Fred L. Johnson
Fred L. Johnson, 77, Sturgeon Lake, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at his home. He was born on December 14, 1928 in Windemere Township where he grew up and attended Minnesota Highway Department at the Barnum Office. Fred and Hazel lived on the family farm until 1956 when they moved to Moose Lake. In 1963, Fred and Hazel moved to Cloquet and Fred worked as Foreman of the Carlton Office for the Minnesota on August 12, 1911 to C.David and Emily Almquist. She attended school in Moose Lake graduated in 1929. Later Inez graduated from Superior Teachers College in 1930 and Bemidji State college in 1961, Magna cum laude. Inez taught school at Clear Creek School near Holyoke Minnesota school system at the Vadnais Heights School, retiring in 1973. Inez was a wonderful teacher, loved by so many. She still has numerous former students who continue to write to her and stop by and visit when in the area.
She was a member of Moose Lake Covenant Church, Life member of the Minnesota. Burial will be in Blomskog Cemetery in Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota.
Cora Arvilla Abrahamsen
Cora Arvilla Abrahamsen was born in Albert Lea township on December 27, 1919 to John and Marie Hansen. She was married to Alvin E. Meier on June 6, 1937. They moved to Partridge Township near Askov in 1942 where they farmed until 1967 when they moved to Bruno. Cora live there with Alvin until his death in 1981. She then moved to Barnum where she became employed as a cook at the Moose Lake Senior Citizens Center. She married Jens Abrahamsen on February 15, 1986. Cora and Jens lived on a farm north of Askov for many years until they moved to Sandstone.
Cora was a homemaker, foster parent to many children, cook at the Bruno Elementary School and the Senior Center in Moose Lake. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Finlayson where she was active in their Ladies Aide. She baked many cakes for weddings, which she would also cater, and was also an avid quilt-maker and a member of the Northstar Quilter"s Club.
Cora died on Saturday, June 24, 2006, in Moose Lake, North Dakota where he worked construction as an Operating Engineer Forty Niner and attended Jamestown University graduating with a Bachelor's in Business Administration. After college, Walter moved to Minneapolis where he worked for the Minnesota Department of Revenue until retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Moose Lake American Legion and VFW and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Walter truly enjoyed the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Rudolph and Anna Bloom and three brothers: Ray, Ralph, and Marvin.
Walter will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 22 years, Lynette; 3 children: Jay (Lisa) Bloom of St. Cloud; Rick (Indra) Bloom of Eagle River, Alaska; and Lori (Brian) Vannelli of Buffalo; 5 step-children: Lance Cavanaugh; Daniel Cavanaugh; Paul Cavanaugh; Erin Cavanaugh-Lewis; and Kathleen Allen;
6 Grandchildren; 3 Great Grandchildren; 14 Step Grandchildren; 9 Brothers and Sisters: Richard (Norma) Bloom of Cloquet; Anna (Glen) Johnson of Kerrick; Harry (Marilyn) Bloom of Nickerson; Randy (Jim) Van Guilder of Holyoke; Eva Makela of Duluth; Linda (Rick) Hovila of Cloquet; Karen (Jeff) Degerstrom of Finlayson; Loren Bloom of Nickerson; and Lyle (Diane) Bloom of Kerrick; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his dog, Coco.
Funeral services were held at 11 AM on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake with Pastor Nathan Anderson officiating. Full Military Honors were provided by the Moose Lake Honor Guard. Cremation followed the services with private family inurnment in Oak Lake Community Cemetery.

Victor R. Carlson
Victor R. Carlson, 81, Barnum, died peacefully on Friday, June 30, 2006 in Sunnyside Health Care Center, Cloquet. Victor was born on November 22, 1924 in Cloquet to Albert and Sevia (Peterson) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Mahtowa and later in Barnum. In 1943, Victor was drafted in the United States Navy and served with the Sea Bee's during WWII in the South Pacific where he helped build the airstrip that the atomic bomb was flown on. Following his Honorable Discharge, Victor lived in Minneapolis and worked for Western Electric until moving back to Mahtowa. On October 1, 1949, Victor married Betty Rilea in Mahtowa where they lived until purchasing a farm in Barnum Township. In 1955, Victor began working at Diamond Match in Cloquet where he worked for 31 years retiring in 1986. Victor and Betty continued living in Barnum Township until 1996 when they moved into Barnum. Victor was a very active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa. He will be truly remembered for the gift he had to communicate with children and the love which he gave them.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers: Emil, Virgil, Alvin, Clarence, Lawrence, and Paul.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years; Betty; three sons: Wayne (Karen) of Cromwell; David of Barnum; and Paul (Teri) of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters: Myra (Greg) Class of Mahtowa and Heidi (Paul) Appicelli of Winona; a brother: Donald (Gail) Carlson of Billings, Montana; 17 Grandchildren;
10 Great Grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 10 AM Monday, July 3, 2006 in the Barnum United Methodist Church with Pastor Karen Linne and Pastor Phil Swensson officiating. Helen Smith was the pianist. Music was provided by Allisen Waxflax as a soloist and Roger Gustafson, Doug Soukkala, and Chuck Porter as a trio. Casket Bearers were Jim Carlson, Jeremy Carlson, Jesse Carlson, Seth Carlson, Shay Carlson, Justin Appicelli, and Jason Appicelli. Honorary Bearers were Aaron Appicelli, Jonathan Carlson, and Chris Carlson. Burial was in Mount Salem Cemetery, Mahtowa with Full Military Honors accorded by the Carlton VFW. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the Staff at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet for their loving care and compassion.

Bruce Tyner Harding
Bruce Tyner Harding, long time East Central coach, passed away after a courageous battle with Cancer and suffering a stroke on June 28, 2006 at the Pine Medical Center.
Bruce taught and coached in the Sandstone Public Schools from 1966 until 1997, was very involved in the community. He served on numerous committees of the United Church of Christ, Pine Area Food Shelf Board, president of the East Central Booster Club and past president of the Sandstone Lions. Bruce was a life member and past president of the MN State high School Coaches Association, life member of the Football Coaches Association, MN Baseball Coaches Association and American Football Coaches Association.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lorna Harding. He is survived by his loving wife, Bobbi and son, Grant Harding; brother-in-law Gay (Marcia) Hagen of Duluth, nephew Guy (Dara) Hagen of Coon Rapids, nieces Sandy (Glen) Nelson of Duluth and Shari (Marty) Klika of Appleton; cousins Ken (Marilyn) Karnes of California, and rex Karnes of Washington, during World War II until she met and married Lauri Sainio on Oct. 2, 1943. She graduated from LPN school at the Virginia Junior College. She then went to work at the nursery at the Eveleth Fitzgerald Hospital. From there she went to the Eveleth Arrowhead Nursing Home until she retired. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Eveleth, the ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was past president of the Colo.; three grandchildren, Terry, Jodi and Heather; and four great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Malcolm, Lilli and Devonte; a brother Dean (Videlle) Howard, of San Diego, Kentucky Fried Chicken in West Duluth. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed being outdoors, snowmobiling and racing.
Ryan was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Peggy Gimpel and his paternal grandmother, Lorraine Bryce.
He is survived by his mother Patricia (Tomas Jr.) Cornelison, Holyoke; father Kenneth Nelson, Gordon, Wis.; sisters Jessie (Brandon) Wagner, Duluth and Haylie Cornelison, at home; maternal grandfather Donald Gimpel, Duluth; paternal grandparents Thomas Sr., (Carol) Cornelison, Canyon and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Duluth. Burial was at Holyoke cemetery. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.
