Rose M. Lowell Died Jan. 19, 1998 Rose M. Lowell, 81, of Hastings died Monday, Jan. 19, at her residence. She was born July 6, 1916, in Door County, Wis., the daughter of Henry and Nettie Paasch. She moved to Ludington as a small child. She attended elementary school in Riverton Township and graduated from Ludington High School in 1935. She was married to Lawrence F. Lowell May 1, 1937, and he survives. She was a substitute teacher in Genesee County for several years before moving to Mt. Pleasant. In 1985 she moved to Hastings, where she resided at the time of her death. Mrs. Lowell loved to travel. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Lawrence F. Lowell of Hastings, are one daughter, Marilyn (Richard) Bachelor of Hubbard Lake; three sons, Larry (Natalie) Lowell of Kentwood, Terry (Ellen) Lowell of Crystal Falls, and Ronald (Terry) Lowell of Plainwell; two sisters, Frances May of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Mildred Clapper of Ludington; one brother, Harry Laude of Ludington; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys McMasters of Baytown, Texas, and Sharon Laude of Manistee, and one brother, Francis E. Laude of Custer. A memorial service for Mrs. Lowell will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Hastings. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barry Community Hospice.

Richard Paul Peterson Died Feb. 4, 1998 Richard Paul Peterson, 73, of 410 N. Robert St., Ludington, died Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center following a brief illness. Services for Mr. Peterson are tentatively scheduled for Saturday morning at the Dorrell Funeral home, with visitation prior to the service. A complete obituary will be announced later by the funeral home.

Bernard James Wilson Died Feb. 11, 1998 Bernard James Wilson, 76, of Manistee died Wednesday, Feb. 11, at West Shore Hospital, Manistee. The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy E. Nielsen Died Feb. 19, 1998 Dorothy E. Nielsen, 77, of 702 St. Paul St., Ludington, died at her residence on Thursday. Dorothy Elizabeth Brant was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Ludington to John and Agnes (Rosplock) Brant. She lived her entire life in Ludington and graduated from Ludington High School. She was married May 30, 1941, to Samuel Nielsen, and he preceded her in death. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, always enjoying the time she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren. She had a love for nature and ceramics and was a great humanitarian, spending time helping others. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Sally) Taranko and Mrs. Stanley (Mary) Karnicki, both of Ludington; two grandchildren, John (and Amy) Taranko of Ludington and Mrs. Greg (Barbara) Shaw of Muskegon; one brother, George Brant of Ludington; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Samuel, she was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter, Loriann Karnicki, in 1975. Mass of Christian Burial from the Order of Christian Funerals for Mrs. Nielsen will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Simon Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ken Schichtel as celebrant. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will be at the Dorrell Funeral Home from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 this evening to receive friends. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 this evening. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association; envelopes are available at the funeral home.

William J. Cauchie Died Oct. 24, 1999 William J. Cauchie, age 89, of 301 E. Court St., Longfellow Towers, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 24 at Spectrum Health Care, Downtown Campus, Grand Rapids, following a brief illness William J. Cauchie was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Monroe County. He was married April 18, 1933, in Angola, Ind., to Marjorie Wilson who survives. The couple was married for 66 years. They lived in Pentwater and moved to Ludington in 1992. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Pere Marquette Lodge No. 299, Free and Accepted Masons. He had been employed at Ford Motor Company in Dundee for many years, and later the couple owned Temperance Food Locker and Market in Temperance, retiring in 1981. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Molly J. Cauchie of Pittsford, and Mrs. Debora White of Pentwater; two grandchildren, Chip (and Kerra) White of Midland, and Alice White of Pentwater; two great-grandchildren, Ben and Samantha White; two sisters, Catherine Covell of Holly, and Alice (and Richard) Burke of Leesburg, Fla.; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister, Marian Vance, and a son-in-law, Warren White. Memorial services for Mr. Cauchie will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Ludington with the Rev. Paul Lowley officiating. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice with envelopes available at the church and at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Doris Scanlon Died Jan. 9, 1999 Mrs. Doris Scanlon, age 65, went home to be with her Lord Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9. She was born July 28, 1933, in Muskegon to William G. and Evea (Hughes) Morse (who later resided in Fountain) and had been a lifetime resident of the area. Survivors include her husband, Robert Scanlon; three children, Roger (Gayle) Scanlon of Muskegon, Ronald (Dorene) Scanlon of Grand Haven, and Rochelle (Don) Westhof of Fruitport; seven grandchildren; one sister, Gay Christiansen of Ludington; one sister-in-law, Doralee Morse of Muskegon; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert J. “Rob” Scanlon on Oct. 15, 1988, and by her brother, James Morse. Services for Mrs. Scanlon will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the Fellowship Reformed Church, 4200 E. Apple Ave., Muskegon. Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Sytsema Funeral Home, 737 Apple Ave., Muskegon. Memorial gifts may be directed to the building fund of Fellowship Reformed Church.

Lorraine Couturier Died Jan. 24, 1999 Lorraine Couturier, age 65, of 6686 W. Decker Road, died unexpectedly at 2:30 a.m. Sunday at her home. Lorraine Lewis was born April 22, 1933, in Stiles, Wisc., and came to Ludington in 1957. She was married May 25, 1958, in Lake Leelanau to Gerald Couturier Sr. and he survives. She had been employed at Straits Steel & Wire Co. from 1978 to 1993, when she retired. She was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Daniel (Barbara) Higby of Ocean Spring, Miss.; three sons, Mark (and Kathy) Couturier of Ludington, Gerald (and Kelly) Couturier Jr. of Owatona, Minn., and William (and Lucinda) Couturier of Ludington; four grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Laura Couturier, of Lake Leelanau; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Couturier will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Simon Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Schichtel as celebrant. Burial will be in South Victory Cemetery. Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home. Ralph Ivan Penland Died Jan. 26,1999 Ralph Ivan Penland, age 63, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 26, at St. Paul’s Retirement Community, South Bend, Ind., where he had made his home since moving from New Buffalo in April. Mr. Penland was born Oct. 8, 1935, in Three Oaks, the son of Ralph L. and Violet (Anderson) Penland. He graduated from Ludington High School in 1954. He served his country in the United States Army during the peacekeeping mission in Korea. He was employed in the cost accounting department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Burns Harbor, Ind., before his retirement in 1996 after 28 years of service. Survivors include his sisters, Carol Christopher of Niles, Mary Ellen Colyer of Ludington, Doris Anthony of Benton Harbor and Norma Souers of Ludington; his brother, Roy Penland of Chandler, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews. Services for Mr. Penland will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Chikaming Township. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Charles C. Hulse Died Jan. 29, 1999 Charles C. Hulse, age 75, of 10778 N. U.S. 31, Free Soil, died Friday, Jan. 29, in Phoenix, Ariz., following a brief illness. Charles Clifford Hulse was born June 5, 1923, in Pawhuska, Okla. He attended school in the Stewartsville, Mo., area. He served his country in the United States Navy as a gunner’s mate 1-C on the USS San Francisco from 1940-1946. Defending his country at the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal, Charlie never saw himself as a “war hero,” and gave all the credit to those who gave their lives in the service of their country. He married Doris R. Hansel on Nov. 22, 1944, in Olathe, Kan. He worked for Century Boat Company of Manistee for 33 years, retiring in 1985. During retirement, the couple enjoyed spending their winters at their “second home” along the Colorado River near Parker, Ariz. He was a devoted family man, enjoying nothing more than spending time at family gatherings or showing pictures of his great-grandchildren to his friends at the park where he wintered. He was a life member of VFW Walsh Post No. 4499 of Manistee and a 45-year member of the Free Soil United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Doris, of Free Soil; two sons, Charles T. (and Alana) Hulse of Constantine, and Brian D. (and Sandy) Hulse of Bakersfield, Calif.; one daughter, Christine Hulse of Benzonia; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Raymond of Arma, Kan., Kenneth of Stockton, Calif., and Herbert of Hesperia, Calif.; five sisters, Geneva Black of Blue Springs, Mo., Eunice Tanner of Hardin, Mo., Dorothy Vaughn and Loretta Horn, both of Stockton, Calif., and Deborah Hulse of Lawson, Mo.; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Opal Hulse, two brothers, William and Darrell Hulse, and a sister, Ruby Fields. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Charles C. Hulse will be Feb. 20, at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee with the Rev. Russell Garrigus of Epworth United Methodist Church officiating. VFW military services will follow. The to receive friends.

Janet Rae Anes Died Feb. 16, 1999 Janet Rae Anes, age 69, of Comstock Park and formerly of Grant, died Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Spectrum Health-Downtown Campus, Grand Rapids. She was born Janet Rae Sapp in Newport, Ky., the daughter of Hazel Lee Sapp and Arthur Andrew Perkins on Dec. 28, 1938. She married Ralph Douglas Anes, formerly of Ludington, on March 5, 1956, in Myland, Ind. She was a homemaker all her life. Surviving are her husband, Ralph D. Anes, of Comstock Park; four daughters, Karen Chatman of Grand Rapids, Terri (and Robert) Melle of Newaygo, Shelley (and Dave) Gard of Grant, Cindy (and Tim) Randolph of Grant; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her stepfather, Lyle Olson of Ludington; three sisters, Joanne (and George) Phillips of Kentucky, Shirley (and Jim) Herbert of Indiana, and Hope (and Bob) Shaffer of Comstock Park; two brothers, Arthur (and Debbie) Perkins of Bailey, and Anthony (and Brenda) Tabor of Lowell; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Anes will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, from the McKinley Funeral Home, Grant Chapel, Grant, with Pastor Wesley Smith officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 this evening.

Juanita M. Boline Died Feb. 26, 1999 Juanita M. Boline, age 68, of 1027 Daisy Lane, died at 10:50 p.m. Friday at Memorial Medical Center following an illness of several months. Juanita M. Cocke was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, and came to Ludington from Ohio in 1992. She was married to Richard M. Boline and he preceded her in death Jan. 31, 1998. She had been employed at Mason County Fruit Packers for the past seven years, until last December when illness forced her retirement. She was a member of the Ludington Chapter No. 508, Women of the Moose, the 40 and 8 Chapter No. 768 of Temple, Mich. Surviving are one brother, Donald Cocke of Ludington; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and William Meloney of Ludington; nieces, nephews and cousins. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation or funeral services. Arrangements are by the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home.

Lavern “Red” T. Larsen Died March 1, 1999 Lavern T. Larsen, age 83, of 6774 W. Jagger Road, Ludington, died Monday, March 1, at Mercy Hospital, Muskegon. Lavern Thomas Larsen was born March 5, 1915, in Riverton Township, the son of Tom and Meta (Behr) Larsen. He graduated from Ludington High School with the class of 1933 and attended Mason County Normal, graduating in 1934. He then attended the University of Michigan for two years. He was married on Jan. 8, 1942, to Frances Michaud and she survives. The couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this past January. In August of 1942 he entered the armed forces and served with the United States Army in the European Theater. He returned home Dec. 22, 1945. Red was employed by Dow Chemical Company for 31 years, retiring as rail transportation supervisor in 1980. He was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church of Ludington, Lincoln Hills Golf Club, the Harold Snyder Post 30, Disabled American Veterans, and a life member of Ludington Lodge 736, BPOE. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards and working in his yard. In addition to his wife, Frances, he is survived by one brother, William Larsen of Dansville; one sister, Lorraine Lund of Ludington; three sons, Lavern T. (and Rhoda) Larsen of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Stephen W. (and Kathy) Larsen of St. Louis, Mich. and Michael (and Jody) Larsen of Canton; one daughter, Christine (and Mark) Barry of Saranac; seven grandchildren, Audra Larsen, Kelley Larsen, Rebecca Bradley, Eric Larsen, Kimberly Larsen, Robert Larsen, and Jill Larsen; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Alexandra, and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert, and one sister, Mila. Mass of Christian Burial from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated for Lavern Larsen at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Simon Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Schichtel, celebrant. John J. Findling Died March 1, 1999 John J. Findling, age 84, of 714 E. Filer St., died Monday evening, March 1, at Scottsdale, Ariz., following a short illness. John J. Findling was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Detroit, and came to Ludington as a child. He was married Aug. 2, 1935, to Hilda D. Nielsen and she survives. He began as an insurance agent and realtor and formed the Findling Central Insurance Agency and Realty until the business was sold to Magee Agency. He was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church, the Pere Marquette Council No. 1492 of the Knights of Columbus, the Ludington Elks Lodge No. 736, the Mason County Board of Realtors and Lincoln Hills Golf Club. He is survived, in addition to his wife, by four sons, Robert (and Sandra) Findling of San Diego, Calif.; Douglas (and Helen) Findling of Scottsdale, Ariz., John J. (and Barbara) Findling of Livonia, Jeffrey (and Juli) Findling of Plymouth; two daughters, Anne (and Richard) Lint of Jenison, and Mary (and Bernard) Tesnar of Grand Rapids; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ann (and Hoyt) Payment of Ludington, and Lucille (and Fred) Eichler of Ludington; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gordon Lee, one brother, William and his parents, William and Blanche Findling. A funeral Mass for Mr. Findling will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Simon Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Schichtel as celebrant. Burial will be at Pere Marquette Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. A wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. John Becker Died March 12, 1999 John Becker, age 83, of Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of Branch, passed away Friday, March 12, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Port Charlotte. John Becker was born June 18, 1915, in Branch, the son of Anthony and Mary (Svelnis) Becker. He grew up and attended County School in Branch. He moved to Detroit where he worked for Ford Motor Co. for several years, and later owned and operated Rite-Way Roofing Co., retiring in 1980. He was married Nov. 9, 1974, in the Detroit area to Florence E. Simpson and she preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1995. The couple moved to Mason County following John’s retirement in 1980. Surviving are two daughters, Lillian Senik of California, and Betty (and Dennis) Calkins of Talmoon, Minn.; one son, John (and Linda) Becker of Luther; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several neices and nephews. Memorial services for Mr. Becker are tentatively scheduled for 10 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the Stephens Funeral Home chapel, Scottville. Complete arrangements will be announced later by the funeral home.

Marion Kramer, age 91, of 6331 Cambridge Drive, Ludington and formerly of Florida, died Thursday, March 25 [1999], at Oakview Medical Care Facility. The Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Katherine Jarski, age 86, of Manistee, died Thursday afternoon, March 25 [1999] at West Shore Hospital in Manistee. The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of arrangements.

John Selby, age 69, of Fenton and formerly of Ludington, died Wednesday, March 17 [1999] in Fenton. The Dorrell Funeral Home of Ludington is in charge of arrangements.

Crescentai Wanderer, age 90, of 209 S. Washington Ave., died Wednesday evening, March 17 [1999] at her residence. The Alexander-Rye Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy J. Henke Died March 24, 1999 Roy J. Henke, age 85, of 713 Brother St., Ludington, died Wednesday, March 24 at Baywood Nursing Home following a brief illness. Roy J. Henke was born July 11, 1913, in Scottville, the son of William and Fannie (Pratton) Henke. He grew up in Ludington where he attended school, graduating from Ludington High School with the class of 1933. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army in the Pacific Theater. He was married Sept. 21, 1950, in Ludington to Marie Masse and she survives. He was employed by the Star Watch Case Co. of Ludington until his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed the out-of-doors and brought a smile to everyone he met. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his wife, Marie, survivors include one son, James (and Lisa) Henke of Ludington; one daughter, Janet (and Michael) Duncan of Roanoke, Va.; one grandson, Scott Henke of Ludington; one granddaughter, Katrina Henke of Grand Rapids; three step-grandchildren, Aleatha, Jeffrey and Kristin; one sister, Hazel Christie; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William Henke; his mother and stepfather, Fannie and Henry Kronlein; two brothers, Bert and George Henke; and two half-brothers, Fritz and Jack Kronlein. Mass of Christian Burial from the Order of Christian Funerals for Mr. Henke will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 27 at St. Simon Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Schichtel as celebrant. Rose K. Benson Died April 21, 1999 Rose K. Benson, age 95, of 201 E. Fitch St., Ludington, died peacefully at Memorial Medical Center Wednesday, April 21, following a brief illness. Rose Kupper was born June 19, 1903, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Homel) Kupper. She grew up and attended school in Ludington graduating from Ludington High School with the class of 1922. She then attended Hillsdale College in Michigan. She graduated from St. Simon’s as a music teacher and taught piano for several years. She first worked for Bosoms Manufacturing as an accountant and then worked for Mason County Probate Court for many years as a clerk. She was very active in her community and served as worthy matron of Pere Marquette Chapter, Order of Eastern Star No. 327 and its secretary for 45 years. She was also past president of the Manistee District Association of Stars and past president of the Past Matrons Club. She was past noble grand of the Rebekah Lodge No. 87, and past president of the Noble Grands Club. She was past president of District No. 30 of the Rebekahs and also past chaplain of the Rebekah Assembly of Michigan. She was past president and ritualistic instructor of the Ludington Emblem Club No. 383. Bridge, crocheting, knitting afghans and playing solitaire were some of the things she enjoyed doing. She leaves her beloved son Philip W. Benson and his wife, Libby of Rockford, and her beloved sister, Lil R. Hansen of Ludington, with whom she made her home for many years. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Laura Lee (and Timothy) Milliken of West Bloomfield, David (and Laurie) Benson of Grand Rapids, Martin Benson of Grand Rapids; eight great-grandchildren, Erin, Allison, Matthew and Sam Milliken, Mary Rose, Cyril, Taylor and Noah Benson; her nephews, Sherwood (and Julie) Kupper of Odessa, Texas, Gary Kupper of Incline, Nev., Douglas (and Vonise) Kupper of Tampa, Bruce Kupper of Chesapeake, Va., Steven S. (and Kathleen) Kupper of Temperance; nine grand-nephews; two grand-nieces. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ben, Lou and Saul; two sisters-in-law, Sophie “Button” Kupper and Mary Kupper, and one niece, Marcia Lou Sheftel. Memorial services for Rose K. Benson will be conducted at a later date and announced by the Dorrell Funeral Home. Edward E. Hawkins Died April 22, 1999 Edward E. Hawkins, age 83, of Mt. Vernon, Ill., died Thursday, April 22, at Barnes Jewish Hospital. He was born April 5, 1916, in Buffalo, Iowa, the son of Ernest Hawkins and Alice (Holden) Hawkins. He was married Jan. 12, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa, to Lucia Mae Wynes and she survives. He had served in the Maritime Service during World War II. He was vice president of Rowland & Company and was in the investment business for over 50 years. He was an allied member of the New York Stock Exchange. He was a lifetime member of Masonic Orders in Davenport, Iowa, including the Kaaba Shrine, Mohasson Grotto, Zarepath Consistory, Trinity Lodge No. 208. He was also a lifetime member of the Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge No. 819, and was chairman of Mt. Vernon Park Board from 1975 to 1998. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon, Ill. The couple summered in the Ludington area. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hawkins and Leona Hawkins, both of Davenport, Iowa; three nephews, John Hawkins Jr., Richard Hawkins and Robert Hawkins, all of Davenport, Iowa; and one niece, Nancy Sparks of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Hawkins Sr. and William Hawkins. A memorial service for Mr. Hawkins will be held in Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Ludington at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association and will be accepted at the Newell Funeral Home, 2707 North St., Mt. Vernon, Ill., 62864.
