Gale D. Cochran
1938-1999
MAYSVILLE, Mo. -- Gale D. Cochran, 60, Maysville, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Cochran was employed by the Ford Motor Plant in Claycomo, Mo., for 12 years until retiring in 1991.
Born in St. Joseph on July 22, 1938, he spent most of his life in Maysville.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union No. 249 in Kansas City.
On July 6, 1959, he married Shirley Estes in Stewartsville, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Cochran was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Sally; a brother, Louis; and three sisters, Georgeanna and Gladys Cochran, and Margaret Cobb.
Additional survivors: a son, Ralph, Maysville; three daughters, Connie Mans and Gala Ellis, both of Maysville, and Brenda Walker, Cameron, Mo.; six brothers, Buford, Warrensburg, Mo., Cecil, Joe and Harold, all of Osborn, Mo., Frank, Wathena, Kan., and Donald, Amity, Mo.; a sister, Harriet Harris, Amity; seven grandchildren; and a step-grandchild.
Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Poland-Thompson Funeral Home, Cameron. Burial: Woods Cemetery, northeast of Maysville. Family visitation: 7 to 8 tonight, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Otis N. Dettmann
1933-1999
HIAWATHA, Kan. -- Otis N. Dettmann, 66, Hiawatha, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his residence.
Mr. Dettmann worked at Boeing in Wichita, Kan.; in 1959 he worked for Joy's Machine Shop in Falls City, Neb.; and in 1967 he started working for the Gas Service Co. in Hiawatha, continuing until his retirement in 1992.
Born April 19, 1933, northeast of Humboldt, Neb., Mr. Dettmann, was a graduate of Shubert (Neb.) High School.
Mr. Dettmann served in the Army from 1953 to 1956. He was a member of First Christian Church, Hiawatha; Shubert (Neb.) American Legion Post No. 222; and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 1765, Falls City, Neb.
On March 27, 1966, he married Alberta Koenig at Shubert, Neb. She survives of the home.
Mr. Dettmann was preceded in death by his parents David A. and Cora B.; and a brother, Raymond.
Additional survivors: two sons, Dwight K., O'Fallon, Ill., and Steven L., Hiawatha, Kan.; two daughters, Kathy D. Loudner, Blair, Neb., and Billie D. Varuska, Platte City, Mo.; three brothers, Marvin R., Clearwater, Kan., David D., Underwood, Iowa, and Leonard, Humboldt, Neb.; a sister, Mary G. Kesting, Omaha, Neb.; and five grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, First Christian Church, Hiawatha. Burial: Verdon (Neb.) Cemetery. Graveside services by Shubert American Legion Post No. 222. Family visitation: 7 to 8 tonight at the Dorr Funeral Home, Falls City, Neb.

Raymond F. Duncan
1914-1999
Raymond F. Duncan, 85, St. Joseph, died Sunday, April 25, 1999.
Mr. Duncan was employed by the St. Joseph Stock Yards as an engineer for 50 years until retiring.
Born in Troy, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1914, he spent most of his life in St. Joseph. He graduated from Central High School and was a Christian.
Mr. Duncan was a member of the King Hill Lodge No. 376, A.F. & A.M.; and a former member of the Scottish Rite and Moila Shrine Temple.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Allene; his second wife, Alberta Hall; his parents, Ira and Rose; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Violett Nazarr.
Surviving: three stepsons, Don and James Hall, both of St. Joseph, and Charlie Hall, Marceline, Mo.; Rhonda Calloway, who had cared for him in his home; and nine step-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 7 to 9 tonight, at the Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph.

Mark E. Dyer
1959-1999
AMARILLO, Texas, -- Mark Edward Dyer, 39, Amarillo, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at a health-care center where he had been a resident as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in 1976.
Born Nov. 7, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Dyer was 16 at the time of the accident and had just completed his sophomore year at Tascosa High School in Amarillo, where he had served as class president.
Mr. Dyer was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Maurice E., formerly of Weston, Mo.; and a brother, Craig D.; his paternal grandparents, Leslie and Maude Dyer.
Surviving: his mother, Marilyn Dyer, South Padre Island, Texas; two sisters, Melinda Dyer, San Antonio, and Cherilyn Morrison, Austin, Texas; three brothers, Dr. Keith, and Kent, both of Amarillo, Texas, and Brooke of Goleta, Calif.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. today at Bivins Nursing Home Chapel: Graveside service and burial, 10 a.m. Friday, Sugar Creek Cemetery, near Rushville, Mo. Arrangements: Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, Kan. Memorials may be made to Mary E. Willa J. Beverlin
1930-1999
MILAN, Mo. -- Willa Jean (Powell) Beverlin, 68, Milan, formerly of Trenton, Mo., died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at the Milan hospital.
Mrs. Beverlin was employed by Hammond's Laundrymat, Duke's Package Store and Burton's Liquor Store, all of Trenton; and the 65 Club, near Princeton, Mo.
Born in Modena, Mo., on Dec. 28, 1930, she was reared there and graduated from the Spickard, Mo., high school. She lived most of her adult life at Spickard and Trenton.
She was a member of the Tenth Street Baptist Church and Royal Neighbors of America Camp No. 1387, both of Trenton.
Mrs. Beverlin was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Ellis; her parents, Walter G. and Hulda K. Powell; a sister, Thelma Gibler; and a brother, Bobby Powell.
Surviving: two daughters, Rebecca Morton and Karen S. Van Hoozer, both of Trenton; a sister, Beulah Wilson, Trenton; and two grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Friday, Resthaven Mortuary, Trenton. Burial: Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Trenton. Family visitation: 7 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.

Violet M. Bledsoe
1917-1999
BETHANY, Mo. -- Violet M. (Benham) Bledsoe, 82, Bethany, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at a health-care center in Bethany.
Born in Coffey, Mo., on Jan. 14, 1917, Mrs. Bledsoe, a former, homemaker, was a former resident of New Hampton, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bledsoe, in 1995; and her parents, Harvey and Edith Benham.
Surviving: a son, Darrell B. Hyde, Bethany; two sisters, Bonnie Wigington, Waldon, Colo., and Rosalie Dennis, Polk City, Iowa; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 11 a.m. Saturday, Coffey Cemetery. Visitation: after 9 a.m. Saturday at the Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany. There is no scheduled family visitation.

Christian G. Finger
1914-1999
NETAWAKA, Kan. -- Christian G. Finger, 84, Netawaka, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at a Topeka, Kan., hospital.
Born on a farm near Powhattan, Kan., on Nov. 2, 1914, Mr. Finger was engaged in farming.
On April 19, 1936, he married Mary B. Keller. She survives of the home.
Mr. Finger was preceded in death by his parents, Christian G. Sr. and Clara; and a brother, Emil.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Bettie Edwards, St. Joseph; two sons, Bennie, Netawaka, and Chelmar, Holton, Kan.; four brothers, Ernest, Netawaka, Samuel, Hiawatha, Kan., Reuben, Horton, Kan., and Eddie, Powhattan; two sisters, Helen Dodge, Topeka, Kan., and Elizabeth Andres, Alta Vista, Kan.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Friday, United Methodist Church, Powhattan. Burial: Powhattan Cemetery. Visitation: after 9 a.m. today at the Framke-Casselman-Meek Funeral Home, Hiawatha, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight. Memorials may be made in Mr. Finger's memory in care of the funeral home.

Wilbur J. Grimm
1918-1999
SABETHA, Kan. -- Wilbur J. Grimm, 81, Sabetha, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at the Sabetha hospital.
Mr. Grimm entered farming as a young man and served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He also worked as a mechanic.
Born in Oneida, Kan., on Feb. 17, 1918, he was reared on the family farm northeast of Oneida and attended the Cocklebur Rural School, north of Oneida.
He attended the First United Methodist Church; and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7285 and John L. Palmer American Legion Post No. 126, all of Sabetha.
On Nov. 25, 1945, he married Elzada Wikle in Morrill, Kan. They lived and farmed in the Berwick, Kan., area until retiring to Sabetha in 1976. She survives of the home.
Mr. Grimm was preceded in death by a son, James W.; his parents, Chris and Katherine; three brothers, Albert C., Nathan and Dave; two sisters, Elsie Hess and Florence Rokey; and a grandchild.
Additional survivors: two sons, Jerry, Sabetha, and Dennis, Pierce, Neb.; three daughters, Shirley Stout, Wichita, Kan., Janet Marcou, Phoenix, and Beverly Schuster, Sabetha; a brother, Paul, Sabetha; two sisters, Irene Lehman, Sabetha, and Alvina Zimmerman, Morton, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Friday, Popkess Mortuary, Sabetha. Burial: Sabetha Cemetery, with military rites by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.7285, Sabetha. Memorials may be made to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan.; or the American Diabetes Association in care of the mortuary.

Charles E. Sample
1926-1999
Charles E. Sample, 73, St. Joseph, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Sample was employed by the Prudential Insurance Co. for 33 years as an agent and sales manager until retiring. He worked in the company's Maryville, Mo., office for 13 of those years before moving to St. Joseph.
Born in Stewartsville, Mo., on March 6, 1926, he lived in Maryville for 13 years and had been a resident of St. Joseph since 1966.
He was a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia with a bachelor's degree in business; and the College of Life Underwriters.
Mr. Sample served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church and a former member of the Life Underwriters Association.
On June 2, 1946, he married Frances E. Landis in Stewartsville. She survives of the home.
Mr. Sample was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E. Sr. and Bertha; and a grandchild.
Additional survivors: a son, Dennis L., Gower, Mo.; three daughters, Betsy L. Harness, Deanna M. Fillmore and Gail S. Horn, all of St. Joseph; two sisters, Mary E. Waller and Rosella Thompson, both of St. Joseph; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Service: 1:30 p.m Friday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after noon today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials may be made to the Ashland United Methodist Church or Interfaith Community Services, both of St. Joseph.

Mary E. Stephens
1920-1999
CASEY, Iowa -- Mary Ellen (Billups) Stephens, 79, Casey, formerly of Ridgeway and Cainsville, Mo., died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at the home of his daughter, Cynthia Powell, in Casey.
Mrs. Stephens worked in the dietary department of the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City from 1978 until retiring in 1985. In Iowa City, she also was employed by the Hy-Vee Store.
During her early years in the Ridgeway area, she was a housekeeper and assisted a doctor in delivering babies.
Born in Ridgeway on Feb. 20, 1920, she was reared and attended schools in that area. She moved to Iowa City after her marriage and to Casey in 1990.
She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Iowa City and Methodist Church; and was a member of the 60-Plus Club.
On Jan. 30, 1956, she married William F. Stephens in Iowa City. He died in 1981.
Mrs. Stephens also was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Myrtle Billups; two brothers, Dorral and Atchie Billups; and four sisters, Retha Morris, Arlene Johnson, Ruby Eivins and Erma D. Shipley.
Additional survivors: a brother, Tom Billups, Woodland, Wash.; two sisters, Maxine Shipley, Kansas City, and Faye Spencer, Carson City, Nev.; four stepgrandchildren; and 12 step great-grandchildren.

James L. Wainscott
1948-1999
FAUCETT, Mo. -- James Louis Wainscott, 51, Faucett, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Wainscott was born in Weston, Mo., on Feb. 7, 1948, and was a lifelong resident of the Dearborn, Mo., and Weston areas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleo and Betty Wainscott; and a brother.
Surviving: several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service and burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dearborn Cemetery. Arrangements: Vaughn-Aufranc Funeral Home, Dearborn. Memorials may be made in Mr. Wainscott's memory in care of the funeral home.

Alfred K. Embery
1924-1999
WATHENA, Kan. -- Alfred Kenneth Embery, 75, Wathena, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at the home of his son in Lenexa, Kan.
Mr. Embery was employed until his retirement at Sister's Hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.
Born March 11, 1924, in St. Joseph, he was a graduate of Wathena High School.
Mr. Embery served in the Marines during World War II, and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 161 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5531, all of Wathena, Kan.
On Jan. 29, 1945, he married Maxine Manville in Wathena. She died in 1975.
Mr. Embery also was preceded in death by his parents, N.J. and Frances; and a sister, Marge Manville.
Surviving: a son, Nick, Lenexa, Kan.; a sister, Genevieve Presley, Silver Spring, Md.; three brothers, F.X., Tucson, Ariz., Pete, Rowland Heights, Calif., and Nick, Denver; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wathena. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wathena, where military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 161 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5531. Evening Prayer: 7 tonight at St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by visitation. Arrangements: Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Wathena. Edna P. Gillespie
1930-1999
Edna Pearl (Barton) Gillespie, 69, St. Joseph, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Gillespie had been employed by the former Whitaker Cable Corp. in St. Joseph.
Born in Cameron, Mo., on Jan. 18, 1930, she lived most of her life in St. Joseph. She was graduate from the Princeton, Mo., high school and was a Methodist.
In 1950, she married Charles Gillespie in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by a son, Gary Boyer; her parents, William and Ruby Barton; two brothers, Ralph and Donald Barton; and a sister, Maxine Johnson.
Additional survivors: three sons, Steve Boyer, Springfield, Mo., Jerry Boyer, Stewartsville, Mo., and Terry Boyer, St. Joseph; a daughter, Tammy Hogan, St. Joseph; and three grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.
