Sarah Ann Van Velsen (1803-1882)

"Obituary of Sarah Ann Van Velson." The Kingston Daily Freeman, 16 Jul. 1930

On July 16, 1882, the death took place of Sarah Ann Van Velson, widow of the Rev. Jacob Winchell, at the family residence on the farm now known as the Story place, near Tyce-Tenyck mountain. Mrs. Winchell was born in 1803, a daughter of Elder Jonathan Van Velson, who was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Olive in 1816-19. She and Mr. Winchell were married July 24, 1819.

Ada Maude Whitenight
The Morning Press, Bloomsburg, PA - Oct. 22, 1966

Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Maude Whitenight, eighty-two, East Eighth street, Berwick will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the Zion United Church of Christ, Forks, with the Rev. Clinton M. Baver, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Whitenight died Thursday evening in the Berwick Hospital where she had been a patient since July 26. Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

Genevieve E. Whitenight
The Morning Press, Bloomsburg, PA - February 9, 1973

Mrs. Genevieve E. Whitenight, 56, Millville R. D. 2, died at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bloomsburg Hospital where she had been a patient for six days. She had been ill at her home for a week prior to admission to the hospital. Born in Madison twp., she was a daughter of the late Grant N. and Gertrude Lemons Lyons. She resided in her present home in Mount Pleasant twp. for the past six years and prior to that lived in Madison twp. and Bloomsburg R. D. 1. She was last employed at the Emenee Mfg. Co., Catawissa, for 11 years until retiring two years ago, and before that, at Milco Industries for nine years. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn. She and her husband, Bruce M. Whitenight, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last Aug. 24. Surviving in addition to her husband are four children, Franklin M. Whitenight, Millville R. D. 2; Bruce E. Whitenight, Bloomsburg R. D. 4; Barbara E., wife of Frank E. Fenstermaker, Millville R. D. 1, and Robert E. Whitenight, at home; six grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., from the Dean W. Kriner Funeral Home, 246 W. Main St., Bloomsburg, with Rev. Ronald R. Mulberger, student intern pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn, officiating. Burial will be in New Columbia cemetery.

Gomer T. Whitenight
The Morning Press, Bloomsburg - February 6, 1975

Gomer T. Whitenight, 85, of 121 Briar Cliff Rd., Park Place Village, Berwick, died at his home early Wednesday morning. He had been in apparent good health until being stricken. Mr. Whitenight, son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Gilbert Whitenight, was born at Zaners, Fishingcreek Township, April 11, 1889. He spent the greater part of his life in Berwick. He retired in 1957 after completing more than 40 years of service as a pipefitter in the freight car department of ACF Industries, Inc., Berwick. Mr. Whitenight was a member of Berwick Christian Church and the Men's Bible Class of the church, Berwick Grange, Golden Age Club and Berwick Senior Citizens Club. He was also a social member of Berwick Moose Lodge. He was preceeded in death by his wife, the former Beulah Hess, of Fairmount Springs, who died in December, 1959, and he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Among those surviving are a son, Roger A. Whitenight, with whom he resided; a daughter, Mrs. Rodney (Margaret) Eyer, of Manchester, PA; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral wil be held Friday afternoon at 2 from the James L. Kinckley, Jr., Funeral Home, Berwick, with his pastor, the Rev. William F. Tucker, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut St., Berwick.

G. Raymond Whitenight
Press-Enterprise, Bloomsburg - August 13, 1994

G. Raymond Whitenight, 74, of 400 Papermill Road, Bloomsburg, died Friday, Aug. 12, 1994, at his home. Born in Bloomsburg, he was the son of the late W. Earl and Lillian Manning Whitenight. He was a 1937 graduate of Scott High School and a lifelong resident of Bloomsburg. A farmer at Whitenight Farms for many years, he retired in 1961. He was also the owner of E & R Sand and Gravel Co. until 1968. He was a member of Hidlay Lutheran Church and one of the original directors of the Soil Conservation Association in Columbia County. He served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II. A daughter, Nancy Gail Whitenight, died in November 1953. Surviving is his wife, the former Mary A. McKenzie, with whom he celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on Feb. 25. Also surviving are a son, Terry B. Whitenight, Cheyenne, Wyo., and a daughter, Linda Whitenight-Hummel, Hummelstown. Arrangements will be announced by the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home, 325 Market St, Bloomsburg.

Lewis A. Whitenight
The Morning Press, Bloomsburg - October 22, 1973

Lewis A. Whitenight, 81, Lightstreet road, Bloomsburg, died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday in BLoomsburg, Hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks, following an illnes of two and one-half years. Born in Montour township, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Whitenight. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, Washington Blue Lodge, F & AM, Caldwell Consistory and Uniontown Automotive Council. He was an engineer for the Ford Motor Company for 35 years, then owned and operated a Lincoln-Mercury agency in Uniontown for twelve years prior to his retirement. He is survived by his wife Jennie E. (Shuman) Whitenight, to whom he had been married for 55 years; one brother, George Whitenight, Nanticoke; two nephews and one niece. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at eleven from the William S. Elwell funeral home, Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Dr. Frank W. Ake officiating. Burial will be made in New Rosemont cemetery, Espy.

Leroy W. Whitenight
Press-Enterprise, Bloomsburg - June 15, 1993

Leroy W. Whitenight, 73, of 64 Buckhorn Road, Bloomsburg, died at 1 a.m. Monday at his home. Born in Hemlock Township, he was the son of the late Charles and Mertie Wise Whitenight. He spent most of his life in the Buckhorn area. Mr. Whitenight ws employed as a custodian at the Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech School for 10 years, retiring in 1981. He previously worked for the state Department of Transportation and Milco Industries, both of Bloomsburg, and Dent Plumbing and Heating, Lightstreet. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn. Mr. Whitenight was also a member of the Buckhorn Fire Co. His first wife, the former Edna Betz, died Feb. 13, 1978. A son, Donald L. Whitenight, died March 5, 1974. Surviving are his wife, the former Pauline Mausteller, with whom he celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on Feb. 24; a son, Ronald L. Whitenight, Bloomsburg; a daughter, Mrs. John (Susan K.) Bellum, Bloomsburg, R.R.3; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Greenly, Millville; a stepson, Edward E. Beagle, Bloomsburg; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters; Margaret Karnes, Millville; Nola Martz and Irene Kennedy, both of Bloomsburg. Funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with his pastor, the Rev. Thomas E. Light Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Hill Cemetery.

Harry T. Whitenight
Press-Enterprise, Bloomsburg - October 14, 1992

Harry T. Whitenight, 77, Millville R.R.2, died Monday at 8:30 p.m. in the Bloomsburg Hospital Emergency Room. Born December 16, 1914, in Bloomsburg, he was the son of the late Roy and Edna Laubach Whitenight. He served overseas in the U.S Army during World War II. He had attended the former Wedgetown Schools, near Buckhorn. Mr. Whitenight spent the early part of his life in Bloomsburg. He lived the last 52 years in Iola. He was a weaver for the Magee Carpet Co., retiring in 1977 after 25 years with the company. He is survived by his wife, Lois Allen Whitenight, whom he married on June 24, 1940; a son, Henry Whitenight, Espy; a daughter, Mrs. John (Carolyn) Trump, Bloomsburg R.R.5, three brothers: Donald, Nuremburg; Paul, Bloomsburg, Fred, Catawissa; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. from teh Poust-Bunnell Funeral Home, Main Street, Millville, with the Rev. James Bramer of St. Paul's Luther Church, Millville, officiating. Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park.

Bruce Whitenight
Press-Enterprise, Bloomsburg - March 19, 1990

Bruce Whitenight, 83 Orangeville, R.D.1, died at 1:22 a.m. Saturday at the Bloomsburg Hospital, where he was a patient for 10 days. He had been in failing health since October. Born in Fishingcreek Township, he was the sone of the late Robert E. and Mary Lockard Whitenight. He resided in Fishingcreek Township most of his life, except for several years when he lived in Benton. A lifelong farmer, he was also employed at the American Car and Foundry Co., Berwick, for about 20 years and for the Pa. Department of Highways. He was last employed at Orangeville Manufacturing Co., where he worked for 10 years, retiring in 1978. He was also caretaker of the Zion Cemetery, near Forks, for many years. He and his wife, the former Grace C. Ash, celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 2, 1989. Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons: Hobart D. Whitenight, Benton R.D.2; Ted B. Whitenight, Benton R.D.1; R. Blair Whitenight, Hummelstown and Dane L. Whitenight, at home; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Helen Dodson, Benton and Mabel Grimes, West Palm Beach, Fla. Funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Dean Kriner Inc. Funeral Home, Benton, with the Rev. Howard W. West, pastor of the Benton Untied Methodist Church, officiating. ;Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery.

Bruce Whitenight
Press-Enterprise, Bloomsburg - July 28, 1986

Bruce Whitenight, 89, Nescopeck R.D.2, died Saturday at 7:35 a.m. in the Bloomsburg Health Care Center, where he was a patient for one day. Born in Berwick, he was the son of the late Harry and Emma Beagle Whitenight. He lived in Mifflin Township for 18 years and formerly operated a farm at Bloomsburg R.D.3. Mr. Whitenight attended Emmanuel Reformed Church of Mainville. His wife, the former Eunice C. Barber, died July 19, 1978, and a daughter, Mary Mowery, died June 14, 1965. Surviving are 11 children, Pearl Baker, Berwick; LeRoy Whitenight, Nescopeck R.D.2; Mrs. Albert (Hazel) Luzusky, South Windsor, Conn.; Fred M., Bloomsburg; Mrs. Ralph (Grace) Fried, East Hartford, Conn.; Mrs. Wilbur (Jean) Grozier, Berwick; Eugene, Bloomsburg, R.D.3; Carl J., Berwick R.D.3; Doyle, Nescopeck R.D.2; Glen, Nescopeck R.D.3 and Clark, Berwick R.D.3; 31 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Sadie Whitenight, Bloomsburg; and Ruth Boorse of Souderton. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Kriner-Elwell-Wilt Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Donald R. Bashore, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge.

Clayton R. Whitenight
Hazleton, PA Standard-Speaker of January 24, 1987

Clayton R. Whitenight, Hazleton, died Friday at 8:58 am at the Hazleton St. Joseph Medical Center, following a prolonged illness. Born in Nescopeck, he was a son of the late Clark and Katherine (McAfee) Whitenight. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He was a member of the Christ Memorial Church, West Hazleton. Preceding him in death were his wife, the former Betty Hoffman; a son, Perry D., a brother, Howard, and a sister Mrs. Iva Lorah. Surviving are three children, Dale R., Hazleton; James L., Hazleton; Mrs. Donna Benko, Hazleton; six grandchildren; four brothers, Ralph, West Hazleton; Raymond, Hazleton; Leo, Hazleton; Paul, Manville, NJ, and several nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 am from the Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc., Second Street entrance, with the Rev. Arthur W. Roberts, officiating. Interment will be in the Mountain Grove Cemetery.
