Alice Carnewski 1907 - 1998, 91, Cromwell, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 29, 1907 in Cedar Point, Ill., to Alex and Agatha Schliauter. Her family moved to Wright when she was four-years-old. She married Peter Carnewski in November, 1926. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Peter of Duluth; one son, Leo (Irene) Carnewski of St. Paul; one daughter, Eleanor Carnewski of Duluth; one sister, Mary Norton of Duluth; sisters-in-law, Eileen Slaiter and Doris Schliauter; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two nephews and three nieces. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright. Pastor Matt Saarem will officiate. Burial will be in Wright Public Cemetery. Marion Gertrude Goman 1905 - 1998, 93, lifelong resident of Cloquet, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 in the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital and Convalescent Nursing Care Section. She was born on Sept. 8, 1905 to Frank and Anna (Sabel) Lauber in Cloquet. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1923. Marion married Harry Ellis Goman in August, 1928, in Cloquet. She worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell until her retirement. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1964; a daughter, Arlene in 1994 and a sister, Alvina Lauber. She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Goman of Maple Gove. Funeral service was at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11 in Barr Brothers Funeral Home, Cloquet. Pastor Marilee Olson officiated. Organist was Doris Sheetz. Soloist was Jim Sheetz. Taimi “Timms” P. Lindgren, born on Oct. 23, 1917 and Ernest “Ernie” E. Lindgren, born on March 13, 1917, in Tucson, Ariz., both formerly of Cloquet, died Sept. 16, 1998 in their own ways, and will be most remembered for their courage, humility and tenacity in overcoming life’s obstacles. Their commitment to each other lasted almost 60 years, a feat in itself. Despite major medical problems, they exemplified the vows of a Godly marriage and modeled that relationship for others. Their values, morals, and work ethics were an inspiration to all who knew them and because of this, they will continue to live on in memory. We will miss them greatly, but are relieved that they are no longer suffering. Survivors include, daughters, Rebecca (John) and Teira (Jerry); grandchildren, Julie and Steve; step grandchildren, Kevin and Shawn; great-grandson, Stevie; and many brothers and sisters. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet, immediately followed by inurnment in St. Matthew’s Cemetery and a gathering of family and friends at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, Cloquet. Jackie Sue Olsen, 51, Barnum, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Beloit, Wis. and grew up in Blackhoof Township. Jackie attended Carlton High School, graduating in 1965. On May 26, 1978, she married William Olsen in Sisseton, S.D. They lived in Barnum and Jackie had worked at Carlton County Human Services and Inner City Oil, both in Cloquet. Jackie enjoyed cooking, camping, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Sue Novacinski and her parents, Wayne and Iona (Johnson) Goldsmith. She is survived by her husband, Bill; a daughter, Rhonda Kay (Scott) Fitzgerald of Mahtowa; a stepson, Billy Jack (Rita) Olsen of Finlayson; three grandchildren, Zachary, Skylar and Shay; two step grandchildren, Amanda and Amber; two brothers, Wallace (Dorothy) Goldsmith of Ogilvie and Michael (Sharon) Goldsmith of Duluth; five sisters, Lowanda (Eddie) Bruley of Springfield, Ore., Kay (James) Dalton of Barnum, Lorraine (Ron) Simpson of Duluth, Beverly (Donald) Goenner of Duluth and Theresa Simiyu of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews. Laverne “Ole” Olson, 83, Bloomington. Laverne worked for Midcontinent and Braniff Airlines for 36 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother; sister and wife, Lorraine. He is survived by his devoted and loving special friend, Kathryn Holshouser; sister, Gaile Hendrickson of Carlton; and several nieces and nephews. Esther E. Haugdahl 1912 - 1998, 86, a lifelong resident of Scanlon/Cloquet, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998. She was born on Jan. 18, 1912 to Oscar and Louise (Peterson) Gullickson. She went to work at Conwed during WWII and worked there for 32 years. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Norman, Otto and William Gullickson and Victor Olson and sisters, Mary and Lillian Evenson, Julia Shovein and Ruth Gullickson. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Haugdahl of Cloquet; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Eugen Myhrvold and Berit Bakke; family of Norway and other relatives in Norway. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements by Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Alfred C. “Fritz” Holmes 1916 - 1998, 81, Cloquet, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998 at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was born on Oct. 28, 1916 in Cloquet to Evlyn and Albina (Boyer) Holmes. He resided in Cloquet most of his life, except from 1959 to 1969 when he lived in LaMirada, Calif. He graduated from Cloquet High School where he played baseball and basketball. He was the first person from Cloquet to be drafted into the Army for WWII where he served in the 951st Field Artillery Battalion. He received numerous medals, including the Bronze Star. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Bishop Welch Council 5132, and the Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3972 of Cloquet. His greatest love was sports and was involved in baseball most of his life. He was a player on the 1948 Wood Conversion State Championship Team. He coached and umpired little league baseball and was still employed as a groundskeeper for the Little Stores/Stage Stop softball field, which he help to construct. He retired as a custodian and lunchroom monitor for the Cloquet Middle School. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Arlene in April of 1998. He is survived by his son, Larry (Jenny) of Cloquet; one sister, Evelyn Johnson of LaMirada, Calif. and a grandson, Jason of Burnsville. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Rev. Father Kenton Sailstad officiating. Patrick A. Tollerud 1964 - 1998, 34, Cloquet, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 at the Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 7, 1964 in Cloquet. He was a lifelong Cloquet resident and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1982. He married Corina Ankrum on July 26, 1986 in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He owned and operated Pat’s Heating and Air Conditioning, Cloquet. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Cloquet Country Club and the Cloquet Hockey Association. He was a former Pee Wee, Bantam and Mini Mites hockey coach. Pat was a loving, caring family man and was very active in community service work and working with the youth. He loved golfing, hunting, fishing and hockey. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Bessie Clark. Gertrud “Gerrie” Rahnen 1914 - 1998, 84, Cloquet, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998 in the Carlton Nursing Home. She was born on June 2, 1914 in Germany to Felix and Therese Schilling. She came to the United States with her daughter, Christa, in December of 1955, sponsored by Doctors Puumala and Bepko. She worked at Northwest Paper, now Potlatch, retiring after 15 years. She is survived by her daughter, Christa (Edward) Enlund of Cloquet; her son, Peter (Julianne) Schilling of Schwerin, Germany; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of Germany. Memorial service will be today, Saturday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. in Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet. Arrangements by Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.

Clifford Peterson 1936 - 1998, 61, St. Cloud, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at St. Cloud Hospital. He was born on Nov. 3, 1935 in Chicago, Ill. to Clifford and Opal Ilene (Axtell) Peterson. He received his teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers College in Emporia, Kan., now Emporia State University. He attended Illinois Wesleyan, North Park College in Chicago, Ill. and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. He also received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Kansas. He married Joan Lavon Sevey on Dec. 28, 1958 at Savanna, Ill. She died on Jan. 27, 1993. He later married Nancy Ann Nelson in May of 1996 at Leonardville, Kan. They moved to St. Cloud in 1996. Clifford was a sales associate for Certified Laboratories from 1991 until 1995, when he operated the A.L.P.S., a youth center in Axtell, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Joan and a daughter, Adeana Perry, in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Nancy of St. Cloud; sons, Stephen Peterson of Seoul Korea and Scott Peterson of Wichita, Kan.; daughter, Amanda Bishop of Derby, Kan.; stepdaughter, Laura Webster of St. Louis, MO and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30 at the Axtell Untied Methodist Church in Axtell, Kan. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Axtell, Kan. Vivian “Beebo” C. Wuollet 1937 - 1998, 61, Cloquet, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. She was born on April 13, 1937 in Cloquet to the late Frank and Florence (Pineau) Whitebird. She worked as a home health aid for Min-No-Awa-Win Human Services at the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation for over 10 years. She was a lifelong Cloquet resident. She was a graduate of Cloquet High School. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. She was an avid bingo player. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Gail; two brothers, Frank and John Whitebird; and three sisters, Doris Tibbetts, Elizabeth Nelson and Phyllis Kultala. She is survived by her husband, William; sisters, Victoria (Harold) Flasch, Stella Berglund and Mary (Henry) Davis, all of Cloquet, Julia (Earl) Rennquist of Wrenshall and Karala St. Germaine of Duluth; three grandchildren, Blair, Gabriel and Kyle; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation was Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. Funeral mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church on Reservation Road followed by interment services at Old Holy Family Cemetery with Rev. Edgar J. Colombe 1913 - 1998, 84, Cloquet, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 in his home. He was born on Nov. 3, 1913 in Houghton, MI. He moved to Minnesota in 1920 and there he was raised by his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Scanlon of Proctor. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. Edgar served as a cook during WWII, serving the troops in his unit. He was a member of the Moose and the VFW of Proctor. Edgar worked for the Proctor Municipal, retiring after 30 years of service. Edgar enjoyed cooking and teaching people how to cook. He loved baseball and was extremely knowledgeable of John Wayne. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his children, Carolyn Shane of Proctor, Mary (John) Dahl of Excelsior, Bruce (Carol) Colombe of Duluth, Bonnie (Bob) Goodell of Proctor, Rick (Wendy) Colombe of Esko, Janice Korpi of Duluth, Mike (Cheryl) Colombe of Esko, Linda (Wade) Campbell of Duluth, Theresa Colombe and special friend, Chuck of Denver and Patrick Colombe of Minneapolis; a foster sister, Mary Jo “Josie” Berglund of Duluth; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Ronald Delano Hopp 1934 - 1998, 64, Cloquet, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998 in Cloquet. He was born on Oct. 7, 1934 in Franklin to Thelma (Clemens) and Emerick Hopp. He lived in Cloquet most of his life. He worked at Conwed for 28 years and then at Potlatch for the past 12 years. Ron was planning to retire on Jan. 4, 1999. He served his country in the U.S.A. Air Force from 1954 until 1957. Ron was an avid fisherman, making numerous trips with family and friends to Canada, as well as Northern Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Harold Hopp and father-in-law, Bob Hammitt. Milo A. Stillwell 1901 - 1998, 97, Cloquet, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on Oct. 5, 1901 in Pipestone. He attended Lake Hattie School. Milo and Dolly Shepard were married on May 22, 1922. He was a longtime logger/woodsman. He worked for Diamond Match in Orr/Cusson, retiring in 1966 after 41 years. He and Dolly owned Stillwell's Resort in Lake Kabetogama from 1966 until 1981. They returned to Cloquet in 1981. He was a charter member of the Minnesota Timber Producers Association, a member of the Carlton County Historical Society, the Itasca State Park Historical Restoration projects and a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Cloquet. He was an active volunteer at Pineview Apartments. Milo enjoyed building replicas of logging camps, which are on display in the Carlton County Historical Society. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly in 1987; six brothers; one sister and one granddaughter. He is survived by a son, Harris (Marjorie) Stillwell of Gary New Duluth; a brother, John Stillwell of Thomson; two grandchildren, Pamela (David) Keefe of Boston, Mass and Linda (Paul) Rue of Savannah, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Eden Rue, John Paul Rue, Matthew Keefe, Jessica Kesti, Benjamin Keefe, Emily Keefe and Chelsea Pellerin; great-great-grandchildren, Hannah Kesti, Jacob Kesti and Milo Rue. Arvo Koski 1915 - 1998 , 83, a lifelong resident of Cloquet, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998 in the Carlton Nursing Home. He was born on June 24, 1915 in Cloquet to Arvid and Maria (Jarvinen) Ylikoski. He married Stella LeVasseur on May 4, 1940. He was a first class machinist at Potlatch for 35 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Potlatch Quarter Century Club and the Eagles Club. Arvo loved being outside. He enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening. He also enjoyed woodworking and his favorite pastime was playing cribbage. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella in 1994; a son, Dale in March of 1998; his sister, Senja Ahlgren and his fishing partner of many years, Danny Glubka. He is survived by two sons, Dean (Sandy) of Loveland, Colo. and Steve (Kathy) of Bovey; a daughter, Sharon (Rich) Bushman of Lester Prairie; a daughter-in-law, Mary Koski of Bloomington; two sisters, Lyyli (Leo) Keskinen and Mae (Olli) Rautio, both of Cloquet; a brother, Olaf (Ferne) Ylikoski of Cloquet; special friend, Margaret of Anchorage, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Herman I. Terwey 1924 - 1998, 74, Esko, died peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998 at Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital surrounded by family members. He was born on May 18, 1924 in Melrose to the late Arnold and Agnes Terwey. He married Phyllis Evans on May 21, 1955 in Little Falls. He was a WWII Army Veteran and received the Bronze Star. He retired from the U.S. Steel Plant at its closing. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and would often go to Montana on hunting trips with friends. His wonderful sense of humor and helping hand will be missed by all those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis in 1978; brothers, Henry, Joe and Alphonse; and sisters, Alvina, Antoinette and Veronica. Glen Thomas “Oscar” Meyer 1956 - 1998, 42, Esko, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998 in Duluth. He was born on April 10, 1956 in Melose to Roman and Adella (Soenneker) Meyer. He attended school in Esko. He joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He attended Staples Vo-Tech for heavy equipment operator and diesel mechanics. He was a very active outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and the Boundary Waters. He worked for S&J Truck Repair, Duluth. He was preceded in death by his father, Roman Meyer in 1993. He is survived by his mother, Adella of Esko; his daughter, Jill Meyer of Cloquet; six sisters, Lynn Goman of Cloquet, Mary Meyer of Minneapolis, Karen (Craig) Schultz of Columbia Heights, Karla (Warren) Stenson of Cromwell, Mona (David) Kraft of Mounds View and Julie (Tim) Chelstrom of Duluth; a very special friend, Clara Craig of Superior, Wis. and her son, Kenneth. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel, Cloquet, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Father Gerald LaPatka officiating. Dr. Gustaf Jarl Olson 1919 - 1998, Gustaf Jarl Olson was born on Jan. 14, 1919 in Butte, Mont. In 1920, his family moved to Cloquet where his father practiced veterinary medicine. Gustaf graduated from Cloquet High School in 1937. He attended Duluth Junior College and then Iowa State University where he graduated with a DVM degree in 1943. He married Marjorie Sundberg in 1942. He built the Detroit Lakes Animal Hospital in 1951. He practiced veterinary medicine in the area until his retirement in 1985. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt and fish. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jarl and Helmi (Backlund) Olson. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie; daughter, Cathie (Robert) Prunty of Inver Grove Heights; son, Jarl (Marcia) Olson of Hastings; grandchildren, Erik, Kirsten and Stefan Olson, Travis and T.J. (Thomas Jarl) Prunty; brother, Albert (Dorothy) Olson of Owatonna; sister, Anna Marie (Phil) Olin of Cloquet. November 11, 1998 • The Pine Knot

Alice M. Oswald, 74, Harlingen, Texas, formerly of Minneapolis and of Cloquet. She was a veteran of WWII in the U.S. Navy WAVE. She is survived by her husband, Jerome; son, Larry of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Jerilyn Anders (Bo) of Elizabeth, Colo.; grandchildren, Kimberly and Dustin Oswald and Alison Anders; sister, Helen Faue (Alfred); brother-in-law, Dale Oswald (Jackie); and many nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held in Glen Haven Cemetery, Crystal, today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. Arrangements by Kapala-Glodek Malone.
