRoche. In 1961, he married Jean Whittaker of Calumet. Surviving are his wife, a son, Barney and Pam of Sterling Heights; two daughters, Michelle of Calumet and Nickey and Doug Hebner of Dollar Bay; five grandchildren; three brothers, Lawrence and Joann , Raymond, and Jerome and Vera; three sisters, Pauline and Ron Frazer, Theresa and Gary Wakeham, and Donna Ravet. Burial in the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mary A. Lencioni, 87, of Franklin Mine, died on October 17, 1999. She was born in Trimountain on January 14, 1912, a daughter of Paul and Mary (Zauhar)Ozanich. She married Joseph Lencioni, Jr. in 1935. He died in 1991. She is survived by a son, Paul and Yvonne of White Pine; a daughter, Margaret Kemper of Munising; three brothers, Tony and Mildred Ozanich of Dollar Bay, George and Joan Ozanich of Tamarack City, and John and Dorothy Ozanich of Manistique; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

John Meyers, 88, of Calumet, passed away on October 18, 1999, in the Florence Villa Nursing Home. He was born in Bete Gris, a son of John and Hilda Meyers. In 1934, he married Anne Shafer. John worked as a carpenter for Herman Gundlack Construction and was also an amateur radio operator. He is survivied by his daughter, Joan and Joe Hendrickson of Calif; a son, Bob Meyers of Vulcan; and three grandchildren.

Lillian Stenfors, 90, of Ontonagon, died on October 15, 1999. She was born to Israel and Camille (Hansen) Harnish in Ontonagon on December 17, 1908. She married Reuben Stenfors in August of 1939. He preceded her in death in January of 1998. She is survived by three sons, Harlan and Helen Dahlquist of Rochester Hills, Glen and Terry Dahlquist of White Pine, and Lyle and Lynn Stenfors of Elk Grove, IL; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Helen M. Simons, 86, of Houghton, died on October 15, 1999. She was the daughter of Charles and Maria Merila, born on April 28, 1913, in Wolverine Location. She is survived by three sons, Kenneth of Minneapolis, Richard of Houghton, Dale of Houghton; a daughter, Sharon and James Nordstrom of Superior Location; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Rose and Marvin Robertson of White Pine, Florence and Walter Hautamaki of Bruce Crossing; and two brother, Charles Merila of West Allis, WI, Uno Merila of Hurontown.

G. Betty Allwin, 74, of Lake Linden, died unexpectedly on October 16, 1999. She was born in Lake Linden on October 6, 1925, the daughter of James and Gertrude (Martin) Stevens. She had been employed by the former Calumet Public Hospital and also owned and operated Betty's Cafe in Lake Linden. Surviving are her husband Eugene "Pap", two brothers, Robert and marie Stevens, and James Stevens of Lake Linden; two sisters, Lorraine and Gerard Codere of Lake Linden and Joyce Stevens of Kalamazoo.

Aarne S. Oikkonen, 95, of L'Anse, died on October 15, 1999. He was born on August 26, 1904, in South Range, a son of the late Sakari and Sophie (Hepo Oja) Oikkonen. He married the former Evelyn Strieleman in 1929. Aarne taught music in the Caro, Lapeer and Wyandotte, Public Schools. He is survived by his son, Thomas of Green Cove Springs, FL; a daughter, Patricia and Henry Clow of Aura; a sister, Martha Wedlake of L'Anse, three grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

Lempi Maria Eskola, 97 of South Range, died on October 14, 1999. She was born on March 5, 1902, in Elo. She married George Paulson in 1923. She later married Eino Eskola he passed away in 1973. Surviving are two daughters, Alice and Bill Bloomfield of Sun City AZ, and Gladys and Walter hjalmquist of Ruidoso, NM; a son Clifford Paulson of Chassell; nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor Nagel Barnes of Petaloma, CA; and a brother, Ernest Juntunen of South Range.

Alleen Dessellier, 70, of Lake Linden, passed away on October 15, 1999. She was born on November 30, 1028 in Lake Linden, a daughter of Placid and marie (Lefebvre) Beaudoin. She married Guy Dessellier in 1946. Surviving are her husband, seven sons, Cliff and Marie of Hubbell, Mel and Pat of Lake Linden, Glenn and Donna of Kiel, WI, Edward and Roberta of Dollar Bay, Chris of Lake Linden, Rich and Sahri fo Hubbell, Dean of Norway; five daughters, Donna and Bill Hannon of Mohawk, Germain and Dave Dube of Hancock, Char and Tom Van of Stephenson, Lynn and John Patterson of Newberry, Pam Dessellier of Dollar Bay; 33 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Clement and Dorothy Beaudoin of Lake Linden; a sister, Dorothy and Leo Baillargeon of Calumet; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruth Rapson, 94, of Ahmeek, died on October 13, 1999. She was born on August 26, 1905 in Ahmeek, a daughter of Thomas and Beatrice Knight. She married T. Harold "Pat" Rapson on June 21, 1930, he died in 1967. Surviving are a daughter, Marcia and harry Bennetts of Calumet; three grandchildren, Rick and Pam Bennetts, Patti R. Ball, Ronald and Heidi Bennetts; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Helen E. Van Haecke, 81, of L'Anse, died October 143, 1999. She was bron on December 18, 1917, in Hancock, a daughter of the late Matt and Evelina (Valimaki) Autio. She married Camiel "Bill" Van Haecke. She is survived by a daughter, Ann Marie and Dale Mitchell of Memphis, TN; a sister, Martha Miilu of L'Anse; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Edwin L. Champion, 95, of Houghton, died on Octobre 13, 1999. He was born on October 5, 1904, in Houghton. Ed taught school under the late Fred Jeffers and later became President of the State Board of Education. He also taught in Lower Michigan and was Superintendent of Schools in Menominee County. Following the death of his father in 1944, he returned to Houghton and assumed the operation of the Champion Monument Company. He retired in 1974. He was married to Florence Wickley. She died in 1975. Surviving are a brother-in-law, Alfred Wickley of Hancock; and several nieces and nephews.

Joshua Deaton, 21, of Hurontown, died on October 13, 1999, following a long illness. He was born on November 11, 1977, in Kalamazoo, a son of Fred Deaton and Diane Schumacher. Surviving are his mother and step-father; Diane Schumacher and Jose Guindo of Hurontown; his father, Fred of Texas; two brothers, Kenneth and Angie Schumacher of Chassell; two sisters, Kari and Ronald Coombs of Greenwood, IN, Yva Schumacher of Hurontown; grandparents; John and Marian Schumacher Jr. of Toivola, and Helen Darling of Bay City; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Patricia Ann Goudge, 65, of Quincy, died on October 11, 1999, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She was born on September 8, 1934, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of George and Georgiana Rose. She married Gordon "Duke" Archambeau in 1956, he died in 1971. She married Michael Goudge in 1974. She is survived by her husband, Michael; a daughter, Linda and Bill Hill of Hancock; a son, Donald "Duke" Archambeau of Dollar Bay; three grandchildren; sisters, Catherine and Bob Laplander, Coletta Rose, Mary Simonich, Evelyn hadinger; and her brother, Tom Rose.

Dennis E. "Pek" Pekkala, 51, of Harvey, died on October 10, 1999. He was born November 3, 1947, in Hancock, a son of Oscar and Esther (Kangas) Pekkala. He worked for the Upper Peninsula Power Company at the Presque Isle Plant for over 25 years. Currently he was employed by Wisconsin Electric as a Planner/Scheduler. He is survived by his wife, Karen (Beauchamp-Benson); a daughter, Bobbi Jo and Roy Trewhella-Francis of Ishpeming; a son, Dennis at home; a grandson; his mother, Esther of Hancock; a sister Arlene Shearer of Waterford; and a brother Alan of Hancock.

Phebe Virginia Campbell, 93, of L'Anse passed away on October 9, 1999. She was bron on December 4, 1905, in Duluth, MN to Samuel and Matilda (Holiday) Campbell. She is survived by a niece, Susan and Karl Presslein of L'Anse. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.

Margaret F. Richards, 89, of Ripley, died on October 8, 1999, at the St. Louis Park Plaza Nursing Home in St. Louis Park, MN. She was born on February 20, 1910 in Ripley, a daughter of Frederick and emma (Ritter) Fien. She married George H. Richards in 1923, he preceded her in death in 1970. She is survived by a son, Howard of Mound, MN; and several neices and nephews. Burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

Irene G. Hendrickson, 85, of Tamarack City, passed away on October 10, 1999. She was born on May 30, 1914, in Tamarack City, a daughter of Adeline and William Gerbe. In 1932, she married Carl W. Hendrickson, he died in 1976. Surviving are two daughters, Greta and John Larson of Menominee, Karen and Allan Brackett of McMillian, MI; two sons, Kenneth and Theresa of Lake Linden, and Ronald and Shyrl of Asheville, NC; 23 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne and Lawrence Dupuis of Lake Linden; and a brother, George and Helen Gerbe of Detroit.

Luella Jean Latvis, 60, of Hurontown, died on October 10, 1999, after a courageous fight against cancer. She was born on January 31, 1939, in Hurontown, a daughter of Rossmand Daniel Conney and Dolene Rickard Conney. In 1967, she started working at St. Joseph Hospital as a nurses aide. In 1969, she began her career as an operating room technician. Surviving are four daughters, Susan and Dr. John austin of Ontonagon, Julie and James Mattson of Eau Claire, WI, Jane and Phil Boggio of Birmingham, AL, Maribeth Latvis at home; three sons, Steven and Connie of Appleton, WI, Tim of Hurontown, Patrick of Brattleboro, Vt; 14 grandchildren; her mother, Dollie ; two sisters, Kathy and Warren Mattson of Sough Range, Carrie and Thomas Martilla of Iron Mountain; two brothers, Ross of Green Bay, and Daniel and Sandy Cooney of Green BAy.

Louis D. Koepel, 63, of Hubbell, died on October 5, 1999. He was born on February 19, 1936, in Hancock, a son of C. Helen (MacFarlane) Koepel and Louis G. Koepel. Louis taught music at Watersmeet, Chassell, Dollar Bay and the Lake Linden-hubbell Schools. Surviving are his mother; two brothers, Edward and Annette of Lake Linden, Robert P. and Virginia of Chicago Ridge, IL; and two sisters, Naomi Kolb of Yuma, AZ, Mary Ann and Gerald Heide of Napervile, IL. Burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Joseph J. Gedvillas, 74, of Houghton, died on October 4, 1999. He was born on May 10, 1925, in Painesdale, a son of Julius and Monica (Padkus) Gedvillas. Joe was a veteran, having served in the US Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant. Surviving are his wife Ruth (Schnabel); two sons, Jerry and Brigitta of Houghton, Dennis and Marsha of Houghton; two daughters, Diane and George Bell of Globe, AZ, JoLynn and Jim Goffin of Fairview, NC; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mae Ozanich of Houghton, and Mary Leinonen of Franklin, WI.

Katherine Radosevich, 89, of Copper City, passed away on October 2, 1999. Katherine was born in Croatia and came to the US as an infant, growing up in Ahmeek. She married Max Radosevich on October 11, 1930. He died in 1990. She is survived by her brother, John Polancich; son, Dan and Jean of Calumet; daughter, Maxine and Paul Myers of Lake Linden; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Ruth I. Niemi, 83, of Houghton, died on October 1, 1999. She was born on July 6, 1916, in Hancock, a daughter of Tobias and Hilda (Wirsula) Wiitanen. She married Emil Henry Niemi on May 30, 1947, he died in 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Clarissa and Ken Dorman, Jr of Houghton, a grandson, Kenneth Dorman of Houghton; a granddaughter, Christie and Brett Gayheart of Midland; a brother, Arthur and Marie Wiitanen of Hancock, one sister, Zoila Hannula of South Range.

Louis Laurich, 86, of Trenary, died on October 1, 1999. He was born September 9, 1913 in Newberry, a son of Charles and Frances (Rousch) Laurich. Louie married Ione E. Ellis in 1949. He is survived by his wife; daughters, Linda and Mike Gagnon of Chassell; and Leanne and Bill Soumis of Grand Rapids; five grandsons; brother, John and Doris of Spring Hill, FL; sisters, Olga and Art Grainger of Chatham and Angela Lustick of Gladstone..

Robert Simula, 71, a former Calumet businessman died on September 30. 1999. He was bron on December 28, 1927 in Ahmeek, a son of Hannah and Willaim Simula. Bob was a veteran of WWII, serving with the US Army. He was owner and operator of the Simula Oil Company in Calumet for 23 years, retiring in 1987. In 1950, he married Shirley Hepting. Surviving are his wife; a son, Bruce and paula of Ahmeek; a daughter, Colleen and David Rheault of Mohawk; four grandchildren; a sister, Marie and Arthur Harjala of Copper City; and an aunt, Anne Bragg of Dearborn Heights. Burial in the Lake View Cemetery.

Einard "Butch" Rissanen, 87, of Atlantic Mine died on Sept. 29, 1999. He was born on November 22, 1911 in Trimountain, a son of Peter and Aina (Niskanen) Rissanen. Butch had worked for Copper Range Stores as a butcher, then for Landish Co in Cudahy, for Vertin Brothers and for the Coast to Coast Store in Hancock. In 1961, he married Eleanor Niskey. He is survived by his wife, a sister, Esther Corombos of Bradenton, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

P. "Kenny" Somero, 64, of Elo, died on Sept. 28, 1999. He was born on October 30, 1934, in Elo, a son of Michael and Hannah (Hadja) Somero. Kenny worked as a mechanic and also did woodswork. Surviving are two sisters, Esther Kilpela of Misery Bay, Bertha Silvola of Chassell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry S. Kotajarvi, 36, of Laurium, died on Sept 27, 1999, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where he had been a resident patient for the past six years. He was born in Laurium on December 14, 1963, a son of Kenneth and Sandra (Waisanen) Kotajarvi. He worked for Jim's Pizza in Calumet and for Copper Country Dairy in Dollar Bay until becoming disabled with Multiple Sclerosis. Surviving are a son, Steven of Laurium; his father, three brothers, Mark of Laurium, Darren and Melba of Palmer, MI, Daniel and Gail of Florida Location; three aunts, Marion and Tom Kaipio ; Ruth Waisanen; Helen and Don Waarala; three uncles, Marvin Waisanen; John and Becky Waisanen; Matt Waisanen; two nieces and one nephew.

Dr. Francis Higgins, 79, of Calumet, passed away on Sept. 27, 1999, from an apparent heart attack. He was born in Canada and was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired dentist from the Chicago area. He is survived by a nephew, Nick and Julie Kent of Ahmeek; his wife, Clara; and eight children.

Aileen M. J. Kaurala, 85, of Tapiola, died on Sept. 26, 1999. She was born on November 18, 1913, in Superior Mine Location, a daughter of Matt and Johanna (Isoniemi) Kipina. She married Bruno H. Kaurala in 1941, he died in 1988. Surviving are three sons and one daughter, Rev. Dr. Earl and Helen Kaurala of Marquette, Paul and Jean Perala Kaurala of Marquette, Eunice and C.J. Grognet of Chassell and Scottsdale, AZ, Douglas Kaurala of Hancock; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother Ernest and Mariam Kipina of Superior Location; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Matilda A. Kinnunen, 91, a former resident of Hancock, died on September 26,1999, at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette. She was born on January 16, 1908, in Franklin Mine, a daughter of John and Anna Marie (Moilanen) Kovala. She married Urho I. Kinnunen in 1934, he died in 1983. She is survived by nieces and nephews whom she raised, Victoris and James Tourtillott of Marquette, Judith and James Greene of St. Germain, WI, Carl and Janet Suvanto of Hancock, Henry and Dawn Suvanto of Tamarack City, Mary and John Brown of Clarkston, MI.
