Ava Burgwald
Ava D. Burgwald, age 85, a resident of Brainerd, MN, died June 30, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were held July 3 at Brainerd’s Bethel Lutheran Church with Pastors Bob Twiton and LeRoy Nevin officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.
Ava was born November 8, 1912, in Meade County, SD, to Frank and Cora (Purdy) McClintock. She was a lifetime area resident and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Billy Burgwald of Brainerd and Dennis Johnson of Colorado; one stepson, Robert Burgwald and wife Barb of Brainerd; one daughter, Judy Meyer and husband Gary of Blaine, MN; one stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Stearns and husband Harold of Brainerd; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eva Cox of Limon, CO; and one brother, Bob McClintock of Rockford, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband William, three brothers and one sister.

Elizabeth Weber
Elizabeth Weber, age 99, a resident of Pierz, MN, died June 30, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.
Funeral services were held July 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Elizabeth was born November 19, 1898, in New Ulm, MN, to the late John and Theresia (Portner) Dietz. She was united in marriage to John S. Weber January 10, 1922, in New Ulm. The couple moved to Pierz in February, 1929. She moved to the Alverna Apartments in Little Falls in 1984, and to St. Otto’s Care Center in 1993 where she resided until her death. She enjoyed quiltmaking, gardening, flowers and letter writing. She was secretary of the Catholic Aid Society for 30 years. She cooked for the Catholic schools of Pierz. She was a 4-H leader. She was a member of Christian Women and the Catholic Aid Society. She was a Grand Marshal for the Oktoberfest parade in Pierz in 1994.
Survivors include her sons, John and Naomi Weber of Salem, OR, Leo and Rosetta Weber of Pierz, Ted and Arlene Weber of Pierz, Bernard and Frances Weber of St. Cloud, MN, Roger and Mary of Sauk Rapids, MN, and Stephen and Francia of Roseville, MN; daughters, Mary Konen and husband Alfred of Little Falls, and, Theresa Zenner and husband Donald of Little Falls; 33 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John in 1970; infant son, Andrew in 1923; three brothers, Otto, Albert and Alfred Dietz and sisters, Eleanora Gulden and Annie Schreiner.
Pallbearers were grandchildren. Lector was Kevin Zenner.

Alice V. Bryniarski
Alice V. Bryniarski, age 78, a resident of Randall, MN, died July 4, 1998, at her home in Parker Township, Morrison County, MN, just west of Randall where she resided until her death. Alice was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Randall and enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, crocheting and her flowers.
Survivors include her husband, Fred; son, James Bryniarski and wife Marilyn of Browerville; daughter, Darlene Hegg and husband David of Randall, MN; sister, Angeline Seith of Milwaukee, WI; brothers, Pete Baron and wife Marlyn of Osakis, MN; Eddie Baron of Browerville; five grandchildren and six-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joe, Sam, John and Frank Baron and a sister, Anna Kensy.
Casketbearers were Janet Retka, Rick Hegg, Sandy Keller, Joe Brynierski, Cindy Miller and Ed Kensy.

Peter Malek
Peter Malek, age 79, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died July 3, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were held July 6, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father LeRoy Kremer officiating. Burial was at Belle Prairie Cemetery.
Peter was born May 31, 1919, in Foley, MN, to John and Katherine (Ratke) Malek. His many careers included positions with Northern Pipe in Chicago, IL., Brunswick/ Larson Boats, and the Burlington Northern Railroad. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 as an Armed Guard Gunner on a Merchant Marine vessel and traveled around the world seven times. Pete was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife Adeline; sons, Steven and wife Kathy of Oconomowoc, WI, Eldon and wife Lois of Fort Ripley, MN; daughters, Audrey and husband Paul Miller of Dellwood, MN and Linda and husband William Serie of Little Falls; five grandsons, William, Steven, and Douglas Serie, and Jacob and Nathan Malek; two step-granddaughters, Stacy and Christy Schwingham-mer; and great-granddaughter, Tristen (Zimmerman) Serie; brothers, Chester of Crystal, MN; and twin brother, Paul of Menahga; sisters, Mary DeRoss of Dunn and Rev. Allen Clark Harris officiating. Burial followed at the Foster Cemetery near Cove.
She was born on November 30, 1904, to William and Rilla (Crane) Ross in West Union, IA. She attended school in big Lake, MN. She married Arthur Hicks on September 3, 1924, in Monticello, MN. To this union they were blessed with three children. The couple moved to the area south of Onamia in the fall of 1940 and later moved to live on Mille Lacs Lake. Vonnie enjoyed embroidering, sewing, crocheting, cooking, and she loved dogs.
Survivors include her two daughters, Betty Hohnwaldt of Onamia and Marlene Kunst of Milaca, MN; eight grandchildren, Twelve great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; also by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur; son, Kenneth; two great-grandchildren, Cathy Jones and James Gustafson; one sister; and two brothers.
Casketbearers included Archie Jones, Gary Jones, David Jones, Randy Hohnwaldt, John Jones, and Gerald Gustafson.

Mamie M. Johnson
Mamie M. Johnson, age 93, a resident of Staples, MN, died July 4, 1998, at the Greater Staples Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 8 in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Staples with Father Lauren Germann officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery.
Mamie M. Johnson was born on May 1, 1905, in Moran Township, daughter of the late Steve and Clara (Knosalla) Kurpius. She grew up and attended school near Staples. She then moved to Chicago, IL, where she worked for Van Buren Book Company. She was united in marriage to Walter L. Johnson on May 14, 1929, in Fargo, ND. Following their marriage, Mamie worked for Dr. Slingsby as a dental assistant. They moved to Hillsboro, ND, and then to Staples, where she worked as a nurse’s aide for several years. Mamie was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a church volunteer for many years. Mamie was devoted to her parents, brothers, and sisters.
Survivors include a sister, Lorraine (Amiel) Randel of Buffalo, MN; a brother, Edward (Majorie) Kurpius of Ada, MN; a special nephew Jerry (Dolores) Kurpius of Winter Haven, FL; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter in 1989; three brothers and a sister.

Margaret A. (Kettlewell) Hill
Margaret A. (Kettlewell) Hill, age 66, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died July 5, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were held July 9 at the First United Church in Little Falls with the Rev. John Longley and Rev. Loren Olson officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.
Margaret A. Hill was born March 17, 1932, in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Ralph and Leona (Keeler) Kettlewell. She grew up in Sauk Centre, MN, graduating from Sauk Centre High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1950. While in school, Margaret was active in Girls State and state speech. In 1951 she was Butter Queen in Sauk Centre and an Aquatennial Princess. She attended Hamline University in St. Paul, MN, and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1955 as a medical technolist. Margaret served her practicum as a medical technologist in Duluth, MN. She was united in marriage to James H. Hill on June 20, 1953, at the Methodist Church in Sauk Centre. Following their marriage, Margaret and Jim lived in Belle Plaine, MN, Pelican Rapids, MN, Bertha, MN, returning to Pelican Rapids and moving to Little Falls in 1969. She worked as a medical technologist in Shakopee, MN, Wadena, MN, and St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls. Margaret also worked as a real estate agent for Century 21 in Little Falls for a short time, was a travel agent and manager of Dubow Travel Agency in Little Falls as well as being a homemaker. She was a member of First United Church in Little Falls where she served aslay-leader and representative for the Western Division of First United Church,was a member of the First United Choir, a member of the AAUW - American Association of Univer-sity Women, TOPS,the Friends of the Little Falls Carnegie Library, delivered meals on wheels and served Share-A-Meal in Little Falls. Margaret enjoyed and loved spending time with her grandchildren, playing Bridge, reading (especially mystery novels), traveling, knitting, cross-stitching, walking and biking.
Survivors include her husband, James “Jim” Hill; son, Jeff Hill and wife Christine of Big Lake, MN; daughters, Julie Johnson and husband Steve of Waverley, IA, Susan Huemann and husband Jay of Champlin, MN, Marjorie Maurer and husband Michael of Atwater, MN; brother, Jack Kettlewell and wife Bobbie of Brooklyn Center, MN; sister, Janice Quelland and husband Ray of Dallas, TX; step-sister, Vivian Boehne of Grand Forks, ND; and grandchildren, Jeremiah and Jennifer Hill of Big Lake, Renae and Eric Johnson of Waverly, IA, Anne and Emily Huemann of Champlin,and Brooks and Luke Maurer of Atwater.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Fred Walker; and step-brothers, Cliff, Charlie, Ray, Hank and Russell Walker.
Honorary pallbearers were MaryAnn Force, Faye Siegle, Virginia Berguson, Louise Poliseno, Mary Jean Filippi, Ardie Coenen, Mona Steinke, Elaine Magnuson, and Bob and Nancy Olson.
Casketbearers were Phil Force, Al Siegle, Dick Berguson, John Poliseno, Louie Filippi, Odel Coenen, Tom Steinke, Dale Magnuson and Jeremiah Hill.

Carl E. Johnson
Carl E. Johnson, age 71, a resident of Cushing, MN, died July 3, 1998, at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN.
Funeral services were held July 6 at Cushing Baptist Church in Cushing, MN, with Pastor Mark Erickson officiating. Burial was in the Cushing Union Cemetery with military rites provided by the Randall V.F.W. Post 9073.
Carl Edwin Johnson was born on October 2, 1926, in Cushing Township, Morrison County, to the late Oscar and Rosella (Cramer) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm in Cushing Township and attended country school. He served in the U.S. Army from March, 1945, to December,1946, in the occupation of Korea after World War II. Following his service, he came home to the family farm and farmed. He was united in marriage to Betty L. Curtis on November 28, 1948, at the family home in Cushing Township. The couple made their home in Riverdale, ND, for five years where he worked on the Garrison Dam. They then moved to Aurora, MN, where he worked in construction for two years. In 1957, they moved back to the family farm in Cushing Township and farmed until his retirement in 1992. Carl was very active, having served for many years as a clerk on the Cushing Township board, Randall Co-op Creamery Board, Morrison County Farm Bureau and Randall Shippers Association. He also served in various positions in the Cushing Baptist Church where he was a member. He enjoyed farming, traveling and visiting with his many friends and family.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Johnson of Cushing; daughter, Valerie Quiel and husband, Dave of Brooklyn Park, MN; son, Kevin Johnson of Columbia Heights, MN; sisters, Mildred Borgstrom and husband, Irving of Pillager, MN; and Audrey Pritchard and husband, John of Little Falls; brothers, Elmer Johnson and wife, Ardelle of Cushing,Ervin Johnson and wife, Jeanne of Fridley, MN, Marvin Johnson and wife Janice of Fridley,and David Johnson and wife Gerry of Spring Lake Park, MN; grandchildren, Philip, Jeremy and Kimberly Quiel and four great-grandchildren.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edith Dobson.
Pallbearers were Philip, Jeremy and Kimberly Quiel, Dale Dalquist, John Rinio and Don Wolbeck.
