Gertrude ‘Gerty’ M. Marshik
Gertrude “Gerty” M. Marshik, age 87, a resident of Pierz, MN, died April 10, 1999, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 13 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with the Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Gertrude “Gerty” Marie Marshik was born November 10, 1911, near Andover, SD, to the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Dylla) Zimny. She grew up and attended school in Royalton, MN. She was united in marriage to Leonard “Leo” H. Marshik on May 22, 1935. The couple raised their family and farmed near Pierz until Leo’s death on February 15, 1961. Following his death Gertrude worked for several years at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz in physical therapy. In 1989, Gertrude sold the family farm and moved to the city of Pierz. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, Christian Mothers and volunteered for many community activities. In 1990 she received a Recognition Award for Outstand-ing Service to the Pierz Commun-ity by the St. Joseph and St. Mary’s Catholic Aid Association. Gertrude was devoted to her family and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening, crossword puzzles and playing scrabble.
Survivors include her daughters, Lois Boser and husband Daniel of Pierz, Ruth Johnson and husband Douglas of Fargo, ND, Doris Akins and husband Bruce of Watertown, MN; sons, David and wife Valerie of Plainview, MN, Gary and wife Mona of Canton, SD; brother Sylvester Zimny and wife Elaine of Royalton; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Stephen, Isidore, Jerome and Ignatious Zimny and sisters, Elizabeth and Mary Zimny.
Anna Carlson
Anna Sophia Carlson, age 92, died April 12, 1999, at the Mille Lacs Hospital.
Funeral services were held April 15 at the Onamia Christian and Missionary Alliance Church with Rev. Tom Franklin officiating. Interment followed at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Milaca, MN.
Anna was born September 19, 1906, to Oscar and Anna Nelson on September 19, 1906. Her parents moved to a farm by Milaca when she was still a child. She had two sisters, Alice, a younger sister, and Esther, an older sister. She married Edgar Carlson in February of 1929. In the beginning of their marriage, they farmed near Milaca. In 1938, they moved to Onamia, MN, where they built a home and a farm and raised their four children. Anna was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Onamia. She was also a faithful prayer warrior.
Survivors include her son, Mack and wife Beverly of Raymond, MN; three daughters, Shirley Klous of Onamia, Adele and husband Phil Anderson of Arden Hills, MN, and Betsy R. Payne of White Bear Lake, MN; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Salgren of Milaca; a special friend, Bernice Wolf, who has cared for her for 12 years; also many nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar; sister, Esther Christenson; two sons-in-law, Larry Klous and William Payne. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Irene Andres
Irene Emma Andres, age 56, a resident of Missoula, MT, died April 3, 1999, at her home, after an incredibly courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Mass of Resurrection was held April 7 at Pope John XXIII Catholic Church in Missoula. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Irene was born June 23, 1942, in Royalton, MN, to Lampert Cornelius and Meta Hagen. She graduated from Little Falls High School, Little Falls, MN, in 1960 and received her nursing degree from St. Gabriel’s School of Nursing in Little Falls. After marrying Terry Andres at St. James Church in Randall, MN, on October 12, 1963, Irene worked for one year in St. Gabriel’s Hospital. In 1964 she had her first child, Shawn, in Little Falls and shortly after she moved to Missoula where she worked at St. Patrick Hospital in the obstetrics department until her second son, Tom, was born in 1966. During the next 11 years, Irene gave life to eight more children: Becky, Shelly, Jerry, Jesse, Julie, Nate, Nikki and Holly. She dearly loved her 10 children, dedicating her entire life and soul to them. Irene enthusiastically supported all her children in every endeavor. Irene was the true epitome of motherhood. She also opened her home and heart to teenagers in need. Her doors were always open. Irene was a giver. She gave to everyone, never expecting anything in return. She had an incredible gift for discovering the good in all people. Irene’s love touched everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her unconditional compassion reached all: both young and old. She cared for preschoolers in her day care. She began working at Hillside Manor nursing home in 1986 and continued there as the charge nurse until her disease forced her to retire in 1997. Her sincere love for nursing home residents was expressed each day through her genuine smile and warm hug. Irene was an integral part of the Missoula community. She was actively involved in both FFA and 4-H. She was a 4-H leader and the treasurer of the FFA Alumni for many years. Irene was an active member of Pope John XXIII Catholic Church and for many years taught religious education.
Survivors include her husband, Terry Andres; her children, Shawn and Laura Andres, Tom and Shelley Andres, Becky and Lanny DeHaan, Shelly and Erich Bolz, Jerry Andres, Jesse Andres, Julie and Shon Simpson, Nate and Jen Andres, Nikki Andres and Holly Andres; seven grandchildren, Morgan, Kolton, Neela, Mandy, Auston, Jon and Ruger; her brother and his wife, Alvin and Mary Hagen and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and brother, Erven Hagen. Her mother passed away the day following Irene’s death. Together, they will make the journey to heaven. Irene was dearly loved and will be incredibly missed.
Barbara Storlie
Barbara Ann Storlie, age 61, a resident of Hastings, MN, died April 7, 1999, at the Regina Medical Center in Hastings.
Funeral services were held April 10 at the United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Reverend Jeffrey Utecht officiating. Burial was at the Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings.
Barbara was born February 15, 1938, in Farmington, MN, to Caroline (Hyde) and Gordon L. Wilson. Barbara married Dale Storlie on August 3, 1957, at the United Methodist Church of Hastings. She had been a licensed practical nurse. She liked going up north to the cabin, knitting, canning and card playing and also enjoyed the ladies bowling league.
Survivors include husband, Dale Storlie of Hastings; mother, Caroline Wilson of Hastings; sons, James (Robin) Storlie of Little Falls, MN, Dennis (Kala) Storlie of Modesto, CA, Alan (Sandy) Storlie of Hastings, Mark (Heidi) Storlie of Hastings and Mike (Jodi) Storlie of Hastings; daughter, Michele Storlie of Hastings; sisters, Nancy (Jim) Freiermuth of Hastings, Jackie (Larry) Walker of Hastings, and Sandi (Jim) Molitor of Little Falls; brothers, DuWayne Wilson of Hastings and Paul (Lori) Wilson of Hastings and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon L. Wilson; brothers, Jim Wilson and Gordon R. Wilson and nephew, Jim Freiermuth.
Pallbearers were her children, James, Dennis, Alan, Mark, Michele and Mike.
Monica Hennek
Monica Hennek, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of St. Anna, MN, died April 13, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center.
Funeral services were held April 16 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Monica was born May 7, 1909, in St. Wendel Township, Stearns County, MN, to Joseph and Rose (Scegura) Symanietz. She married Walter Hennek on November 19, 1929, in Sobieski, MN. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna. She was a foster mother for homeless children in Stearns County for 10 years and she also provided a foster home for veterans for 10 years. She and her husband owned and operated the Farm Resort and Campgrounds on Pelican Lake for 40 years.
Survivors include her husband of Little Falls; daughters, Mary Ann Matros of Isle, MN, and Florence Duke of Stillwater, MN; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-stepgrandchildren and brothers and sisters, Veronica Campagna of San Mateo, CA, Florence Sobiech of Little Falls, Harry Bieniek of San Mateo, CA, Damus Bieniek of San Mateo, Edward Bieniek of Little Falls and Richard Bieniek of Little Falls.
She was preceded in death by a son, Damus; brothers, John Symanietz, Andrew Symanietz, Tony Tieniek and Eugene Bieniek and one sister, Mary Beardsley.
Meta Hagen
Meta “Matie” Hagen, age 91, a resident of Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls, MN, formerly of Darling Township, died April 4, 1999, at the Lutheran Care Center.
Funeral services were held at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls on April 13 with Pastor Martin Langemo officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.
Meta was born May 29, 1907, in Milbank, SD, to the late Thomas J. and Emma (Linderkamp) Hansen. The family later moved to a farm near Royalton, MN. She was united in marriage to Lambert C. Hagen on September 6, 1937, at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls. The couple made their home on farms near Royalton and also near Little Falls. Meta was employed for several years in the laundry department at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Survivors include son, Alvin Hagen and wife Mary of Blaine, MN; son-in-law, Terry Andres of Missoula, MT; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lambert C. Hagen; daughter, Mrs. Terry Andres (Irene); son, Ervin; two brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers were Timothy, Mark, Sara and Chris Hagen.
Alfred Ebnet
Alfred R. Ebnet, a resident of Holdingford, MN, died April 10, 1999 at his home.
Funeral services were held April 14 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Alfred was born in Krain Township, Stearns County, to Frank and Elizabeth (Vos) Ebnet. He married Regina Muyres on May 15, 1929, at St. Mary’s; she died June 29, 1974. He married Walburga Barhorst on November 9, 1974, at St. Mary’s. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford and also a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Aid Society, 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus St. Isidore Council #9307, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Queen of Peace General Assembly #3628, Crosier Apostulate and was a recipient of the Bishops Medal. He was also a member of the Holdingford Senior Citizens and prepared meals for the senior citizens for 10 years. He was treasurer of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Aid Society. He farmed in the Holdingford area for 40 years, retiring in 1968 and moving to Holdingford. He was a past member of the Holding Town Board, Farmers Shipping Association, Coop Creamery, telephone board, local Red Cross and local school board.
Survivors include his wife of Holdingford; children, Cyril of Albany, MN, Alice Maine of Avon, MN, Lloyd of Albany, Jerome of Holdingford, Carol Waldoch of Little Falls, MN, and Linus of Albany; stepchildren, Louella Hechtel of St. Cloud, MN, Irene Kostreba of Elk River, MN, Ralph Barhorst of St. Stephen, MN, Marie Hoppe of Holdingford and Bernard Barhorst of Holdingford; 29 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 18 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-stepgrandchildren; brothers and sisters, Roman of Long Prairie, MN, Joseph of Holdingford, John of Holdingford, Elmer of Holdingford, Clara Donnelly of Holdingford and Anna “Lena” Domenico of Holdingford.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; brothers, Leo “Curly”, Ambrose “Lefty”, George, Nicholas and Raymond; sister, Mary Zeis and one granddaughter.
James Packert
James P. Packert, age 39, a resident of Pierz, MN, died April 12, 1999 at his home.
Services were held April 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Popple Creek, with Rev. Harvey Ehlers officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
James Packert was born November 25, 1959, in St. Cloud, MN, to George A. Packert and Betty (Kiekow) Harding. He lived in the St. Cloud area his entire life and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Popple Creek. He was a painter and finisher for Britz Store Equipment in Buckman, MN.
Survivors include son and daughter, Justin and Kristen Packert of Sauk Rapids, MN; mother, Betty Harding of Sauk Rapids; sisters and brothers-in-law Connie and James Stanley of Sauk Rapids, Pat and Curt Smelter of Foley, MN, Kathy and Gerald Jacquemart of Foley, and Linda and Roger Gavanda of Foley; and special companion, Marilyn Girtz of Sauk Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his father, George A. Packert, on January 15, 1982; and stepfather, Don Harding, on January 27, 1998.
Clara A. Petersen
Clara A. Petersen, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died April 13, 1999 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held April 18 at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Reverend Sanna B. Reinholtzen officiating. Burial was at the Elmdale Lutheran Cemetery.
Clara was born on January 21, 1911, in Swan River Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late George and Mary (Rasmusen) Wolters. She went to school in District 25 for eight grades and boarded in Little Falls for the ninth grade. She was united in marriage to Philip O. Petersen on August 28, 1928 at her home in Swan River Township. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in Swan River Township northeast of Elmdale, from 1928 thru 1956. They rented the farm to son James and acquired a hardware store, Petersen Hardware, in Randall, MN. In 1972, she moved to an apartment in Little Falls. She has been a resident of the Lutheran Care Center since January 1994. Clara loved to make quilts. She made them for her family and church missionaries. She loved knitting mittens for everyone. She also enjoyed playing cards and games, especially Scrabble. She was the family historian, keeping scrap books of family events such as kindergarten, graduations, weddings and funerals. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Little Falls, Ruth Circle, Quilters Circle and V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 1112 of Little Falls.
Survivors include her sons, George Petersen and wife Jean of Little Falls, Otto Petersen and wife Joan of Long Prairie, MN; daughters Leona Soltis and husband Wallace of St. Cloud, MN, Myrna Schrupp and husband Kenneth of Pine River, MN, Selma Glende and husband, Roger of Winona, MN; daughter-in-law Loretta Petersen of Bowlus, MN; brother Noah Wolters and wife Mary Jane of Little Falls; sister-in-law Elsie Nelson of Bowlus, MN; brother Noah Wolters and wife Mary Jane of Little Falls; sister-in-law Elsie Nelson of Bowlus; 31 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Philip in 1968; son James; infant daughter Carol Marie; brothers Hans, Nels, Walter, Christ, Peter and Paul Wolters; sisters Anna Petersen, Lillie Olson, Carrie DeNio; infant grandson Steven Bollin.
Pallbearers were Rick Bollin, Joey Soltis, Bruce Petersen, Keith Petersen, Judith Kaiser and Doreen Volcke.
Laura Gilson
Laura Mae Gilson, age 84, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Fort Ripley died, April 14, 1999 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial was held April 17 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN, with Rev. Harold J. Kost officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Laura Mae Gilson was born February 15, 1915, in St. Mathias, MN, to the late Eugene and Amelia (DeRosier) Magnan. She grew up and attended school in the St. Mathias area. She attended Brainerd Teachers College, graduating from there in 1936. She taught in the Brainerd area school system. She was united in marriage to Joseph Gilson June 27, 1939 in St. Mathias Catholic Church. Joe and Laura purchased a farm in the Fort Ripley area where they raised their 5 children. The couple purchased a home in La Feria, TX in 1978 where they would spend the winter months. Joe and Laura moved to the Alverna Apartments in Little Falls in 1993 where they resided until her death.
Laura was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Belle Prairie, and St. Ann’s Christian Mothers. She enjoyed quilting, dancing, painting, playing cards and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Gilson of Little Falls; sons Allen Gilson and wife Sue of Little Falls, Jerry Gilson and wife Geri of Coon Rapids, MN; daughters Sandy Frasl and husband Bud of Fort Ripley, MN, Joann Mason and husband Tom of St. Paul, MN, Renee Schubel of Brainerd, MN; sisters Anne Soper and Claire Gilson of Los Angeles, CA; Lorraine Wolvert of Brainerd; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
Pallbearers were Laura Mae’s grandchildren.
