DOROTHY M. ANDERSON
DOROTHY M. ANDERSON, 83, Sturgeon Lake was a patient at Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake at the time of her death on Sunday, August 15, 1999.
Funeral services for Dorothy M. Anderson were held on Thursday, August 19, 1999 at 11 a.m. in Moose Lake United Methodist Church. Reverend Lee Kantonen officiated. Lee Mogen was the organist and Mary Beth Telker was the soloist. Casket Bearers were; Randy Bergstedt, Kevin Bergstedt, Ross Anderson, Darryll Gilbert, Wayne Anderson, and John Gilbert. Burial was held at Blomskog Cemetery, Windemere Twp.
Dorothy May Anderson was born on May 10, 1916 in Scobey, Montana to Roy and Fannie (Thompson) Gilbert. At the age of four, Dorothy moved with her family to the Sturgeon Lake area where she grew up and attended school. Dorothy attended her last year of high school in Albert Lea where she graduated and later moved back to the Sturgeon Lake area. On November 16, 1937; Dorothy married Lee Donald Anderson in Moose Lake. Dorothy worked at the Sturgeon Lake Bank for over 33 years retiring in 1966. She was a member of Moose Lake United Methodist Church. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, fishing, handwork, and reading.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee in 1982; two sisters; four brothers and her parents.
Survivors include a daughter: Marcia (Harold) Bergstedt of Sturgeon Lake; four sisters; Avis Denny of Sturgeon Lake; Gladys Anderson of Fergus Falls; Ruth Jacobson of Rutledge; and Shirley Nyquist of Carlton; two grandchildren: Randy (Cathy) Bergstedt of Roseville and Kevin (Julie) Bergstedt of Oakdale; 2 great grandchildren: Briana and Andrew; and 2 step great grandchildren: Daniel and Jeremy.

EDITH BORGHILD HOFFMAN
EDITH BORGHILD HOFFMAN, 91, was a resident of the Mercy Health Care Center, in Moose Lake at the time of her death on Sunday, August 15, 1999. Services for Edith Borghild Hoffman will be held on Friday, August 20, 1999, in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kettle River. Pastor Lyle Nielsen will officiate. Music will be provided by Helen Holm. Casket Bearers are: Christopher Hoffman, Vincent Hoffman, Anthony Hoffman, Forrest Hoffman, Delane Hoffman, Gregory Larson, Craig Hoffman, Eric Knuth, Lee Hoffman, Jay Hoffman, Mark Larson, Steve Larson, Keith Larson, Reese Hoffman. Burial to follow at a later date at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Minot, ND.
Edith was born on April 26, 1908, to Lars and Ingrid (Warn) Larson, in Ryder, ND. She grew up and attended school in Ryder, ND. On December 23, 1931, Edith married Sylvester Thomas Hoffman, in Minot, ND. She and Sylvester went on to raise a family. They lived in Kief, ND for many years before moving to Moose Lake in 1983. Edith was a homemaker, avid gardener and a wonderful gourmet cook. She was a member of the Scandia Lutheran Church, and of the Ladies Guild there, before moving and becoming a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River. Edith was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor, and friend.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents: Lars and Ingrid Larson; 1 sister Ella Saylor; 5 brothers: Lars, Henry, George, Walter, and Leon; 1 daughter Elaine Faith Hoffman at birth; 1 son Vincent Delano Hoffman; and her dear husband Sylvester Thomas Hoffman.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Vivian (La Verne) Larson of Kettle River, Kathleen (Dwight) Knuth of International Falls; 4 sons: Lawrence (Dawn) Hoffman of Polson, MT, Roger (Arlene) Hoffman of Billings, MT, Michael (Pamela) Hoffman of Bismarck, ND; Lynne (Ellen) Hoffman of Park City, MT and Constance Hoffman (widow of Vincent Hoffman); 2 sisters: Evelyn (Ervin) Kolden of Garrison, ND, Mildred (Beaman) Heath of Seattle, WA; 1 brother: Ralph (Viola) Larson of Ryder, ND; 23 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 18 great great grandchildren.
She will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched. Blest be her memory.

VICTORIA BARRY
VICTORIA BARRY, 94, Gatesville, Texas, formerly of Willow River, died on Friday, February 11, 2000 in Coryell Memorial Hospital, Gatesville, Texas.
Private Graveside services were held on Friday, February 18, 2000 in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Willow River.
Victoria Veronica Barry was born on October 8, 1905 in Hibbing, Minnesota to Joseph and Sophie (Zigmund) Jaglowski. She was a nurse in the healthcare industry for many years. Victoria lived in Gatesville, Texas for many years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Dwyer; and her second husband, Jack Barry.
She is survived by a brother, Joseph Jaglowski of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

PETER C. ZABASKE
PETER C. ZABASKE, 93, of Willow River, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 26, 2000 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Willow River. Father Norm Pahl was the celebrant. Joy Novak provided the music. Casket Bearers were Douglas Zabaske, Richard Zabaske, Robert Zabaske, Darrin Zabaske, Steve Herzog, and Wyatt Lund. Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Willow River.
He was born on April 29, 1906 to Walenti and Mary (Tatar) Zabaske in Birch Creek Township, Pine County. He grew up and attended school in Birch Creek Township where he farmed with his family. On September 23, 1935, Peter married Agnes Misukanis in St. Isadore’s Catholic Church, Sturgeon Lake. They farmed in Birch Creek Township until moving to Willow River in 1963. Peter worked at the Moose Lake State Hospital where he was also a foster grandparent. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart. Peter loved to fish. He had lived at Mercy Health Care Center since April 1998.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law; Josie Zabaske; several brothers and sisters; and his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Agnes; son; Chester Zabaske of Coon Rapids; daughter; Sue (Lloyd) Herzog of Wyoming; sister; Francis Neiman of Sandstone; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

WILLARD LLOYD BOOKER
WILLARD LLOYD BOOKER, 69, of Sturgeon Lake, died on Monday, February 21, 2000 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake.
Services were held on Friday, February 25, 2000 at 11 a.m. in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. Reverend Todd Van Zee officiated. Music was provided by Lee Mogen and Ronald Grandahl. Casket Bearers were Richard Umber, Alvin Warpula, Roger Grandahl, Travis Booker, Jim Mehle, and George Komar. Burial was held at Sturgeon Lake City Cemetery, Sturgeon Lake.
He was born on November 1, 1930 to George and Ruth (Gerow) Booker in Duluth, MN. He lived in the Duluth area until 1946 when he moved to Sturgeon Lake. Willard drove a creamery truck in the Sturgeon Lake area and worked at the Duluth Steel Plant. After being a Marine Veteran during the Korean Conflict, he continued to work at the Steel Plant. Willard married Doris Grandahl on June 18, 1955. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for Nels Nelson Construction for 13 years, retiring in 1992. Willard also farmed. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Willard enjoyed traveling and playing cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Delores Lindholm and Jackie Willie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Doris; sons: Jeff (Lorie) Booker of Sturgeon Lake, Todd (Kristin) Booker of Sturgeon Lake, Joseph (Kimberly) Booker of Moose Lake; daughters: Gwen (Rick) Steffen of Moose Lake, Sherry Mehle of Barnum; mother: Eva Marie Booker of Rutledge; brothers: Jim (Elaine) Booker of Sturgeon Lake, George (Helen) Booker of Salt Lake City, John (Sandy) Booker of Rutledge, Robert (Merc) Booker of Rutledge, Kenneth (Pat) Booker of New Ulm; sisters: Betty (Gene) Pekofske of Elgin, IL, Dorothy (Lyle) Howard of Duluth, Ruth (Tony) Prusin of Hinckley, Pat (Willie) Neson of Finlayson, Joyce (Earl) Warpula of Babbit, Barb (Bob) Calhoun of Barnum, Linda (Larry) Schleret of Mahtowa, Vickie (Ron) Oetterer of Finlayson, Ginger (LeRoy) Price of Rutledge; 8 grandchildren: Melissa, Michelle, Tabatha, Natalie, Tanya, Travis, Jessica and Ashley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

MARVIN R. BLOOM
MARVIN R. BLOOM, 61, of Kerrick, died on Thursday, February 24, 2000 in Mercy Hospital, Moose Lake. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 28, 2000 at 11 AM in Oak Lake Lutheran Church, Kerrick Twp. Nathan Anderson officiated. Marilyn Edin was the organist. Casket Bearers were: John Victor Bloom, Richard Bloom, Harry Bloom, Loren Bloom, Lyle Bloom, and Bruce Bloom. Burial was held in Oak Lake Community Cemetery, Kerrick Twp. Full Military Honors were provided by the Herbert-Kennedy VFW Post #3979 and Carl Anderson American Legion Post #262 of Cloquet. Marvin Rudolph Bloom was born on July 24, 1938 in Nickerson Twp. to Rudolph and Anna (Schubert) Bloom. He grew up in the Nickerson area and attended school in Duquette. In 1955, Marvin entered the United States Army. During his Army career of 28 years, Marvin attained the ranking of Master Sargeant. He was part of the Airborne Special Forces that was responsible for two combat tours in Vietnam. Marvin also taught Military Science and was the ROTC officer at Clemson University. He retired from the Army in 1983. In 1994, Marvin moved back to Nickerson. He was a member of the Pedersen-Maunula American Legion Post #379 of Moose Lake, NRA, and the Masonic Lodge. Marvin was also a member of Oak Lake Community Cemetery Board where he served as president and was instrumental in getting a flag and bench installed in the cemetery. He was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph Bloom; and two brothers: Ralph Bloom and Ray Bloom. Survivors include a son: John Victor Bloom of Franklin, Tennessee; a daughter: Elizabeth Dawn Casteel of Nolensville, Tennessee; mother: Anna Bloom of Nickerson; three step-sons: Jennings Maxey of Florida, John Maxey of Chippewa Falls, WI, and David Maxey of Georgia; a step-daughter: Suzanne Butterfuss of Tomah, WI; five brothers: Walter of Nickerson, Richard of Cloquet, Harry of Nickerson, Loren of Nickerson, and Lyle of Kerrick; five sisters: Anna Johnson of Kerrick, Randy Van Guilder of Holyoke, Eva Makala of Meadowlands, Linda Hovila of Cloquet, and Karen Degerstrom of Hinckley; several grandchildren; and a special friend: Lillian McDade of Wrenshall. ELLEN KATHRYN HOFFMAN
ELLEN KATHRYN HOFFMAN, 74, of Barnum, died Sunday, February 27, 2000 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake.
She was born on March 31, 1925 in Bemidji, the daughter of Ole and Bessie (Trean) Qualley. She married Wilfred J. Hoffman on May 8, 1950 in Lake George, MN. Ellen was a very active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Barnum, a member of it’s Faith Circle and was an active participant in the weekly Bible studies. Ellen was a great cook and was especially known for her delicious pies and fried chicken. She enjoyed having daily coffee with her friends and having her family and friends over for meals. When having guests, she would always make sure their favorite kind of pie was baked fresh to be served at the end of their meal.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred on September 21, 1995; a grandson, Jacob Edward Adamic; four brothers, Olaf, Joseph, Gerhardt and Kenneth Qualley and a sister, Pauline.
A wonderful mother and grandmother, Ellen will be deeply missed by her family. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (John) Adamic of Superior; three sons, William (Mary) of Carlton, Richard (Gail) of Superior and Douglas (Nancy) of Barnum; six grandchildren, Kristin Adamic, Sara, Willie, Dianna, Erica and Andrea Hoffman; a great granddaughter, Samantha Marie Hoffman; and a sister, Marie (Peter) Lien of Fargo, ND.
Visitation was Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Barnum where visitation continued Thursday from 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service. Inurnment will take place in the spring in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Anita L. Hakala
Anita L. Hakala, 84, of Duluth formerly of Kettle River died on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. Born March 10, 1916 in Olean, New York to Charles and Bertha Simmons. She was married to Donald Hakala on October 11, 1945 in Lengby, MN. Anita owned and operated a gas station and convenience store in Kettle River for many years. After retirement she volunteered as a senior companion at Moose Lake Regional Treatment Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Pat Hakala (Bruce Morrison) of Kettle River; two grandchildren, Heather Hakala and Christina Morrison.
Preceded in death by her husband Donald M. Hakala; two brothers, Arnold Simmons and Charles F. Simmons.
Visitation and Memorial Services were held on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home. Reverend Hal Kampii officiated. Burial will be in Leonard Cemetery, Kalevala Township at a later date.
