Frances M. Banks
1922-1999
SABETHA, Kan. -- Frances M. Banks, 77, Sabetha, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at her residence.
Miss Banks was a waitress and employed by Whitaker Cable Corp., all in St. Joseph. She retired from Chase Candy Co. in St. Joseph.
Born March 28, 1922, south of Sabetha, Kan., Miss Banks was a graduate of Fairview High School.
Miss Banks attended a Catholic Church while living in St. Joseph.
Miss Banks was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nellie Banks; and two brothers, Clarence and John.
Surviving: a brother, Bill Banks, Sabetha, Kan.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Popkess Mortuary, Sabetha, Kan. Burial: Sabetha (Kan.) Cemetery. Visitation: after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Sabetha Community Hospital and sent in care of the funeral home.

Ralph S. Bennett
1969-1999
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Ralph Swan Bennett, 30, Des Moines, formerly of St. Joseph, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at a hospital in Des Moines.
Mr. Bennett had been employed as a chef in Kansas City.
Born in St. Joseph on Feb. 25, 1969, he had lived in St. Joseph and Kansas City before moving to Des Moines. He was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph.
Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Sr.
Surviving: a daughter, Melody Bennett, Kansas City; his mother, Delores Bennett, St. Joseph; a brother, Benjamin Jr., St. Joseph; and a sister, Donna Healy, Georgia.
Graveside memorial service and inurnment: 10 a.m. today, Ashland Cemetery, St. Joseph. The body has been cremated.

Rosalia Broxterman
1910-1999
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Rosalia "Sally" (Rochel) Broxterman, 88, Overland Park, formerly of Baileyville, Kan., died Monday, July 12, 1999, at a health-care center in Overland Park.
Mrs. Broxterman and her husband, Lawrence, had owned and operated Broxterman Grocery and Caf in Baileyville beginning in 1936. The store was sold, and she continued to work there until retiring in 1988.
Born on a farm south of Fidelity, Kan., on Aug. 20, 1910, she graduated from SS. Peter and Paul High School in Seneca, Kan.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was active in St. Ann's Altar Society; Benedictine Oblates; and Widowers and Widows Club, all of Baileyville.
On June 2, 1931, she married Lawrence F. Broxterman in Fidelity. They made their home in Baileyville. He died in 1975.
Mrs. Broxterman also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Juanita; and her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Rochel.
Surviving: two sons, Leighton, South Lake, Texas, and Alan, Overland Park; four daughters, LaBerta Heiman, Mesa, Wash., Janette Michael, Maple Hill, Kan., Nila J. Sloan, Panama City, Fla., and Lois Martin, Lennon, Mich.; a brother, the Rev. Tony Rochel, St. Louis; three sisters, Sister Mary L. Rochel, Huntington, Ind., Suitberta Burdick, Fidelity, and Margaret Haug, Seneca, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Friday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Baileyville. Burial: church cemetery. Visitation: after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Lauer Funeral Home, Seneca, where rosaries will be recited at 2 and 7 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church "New Baseball Fields" Fund at Baileyville in care of the family.

Betty L. Coyle
1927-1999
SAVANNAH, Mo. -- Betty L. (Smith) Gabriel Coyle, 72, Savannah, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Coyle had been employed by the former Northside Caf, Lighthouse Caf, Fallis Pharmacy, Pat's Superette, P & T Bowling Lanes and Ben Franklin Store, all of Savannah. She retired from Swanson's Harvest Station Foods in Savannah in 1989.
Born in Hatfield, Mo., on Oct. 26, 1927, she had lived in Gentry and Worth Counties, Mo., before moving to Savannah in 1958.
She was a graduate of the Albany, Mo., high school. Mrs. Coyle was a member of the First Baptist Church, Savannah, and was an honorary member of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Keith Gabriel, in 1955. Then on Sept. 19, 1960, she married Raymond K. Coyle. He died in 1996.
Mrs. Coyle also was preceded in death by a son, Larry K. Gabriel; a daughter, Mary L. O'Dell; her parents, Thomas D. and Essie Smith; and a grandchild.
Surviving: a son, Danny Gabriel, Savannah; a brother, Harvey Smith, Topeka, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Helena (Mo.) Cemetery. Visitation: after 10 a.m. today, at the Breit & Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

John H. Crawford Jr.
1920-1999
John Henry Crawford Jr., 79, St. Joseph, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at a Leavenworth, Kan., hospital.
Mr. Crawford was a used car dealer for more than 50 years and retired from Klein Motors. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Born in Millinocket, Maine, on March 28, 1920, he had been a resident of St. Joseph since 1945.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Pony Express American Legion Post No. 359.
On Sept. 3, 1945, he married Clarice Kenny in St. Joseph. She survives of the home.
Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Mary; and two sisters.
Additional survivors: five sons, John H. III, Brandon, Fla., Timothy and Ken, both of St. Joseph, Bill, Gladstone, Mo., and Kevin, Minneapolis; two daughters, Pat Chung, Blue Springs, Mo., and Eileen Shipp, Richland, Wash.; a brother, James, Millinocket; three sisters, Elizabeth Kelley, Helen Spence and Eileen Moscone, all of Millinocket; and 14 grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at the Rupp Funeral Home in St. Joseph.

Lavene Crispin
1922-1999
HIGHLAND, Kan. -- Lavene (Drake) Crispin, 77, Highland, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Born June 17, 1922, in Nemaha County, Kan., Mrs. Crispin, a beauty operator, was a graduate of Alma (Colo.) High School. The family later moved to Texas.
Mrs. Crispin was a member of the Christian Church in Highland.
She married Wallace Ratliff in Texas. After several years they moved to Weatherford, Okla. where she worked for the 3-M Co. before retiring. He died in 1988. She then married Cecil Crispin. He died in 1998.
Mrs. Crispin also was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Nora Drake.
Surviving: a daughter, Leta Ballard, Lee's Summit, Mo.; three brothers Charles Drake, Highland, Kan., Elmo Drake, Topeka, Kan., and Gordon Drake, Junction City, Kan.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Service: 10:30 Wednesday, Highland (Kan.) Christian Church. Burial: Iowa Point Cemetery, north of Highland. Visitation: after 10 a.m. today at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Highland, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Memorials may be made to the Iowa Point Cemetery Association, in care of the funeral home, 302 W. Main, Highland, KS 66035.

Sidney W. Crow
1914-1999
SMITHVILLE, Mo. -- Sidney W. Crow, 84, Smithville, died Monday, July 12, 1999, at a North Kansas City, Mo., hospital.
Mr. Crow had farmed near Smithville. He also had worked for the Missouri State Employment Service for 20 years until retiring in 1979.
Born near Smithville on Aug. 6, 1914, he was reared there and graduated from the Smithville high school.
Mr. Crow was a member of the First Christian Church, Smithville, where he served as a deacon, elder, trustee and president of the board, and was a teacher for the Twentieth Century Sunday school class and Pilgrim Sunday school class, as well as holding the title of elder emeritus. He also was a member of the Association of Retired Missouri State Employees.
On June 8, 1935, he married Jennie L. Silvey in North Kansas City. She survives of the home.
Mr. Crow was preceded in death by his parents, James R. and Madaline; and six sisters, Ruby Coons, Jimmie C. and Nancy Rule, Sallie Nelson, Helen Denney and an infant.
Service: 11 a.m. Thursday, First Christian Church, Smithville. Burial: Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smithville. Family visitation: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before the service at the church. Arrangements: Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, Mo. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund at Smithville.

Carol S. Poole
1932-1999
Carol Sharon (Rudd) Miller Poole, 66, St. Joseph, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Poole was a licensed practical nurse at Weber Memorial Hospital in Roy, Utah, for several years.
Born in Driggs, Idaho, on Aug. 2, 1932, she was reared in Ogden, Utah. She moved from Belton, Mo., to St. Joseph in 1993.
Mrs. Poole attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon).
She married Leland E. Miller. They were later divorced. Then on Oct. 2, 1964, she married Peter B. Poole. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by a son, Robert L. Miller; and her mother, Ruby G. Dow.
Additional survivors: a son, Gary L. Miller, Ogden; a stepson, Richard Miller, Germany; three daughters, Vickie L. Allgood, Belton, Lynn Hill, Ogden, and Kathy L. Newman, St. Joseph; two stepdaughters, Linda Weaver and Ellen Miracle; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. Joseph. The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation. Arrangements: Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Michael K. Sifers
1949-1999
STEWARTSVILLE, Mo. -- Michael K. Sifers, 50, Stewartsville, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Sifers was employed by Motorcycle Stuff of Cape Girardeau, Mo., for 10 years. An auctioneer for 15 years, he worked for Eagle Auction Service of Kearney, Mo., and Shakelford and Ratliff Auction Co. in Clarksdale, Mo. He also was affiliated with Action Cycle of Kansas City in the repair shop.
Born in St. Joseph on April 2, 1949, he spent most of his life in the Stewartsville and Hemple, Mo., areas. He also had resided in Kansas City.
In 1977, he married Polly A. Collins in Independence, Mo. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors: three sons, Mike Sifers, Stewartsville, Keith Sifers, Cameron, Mo., and Everett Bromley, Kansas City; and four grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 1 p.m. Monday, Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Stewartsville. Family visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph.

Larry R. Tilton
1944-1999
EFFINGHAM, Kan. -- Larry R. Tilton, 54, Effingham, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Tilton was a teacher for 32 years with the U.S.D. No. 377. He taught history at the Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, as well as coached football, track and wrestling. He also served as athletic director for many years.
He and his sons operate the Tilton Construction Co.
Born near Highland, Kan., on Nov. 29, 1944, he graduated from the Everest, Kan., Rural High School; Highland Community College and Emporia, Kan., State Teachers College with honors.
Mr. Tilton was a member of the First Christian Church in Everest and a former member of the Effingham City Council.
On Nov. 21, 1964, he married Margo Smith in Everest. She survives of the home.
Mr. Tilton was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Hazel.
Additional survivors: two sons, Guy, Atchison, Kan., and Dustin, Olathe, Kan.; a daughter, Carissa Tilton, Minneapolis; and a sister, Carolyn Spangler, Kansas City.
Service: 2 p.m. Monday, First Christian Church, Horton. Burial: Miller Cemetery, Everest. Family visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton. Memorials may be made to the Everest Christian Church or American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary, 909 Central Ave., Horton, KS 66439.

Elaine M. Westcott
1941-1999
ELWOOD, Kan. -- Elaine M. (Jackson) Westcott, 57, Elwood, formerly of Salem, Neb., died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Westcott was employed by restaurants throughout the years.
Born in Verdon, Neb., on Aug. 25, 1941, she moved to Salem in 1946. She lived in various places and was a resident of Elwood for two years.
Mrs. Westcott was preceded in death by her parents, Elzworth F. and Laura Jackson; a brother, Wayne Jackson; and two sisters, Deloris Craig and Marvel Bachman.
Surviving: two sons, Frederick E. Bachman, Maitland, Mo., and Warren Vogele Jr., Falls City, Neb.; three daughters, Martha Bergin, Nocona, Texas, Louise Taylor, Wichita, Kan., and Ronda Strecker, Humphrey, Neb.; two brothers, Earl Jackson, Osborne, Kan., and Ervin Jackson, Holdrege, Neb.; three sisters, Mildred White, Salem, Iola Ewing, Falls City, and Ruby Smith, Wathena, Kan.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Monday, Dorr Funeral Home, Falls City. Burial: Maple Cemetery, Salem.

Hazel I. Worley
1909-1999
MOUND CITY, Mo. -- Hazel I. (Gilland) Worley, 89, Mound City, formerly of St. Joseph, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Worley worked at the former Noma Lites in St. Joseph; and the Duncan Nursing Home and Tiffany Heights Nursing Home, both of Mound City.
Born in Bigelow, Mo., on Nov. 2, 1909, she lived in Bigelow, Craig and St. Joseph, Mo., before moving to Mound City.
Mrs. Worley attended the Bigelow school. She was a member of the Church of God in St. Joseph and Savannah, Mo.
On July 23, 1928, she married Clarence E. Worley. He died in 1977.
Mrs. Worley also was preceded in death by a daughter, Ramona Worley; her parents, Allie and Myrtle M. Gilland; three brothers, Harold, Harry and Clarence C. Gilland; four sisters, Frances Elder, Mildred Williams, Roberta Oatman and Margaret Gilland; and four grandchildren.
Surviving: two sons, Clarence, Mound City, and Raymond, Meridian, Miss.; a daughter, Beverly Chastain, St. Joseph; two brothers, Bob Gilland, St. Joseph, and Les Gilland, Bigelow; a sister, Doris Davis, Mound City; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Service: 10 a.m. Monday, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City. Visitation: after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
