Ethel M. Miller
1901-1999
GALLATIN, Mo. -- Ethel Mae (Street) Miller, 97, Gallatin, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at the Cameron, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Miller, a homemaker, also had worked as a seamstress.
Born in Carlow, Mo., on May 20, 1901, she had spent most of her life in Gallatin.
She was a member of the Free-Will Baptist Church in Carlow.
On Sept. 12, 1917, she married Frank V. Miller in Chillicothe, Mo. He died in 1980.
Mrs. Miller also was preceded in death by her parents, Charles W. and Mary T. Street; a brother, Willie T. Street; and three sisters, Eva Street, Pearl McDow and Elizabeth Miller.
Surviving: a daughter, Ilene C. Miller, Gallatin; and a sister, Josie Barlow, Gallatin.
Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Hope-Eldringhoff Funeral Home, Gallatin. Burial: Centenary Cemetery, Gallatin. Visitation: after 8 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to the Centenary Cemetery in care of the funeral home, 201 S. Market, Gallatin, MO 64640.

Virgil F. Nunn
1908-1999
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- Virgil F. Nunn, 90, Excelsior Springs, formerly of St. Joseph, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at the Liberty, Mo., hospital.
Mr. Nunn had been employed by the Burlington Railroad and later as a construction worker.
Born in Manford Creek, Okla., on July 15, 1908, he resided in St. Joseph before moving to Excelsior Springs in 1958.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Excelsior Springs; Carpenters Union No. 938, Richmond, Mo.; and King Hill Masonic Lodge No. 376, St. Joseph.
On Dec. 27, 1927, he married Frances Hayes in Marceline, Mo. She died in 1952. Then on May 31, 1958, he married Furn Hatfield in Miami, Okla. She died in 1997.
Mr. Nunn also was preceded in death by his parents, George and Suetta; and four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving: a son, Pat, St. Joseph; two daughters, Phyllis Heath, St. Joseph, and Gerlene McPeak, Excelsior Springs; two brothers, Victor McDonald, Casper, Wyo., and Joe McDonald, Unionville, Mo.; three sisters, Violet Perry, Des Moines, Iowa, Alice Martin, Roeland Park, Kan., and Valora McDonald, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Prichard Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs. Burial: Crown Hill Cemetery, Excelsior Springs. Family visitation: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

James R. Thompson
1950-1999
James Richard "Rick" Thompson, 49, St. Joseph, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Born in Brookfield, Mo., on March 13, 1950, Mr. Thompson was employed as a building inspector for the City of St. Joseph until leaving that position due to ill health.
He married Brenda Lininger. They were later divorced.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his father, Richard Thompson.
Surviving: two sons, Eric, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Chris, St. Joseph; his mother, Peggy Garvey, St. Joseph; and two grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 2 p.m. Monday, Rose Hill Cemetery, Brookfield. Visitation: noon to 2 p.m. Monday, at the Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home, Brookfield. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Thomas F. Thompson
1916-1999
Thomas F. Thompson, 82, St. Joseph, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
For 35 years, Mr. Thompson was employed by Armour and Co. He retired from the Dugdale Packing Co. after 5 years of service.
Born in St. Joseph on Oct. 22, 1916, he was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph. He was a graduate of Benton High School.
Mr. Thompson was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church; King Hill Lodge No. 376, A.F. & A.M.; 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Moila Shrine Temple.
On May 23, 1977, he married Loretta E. Gibson in Excelsior Springs, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his first wife, Vada; his parents, Joseph A. and Ola; two brothers, Joe J. and Robert; and a sister, Ethel Hamlin.
Additional survivors: two brothers, Jack, St. Joseph, and Bill, Gladstone, Mo.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m., Tuesday, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after 1 p.m. Monday, at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Joseph.

Franklin N. Barnes Jr.
1934-1999
MOSBY, Mo. -- Franklin Northern Barnes Jr., 64, Mosby, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a Kansas City hospital.
Mr. Barnes was employed at the Ford Motor Co. on the truck assembly line, retiring in 1991.
Born Nov. 18, 1934, in Mosby, he was a lifelong resident of the Mosby area.
Mr. Barnes was a member of the Woodland Baptist Church, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and the UAW Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin Sr. and Beatrice.
Surviving: two daughters, Kelli Decker, Orrick, Mo., and Rochelle Brinton, St. Joseph; a sister, Genevieve Foley, Gladstone, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Woodland Baptist Church, Excelsior Springs. Burial: New Hope Cemetery, Liberty, Mo. Family visitation: 7 to 9 tonight, Prichard Funeral Home, Excelsior Springs.

Kenneth G. Folgate
1901-1999
ALBANY, Mo. -- Kenneth G. Folgate, 97, Albany, died Friday, April 2, 1999.
Mr. Folgate, a retired farmer and carpenter, was born in Gentry County, Mo., on Dec. 22, 1901.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Albany.
On Jan. 6, 1927, he married Gladys Schuster. She died in 1976.
Mr. Folgate also was preceded in death by his parents, Chauncy and Rebecca; five brothers, Lee, Dee, Ward, Jason and William; and a sister, Stella Pierce.
Surviving: a son, Carl, Ridgeway, Mo.; two daughters, Mary Mulnix, Bethany, Mo., and Pauline Toombs, Darlington, Mo.; a brother, Eldon, Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany. Burial: Hugginsville Cemetery, Albany. Visitation: after noon today, at the chapel, where the family will receive friends after 7 tonight. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, Albany, in care of the funeral chapel.

Nora Hodler
1908-1999
Nora (Wilson) Hodler, 90, St. Joseph, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center.
Mrs. Hodler, a homemaker, lived most of her life in the St. Joseph area.
She was born April 23, 1908, in Powhatten, Kan.
Mrs. Hodler was preceded in death by her husband, Roy H.; her parents, Henry E. and Nora A. Wilson; and a grandchild.
Surviving: a daughter, Jenny Grishow, St. Joseph; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
There is no scheduled service or visitation. Burial: Monday, Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Arrangements: Breit & Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah, Mo.

Jerry L. Ledbetter
1942-1999
STEWARTSVILLE, Mo. --Jerry L. Ledbetter, 56, Stewartsville, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at a Fairhope, Ala., hospital, while on vacation.
Mr. Ledbetter, a machinist, was employed as a diesel mechanic for Grimes Construction, Stewartsville. He also owned and operated Ledbetter Muffler Shop, Stewartsville.
Born April 23, 1942, in Swedeborg, Mo., he was a graduate of South Harrison High School, Bethany, Mo.
Mr. Ledbetter was a member of Deer Park United Methodist Church, St. Joseph.
On Dec. 31, 1961, he married Andrea K. Hamann in Stewartsville. She survives of the home.
Mr. Ledbetter was preceded in death by a son, Randal; and his parents, Earl and Irene.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Lora Ledbetter, Olathe, Kan.; two brothers, Curtis and Earl, both of Cameron; a sister, Roberta F. Mayer, Lexington, Mo.; and two grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Deer Park United Methodist Church, St. Joseph. Burial: Stewartsville Cemetery. Family visitation: 7 to 9 tonight, Bram-Summerfield Funeral Home, Stewartsville. Nellie M. Morris
1905-1999
TOPEKA, Kan. -- Nellie Mae (Teer) Morris, 93, Topeka, formerly of Whiting and Holton, Kan., died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at a Topeka, health-care center.
Mrs. Morris, a farmwife, had lived in the Whiting area for the last 30 years.
She was born on April 20, 1905, near Birmingham, Kan.
On Sept. 26, 1922, she married James V. Morris in Holton. He died in 1953.
Mrs. Morris also was preceded in death by eight sons, Robert, Orville, Milton, Lawrence, Jim, Everett, Lloyd and Warren; her parents, Ora and Annie M. Teer; and three grandchildren.
Surviving: two sons, Ray H., Topeka, and Russ D., Berryton, Kan.; a daughter, June A. Cavin, Wetmore, Kan.; a sister, Iva Lawson, Topeka; 29 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren.

Helen S. Ouelette
1904-1999
HORTON, Kan. -- Helen S. (Gladfelter) Ouelette, 94, Horton, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a Horton health-care center.
Mrs. Ouelette worked as a corsetier for Spencer Corsetier Co.
Born Sept. 3, 1904, in Horton, she was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Horton, and St. Leo's Altar Society, of the church.
Mrs. Ouelette also was a member of the Horton Card Playing Club.
In Dalhart, Texas, she married James McNerney. He later died. She then married John Barry, in Horton. He also died. Then she married William Ouelette in Brookfield, Ill. He died in 1975.
Mrs. Ouelette also was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Currie; and her parents, Sherman and Minnie Gladfelter.
Surviving: a son, James McNerney, Lyons, Ill.; a sister, Myrtle Haggard, Brookfield, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Leo's Catholic Church, Horton. Burial: at a later date, St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery, Horton. Visitation: after 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton, where the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Leo's Catholic Church, in care of the mortuary, 909 Central Ave., Horton, KS 66439.

Helen I. Shades
1912-1999
WARSAW, Mo. -- Helen Irene (Birkenholz) Shades, 86, Warsaw, formerly of Burlington Junction, Mo., died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at a Clinton, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Shades, a homemaker, lived in Burlington Junction for 50 years before moving to Warsaw 10 years ago.
Born Oct. 31, 1912, in Inavale, Neb., she was a graduate of College High School, Maryville, Mo.
Mrs. Shades was a member of Missouri United Methodist Church and Golden Keys, both of Burlington Junction. She also was a Red Cross volunteer.
On March 16, 1931, she married William A. Shades in Troy, Kan. He died in 1996.
Mrs. Shades also was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Della Birkenholz; four brothers, Bill, Joe, Johnnie and Viron E. Birkenholz; two sisters, Mildred Boyle and Golda Cordell; and a grandchild.
Surviving: a son, Bill Jr., Warsaw; a daughter, Betty Crowdes, Warsaw; two sisters, Altha Bird and Marion Nicholson, both of Maryville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Price Funeral Home, Maryville. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville. Family visitation: 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be sent to Burlington Junction United Methodist Church.

Elsie Sharp
1902-1999
BETHANY, Mo. -- Elsie (Payne) Sharp, 97, Bethany, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at the Bethany hospital.
Mrs. Sharp, a homemaker, also was an antique collector.
She was born on March 4, 1902, in Harrison County, Mo.
Mrs. Sharp was a member of Lookout Club; 60+ Club; Double Duty Club; Gray Lady for the Harrison County Community Hospital; and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, all of Bethany.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton, in 1971; three sons, Larry, John and Bobby; her parents, Squire and Matilda Payne; and a grandchild.
Surviving: three sons, Bill and Ronnie, both of Cameron, Mo., and Ken, Bartlesville, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany. Burial: Miriam Cemetery, Bethany. Visitation: after 2 p.m. today, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Lydia Vermilyea
1925-1999
Lydia Swiastyn Vermilyea, 73, St. Joseph, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Vermilyea, born in the East Ukraine on May 25, 1925, moved from there to St. Joseph in 1951.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church and then St. James Catholic Church.
Mrs. Vermilyea was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Swiastyn; her second husband, Ferold R. Vermilyea; her father, Ivan Kolos; and her mother, Ana Tenin-Safan.
Surviving: three sons, John and Daniel Swiastyn, both of St. Joseph, and Michael Swiastyn, Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Jeanette McCann, St. Joseph, and Connie Swiastyn, Kansas City; and nine grandchildren.
The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation nor service. Arrangements were by Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph.
