David L. Herkel, age 58 of Flint, formerly of Holly died Mon. Feb. 19, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thurs. Feb. 22, 2007 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly. Visitation will be from 11 AM until the time of the service on Thursday. Mr. Herkel was born in Midland on Feb. 5, 1949 the son of Calvin and Thelma (Bauder) Herkel. He is survived by his wife Marion; children, Rex Herkel of Flint, Kellie Herkel of Midland, Bobbie Herkel of Flint, Christina (Eric) Thomason of Warren, and Kenneth (Kayla) Herkel of Midland; 3 sisters, Donna Detzler of Beaverton, Debra (George) Ifrate of Coleman, and Gean (Ed) Waldforgel of Beaverton; 10 grandchildren and a baby girl on the way; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; close friends Beaufort Deese, Amy Oldaugh Seeley, Dave Seeley, Jillybean, and Scott Titherage. He was preceded in death by 2 children, Misty Lee and James Herkel; parents Calvin and Thelma Herkel, and brother-in-law Robert J. Albert Jr.
Naomi A. White, age 92 of Holly, formerly of Pontiac, died Tues. Feb. 6, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, Feb. 9, 2007 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly with Pastor W.J. Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Perry Mount Park Cemetery, Pontiac. Visitation will be from 4-9 P.M. Thursday. Mrs. White was born in Pontiac on April 11, 1914 the daughter of Walter and Florence Beauregard. She was retired from St. Joseph Hospital of Pontiac. Surviving are her daughter Karen (Willard) Irish of Holly; 2 step-daughters Laurene Caswell of Clarkston and Nelda (Joseph) Sutherland of Waterford; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; sister Ruth, and sister Maxine Reynolds of Keego Harbor. She was preceded in death by her husband Alwin Nelson White. Memorials may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church of Ortonville.
Geraldine M. (Peg) Welton, age 83 of Holly died Mon. Jan. 29, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thurs. Feb. 1, 2007 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly with Pastor Jim Disbrow officiating. Burial will be in White Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 P.M. Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs. Welton was born in Ann Arbor on Aug. 29, 1923 the daughter of Arthur and Dorothy (Bodkin) Lucas. She was retired from the Holly Schools. Surviving are 6 children, Shelia Mavis of Holly, Shirley Schillinger of Holly, Sharon (Don) Maine, and Shannon (Jim) Guernsey of Rogers City; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and brother Don Lucas of Holly. She was preceded in death by her husbands William Henry Lourdon and Eri Welton Sr; and by brothers Verne, Art, Steve, and Carl and sisters Dorothy and Mildred. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc. or the American Cancer Society.
Barbara V. Smith, age 79 of Holly died Sun. Dec. 31, 2006 at home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wed. Jan. 3, 2007 at Calvary United Methodist Church of Holly with Pastor M. Jean Love officiating. Visitation will be from 6-9 P.M. Tues. at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly and from 9- 10 A.M. Wed at the church. Mrs. Smith was born in Clawson on Sept. 8, 1927 the daughter of James and Vera (Ware) Elliott. She was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She will be greatly missed by her husband K. Harry Smith; 6 children, Ken (Marcia) Smith of Waterford, Steve (Sharon) Smith of Waterford, Bob Smith of Holly, Brad (Beth) Smith of Holly, Jeff (Michelle) Smith of Holly, and Barb Smith of Derby, KS; 12 grandchildren, Melissa, Melanie, Kelly, Steve, Mike, Kerri, Sarah, Megan, Molly, Chelsea, Abbey, and Valerie; 4 great-grandchildren; Jack, Sam, Megan, and Zoe; and 2 brothers James Elliott of Sun City Center, FL and Robert Elliott of Davison. The family gives special thanks to care giver Beth Brancheau of Davison, Genesys Hospice RN Cathy Carr, nurse assistant Mary, and the rest of the respite volunteers. Carole Joy Walters, age 71 of Summerfield, FL, formerly of Davisburg died Dec. 24, 2006 at home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. Sat. Dec. 30, 2006 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly with Pastor Chuck Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Davisburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 P.M. Friday. Memorials may be made to the Davisburg United Methodist Church or the local hospice of your choice. Carole was born in Pontiac on April 18, 1935 the daughter of Robert and Joy Danley. She married Cal Walters on Nov. 8, 1958. She is the mother of 4 children, Cindy J. (Greg) Schoenfeld of Vandalia, MI, Robert C. Walters of CA, Calvin J. (Jean) Walters of Gilbertsville, PA, and Thomas E. (Connie) Walters of Marietta, GA; the caring and loving grandmother of 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; and dear sister of Roberta Mann of Clarkston, Frances Wenigar of FL, Roy Danley, and Richard Danley of FL. Carole and Cal were longtime members of the Davisburg United Methodist Church during their 57 years as residents of Davisburg. She retired from Bank One in 1992 before moving to Florida, getting a hole in one and also received several trophies. Besides golf, she enjoyed spending time with her family, volunteering at her church, baking and reading. She fought a courageous battle against cancer and came out on God's side, providing her loved ones with the ultimate demonstration of her faith as she fearlessly embraced her passing.
Earl F. Grandon Jr., age 82 of Holly died Sat. Dec. 23, 2006 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Fri. Dec. 29, 2006 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly with Pastor Ed Pedley officiating. Burial and military honors will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be from 4-9 P.M. Thurs. Mr. Grandon was born in Parkersburg, WV on Sept. 24, 1924 the son of Earl and Gladys (Starkey) Grandon.He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corp Medical Corp. He was awarded the Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, W/2 Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation RibbonW/1 Bronze Battle Star, 2 Overseas Service Bars, and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked as a meat cutter at the Freeman's and IGA Groceries in Holly and then retired from GM after 30 years of service. He was currently employed as a car driver for Randy Wise of Fenton. He loved to work outdoors in his yard, square dance and travel to OH, Charles "Craig" Warner of TN, SPC Jason (Hillary) Hanson with the US Army in Iraq, and Casey Warner of Swartz Creek; 5 great-grandchildren, Avery and Nicholas Lehtomaa, David and Natalie Warner, and Vance Thor Hanson; sister-in-law Jo Ann Sura of Holly. He was preceded in death by his son Karl Randolph Warner, first wife Beatrice, and brothers Albert, James, and Karrol Warner. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
RICHARD (RICK) WAYNE LAUINGER, age 47, of Holly passed away on Monday, Dec 4, 2006 at the Genesys Health Park in Grand Blanc after a two-year struggle with cancer. Surviving are his wife of 18 years Beverly (Smith) and children Christopher, Quinn and Jonathan. Also surviving are brothers Michael, Randy (Barb), Steven (Julie), and Ronald (YangSong) as well as 9 nieces and nephews. Rick and his family moved from his hometown of Waterford to the village of Holly 14 years ago. Rick was down to earth and his laughter and good humor will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He also possessed an entrepreneurial spirit and was rich in personality and dreams. In 1999 Rick pursued and accomplished one of his dreams by founding the Holly Community Voice newspaper in Holly. For five years, Rick poured his heart into "the news" by informing and highlighting residents in the community. Rick was a member of St. Rita Church in Holly and was also involved in the Boy Scouts of America. A viewing and prayer service will be held at Dryers Funeral Home, 101 First Street in Holly on Friday Dec. 8 from 3-5 and 7-9 P.M. A memorial service will take place at St. Rita Catholic Church, 309 East Maple Street in Holly at 11:00 A.M. Saturday December 9. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Rick Lauinger fund at The State Bank.
DONALD T. ERPELDING , age 91, died Sat. Dec. 3, 2006. Funeral Mass will be held Thurs. Dec. 7, 2006, 10:00 A.M. at St. Rita Catholic Church, Holly with Father David Blazek officiating. Burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be from 2-9 P.M. Tues. and Wed. and a Rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Wed. at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly. Mr. Erpelding was born in Detroit on Sept. 10, 1915 the son of Herman and Anna (Wencel) Erpelding. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. Mr. Erpelding was retired from the State of Michigan. Surviving are 3 children Jane Poniatowski of Northpoint, John Erpelding of KY and Bob Erpelding of Metamora; 10 grandchildren: 5 great-grandchildren and sister Gertrude Dingeman of Redford. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, granddaughter Amber Erpelding, brother Rev. Father Martin Erpelding and sister Alice Erpelding. Memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veteran's.
