Richard R. Mitton
Richard Ramsey Mitton of Champlin, MN, died at age 77, on August 2, 1997, in Little Falls, MN.
A Memorial Service was held August 9 at Longville Community Church, Longville, MN.
He was born May 6, 1920, in Pillager Township. He was wounded and received a Purple Heart for his service in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He received his master’s degree at the U of M and taught at various high schools and worked in the Job Corps Training Program. He loved to camp, fish and canoe, his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Genevieve; two sons, Paul (Terry) of Elk River, MN, and David (Mona) of Forest Lake, MN; one daughter, Lois of Champlin; five grandchildren, Troy, Becky, Andra, Rachel and Logan; one great-granddaughter, Casey; brothers, Eldridge (Al) of Hackensack, MN; and, Duane of Marion, VA. He was also “Papa” to Ka, Vanessa, Jason and Senetra.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Eunice Mitton.

Cecilia J. Scepaniak
Cecilia J. Scepaniak, age 85, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 2, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held August 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls.
Cecilia J. Scepaniak was born November 17, 1911, in Little Falls to the late Phillip and Mary (Trafas) Maciej. She grew up in Little Falls. She was united in marriage to Frank C. Scepaniak on June 2, 1931, at St. Adelbert’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. After their marriage the couple lived on the Scepaniak family farm until 1949 when they moved to Little Falls. In 1952 they purchased a farm in Little Falls Township and farmed. Following her husband’s death on July 25, 1993, Cecilia continued to live on the farm with her daughter and in 1955 she and her daughter moved to the Courtyard Apartments in Little Falls where she resided until her death. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Claudette Scepaniak of Little Falls; sisters, Mary Rose Florian of St. Paul, MN, Albina Deering of Little Falls; sisters-in-law, Frances Dyrland of Corning, IA, Helen Lukens of Little Falls; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister, Catherine Getchell.
Casketbearers were Bill Johnson, Sr., Bill Johnson, Jr., Thomas Zak, Byron Dyrland, Thomas Green and Troy Getchell.

Dolores Kastonek
Dolores Lucille Kastonek, age 67, a resident of Nashwauk, MN, died August 9, 1997, at Bethesda Medical Center, St. Paul, MN.
Funeral services were held August 14 in Bethany Lutheran Church in Cushing, MN. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Cushing.
Dolores was born July 26, 1930, in Philbrook, MN, the daughter of Carl and Ethel Anderson. She was raised in Cushing where she attended Bethany Lutheran Church. She married Lester Kastonek May 7, 1949, in Little Falls, MN. They moved to Nashwauk in 1950 where they raised their family. She was a loving mother and homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Lester; one daughter, Karen Skraba and husband Gene of Nashwauk; three sons, Al and wife Carol of Pengilly, MN, Les and wife Jane of Nashwauk and Gary of Nashwauk; two brothers, Gene Anderson and wife Margaret of Geneva, FL, and Richard Anderson and wife Arlys of Grand Rapids, MN; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Creston C. Peterson
Creston C. Peterson, age 59, a resident of Long Prairie, MN, died August 8, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
The funeral was August 12 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Father Mark Stang officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.
Creston was born May 5, 1938, in Roosevelt, MN, to Carl and Hazel (Dollarhide) Peterson. He grew up and attended school in the Roosevelt area. He married Mardy Exe, August 7, 1982. He was a lead lineman foreman for Illinois, Annie Chiantera of Blaine, MN, Vicky Sherburne of Blaine, Delores Tverberg of Minneapolis, MN, Barb Riesner of Avon, MN, Don of Avon, James of Avon, Joe of Avon and Sally Imgrund of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother (Harry); two sisters (Lucille Streit and Mary Wenderski).
Pallbearers were Russ, Darin and Ember Cherne, Mike, Adam and Rachael Tschida and Amanda Anderson.

H.L. Michaelis
H. L. “Mike” Michaelis, age 95, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 10, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were held August 13 at Peace Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Steven C. Josephson officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery.
H.L. “Mike” was born May 1, 1902, in Green Prairie Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Erich and Emma (Bigalke) Michaelis. He grew up and attended country school in Green Prairie Township. Mike then attended business school in Little Falls. He relocated to South Dakota and worked at a few different banks during the early 1920s. He moved to Minneapolis, MN, and managed an A&P Grocery Store in the Twin Cities. Mike was united in marriage to Anne Benson in Minneapolis. The couple came to live in Little Falls in 1934 and Mike managed an A&P Grocery Store for many years. Anne Michaelis passed away in 1951. Mike was united in marriage to Gertrude F. Kuffel in 1953 in Little Falls. He then owned a National Brands Grocery Store in Little Falls until it was destroyed by fire in 1960. He worked as the Little Falls City Clerk from 1960 until retiring in 1973. Mike enjoyed Twins baseball, hunting and fishing. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Little Falls, Masonic Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M. and was a former charter member of the Pinnacle Club.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude F. Michaelis of Little Falls; sons, Dr. Duane Michaelis and wife Carol of Anoka, MN, Loring Michaelis and wife Nancy of Churchville, PA, and Leon Benson of Suisun City, CA; daughters, Donna Braun and husband Steve of Minnetonka, MN, and Ruth Anne Latkoff of Roswell, GA; grandchildren, Kate and John Michaelis, Lynne Lindstrom, David Michaelis, Stephanie Hart, Nicole Michaelis, Anna and Michael Braun and Chuck and Dawn Latkoff and great-grandchildren, Ryan and Niki Michaelis and Ashley and Katelyn Hart.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne; parents; brothers, Erick and Waldo Michaelis and sisters, Bertha Helmerick and Wallie Michaelis.
Pallbearers were John Michaelis, Pat Kuffel, Chuck Latkoff, Chuck Lindstrom and Len and Steve Braun.

Albert Schindler
Albert “Bud” Schindler, age 81, a resident of Lake Shamineau, MN, died August 8, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were August 12 in the Faith Lutheran Church in Staples, MN with Reverend Stephen Sveom officiating. Burial was in the Scandia Valley Cemetery.
Albert Phillip Schindler was born on July 15, 1916, in Peoria, IL, son of the late Albert and Ellen (Stoker) Schindler. He graduated from Manual High School in Peoria. He was united in marriage to Lillian Tomford on August 6, 1937, in St. Charles, MO. Following their marriage they lived in Bartonville, IL, then moved to Richfield, MN, where they lived until their retirement. Following their retirement in 1977, they moved to Lake Shamineau. Albert was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Staples and VFW Post #9073 in Randall. He was very active in Senior Citizens Clubs in the Motley/Cushing/ Randall area. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII. Albert enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing.
Survivors include a son, Doug (Kay) Schindler of Moorhead, MN; a daughter, Virginia (Jack) Bergerson of Bloomington, MN; four grandchildren, Kent and Jay Schindler, Steve Bergerson, and Karen McDonald; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Gannon McDonald; two brothers, Orville Schindler of Bartonville, IL, and Harold Schindler of Longmont, CO; two sisters, Berniece Hoogerwerf of Bartonville, IL, and Lois Jones of Peoria, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lillian, in 1990. Casketbearers were Kent and Jay Schindler, Steve Bergerson, Liam McDonald, Bill Hoogerwerf and Hank Wahl.

Marion Brenny
Marion Brenny, age 94, a resident of Minneapolis, MN, died August 8, 1997, in Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian Burial was August 11, 1997, at the Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis, with Father Dale Korogi officiating. There were also services at St. Michael’s Church in Buckman, MN. Burial was at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Buckman.
Marion was born January 28, 1903, in Mayhew Lake, MN. She married Joseph Brenny at Annunciation Church in Mayhew Lake on June 13, 1922. Marion was a member of the Basilica of St. Mary for 30 years. She was a charter member of Care Guild and Omega Seniors, she was a long- time volunteer at nursing homes, was chairperson election judge, and was an active member of the D.F.L. and Eagles Auxiliary.
Survivors include daughters, Arleene Meyer, Audrey Glynn and husband Robert, Kathleen Baron and husband Henry; a son, Douglas and wife, Jeanne; a daughter-in-law, Donna Brenny; 20 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren; six Glynn stepgrandchildren and families, four brothers and six sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; and a son, Robert.
Casketbearers were Bruce, Bradley and Bill Baron, Bryan and Joseph Brenny, and Charles Meyer.

Marian J. Keeney
Marian J. Keeney, age 56, a resident of Rice, MN, died August 18, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were held August 21 at Dingmann Family Funeral Chapel in Sauk Rapids, MN with Rev. Donald Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Langola Cemetery at a later date.
Marian was born February 18, 1941, in Hinckley, MN to Nels and Blanche (Eastling) Bjerke. She married Richard Keeney on April 12, 1964, in Rochester, MN. She lived in the Rochester/Hastings area until she moved to the St. Cloud area in 1981. She was a bookkeeper for All-State Leasing and Landy Packing in St. Cloud. She also managed apartment buildings for INH Property Manage-ment in the St. Cloud area for the past six years. She was a member of the St. Cloud VFW Post #428 Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Richard of Rice; and is mother and mother-in-law to, Connie and David Efraimson of Rice; Anthony Keeney of St. Cloud. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Dorcas Bunnell of Cambridge, MN, Jeanette Moffatt of Hinckley, Evelyn Taylor of Dexter, MN, Albert Bjerke of Webster, WI, Gerald Bjerke of Webster, Irene Schlatter of Silver Bay, MN, Arnold Bjerke and Velora Handahl both of Rochester, MN; grandsons, Drew and Guy Efraimson and Scott and Richard Keeney. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Honorary pallbearers were Albert, Gerald and Arnold Bjerke, Caryl Moyar, Jim Popilek and Ronald Keeney.

Violet L. Pugh
Violet L. Pugh, age 81, a resident of Little Falls, MN died August 16, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. Funeral services were held August 19 at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Todd H. Charles officiating. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.
Violet L. Pugh was born on November 16, 1915, in Douglas County, MN to the late Lawrence and Jessie (Richardson) Craine. She grew up in Clough Township and attended country school there. She was united in marriage to John W. Pugh on December 12, 1933, in Little Falls. The couple lived in the Lincoln area and farmed for a few years. In 1943 they relocated to Clough Township. In 1952 the couple moved to a farm near Randall, MN. In 1980 the couple came to live in Little Falls. Violet was a devoted housewife and mother. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, sewing and gardening. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Little Falls.
Survivors include her sons, Robert Pugh of Cushing, MN, Lyle Pugh and wife Shirley of Little Falls, Wayne Pugh and wife Phyllis of Dayton, MN, Jerry Pugh and wife Mary Ann of Little Falls, and Larry Pugh and wife Joann of Fort Ripley, MN; daughters, Betty Billing and husband Chester of Little Falls, Jeanette James and husband Joseph of Little Falls, Shirley Japp and husband Richard of Cushing, and Sandra Weber and husband Tom of St. Cloud, MN; sister, Betty Mueller of Woodenville, WA; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John (December 31, 1995); parents; daughter-in-law, Sharen Pugh; brother, Gerald Craine; sisters, Gladys Erickson and Delpha Hallgren; grandsons, Robert and Richard Japp and great-grandson, Trevor Pugh.
Pallbearers were Jim and Gus Japp, Jason, Jamie, Kenny and Mark Pugh and Mike Billing.
