Alden Nolby

Alden Russell Nolby, 71, of Minneapolis, formerly of Maple Ridge Township, died February 2, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 7 at Siloa Lutheran Church with Rev. Jim Hougen officiating. Music was provided by Richard All and Marilyn McGriff. Burial was in the family plot at Siloa Lutheran Cemetery with his friends as pallbearers.

He was born in Braham June 6, 1930 to Nels Albin and Emma (Peterson) Nolby. He grew up in Maple Ridge Township and attended the Day School. He was confirmed at Siloa Lutheran Church in Maple Ridge. He served in the U.S. Army and was later discharged to run the family farm. He later worked in the construction trades. He had lived in Minneapolis for the past 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, Lester, Kenneth and Arnold.

He is survived by his sister, Inez (Neil) Navarre of Gaylord, Wyoming.

Services were held Feb. 13 at Calvary Lutheran Church of Rush Point, with Rev. Keith Kolzow officiating. Marian Eklund, accompanied by Crystal Peterson, sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Children of the Heavenly Father.” Burial was in Isanti Union Cemetery with Claire Bismark, Bruce, Clarence, Jr., Donald and Jim Burda, and Kenneth Holmstrom as pallbearers.

He was born September 12, 1918 at Stark, to Olaf and Alma Olson. He was raised at Stark and attended District 23 School. Marvin served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in England. On March 29, 1958, he married Bernice Olander at New Brighton. They lived on a farm at Harris. They later farmed at Spring Lake for a couple of years before moving back to the Harris community where they farmed. While farming he also worked at Harris Feed Mill and did custom farming. After Marvin quit farming he worked as a mechanic for Wayside Equipment at Harris until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post 139 at Harris. In his younger years he enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He also like to cook and garden.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sister and brother-in-law, Edythe and Maurice Peterson; sister, Laura Olson; brother, Henry Olson; and brother-in-law, Clarence Burda.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Harris; daughter, Shirley Olson of Isanti; sisters, Helen Burda of North Branch, Doris Hermel of Chisago City, and Lillian Olson of Cambridge;

Arrangements were with Cambridge Funeral Home-Strike Chapel.

Tillie Olson

Tillie Desideria Olson, 90, of Cambridge, died at Cambridge Health Care Center February 5, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 10 from North Isanti Baptist Church with Rev. Jonathan Larson officiating. Mary Falk and Joyce Swanson, accompanied by Lois Larson, sang “The Old Rugged Cross,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Burial was in the church cemetery with Robert Peterson, Karla Luck, Jeffrey Olson, Karol Fischer, Karen Olson and Ronald and Greg Anderson as pallbearers.

She was born in Isanti Township November 30, 1910 to Arvid and Helena (Pearson) Staff. She grew up in the area and attended Dist. 3 country school. On March 29, 1929 she married Gilbert Olson at the Salem Lutheran Church parsonage in Dalbo. They couple lived in Springvale, Blomford, and Athens until 1936 when they moved to Minneapolis. In 1941 they moved to the Cambridge area where they lived for the rest of their lives. Gilbert preceded her in death August 4, 2000. Tillie worked at Jiffy Taters and Cambridge Launderers & Cleaners from which she retired in 1972 at age 62. She was a member of North Isanti Baptist Church and its Ladies Aid and White Cross. She enjoyed crocheting, playing Yahtzee and cards. She loved her family, flowers, and every living thing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; grandson, Virgil Dean Anderson; brothers, Siguerd and Erick Staff; sister, Cecelia; half-brother, Adolph Edling and half-sister, Evelyn Edling.

She is survived by her son, Harlow (Barbara) Olson of Randall; daughters, Barbara (Jim) Anderson of Mora; and Janice Olson and special friend Robert Hamsmith of North Branch; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Victor Staff of Cambridge.

Arrangements were with Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Maryann Blumer-Posl

Maryann Blumer-Posl, 49, of Dayton, MN., formerly of Isanti, died at her home February 6, 2001.

Services were held from Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel Feb. 10 with Rev. David Gerhardt officiating. Kayla and Krista Gerhardt sang “Amazing Grace” and “One Day At A Time.” Peggy Gerhardt served as organist. Burial was in Stanford Cemetery with Peter Blumer, Terry Miller, Kevin Simonson, Jay, Jeremy and Pat Torgerson and Tim Tuckenhagen as pallbearers.

She was born in Roseau May 2, 1951 to Melvin and Marian Blumer. When she was five-years-old (1957) she moved with her family to Isanti. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1969 and then attended Anoka Tech and became a licensed practical nurse. She worked in Home Care and at Travilla Nursing Homes. In July 1986 she married Daniel Posl and they lived in Anoka before moving to Fargo for four years where she worked for Case Implement. She moved back to the Anoka area and just recently moved to Detroit Lakes. She enjoyed reading, knitting and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin, in 1987; brother, Melvin Jr. and all of her grandparents.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel; daughters Brandi Blumer of East Bethel and Danielle Posl of Detroit Lakes; her mother, Marian O. Blumer of Grand Rapids; brothers, Tom (Margaret Ann) Blumer of Memphis, TN; Mike (Linda) Blumer of Greenbush; John (Suki) Blumer of Lace, WA; Raymond (Pattie) Blumer of Isanti; and Ellard Blumer of Isanti; sisters, Ruth Shamp of Bertha and Connie Schintgen of Coon Rapids, three step-brothers, two step-sisters and by her extended family, Mary Tobako and family of East Bethel.

Kenneth Shallman

Kenneth J. Shallman, 82, of Braham, formerly of Wayzata and Cambridge died February 5, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 9 from the Historic Ft. Snelling Chapel. Burial was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery with full military honors.

He is survived by his wife, Dodie of Braham; son, Harold; daughters, Penelope, Patricia, Martha, Mary and Caroline; brother, James; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were with Rock Mankie Funeral Home in Braham.

Yuriko (Lee) Mayer

Yuriko (Lee) Mayer of Cambridge, died February 5, 2001 at the age of 71.

A memorial service was held Feb. 9 from Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Erling Tungseth officiating. Music was provided by Julie Anderson.

She was born December 29, 1929 in Japan where she grew up. In 1949 she met Ronald Mayer who was stationed in the Air Force in Japan. After a long courtship, the couple were married in Tokyo August 11, 1953. Ron returned to the United States in 1953 and Yuriko joined him in 1954 and became a housewife. The couple adopted a son, Donald, in 1959. They were married for 30 years and lived most of them in Mora. She moved to Cambridge in the mid-1980s where she lived and worked for the remainder of her life.

She is survived by her son, Donald R. Mayer of St. Paul and by her former husband, Ronald E. Mayer of Mora.

Linda Goldenstein

Linda Kay Goldenstein, 34, of San Jose, Thompson and Mike and Robert Uhden.

She was born in Minneapolis July 20, 1966 to Clinton and Irene Goldenstein. In 1972 she moved with her family to Isanti and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1984. Following graduation she moved to California where she worked as a Senior Systems Analyst for Pacific Bell. Her hobbies included singing, dirt bike riding, camping and she also played in several dart leagues.

She is survived by her parents, Clinton and Irene Goldenstein of Isanti; sister, Dawn Goldenstein of Isanti’ special friend, Ken Crowell of San Jose and godparents, Uncle Marvin and Aunt Lillian Johnson of Coon Rapids.

Arrangements were with Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel.

Wilbur Oker

Wilbur Matthew Oker, 86, died at his home February 13, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 16 from Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel with Rev. Robert Venneman officiating. Burial was in Gerdin Cemetery with Jay Eastlund, Chad and John Lindberg Jr., Wayne Lindell, Curtis Lodin and Rodney Piper as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were John Lindberg and Ray Lodin.

He was born in Isanti County May 30, 1914 to Matthew and Esther Oker. He was raised in Oxford Township where he attended school. On December 6, 1941 he married Marjorie Marose at South Isanti Baptist Church. They lived in St. Paul and Minneapolis for a short time before returning to the Isanti area in 1944. Wilbur was preceded in death by Marjorie on October 20, 1985. Wilbur’s family was very close and he greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also liked gardening, taking rides through the area where he was raised and visiting with his friends, especially his neighbor, Sam.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, David; son-in-law, Gilbert; brother, Harley; and sisters, Elaine and Effie.

He is survived by his sons, Lawrence (Becky) Oker of Cambridge and Dennis Oker of Isanti; daughters, Cheryl Peterson of Isanti and Debra (John) Lindberg of Isanti; grandchildren, Jill, Melissa, John, Chad and Wendy and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley and Jerret.

Leona Olson

Leona Lucille Olson, 77, died at her home in Stanchfield February 12, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 17 from Rock Mankie Funeral Home in Braham with Rev. Jim Haga officiating. Lawrence Olson provided the music, accompanied by Mark Scherer on the organ. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Forks, N.D. with Patrick Como. Lawrence Olson, Scott Hale, Tom Polzin, Harold Eklund and Myron Twingstrom as pallbearers.

She was born in Grand Forks March 24, 1923 to John and Emma (Blue) Bach. She was married to Alphonse Charron Sr. from 1940-1959 and they were parents on Geraldine (Beverly) and Alphonse Jr. She was married to Ernest Plageman from 1963-1976 and the lived in Kindred, N.D. They adopted Randy and Scott Plageman and Steven Petersen. She married Walfred Olson in 1978 and they lived in Stanchfield until his death in 1990. Leona spent many years being a foster parent, both in Minnesota with her husband, Ernest. They had over 80 children pass through their doors, many in crisis situations. She was active in Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts and was a charter member of the former Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Isanti. She was a member of the Rush Point Leisure Club and the Indiana and their children, Alison, Brenda, Carrie and John; Randy (Michelle) Plageman of Braham and their children, Matthew and Croix; Scott Plageman of Stanchfield and Steven Petersen of Stanchfield; 12 great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Zachary, Cordell, Skyler, Christine; Kayla; Ashley; Butch; Samantha; Tegan; Bryce and MacKenzie; sister, Alice (Howard) Leen of California and Ansel (Bud) Batch of Minnesota to Raymond and Olga (Wenzel) Spencer November 14, 1918.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in March 1999; his son, David; sister, Charlotte and brother, Raymond.

He is survived by his sons, Duane (Nancy) Spencer of Ham Lake; Don Spencer of Coon Rapids; Ron (Lorie) Spencer of San Jose, CA; and Richard (Victoria) Ranck of Palmdale, CA; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and by his brother, Lester Spencer.

Denise Lorentz

Denise Katherine Lorentz, 47, of East Bethel, died February 13, 2001 at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale from complications of Lupus.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 17 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar with Father James Holl officiating. Music was provided by the Resurrection Choir. Burial was in the church cemetery with Craig David, Frank, Jim, Kenny and Tom Lorentz and Steve Wilson as pallbearers.

She was born in St. Paul July 10, 1953 to John and Aileen David. She was raised in West St. Paul and was a 1971 graduate of Brady High School. On December 30, 1978 she married Bob Lorentz at St. Pascal’s Catholic Church in St. Paul and they have lived in East Bethel ever since. Denise really enjoyed her nights out with her girlfriends, Jody, Deb, Julie and Jeana.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Katie.

She will be lovingly remembered by her beloved husband, Bob; son, Dan; daughter, Elena; mother and step-father, Aileen and Andy Koenen of West St. Paul; father, John T. David of West St. Paul; brothers, Craig David and friend, Mary Aguilar of West St. Paul and Bruce David of St. Paul; sisters, Jane (Steve) Wilson of Ham Lake and Mary Beth Braun of Maple Lake.

Arrangements were with Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel.

Alfred Swanson

Alfred W. Swanson, 84, of Braham, died at Cambridge Medical Center February 14, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 19 from Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard Chronis officiating. Ruth Grundyson provided the music. Burial was in Rice Lake Cemetery near Braham with Michael, Patrick, and Timothy Grayson, Joseph and Jeffrey Keith and Ryan Becker as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Nathan and Matthew Folkestad.

He was born in Minneapolis May 12, 1916 to Fred and Anna Swanson. On October 12, 1940 he married Vivian Mollet and they lived in the Onamia area where Audrey and Beverly were born in 1941 and 1944. They moved to Cambridge in 1951 where Debra was born in 1953. In 1955 the family moved to Braham. As a young man, Alfred lived in Oak Park, MN. where he farmed with his father. He moved to the Marble, MN. area where he worked for the Mesaba-Cliffs Mining Co. He moved his young family to Milaca where he worked for Land-O-Lakes. He became a buttermaker in Cambridge and after four years moved to Braham and was a buttermaker at Braham Creamery. Alfred was chief buttermaker in Braham until the creamery closed. He worked as a custodian at Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church for 18 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian; brother, William; and sisters, Christine and Margaret.

He is survived by his daughters, Audrey (Carl) Peterson of Braham; Beverly (Jerry) Grayson of Medford; and Debra (Todd) Keith of Woodbury; grandchildren, Terri Folkestad, Sharon Becker, Michael, Patrick and Timothy Grayson and Joseph and Jeffrey Keith; 10 great-grandchildren and by his sister, Beatrice Hausladen of White Bear.

Arrangements were with Rock Mankie Burial and Cremation Services of Braham.

Inez Woodford

Inez Yvonne Woodford, 68, of Cambridge, formerly of St. Paul, died February 20, 2001 at Cambridge Medical Center.

Services were held Feb. 23 at Cambridge Funeral Home-Strike Chapel with Rev. Jim DeSpieglaere officiating. Burial was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery with Jason and Josh Engquist, Mariah Ries, James, Macadam and Marty Woodford as pallbearers.

She was born March 16, 1932 in Alida Township, Beltrami County, Florida in the winters and in Outing, MN. during the summers. They moved to Cambridge last December. Inez enjoyed working crossword puzzles, fishing, and making calendars and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Ida Johnson and by her brothers, Luverne and Danny Johnson.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Wesley; sons, Steve (Daveen) Woodford of East Bethel; Dave (Sue) Woodford of Rush City; daughter, Sandy (Ed) Engquist of Chisago City; grandchildren, Joshua, Jason, Kimberly, Stephanie, Mariah, Paul, Jennifer and Christopher and by great-grandchildren, Dylon, Zachary and Kaylee.

Terence “Terry” Monroe

Terry Monroe, age 22, of Spencer Brook, passed away February 25, 2001 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001 at Spencer Brook United Methodist Church with Pastor Diane Nelson officiating. A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Strike Funeral Home - Isanti Chapel. At the funeral, Meryle Sorterberg and Rene Hoversten will serve as musicians. Pallbearers will be Shawn Monroe, Heidi Monroe, Matt Toon, Bruce Thompson, Lori Thompson, and Dale Tuma. Interment will be in Nichols Cemetery.

Terence Jason Harold Monroe was born in Lyons, Kansas October 25, 1978. He came to Thompson and daughters Jamie and April; Uncle Jason and Aunt Melody Mason; other uncles, aunts, cousins, and many friends. Grampa Harold Monroe and Great-Gramma Irma Monroe will be there to meet Terry in Heaven.

Robert “Bud” Johnson

Robert “Bud” Johnson, 81, of Braham, died at Villa Health Care Center in Mora February 16, 200.

Services were held Feb. 20 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Braham with Rev. Harvey Johnson officiating. Music was provided by Marie Grundberg and Carol Schmakel. Burial was in Grass Lake Mission Cemetery in Grass Lake Township with Scott Johnson, Shawn and Shane Wyandt, Alexis Ponto, and Sadie and Samantha Johnson as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Stacie-Danger Weston, Stephanie Danger and Steven Johnson. Military Honors were provided by the Mora American Legion.

He was born in Grass Lake Township October 4, 1919 to Sophie and Oscar Johnson. He grew up and attended school in the Grasston and Henriette area. Bud served two years in the Armed Forces. He worked for Reinhardt & Brothers in Minneapolis where he married Helen Marshall. They moved to Braham in 1945 and had three children, Rollie, Barb and Laurie. Bud and Helen purchased a farm where they lived until 1999 when they moved into the city of Braham. He worked for Dahlman Mfg. and farmed until retirement. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.

He was preceded in death by brothers, George and Wilford Johnson and sisters, Delores Johnson and Rose Beckman.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Roland (Angie) Johnson; daughters, Barb (Dick) Danger and Laurie (Jerry) Wyandt; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and brothers, Earl and Richard Johnson.

Arrangements were with Rock Mankie Burial and Cremation Services of Braham.

Ronald “Barney” Spencer

Ronald (Barney) Spencer, 92, of Cambridge, died February 21, 2001 at Kanabec Hospital in Mora.

Services were held Feb. 26 from Cambridge Lutheran Church with Rev. Erling Tungseth officiating. Music was provided by Lawrence Olson with Mary Kay O’Neill as organist. Burial was in the church cemetery with Doug, Jeff, Jary and Brien Heinemann and Brad and Luke Spencer as pallbearers.

He was born in Blaisdell, N.D. December 22, 1908 to Byron and Lula (Hoflus) Spencer. The family moved to East Cambridge in 1920 and Barney attended Moody School and Cambridge High School. He worked for Bernick’s Bottling Co. in St. Cloud and for P.H. Larson Meat Market prior to his marriage to Frances Larson March 27, 1937. They were blessed with four children, James, Don, Kay and Michael, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Barney was self-employed, owning and managing S & M Livestock Sales Barn where weekly auctions were held. He also managed East Central Livestock in Mora for a couple years. After retiring. Barney’s interests were antiques, refurbishing horse collars and hames and selling them at craft sales that he and Fran participated in.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles; grandchild, Darren; and great-grandchild, Jayden.

He is survived by his wife, Fran, of Cambridge; children, James (Darla) Spencer of Cambridge; Don (Marilyn) Spencer of Cambridge; Kay (Jary) Heinemann of Elk River; and Michael (Charlotte) Spencer of Cambridge; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and by his sister, Beth Findell of Cambridge.

Arrangements were with Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Gerald “Frenchy” LeVasseur Sr.

Gerald (Frenchy) Thomas LeVasseur Sr., 65, of Rush City, died at his home February 24, 2001.

Services were held Feb. 28 from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rush City with Father Ralph Huar officiating. Visitation was scheduled for 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Cambridge Funeral Home-Strike Chapel and for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Cemetery in Hugo with Gerald, Thomas, Donald and Steve LeVasseur, Steve Morris, Aaron Johnson and Richard Cukla as pallbearers.

He was born in St. Paul July 20, 1934 to Joseph and Inez LeVasseur. He was raised in White Bear Lake where he attended school. Following school, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. On January 19, 1962 he married Virginia Zieman of St. Paul and they lived in St. Paul before moving to the St. Croix River Valley where they raised their family. In 1989 Frenchy and Virginia moved to the Rush City area where they have lived ever since. Frenchy loved music, especially playing the guitar. He also enjoyed horses, motorcycle riding. boating, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Inez and by his brother, John (Jack) LeVasseur.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Virginia; children, Gerald Thomas LeVasseur Jr. and his partner, Steve Morris of Stanchfield; Thomas Gerald (Antonia) LeVasseur of Baldwin, WI; Belinda Lee Beebe and Richard Cukla of Rush City and Donald Alfred (Kelly) Le Vasseur of Lakeland; siblings, JoAnn and Lawrence Murphy; Donald and Carol Le Vassseur; Joseph Jr. and Pam LeVasseur; Elmer LeVasseur; Marlene and Ed Tauzell; Raymond LeVasseur; Margaret (Muggs) and Richard Linzmeier, Steven and Elaine LeVasseur; and Albert and Shelley LeVasseur; and by grandchildren, Aaron, Amber, Chelsie, Valerie, Chad, Thomas, Christopher and Alexander.
