Viola I. Rasinen, 80, of Lac La Belle, died March 2, 2000. She was born on April 14, 1919 in Boston Location to Uno and Anna (Rautio) Pohjola. She married Robert Rasinen in 1939 in Detroit. Surviving are her husband Bob; two daughters, Judy and Larry Clark of Fowlerville and Linda Terry of Ypsilanti; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Helgren and Helen Beall; and several nieces and nephews.

Minni L. Hicks, 82, of Marquette, passed away at the home of her daughter, Pat Hicks' following a lenghty illness. She was born April 11, 1917, in Alexander, WV, a daughter of Ercie and Limon Duke. She married Thomas Dayton Hicks in 1939, in Syre, PA and he passed away in 1996. Surviving are a son, Stormy and Elizabeth Carlton Hicks of Bloomfield Hills; a daughter, Patricia Ann Hicks of Marquette; and four grandchildren, DAyton, Nathan, Theodore, and Chancellor.

Fred Leppanen, 93, of Hancock, died on March 2nd. He was born March 13, 1906, in Calumet, a son of Andrew and Matilda (Tuohiluoma) Leppanen. He lived in Ferndale, MI, where he worked for 26 years for Ford Motor Company in Highland Park. He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving during WW II. He is survived by a brother, Wesley and Aileen Leppanen of Centerline, MI; and a niece, Betty and Reg Moore, who resided with Fred and took care of him.

Ilmi L. Seppi, 83 of Kingsford, died on February 25, 2000. Mrs Seppi was born in Chicago, IL, a daughter of Victor and Elin (Selin) Watia. She married Elmer Seppi in 1938, he died in 1977. She was the first female civil engineer to graduate from Michigan Technological University. Ilmi was involved in building and operating blast furnaces during WWII. She leaves two sons, Lenn and Joann Seppi, and Carl of Iron Mountain; a daughter Ruth and Lyle Klemz of Lehr, ND; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Esther L. "Peggy" Likovich, 80, of Hancock, died on February 29, 2000. She was born Nov. 12, 1919, in Hancock, a daughter of Adolph and Wilhelmina (Heikki) Autio. She worked for 12 years as a legal secretary for the Dept. of Social Services and prior to her retirement, owrked for the Book Concern Printers in Hancock. Surviving are a brother, Oscar Autio of Hancock; and a sister, Helen Abramson of Hancock.

Ralph J. Wenberg, 76, of Dollar Bay, died on February 28, 2000. He was born in Dollar Bay on january 4, 1924, a son of Emil and Theresa (Hesse) Wenberg. He served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater in 1943 through 1945. He is survived by his wife, Esther; three brothers, Jack and Mary of Kenosha, WI, Robert and Virginia of Sheboygan Falls, WI, and Martin of the DJ Jocobetti Veteran's Center in Marquette; two sisters, Florence McEachen of Allen Park, MI and Dorothy and Bob Heinrich of Lakeland, FL.

Laina M. Pelto, 93, of Pelkie, died on February 28, 2000. She was born on June 4, 1906, in Pelkie, a daughter of Jacob and Maria (Toppari) Johnson. She married Alfred Pelto in 1928. He died in 1985. She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne (Weldon)Terry of Columbia, CA; a sister, Taimi and George Maki of Pelkie; and a brother, Arne and Alli Johnson of Stockton, CA.

Priscilla I. Phillippi, 70 of South Range, died unexpectedly on February 25, 2000, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, NV while visiting there. She was born on September 12, 1929, in Baltic, a daughter of Andrew and Clara (Trethewey) Sweet . In 1952, she married Orlando P. Phillippi. Pat worked for Copper Range Laundry in Houghton and prior to her retirement, worked for 18 years at Michigan Technological University in food service at Wadsworth Hall. She is survived by her husband, Londo of South Range; two daughters, Mary Lou and James Aho of Hancock, and Kathy and Robert Bonini of South Range; four grandchildren; one sister, Clara Rose of Dollar Bay; two brothers-in-law, Bruno Stasil of Baltic, Sylvio Guisfredi of White Pine; and a sister-in-law, Marion Sweet of Grand Haven, MI.

Loretta M. Siler, 68, of Hancock, died on February 27, 2000. She was born on April 27, 1931 in Trimountain, a daughter of Sidney and Alma (Vaataja) Dustan. She married Carl L. Siler in 1951. He preceded her in death in 1989. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra and Ken Millard of White Bear Lake, MN; three sons, Carl Jr, and Donald, obth of Hancock, and Robert and Lisa of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three brothers, Sidney and Judy Dunstan, Jr and paul Dunstan, both of Houghton, and James and Mariann Dunstan of Dodgeville; two sisters, Shirley Buckman of Houghton and Betty Lark of Kearsarge.

Gordon R. Nelson, 51, of Ishpeming, died on February 27, 2000, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Hancock on January 7, 1949, a son of Elwood and Mary (Tappani) Nelson. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Gordon was employed at the Empire Mine for over 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Ishpeming; two sons, Tracey and Paula Enrietti and Brian Enrietti, both of Ishpeming; three borthers, William and Donna Nelson of Lansing, Carl and Mary Nelson of Ishpeming, and Raymond and Rose Marie Nelson of Calumet; and three grandchildren.

Robert V. Vairo, Sr, 81, of Calumet died on Feb. 26, 2000. Bob was born June 25, 1918, in Calumet, a son of Dominic and Blanche Vairo. He married Martha Shokoski in 1950, she died in 1972. Bob is survived by a son, Robert of Calumet; a daughter, Catherine Spoor of Oldsmar, FL; two nieces, Virginia Dwyer of Calumet, Marilyn Kaifesh of IN; three nephews, Dr. Bruce MacDonald of Lake Linden, Mike Bausano of Calumet, and Tony Bausano of Calumet.

Olga M. Perander, 85, of Chassell, passed away on February 25, 2000. She was born August 5, 1914, in Chassell, a daughter of Matt and Mary (Autio) Jalkanen. In 1940 she married Uno Perander and he preceded her in death on February 29, 1962. Surviving are five children, John of Detroit, Jean and Dennis Lindgren of Rhinelander, WI, Jane and Dennis Kangas of Chassell, James and Margaret of Chassell, Bruce and Michelle of Gilbert, MN; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Matt and Pat Jalkanen of Chassell, Arthur Jalkanen of Detroit; four sisters, Ina and Toivo Huurto of Livonia, Gertrude and Robert Metzger of NC, Tina and Harry Dickinson of Oceanside, CA, and Lillian Pfeiffer of Livonia.

John Knodt, 93, of Hancock, died on February 23rd. He was born on December 2, 1906, in South Range, a son of John and Margaret Knodt. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Army. He retired from the Michigan Employment Security Commission in 1969 as manager of the Hancock Branch Office. John was married Mary Stimac in 1939. She preceded him in death in 1997. He is survived by a son, John and Sonia Knodt of Dollar Bay.

Ann Glowczynski, 86, of Calumet, passed away on February 24, 2000. She was born in Calumet, a daughter of Michael and Mary Schaltz. Surviving are three sisters, pauline Mahaffey of Houghton, Elizabeth Weaver of Chicago, and Frances Schaltz of Calumet.

Dorothy DesJardin, 77, of Lake Linden, died on February 24, 2000. She was born in Lake Linden Nov. 7, 1922, a daughter of Irving and Florida (Clouthier) Dulong. In 1943, she married Eugeene DesJardin, he died in 1992. Surviving are two sons, Allan and Keith of Lake Linden; a brother, Reuben and Valerie Dulong of Lake Linden; a sister, Marie Geshel of Lake Linden; one aunt and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Florence Schaltz, 90, of Laurium died on February 24, 2000. Florence was born Sept 15, 1909, in champion, MI. She married John Schaltz in 1934, he died in 1965. Survivors include a daughter, Janith and Florian Mohar of Ontonagon; two sons, Paul and Cathy of Oxford, MI, Keith and Kathy of Grand Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mabel and Reino Mattson of Republic, MI.

William Weijola, 48, of Laurium, died on February 24, 2000, at Portage Hospital in Hancock following an apparent heart attack at work. Bill was born on March 28, 1951, in Laurium, a son of Gunnard and Anna Weijola. He was employed with Gundlach-Champion Construction Company for over 23 years. He is survived by a daughter, Kallista; a son, Eric; both of Florida Location; this mother, a special friend, Marilyn Aaron; three sisters, Joanne and Earl Sterbenz of Rice Lake, Inez Horsma of Traprock, Debbie and Leslie Laplander of Milwaqukee; two brothers, Gunnard and Phyllis of Laurium, Carl and Sharon of Calumet; two aunts; two step brothers, Harold and Daniel Weijola; and a step sister, Shirley and John Clark all of Boston Location.

Sherry (Lindtrom) Store, 40, passed away on February 23, 2000. Sherry was born on June 14, 1959, in Hancock, a daughter of Roy and Helen (Laukka) Lindstrom. She married Steven Store in 1979. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Donald of Fort Bliss, TX and Danny, at home. She is also survived by her parents; a brother, Ray and Sheryl Lindstrom of Ontonagon; four sisters, Susie and Dave Guilbault of Ontonagon, Connie and Pete Thompson of Ontonagon, Shelly and Tom Quick of Clare, MI, and Carol and Bruce Seid of Pelican Rapids, MN; her grandmother, Viola Lindstrom of Dollar Bay; her father-in-law, Clarence Store of Ontonagon; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Mary Claire Kelly, 52, of Twin Lakes, died on February 22, 2000. Mary Claire was born on March 13, 1947, in Hancock, a daughter of Evelyn (Michaels) and William Rauhio. She married John M. Kelly in 1971. She was presently working for D N Bank in Hancock as manager of Loan Review. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Jennifer of houghton; a son John of Twin Lakes; a granddaughter, Megan Clare Kelly; her mother, Evelyn Rauhio of Hancock; a sister, Betty Ann and David Karna of Marquette; two nephews, Scott and Alan Karna; two aunts, Dorothy Roth of South Range and Rita Martin of Hancock.

Frances Anne Suppelsa, 90, of Calumet, died on February 21, 2000, in Coral Springs, FL. She was born in Calumet on February 2, 1910, a daughter of Frank and Mary Messner. She is survived by four children; Frances and William Hoffman of Hancock, Eugenne and nancy of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, Delores and Roger Charroux of Torrance, CA, and Antony and Sharon of Coral Springs, FL; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn R. Salo,75, of Houghton, passed away on February 21, 2000. She was born on February 25, 1924, in Ripley, a daughter of Thomas and Lillian (Barker) Rule. In 1945, she married Oliver "Scotty" Salo. He died in 1989. She is survivied by two daughters; Kathryn and Gary Hauswirth of Cheyenne, WY, Lois and Gary Shandley of Normal, IL; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a brother, Albert and Louise Rule of Hancock.

Florence J. Alatalo, 78, of Laurium, died on February 18, 2000. She was born on January 21, 1922, in Trimountain, a daughter of Otto and Alma (Piippo) Toivanen. In 1943, she married Edwin Alatalo. Edwin died in 1991. Surviving are a son, Clark of Brighton; three daughters, Kathleen and Lee Arten of Laurium, Marie of Evanston, IL, Sally of Chicago; three grandchildren, Isaac Arten, Linnea Arten and Ethan Arten; and a sister-in-law, Sally Ostrander of Battle Lake, MN.

Jean Elizabeth Nicholas, 93, of Hancock, died on February 19, 2000. She was born in Hancock on June 15, 1906, the daughter of Fred and Susan (Rashleigh) Schubert. She married Ralph Nicholas in 1938, he died in 1939. Jean is survived by a daughter, Gertrude and John Witting of Chassell; a grandson, Robert of Chassell; a granddaughter, Susan of Orlando, FL, and a great granddaughter, Sophia.

Arnold Olkkonen, 94, of South Range, died on February 17, 2000, at the DJ Jacobetti Veteran's Facility in Marquette. He was born on February 25, 1905, in South Range, a son of John and Anna (Kauranen) Olkkonen. He worked in Detroit at General Motors for 27 years, then moved to Beverly Hills, FL, where he lived for 14 years, returning to South Range in 1984. He married Miina Marttikainen in 1943. Miina died in 1978. Surviving are a brother, Tauno of Marquette, a sister, Gloria of South Range; three nieces and several cousins.

Lydia H. Hannela, 86, of Tamarack Hill, passed away on Feb. 18, 2000. She was born in fulton on October 11, 1913, a daughter of John and Hilma (Haippala) Lahti. She married Eino Haanela in 1934. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Elaine and Bob Lean of Bootjack; two grandchildren, Charles and Donna Lean of Hibbing, MN and Matt and Heidie Lean of Calumet; five great grandchildren; and a sister, Martha and Robert Raade of Trenton. Burial in the Lake View Cemetery.

Chester Davison, 83, of Ontonagon died on Feb. 18, 2000 at the Manor Care East Nursing Home in Green Bay, WI.

Arnold Oikkonen, 94, of South Range, died on Feb. 17th at the DJ Jacobetti Veterans Facility in Marquette.

Eino A. Bikkarainen, 86, of Traprock Valley, died on February 17, 2000. He was born in Fulton, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Pippo) Bikkarainen. He was self-employed for many years as a blacksmith, welder and sawed lumber and cut pulpwood. He later worked as a repairman and saw filer for the Seneca Sawmill. He is survived by several cousins.

Wallace F. Davis, 83, of Aura, died on February 15, 2000. He was born on May 11, 1916 in Winslow, IN, son of Emory and Mary (Sermershein) Davis. He was a Staff Sgt for the US Army during WWII. In 1947, he married Anna Krogh. He opened Range Finer Foods in South Range, which he sold a few years ago. Over the past four years, he and his wife have spent their winters in Sun City, AZ. He is survived by his wife; a son, John of Phoenix; five daughters, Dixie and Dann Cooper of Bloomington, IN, Lynn and Bill Neal of Orwell, OH, Christine of South Range, Mary and Mark Klepac of Chardon, OH, Ruth and Robert Maki of Peoria, AZ, 11 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Peter H. Simonen,85, of Hancock passed away on February 14, 2000. He was born in Mohawk July 19, 1914, a son of Peter and Emma (Soronen) Simonen. In 1946 he married Gertrude Jokela. He is survived by his wife; a niece, Helen and Tom Smith of Albuquerque, NM; a nephew, Dennis and Barbara Jokela of Anchorage, AK; niece, Sue and Mike Niemi of Hancock; nephew, Jess and Sharon Howton of Tuscaloosa, AL; grandnieces and nephews.

Mary M. Tinetti, 93, of Laurium, died on February 11, 2000. She was born August 2, 1906, in Laurium, a daughter of Louis and Rose Tenetti. She had worked at "Uncle Paul's" Grocery Store and later as office manager for Hamar Quandt Lumber Company. She is survived by a sister, Marjorie of Calumet; two brothers, Frank and Mary of Royal Oak, and Arthur and Adele of Flushing; and a sister in law, Barbara Tinettie of CA.

Russell W. Berryman, 94, of Calumet, died on Feb. 11, 2000. He was born July 28, 1905, in Calumet, a son of William and Bessie Berryman. He had been employed for over 50 years with the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, retiring in 1968. He married Irene Jolly in 1937. Russell is survived by his wife; two daughters, Shelby and Reuben Normand, of Lake Linden, and Darlene and David Jarvi of Calumet; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Clayton and Irving (Jean) both of Calumet; and a sister, Mildred Shephard, of Calumet.

Paul Peter Remali, 79, of Calumet, passed away at the Jacobetti Veterans Facility in Marquette where he had been a patient for the past month. He was born March 4, 1920, in Calumet, a son of Peter and Helmi Remali. Paul was a local commercial fisherman on Lake Superior. He also was a boat captain, operating a tug between Isle Royale and the mainland. HE married Katri Jacobson in 1947. He is survived by a daughter, Gail and Martin Voldarski, of Calumet; a grandson, Kevin and Bambie Voldarski of Germany; a great granddaughter, Krissie; a great grandson, Kasey; two brothers, Carl of Calumet and Ed of Ishpeming; two sisters, Judy and Bruce Curl, of IL, and Edith and George Hookana of Fisherman Road.

Rev. Fr. F. Joseph Canfield, 73, of Lake Linden, died on February 10, 2000. He was born on June 20, 1926, in Concordia, KS, a son of William H. and Angeline (Crosietiere) Canfield. From 1944 to 1946 he served in the United States Army with the 30th Infantry Division in Europe. Fr. Joe graduated from St. Norbert College, DePere, WI and was a graduate of St. Paul Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN. He was ordained to the Priesthood on May 31, 1958. Fr. Joe is survived by a sister, Mary Jean Canfield of Osceolo, WI and several cousins.

James J. Parolini, 47, of Onkalos Corner, died on February 9, 2000, at his home following a short illness. He was born on January 10, 1953, in Hancock, a son of James P. and Marguerite (Romano) Parolini. Jimmy Joe had been employed at Gundlach Champion, Inc and previously worked for Hocking Construction and Mattila Construction companies. He is survived by his mother; three sisters, Carole and Samuel Morello of Whitemore Lake, MI, Gina of Oconomowoc, WI, and Jo Anne of South Range.

Elinore Lawrence, 79, of Hancock died on Feb. 8, 2000.

Jack Bakkila, 61, of Chassell, died on Feb. 8, 2000.

Peter Laurence Boggio, 84, of Eagle Harbor, died on February 8, 2000. Born on April 2, 1915, in Rambaultown, he was the son of Dominic and Nota Boggio. He owned and operated Salotti Grocery Store in Laurium from 1938 to 1942. He later worked in Detroit returning to the area and was steward at the Miscowaubik Club until his retirement in 1980. He married Dorothy Bennetts in 1934. Peter is survived by his wife; a son, James and Anne of Eagle harbor; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Dominic and Jean of Calumet; a sister in law, Leona and Joseph Boggio of L'Anse and Calumet.

William Luoma, 92, of Hancock, died on February 7, 2000. He was born in Hancock on December 28, 1907, a son of John and Aliina (Ventela) Luoma. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army. Bill is survived by two sisters, Aina E. Luoma of Hancock, Martha and Hank Hakala of Hancock; and a brother, Edward Luoma of Houghton. Burial in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

G. Elden Harju, 72, of Aura, died on February 6, 2000. He was bron on July 31, 1927 in Pequaming, a son of George and Elna (Makela) Harju. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. He is survived by two aunts, Viola Urgo and Lila Rizzo of Chicago.

Ida Heikkila, 92, of Tapiola died on February 5, 2000. She was born on June 5, 1907, in Baltic, a daughter of John and Maria (Keisalla) Myllyla. In 1926 she married John Heikkila. He died in 1976. She is survived by two sons, Dennis and Lori of Tapiola, Delbert and Joanne of Taylor, MI; five daughters, Rosella and Buddy Page of Texarkana, TX, LaVerne and Andy Ducsay of Newberry, Virginia and Jack Hayes of Pittsburg, TX, Marlene Kamppainen of Milwaukee, WI, and Irene Taucher of Livonia; 38 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; a sister, Aune Myllyla of Covington Rest Home.

Louise Chopp, 89, of Toivola, died on February 4th. She was born on November 20, 1920, in Italy, and came to the US in 1919. Louis was employed as a Clerk in the Toivola Post Office for 15 years and also worked at the Donken Post Office. She married William Chopp in 1934. She is survived by her husband; two sons, William and Ruth of Painesdale, Frank and Diane of Port Washington, WI; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Mary Knezovich of Theinsville, WI.

Lowell E. Hebert, 67, of Baraga, died on February 3, 2000. He was born on July 26, 1932, in Baraga, a son of Thomas and Exilda (Auge) Hebert. He married Lola LaCosse in 1951. Lowell worked for Snowden Construction Co for 12 years, for Celotex, and for the Village of Baraga until retiring in 1976. He is survived by his wife, seven sons, Terry of Baraga, Steve and Sue of Channing, Rodger and Cathy of Baraga, Larry and Carol of Pelkie, Jerry of Keweenaw Bay, Pat of Baraga, Edward of Baraga; two daughters, LuAnne and Mike Hill of Baraga, Janean and Steve Brown of Jackson, WI; a brother, Charles and Gladys of South Range; 19 grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

Henry Hakasaari, 84, of Fulton, died on February 2, 2000. He was born March 22, 1915, a son of Fred and Hilma (Pelli) Hakasaari. He is survived by three sisters, Alma Grey of Bancroft, MI, Marian Hakasaari of Fulton, and Hilda and Eli Hyrkas of Centennial Location.

Charles Neault, 71, of Calumet, died on February 1, 2000. He was born on December 20, 1929, in Hubbell, a son of Ernest and Jennie Neault. He married Helen Makela in 1950. He is survived by his wife; a son, Terry; three daughters, Paulette and Robert Travis of Sedar Bay, Bonnie and Fran Poncho Prach of Milwaukee, toria and Richard Parkin of Ahmeek; six grandchildren; a great granddaughter; two brothers, Royce and Ann of South Range, Danny and Shirely of Detroit; four sisters, Eunice and Sterling Day of NV, Eleanor Wiitanen of Milwaukee, Rita Solomon of FL, and Donna and Larry Maijala of Houghton.

Ann Butkovich, 82, of Hurontown, died on January 31, 2000. She was born on March 8, 1917, in Tecumseh, MI. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert who died in 1983. Surviving are three daughters, Veronica and Gary Simmons of Ontonagon, Virginia and Don Bastian of Boston Location, Valerie and Michael Lind of Ontonagon; a son Albert and Delores of Hurontown; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Donald Pavolich of Mohawk, Anthony of ID, Louis of L'Anse, Joseph of Seattle, and John of Texas.

Albert Koskela, 85, of Florida Location, died on January 31, 2000. He was born April 26, 1914, in Florida Location, a son of Ida and Isaac Koskela. He was a veteran of WWII receiving a purple heart. Surviving are a son, Roaymond and Terri Koskela of Big Travese and two grandchildren.

Oscar S. Marttila, 85, of Iron Mountain and formerly of Houghton and Hancock, died on January 30th. He was born on April 16, 1914, in Calumet, a son of John and Alma (Saari) Marttila. He married Lillian Ylitalo in 1937. He is survived by his wife; a son, Thomas and Carrie Marttila of Iron Mountain; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; four sisters, Evelyn Hyttinen of Redridge, Evelyn Brooks of Livonia, Laila Evans of Henderson, NC, Hanna and Nicholas Lupan of St Ignace; four brothers, Joel of Liminga, Levi of Garden City, Raymond and Julianna of Portage, and Leo of Liminga.

Hubert A. Pepin, 70, of Escanaba, passed away on January 30th. He was born August 15, 1929, in Lake Linden, the son of Zoel and Parmelia (Codere) Pepin. He is survived by a sister, Mary Jane Pepin of Escanaba, two nieces, Brenda J. (Tracy) LaCount and Jackie M. Pepin of Escanaba.

John Agnich, 80, of Calumet, died on January 31, 2000. He was born on January 29, 1920, in Calumet, a son of John and Katherine (Rom) Agnich. He is survived by two sisters, Mary and Ann Agnich both of Calumet.

Mary Jane Popovich, 78, of Calumet, died on January 29th, in Rochester Hills. She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Popovich and a brother Nicholas Popovich.

Paul J. Kemppainen, 74, of Boston Location, died on January 29th. He was born on April 13, 1925 in L'Anse, a son of Charles and Helen kemppainen. Paul had worked for the City of Houghton as a fire truck driver. He was first married to Carole Hodge who died in 1973. He later married Violet Lindgren Tapani. He is survived by his wife Violet; a son, Greg of Boston Location; two step-sons, Rick and Pat Tapani of Negaunee, David and Debby Tapani of Palmer; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Shirley and Edward Hulkonen of Nisula; two brothers, Kenneth of Alston, and David and Dorothy of Chassell.

Elvie A. Arola, 90, of Calumet, died on January 29, 2000. She was born in Kearsarge on Dec. 29, 1909, a daughter of Isaac and Olga (Lahti) Petaja. She married George Arola in 1929. George died in 1978. Elvie is survived by three sons, Burton and Bernadine of Laurium, Ronald and Gloria of Santa Cruz, CA, Bud of Calumet; a daughter, Rebecca and Richard Furness of PawPaw, MI; a sister, Irene and George Pastore of Lexington, KY; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Charles E. Heikkinen, 82, of Iron Mountain, died on January 29, 2000. He was born March 4, 1917, in Toivola, a son of Charles and Emma (Rantanen) Heikkinen. He was a veteran of the US Army having served from 1939 to 1941. He married Sadie kallioinen in 1940. He is survived by his wife, a son, Charles and Sharon of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Char Hohol of Niagara, WI; a brother, Eino and Evelyn of Stockton, CA; three sisters, Emma Koistinen of Pioneer, AZ, Anna Laamanen of Ironwood, and Ina Kananen of South Range; three grandsons, Capt. Matt Heikkinen, Christopher, Heikkinen and Robert Heikkinen.

Sharon Drew Borgen, 50, died on Saturday, January 29, 2000, at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence. Sharon was born in Skanee, the daughter of Ohren and Alice (Carpenter) Drew. She was a resident of Warren for 15 years and was an administrator for the Edgemont and Edgelea Assisted Living Home in Warren. She is survived by her husband Christian and daughter Christie, both of Warren.

Patricia C. "Ty" Hunnell, 90, of Bootjack, died on January 27th. Patricia "Italia" was born on April 13, 1909, in Calumet, a daughter of John and Martina Ghiardi. She married Paul Hunnell in 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1965. She is survived by a son, Paul and Lois Hunnell of Naperville, IL and a nephew, William and Carol Tolone of Normal, IL. Burial in the Lake View Cemetery.

Leonard L. Jarvela, 87, of Hancock, passed away on January 27, 2000. He was born on May 8, 1912 in Toivola, son of Leonard and Sarafina (Kolehmainen) Jarvela. He married Tillie Luukkonen in 1953. She preceded him in death in 1990. He is survived by a son Ronald and Sharon Jarvela of Toivola, three daughters, Elaine and Ernest Jarvela of Toivola, Bernice and Charles Niemi of Toivola and Marlene and Rupert Vollrath of Canoga Park, CA; 14 grandchildren; 19 grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
