Ludke, Matthew Ludke, Michael Ludke, and Robert Newville. Military Honors were by the Cambridge American Legion and the Braham VFW. Interment was in the Rice Lake Lutheran Cemetery near Braham under the direction of Rock Mankie Burial and Cremation Services of Braham.

Edward Daniel Ludke died May 5, 2000 after a very short, but courageous and victorious struggle with lung cancer. He was born in Almena, WI. August 23, 1934 to Edward and Martha (Ulmer) Ludke. In 1952 he started working at Honeywell. He entered the Army in 1953 and was stationed in Germany as company clerk. He was honorably discharged in 1955 as a corporal. He then returned to Honeywell to complete 43 years of employment starting out in the union in stores and completing it as a Production Manager in the office. People enjoyed working for him because he was a “doer,” but also made work so much fun. Ed had four children, Debbie, Eddie, Michael and Matthew. In 1992 he married LaVonne; in 1993 he retired asking LaVonne if she would be willing to quit work so they could be together all the time. This she did. In 1994, they moved up to Grasston to their home on the Snake River, which was “as close to Heaven on earth as you could get.” He thoroughly enjoyed his home with the many flower gardens, wildlife and birds, especially the bluebirds who swooped his head as he put meal worms out daily. He loved the screened-in porch where he and LaVonne spent as much time as possible.

Whatever Ed did, he did with enthusiasm and vigor. Small things in life were so important to him. He was quick to smile and laugh. He loved to tease and play jokes. He also liked when others did the same to him. His faithfulness and devotion to his family, which was so very important to him, spread over into everything he did in life, including faithfully giving a weekly five-gallon pail of water to the new trees he planted, which was at least one a year. He never told anyone what to do, but would talk to them and then say “think about it.” He loved his pets and spoiled them which he said was okay to do because they gave so much enjoyment. Trips to the North Shore were as enjoyable to him as a trip any place else, but he always enjoyed seeing what was over the next hill. He was loyal to his Packers and Farmall tractors. He loved music and had a wonderful voice that boomed when it needed to, but could also be soft and gentle.

Ed was a kind, giving, caring, loving and fun man. You never knew what he was going to say or do next. During his diagnosis and treatment his attitude was better than those around him and even though he knew he was dying, he still wanted to fight because of his love for LaVonne. His love for her was immense. The kids always said they were connected at the hip. You never got one Ludke, you always got two. They were so fortunate to have a love that many people never experience. Their time together on earth was too short and went too fast, but is treasured. LaVonne says that Ed taught her how to truly enjoy life, to laugh and tease, but most of all how to show love. He made her feel so special all the time. The kids say she has been so good to him, but she says “He treated me like a queen so why shouldn’t I treat him like a king!” He made LaVonne feel complete.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Martha Ludke.

He is survived by his wife LaVonne of Grasston; daughter, Debra Ann Willem (Terry) of Chisago City; son, Edward John Ludke of North St. Paul; son, Michael Ludke of Park Rapids; stepdaughter, Wendy Grahek of Apple Valley; son, Matthew Ludke of Maplewood; five grandchildren: Annie Thornburg, Rosie Bruce, Terry Willem, Michael Willem, Stephanie Ludke; three great-grandchildren: Kayla Bruce, Madison Thornburg, Cole David Anderson; two sisters: Olga Waters (Wally) of Glenwood City, WI.; Elsie Newville (Clarence) of Rice Lake, WI.
