Charles Bourke

Charles Henry Bourke, 75, of Cambridge, died peacefully in his sleep March 4, 2000 at St. Cloud VA Medical Center after a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 9, from Salem Lutheran Church in Dalbo with Rev. Harvey Jackson officiating. Shirlee Holyfield, accompanied by Nancy Peabody, will sing “Amazing Grace” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Pallbearers will be Rick Hari, Jeff Monson, Ron Monson, Christopher Rollins, David Caldwell and Michael Caldwell. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.March 8 at the Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Charles was born June 19, 1924 in Minneapolis to Charles and Helga (Sorenson) Bourke. It was there that he grew up and attended school. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Panama during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, he married Joan Koeller. The couple lived in Blaine, Bloomington and in 1967 moved to Cambridge. They had four children, Richard, Thomas, Curtis and Deborah.

Charles was a master mason by trade working 40 years in the union. He was very good at many different things, he could carve beautiful things from wooden ships in bottles to soap carvings, played the harmonica, enjoyed playing dice, cards, and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a strong and loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, son Thomas and many brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Bourke of Cambridge, sons Richard Bourke of Cambridge, Curtis (Patricia) Bourke of Cambridge, daughter Debi (Duggan) Kelly of Minneapolis, 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many foster children, sisters Bea Boxeth of Minneapolis, Shirley Cherrer of Kansas City, MO, brother Kenneth Bourke of Isanti.

Arrangements are with the Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Lois Stake

Lois Yvonne Stake, 70, of Eden Prairie, formerly of Cambridge, died February 29, 2000 at Castle Ridge Care Center in Eden Prairie.

Services were held March 4 at Cross of Glory Baptist Church in Hopkins with Rev. Jonathan Herring officiating. Music was provided by Kathy Bjork, Karin Blomquist and Karna Hougen. Organist was Sue Matz. Pallbearers were Neil Johnson, Keith Johnson, Dean Kaihoi, Scott Peterson, Dustin Peterson, and Tom Stake. Burial was in Cambridge Union Cemetery.

Lois Yvonne Avelsgaard was born to Ray and Alma Avelsgaard in Minneapolis June 28, 1929. As a child of seven years, she was hit by a car and miraculously recovered after losing consciousness for nine days. When she was 12, the family moved to Little Falls, where they managed a small resort of three cabins and a gas station. A year later they relocated to “37 Acres,” a summer resort near Camp Ripley. It was there that Lois refined her “jitterbug” with the soldiers at the dance hall. In 1944 they moved to Cambridge where her father became chief of police. As a sophomore at Cambridge High School she met James Stake. It was through his witness that she came to know Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. She graduated from high school in 1947. Upon graduation, Lois worked as a telephone operator, a “Hello Girl.” Jim and Lois were united in marriage in 1950. The couple spent three years in Dubuque, IA, and then moved north where Jim worked for the Star and Tribune newspaper. They raised their family in South Minneapolis. Lois worked for several photographers in a variety of roles. She was later employed by Lutheran Brotherhood. In 1990 she was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, which robbed her of her independence, but not her optimistic spirit. Her faith in God carried her through the challenge of living for years with near total paralysis. God answered her prayer when He took her home as she slept on the morning of February 29, 2000.

Lois is survived by husband of 50 years, James; son, Thomas; daughters, Diane (Neil) Johnson, Karin (Dean) Kaihoi, Julie (Scott) Peterson; grandchildren, Kjersten, Keith Johnson, Leah, Chelsea, Anna, Shelby, Laura Kaihoi, Kylie, DJ Peterson; brother, Roger Avelsgaard; niece, Sara Avelsgaard.

Arrangements were with the Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Stanley Hohn

Stanley (Red) Wendell Hohn, 57, of Isanti, died March 5, 2000 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Home in St. Paul after a short and arduous battle with lung cancer.

Services were held March 9 from Faith Lutheran Church in Isanti with Rev. Curtis Peter officiating. Mary Kay O’Neill served as organist. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Mora with Jim Chovan, Jason Hohn, Duane and LeRoy Gilbert, Lowell Miller and Gerald Rochel as pallbearers.

He was born on the family farm near Mora in Kanabec County on June 21, 1942 to Arnold Arthur and Alice Lois (Gilbert) Hohn. He attended part of the first grade at Willard Country School in Mora. In 1946 he, his mother, and brother Wesley moved to Lake Benton, MN. He attended Lake Benton School except for third grade at Verdi, MN. and the 11th grade at Mora High School. He graduated from Lake Benton High School in 1960. While in high school he earned letters in football, baseball and basketball. However, he was best known for his love of music and he sang in the school choir. In 1960, after graduation, he volunteered for the draft. He served in the U.S. Army, active duty from October 1960 until October 1962 assigned as a special orders clerk at Fort Ord, CA. and Fort Lewis, WA. After active duty he served in the U.S. Army Reserve from October 1962 until September 1966. After discharge from active duty he returned to Mora where he worked at Boatell Co. and Northwest LP Gas. On June 4, 1966 he married Geraldine Ella Herwald at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Princeton. They lived in Cambridge until 1967 when they moved to Coon Rapids. He worked at Twin City Army Ammunition in New Brighton as an accountant from 1966-1974 until the plant closed after the Vietnam War ended. He started work at Onan Corporation in August 1974 where he was employed in the Technical Publications Dept. as a document administrator. He celebrated 25 years with the company last August. In 1971 Stan and Gerry moved to their home south of Isanti and became active members of Faith Lutheran Church. He served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, on the Church Council, sang in the church choir and helped with the construction of the new addition. Stan was a man of many interests and skills. He loved old country western music and was an avid fan of country singer Johnny Cash. He was a very good dancer, enjoying old tyme dancing, He also loved being outside tending a vegetable and flower garden. Stan and Gerry were parents of two children, Kalee, born in 1972 and Karl born in 1974 and had one granddaughter, Jocelyn, born in 1999. In 1981 Stan and Gerry became antique dealers and sold antiques at the state fairgrounds and the Cambridge fair grounds antique shows as well as at Isanti Antiques and Heritage Antique Mall in Ham Lake. As a dealer, Stan enjoyed attending flea markets and auctions. He collection many things including depression glass, Lake Benton memorabilia and old furniture which he liked to refinish. His most recent interest was old tractors and he was in the process of restoring a Farmall 230. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, son-in-law and friend who will always be remembered for his kindness, his willingness to help others, a song or two and his light-hearted remarks.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold; and by his half-sister, Amelia.

He is survived by his mother, Alice Hohn of Mora; his wife of 33 years, Geraldine; daughter, Kalee (Michael) Hetland and granddaughter, Jocelyn Hetland of Coon Rapids; son, Karl, of Isanti and his special friend, Amy Lloyd, of Columbia Heights; brothers, Virgil (Patricia) of Mora; Charles (Eunice) of Mora; Wesley (Sharon); half-sisters, Linda (LeRoy) Templin of Cambridge; Sandra (Alan) Preisinger of Crosby; Rhonda Amo and fiance, Alan Morgan of St. Paul; Brenda (Keith) Massner of Andover; half-brother, Arnold Jr. (Kristy) of Mora; step-mother, Ruth Hohn of Mora; and mother-in-law, Regina Herwald of Princeton.

Arrangements were with Strike Funeral Home-Isanti Chapel.

Dorothy Foote

Dorothy Arlene Foote, 74, of Isanti, died at her home March 8, 2000.

A memorial service was held March 13 at Long Lake Lutheran Church with Rev. Howard Skulstad officiating. Howard Doble was the soloist and Kristy Anderson served as organist. Burial was in Nichols Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Holly Andries, Beth Gustafson, Audrey Hanson, Bonnie Ludwig, Avis Swan and Marilyn Wilson.

She was born September 21, 1925 in Montevideo, MN. to Peder and Jorgina Belsaas. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota-Duluth for a short time and soon began working for Norwest Bank in Duluth. On May 10, 1958 he married Mary Dietman at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Duluth. They made their home in Duluth where Richard continued to work at Norwest Bank where he eventually became executive vice president as well as regional vice president of Norwest Corporation in Minneapolis. After 27 years at the bank in Duluth he and Mary moved to Cambridge in 1985 where he worked at Peoples Bank of Commerce for 14 years until retiring March 1, 1999 as senior vice president. Richard did a majority of his work with banking in human resources and took great pride in how he could teach others to excel in the banking profession. While in Duluth he was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Lawrence Catholic. When he moved to Cambridge he became a member of Christ The King Catholic Church. He was very active in several civic organizations in Duluth and Cambridge including past president of the All American Club in Duluth, past president of the Banking Institute of America, Duluth; Knights of Columbus, member of Ridge View County Club, Chambers of Commerce in Duluth and Cambridge and the Purple Hawk Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, curling, was an avid gardener and especially loved his grandchildren and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Cambridge; sons and their families, Steve (Marcia) and children, Amy Emily and Michael of Omaha, NE; Jeff (Julie) and children, Zachary, Seth and MacKenzie of Granite Falls; Dan (DeAnna) and children Lea, Alison of Cambridge; Tom (Lisa) and children, Kjerstin, Benjamin and Luke of Cambridge; and by his brother Dennis (Bonnie) of Minneapolis.

Arrangements were with Carlson-Labatte Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Ernie J. Barrett

Ernie J. Barrett, 69, of Cambridge, formerly of Stark, died suddenly March 17, 2000 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

A memorial service was held March 20 from Fish Lake Lutheran Church with Pastor Walter Leitze officiating. Dorothy Terpstra, accompanied by LaDonna Olson, sang “Sentimental Journey.” Granddaughter, Stacy Thompson, played “Amazing Grace” on the piano.

He was born in Muskegon, Mich. May 21, 1930 to Ernest and Anna (Plumhoff) Barrett. On March 7, 1949 he married Sally Nelson and they lived in Minnesota. They had lived in Stark for 25 years. Ernie worked as a bus driver for the State of Thompson of Stacy; Susan Barrett and Valerie Shepherd of Moundsview; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and by his sister, Marteena O’Brien of Iowa. She attended school and grew up in Cass County, North Dakota. They farmed in Maddock until Frederick’s death in 1942. Mary moved back to Cass County, Minnesota Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls with Randy Thompson, Jeff Kranz, Steve Lind, Jim Williams, Jim Holmes, Wayne Hermanson, Stan Harper and LeVelle Wallace as pallbearers.

He was born August 1, 1936 to Herman and Bertha (Schwarz) Jabs in Perham, MN. He grew up on the farm and after graduating from high school he enlisted in the Army where he served as a medic in the 10th Division. He enjoyed his dog, fishing, woodworking, gardening, cutting firewood, playing the accordion, playing horseshoes with Marlo, deer hunting with Randy and Brian and traveling to Germany. He loved to talk about farming and growing up on the farm with his brother, Elmer. He loved to tell jokes and spend time with his friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; grandson, Travis; and nephew, Rick.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie of Cambridge; children, Bernie (Lea) of St. Paul; Mary Ann (Tim) of New Richmond; Ed Jr. (Sharna) of Cambridge; Bernice (Brian) of Zimmerman; and Matthew (Melanie) of Harris; 14 grandchildren; onw great-grandson; brother Elmer (Ida Marie) Jabs of Port Angeles, WA; and niece Karla (Frank) of Port Angeles.

A special thanks to the Cambridge Hospice staff, hospice Care Givers, ministry of the Cambridge Lutheran Church, Pastor Allan George of New Richmond Methodist Church and all the care and concern from family and friends.

Nels Fostveit

Nels A. Fostveit, 63, of Waseca, died March 21, 2000 at the Waseca Medical Center.

Services were held March 25 from North Waseca Lutheran Church of rural Waseca with Rev. Allan Tveite officiating. Burial was in Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.

He was born in St. Mary Township, Waseca County, Alabama; Ethel Mae Lee of Red Wing; Ruth (Richard) Michaelis of Bloomington; Judy (Jon) Greeney of Waseca; and Kay (Joseph) Fitterer of Brainerd; sister-in-law, Bethel Perkins of Mesa, AZ.

Brandon Michael Johnson

Brandon Michael Johnson, two months, of Braham, died March 21, 2000 at Kanabec Hospital in Mora.

Services were held March 25 from Rock-Mankie Funeral Home in Braham with Rev. Michael Ard officiating. Burial was in Rice Lake Cemetery near Braham with Scott, Erin, Dustin, Brad, Randy, Bobby, Terry and Jimmy as pallbearers.

Brandon was born January 26, 2000 in Cambridge to Heidi Crist and Cory Johnson. Even though his life was short, his memories will carry on forever.

Brandon brought unbelievable happiness to his mother, father and brother. He brought the smiles back to his mother’s face. Brandon awakened a darkened space in our hearts, filled us with joy that we didn’t know was missing. A purpose and hope of everlasting love. Brandon was Jacob’s best friend and brother. He removed all the loneliness of being an only child for Jacob and when asked what Jacob wanted to say to Brandon he replied, “I love Brandon and I will miss you real much,” also that “he went to play with Cody and I’ll stay with Mom and Daddy.”

Brandon was preceded in death by his brother, Cody.

He is survived by his parents, Heidi and Cory of Braham; brother, Jacob; maternal grandmother, Yvonne Osterdyk of Pine City; paternal grandparents, John and Lila Johnson of Braham and many aunts, uncles, great aunts, and great uncles, cousins, and friends.

Wayne (Bobbie) Anderson

Wayne Bobbie (Bob) Anderson, 80, of Amery, WI. formerly of Isanti, died at Golden Age Manor in Amery March 7, 2000.

Services were held March 11 from Balsam Lutheran Church in rural Amery with Rev. Ed Rasmussen officiating. Eric Peterson and the church choir provided the music. Julaine Berglund was the organist. Burial was in the church cemetery with Dave Berglund, Marilyn Bottolfson, Carl and Glen Clausen, Bob Froshaug, and Roger Anderson as pallbearers.

He was born in Apple River Township of Polk County, Ohio and Andy (Shirley) Anderson of Amery; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were with Williamson Funeral Home of Amery.

Florence Lidstrom

Florence Evelyn Lidstrom, age 92, of Cambridge, died March 31, 2000 at Cambridge Medical Center.

Funeral services were held April 4 at First Baptist Church in Cambridge with Rev. Paul Lundgren and Rev. Robert Gillquist officiating. Vocalists were Jeanne Johnson and Wendy Gordy. Organist was Nadette Waligora. Grandchildren serving as pallbearers were Thomas and Timothy Walker, Dean, Matthew and Todd Engstrom, Michael Johnson, Jill Turpin and Linda Stulc. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery at Mora.

She was born September 23, 1907 at Minneapolis to Oscar Swedenborg and Carrie Hammerstrom. When Florence was five years old she was adopted by Frank and Anna Hendrickson. They made their home on a farm in Milaca where she was raised. Florence was employed several years at the Ben Franklin store in Mora. It was at this store where she met Harry Lidstrom. They were united in marriage on April 9, 1939 in Mora and made their home on a farm in Mora. In 1947 they moved to Opstead where they owned and operated the Opstead General Store for 12 years. They then moved to Malmo where they owned and operated the Malmo Store until 1980. On August 23, 1982 Harry passed away and a short time later Florence moved to Ashland Place in Cambridge. She resided at Ashland Place until 10 months ago when she was cared for at Grandview Christian Home in Cambridge.

Florence was a very generous and giving person who would help others in any way she could. She especially helped others through devotedly praying for them. Florence also read the Bible daily to a special blind friend. She also volunteered frequently at Grandview and First Baptist Church in Cambridge. Besides helping others, Florence enjoyed crocheting and quilting.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Milton Lidstrom; by sons, Hartley as an infant, and David and Paul; by brother, Russell Hendrickson and son-in-law, Robert Johnson.

She will be lovely remembered by her daughters, Janice (Gary) Walker of Minneapolis, Donna (Paul) Engstrom of New Brighton, Doreen Abbott of Roseville and Karen Johnson of Mahtomedi; by eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were entrusted to the care of Cambridge Funeral Home-Strike Chapel.

Julia LaPlant

Julia Victoria LaPlant, 91, of Cambridge, died March 22, 2000 at Grandview Christian Home where she had lived since January 1999.

Services were held March 25 at Elk River United Methodist Church with Pastor Gene Rick officiating. Julia’s brother, Ray Peterson, accompanied by Doris Moorhouse, sang “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “My God and I.” Burial was in Ostego Cemetery with John and Allen Grant, Bryan LaPlante, Bob, Todd and Don Lilledahl, Chaz Larson and Mike Belanger as pallbearers.

She was born in Bock, MN. February 16, 1909, the eighth of 10 children born to Charles and Hannah Peterson. She married Guy LaPlant of Elk River in 1930 and they raised six children on the Hazel Hurst Farm south of Elk River. After farming for many years, they moved to Cambridge in 1956 to operate the Nugget Cafe. In the following years they managed and cooked for Cambridge Health Care Center and the Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River. Julia loved being among friends, entertaining, eating out, traveling and her family. She was very active in her church, Eastern Star and Guardian Oaks High Rise. She will be remembered for her cooking (especially her lemon meringue pie and her rice pudding), her love for entertaining, her enjoyment of sending and receiving greeting cards and her love of people and of life. She will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; seven brothers and sisters; stepson, Palmer; stepdaughter, Marian; and great-granddaughter, Samantha.

She is survived by her stepdaughter, Ruth (Don) Grant of Minnesota Research Department. A celebration of her life is planned for April 15 at her home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace; parents, Blanche and Earl Eldred; daughter, Bonnie Faye; sisters, Doris and Ardith and brothers, Roger, Cleve and James.

She is survived by her children, Duane Wallin; Roger (Darla) Wallin; Sandra (Roger) Wallin; Betty (Paul) Thunstrom; Carroll (Nancy) Wallin; and Arlis Esnough; sisters, Lorraine, Jeanet and Patricia; brothers, Donald and Robert; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are preferred to the “U of M Foundation, 1300 South 2nd St., Minneapolis, MN. 55454.”
