FENNVILLE -- George William Hayes, 90, of Saugatuck, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in Holland Community Hospital. The son of William and Rose Hayes, he had been a farmer in the Fennville area most of his life, and was a former member of the I.O.O.F. Surviving are his sisters, Pauline Van Huis of East Saugatuck, and Velda Byrne of Grand Rapids; a sister-in-law, Harriet Hayes of Fennville; and five nieces. No visitation is planned. Family services will be at a later date. Burial of ashes will be in Fennville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by the Chappell Funeral Home.

Orville Wendell Millar, 87
SAUGATUCK -- Orville Wendell Millar, 87, of Holland, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, in a local nursing home. Born in Chicago, he was raised in Battle Creek, living most of his life in Douglas. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in World War II, and was employed by Baker furniture for 32 years, retiring in 1976. He was a past member of Dutcher Masonic Lodge No. 193 F & AM, June Chapter No. 343, Order of the Eastern Star Past Patron, GF.R. AASR Palestine Shrine No. 1 White Shrine of Jerusalem, Past Watchmen of the Shepherd, and was involved with Boy Scout Troop 18 of Douglas. He was a member of Douglas Congregational United Church of Christ and American Legion Post 149. Surviving are his wife, Marion; son, Gerald and Jane Millar of Kalamazoo; one grandson; sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Martin Kole of Holland, and Marge Millar of Caledonia; nieces, nephews and cousins. Services are 3 p.m. Monday at Douglas Congregational Church of Christ with the Rev. Al Mascia officiating. John J. Van Tatenhove, 82
John J. Van Tatenhove, 82, of Holland, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the Inn at Freedom Village. He resided in the area his entire life, graduating from Holland High School, attending Hope College and graduating from the Holland Business Institute. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in World War II, and owned and operated the Little Miss and Modern Hat Shop. He later joined his father operating the French Cloak Company. A member of Christ Memorial Church, he was a former member of First Reformed Church, serving on its consistory, was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, and was a former member of the Holland Lions Club and Downtown Merchants Association. Surviving are his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Mary and Bill Baker of Spring Lake, and Janice and Roy Aslanian of Portage; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, Ken and Geraldine Van Tatenhove of Holland, and Lester and Dani Van Tatenhove of Irving, Calif.; sister, Betty and Marlo Dannenbring of Oceana, Calif.; brother- and sister-in-law, Julia Van Tatenhove of Holland, and John Wassink of Adell, Wis.; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a former member of Hope Reformed Church in Grand Haven, and had owned and operated Hettinga Produce Market. Her husband, Albert, preceded her in death in 1977. Surviving are her children, Henry and Carol DeVecht of Grand Haven, Norman and Gayle DeVecht of Miami Beach, Fla., Donald and Jewell DeVecht of Grand Haven; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph and Ardean Hettinga of Grand Haven; and a niece. She also was preceded in death by a son, Lars Fiskars, in 1982, and by a daughter-in-law, Ella Fiskars in 1995. Prior to retirement he had been employed by Hamilton Farm Bureau and as a farmer. He was preceded in death by a son, Howard, in 1937; his first wife, Dora, in 1958; daughter, Darthea, in 1970; and second wife, Ida, in 1998. Born in Libby, Mont. she had been employed as a bookkeeper at the Fort Peck dam project on the Missouri River. She had been a volunteer tutor for the Seattle Public Schools. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Jerold; daughters, Ruth and Robert Shaw of Anchorage, Alaska, Mary and Robert Inkpen of Renton, Wash., and Beth and Dan Betker of Seattle; and two grandsons. SAUGATUCK -- Irene Ann Manchester, 83, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Saugatuck, died Friday, Sept. 10 1999. She received an associates degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. Her husband, Donald, preceded her in death in 1990. Surviving are her son, John and Tommy Manchester of Kalamazoo; and cousins. Visiting are services are 6 p.m. Saturday at the Manchester home in Saugatuck. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Saugatuck. George Flokstra, 79
George Flokstra, 79, of Zeeland, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1998, and his son-in-law, Tony Schering. He was a member of North Street Christian Reformed Church in Zeeland. Surviving are his children, Emma Schering, Miney and Cal Boetsma, George Jr., and Jan Flokstra, Lois and Ron Van Harn, and Sue and Dave Brown; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, Ralph and Jen Flokstra, Bern and Gloria Flokstra; sister- and brother-in-law, Fanesta Flokstra-Lubbers, and Casper Eisen; nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the VanderLaan Funeral Home, 4917 32nd Ave., Hudsonville. Burial will be in Beaverdam Cemetery. Visiting is 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Elsie De Vries, 79
Elsie De Vries, 79, of Zeeland, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at her home. She was born in Holland Township. She and her husband were house parents at My Brothers House in Holland. She was a charter member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church and was involved with the Ladies Aid Society. She volunteered for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee in Mississippi and other states over the past 20 years and Bibles for Mexico. Her son, Robert De Vries, preceded her in death in 1995. Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Gordon; children, Mrs. Robert (Carol) De Vries of Holland, Joan and Harold Overweg of Holland, Col. James and Mary De Vries of Austin, Texas, Lenora and Jack Bell of Drenthe, David and Diana De Vries of Hudsonville, and Sally and Mark Van Ess of Hudsonville; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Marion and Bernard Bosma of Holland, Clarence and Jeanette Renkema of Holland, Jane and Ken Knoll of Zeeland, Marvin and Helen Renkema of Decator, Ind., and Theodore and Arlene Renkema of Shelby; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Harris De Witt and Alma Tubergen, both of Zeeland, and Clarence Waterway and Minard De Vries, both of Holland; nephews, nieces and cousins. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church with the Revs. John Meyer, Herman Ridder and Mark Van Ess officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Visiting will be 7-9 p.m. today at the Northwood Chapel, Dykstra Funeral Homes, 295 Douglas Ave. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Holland or Bibles from Mexico.

Vilemena Adler, 87
HAMILTON -- Mrs. Vilemena "Greta" Adler, 87, of Hamilton, formerly of Benton Harbor, died Friday, July 30, 1999, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Lawrence M. Adler in 1973. She worked in her husband's optometry practice in Benton Harbor. She is survived by her son, Larry and Gayle Adler of Hamilton; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Holland.
