Esther M. Post
1914-1999
Esther M. (Digehan) Post, 84, St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Post had been employed as a sales clerk in the hosiery department of the former Townsend & Wall department store for 12 years.
Born in Easton, Mo., on Aug. 19, 1914, she had lived in St. Joseph for most of her life.
She was a former member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Easton and attended St. Joseph's Cathedral in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Post was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow I., in 1995; her parents, James and Odessa Digehan; and three sisters, Elizabeth Powell, Eileen Sandusky and Margaret Davis.
Surviving: a brother-in-law, Eugene C. Post, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Virginia M. Tomkins, Liberty, Mo.
Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. Burial: St. Joseph's Cemetery, Easton. Family visitation: 7 to 9 tonight, at the funeral home.

Linda L. Purdy
1942-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. Linda Lee (Crain) Purdy, 57, Atchison, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Purdy had been employed by the Continental Can Co. in Lenexa, Kan., and Benedictine College of Atchison. She also had worked for the Midwest Grain Co. in Atchison from 1988 until leaving in 1998 due to ill health.
Born in Kansas City, Kan., on Jan. 25, 1942, she was graduated from the Wyandotte High School and attended the First Baptist Church in Atchison. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and Auxiliaries to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts, all of Atchison.
On March 3, 1962, she married Max G. Purdy in Kansas City, Kan. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Purdy was preceded in death by a son, Glen R.; her father, Elmer L. Crain; her mother-in-law, Edith E. Cavanaugh, who had made her home with them; and a brother, Butch Crain.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Brenda Henning, Atchison; her mother, Beatrice Crain, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, David Crain, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; three sisters, Anna Arwine, Las Vegas, Nev., and Gloria Knight and Sandy Crain, both of Kansas City, Kan.; four grandchildren.
Memorial service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. The body has been cremated. Inurnment: Chapel Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Kan. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Atchison County Hospice.

Carmen E. Strange
1923-1999
CHILLICOTHE, Mo. Carmen E. Strange, 75, Chillicothe, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, in Meadville, Mo.
Mr. Strange, a farmer, also had served in the Army from 1944 to 1948 during World War II.
Born in Bagnell, Mo., on Aug. 6, 1923, he was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Chillicothe.
On Oct. 29, 1948, he married Velma L. Schneiter in Meadville. She survives of the home.
Mr. Strange was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis E. and Anna L.; a brother, Vincent; and an infant sister.
Additional survivor: a sister, Pauline Pope, Kansas City.
Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe. Burial: Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Chillicothe. Visitation: noon to 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 47, Chillicothe, Mo., 64601.

Gus E. Strauss
1915-1999
FALLS CITY, Neb. Gus E. Strauss, 84, Falls City, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at the Falls City hospital.
Mr. Strauss had been employed by Edde Motors in the body shop and mechanic repair from 1936 to 1960 and the Krumme Construction Co. from 1960 to 1969. He also had worked for the Belmont Casket Manufacturing Co. from 1969 to 1975 and the George F. Rolfs Manufacturing Co. from 1975 until retiring in 1980.
Born in Straussville, Neb., on Jan. 26, 1915, he was reared on farms in Straussville and northeast of the Falls City area until age 12 when his family moved into Falls City.
He was a graduate of the Falls City high school and served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Strauss was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1765 and American Legion Post No. 102, both of Falls City.
On May 28, 1947, he married June M. Bowman in Hiawatha, Kan. They made their home in Reserve, Kan. and later moved to Falls City. She survives of the home.
Mr. Strauss was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Bertha; a sister, Wilma Balow; and a brother, Herman.
Additional survivors: a daughter, Sue A. Slater, Maryville, Mo.; a son, Gary, Springfield, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
Service: 11 a.m. Monday, Dorr Funeral Home, Falls City. Burial: Steele Cemetery, Falls City.

Leila I. Thomas
1904-1999
PRINCETON, Mo. Leila Ione (Miller) Gamet Thomas, 94, Princeton, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at the Liberty, Mo., hospital.
Mrs. Thomas and her husband, Dale Gamet, had owned and operated The Supply Store, which later became Hy-Vee, in Princeton. Later the couple owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Princeton from 1955 until retiring in the 1960s.
Born in Defiance, Iowa, on July 13, 1904, she a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pleasanton, Iowa, of which she was an ordained priest.
She was a former member of the board for the Mercer County, Mo., Senior Citizens Center; Green Hills Council on Aging advisory board; Rebekah Lodge; Order of the Eastern Star; P.E.O. Sisterhood; and Business and Professional Women's Club, all of Princeton. Mrs. Thomas also was a past member of the Princeton Country Club, of which she a former president of the ladies division; Princeton Chamber of Commerce, of which she was a past president and secretary-treasurer; and Princeton Rotary Club, of which she was the first woman member and served as pianist.
On Jan. 29, 1923, she married Dale A. Gamet in Woodbine, Iowa. They moved to Princeton in 1933; Creston, Iowa, in 1951; and returned to Princeton in 1955. He died in 1981.
Then she married William J. Thomas. The couple moved to Fort Madison, Iowa, and returned to Princeton in 1996. He also died.
Mrs. Thomas also was preceded in death by her parents, Rolly R. and Elsie B. Miller; and a brother, Vene Miller.
Surviving: a son, Bill Gamet, Princeton; a stepson, Steve Thomas, Freeport, Ill.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel, Princeton. Burial: Princeton Cemetery. Visitation: after 8 a.m. today, at the funeral chapel. There is no scheduled family visitation.

S. Earl Wickam
1920-1999
HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio Shelby Earl Wickam, 79, Huber Heights, formerly of St. Joseph, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
Mr. Wickam retired as a senior master sergeant in the Air Force after 20 years. He also had worked as a civil employee at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base as historian for 15 years and as a substitute teacher in the Dayton area.
He was the co-author of ``From Huffman Prairie to the Moon,'' a history of the Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
Born in Kansas City on March 24, 1920, he left St. Joseph to join the military. He was a member of the American Legion in Dayton.
Mr. Wickam was preceded in death by a son, Shelby Jr.; and his parents, Charles A. and Edna C.
Surviving: his wife, Hisako of the home; a son, Donald, League City, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Private family inurnment: at a later date, in the Dayton National Cemetery. The body has been cremated. Arrangements: Marker & Heller Funeral Home, Huber Heights.

John Lakey
1926-1999
PLATTSBURG, Mo. -- John Lakey, 72, Plattsburg, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at a health-care center in Plattsburg.
Mr. Lakey had worked for the Vendo Co. in Kansas City, farmed and was a real estate broker. He also had been employed by the Internal Revenue Service until retiring in 1994.
Born in Parkville, Mo., on Aug. 5, 1926, he lived in Kansas City from 1950 until moving to Cameron, Mo., in 1973, Mirabile, Mo., in 1979 and Plattsburg in 1984.
Mr. Lakey was a member St. Ann's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Plattsburg, of which he was a past district deputy. During World War II, he served in the Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Blanche; and a sister, Marie Arndt.
Surviving: his wife, Rose Mary of the home; a son, Ronnie of the home; and a brother, Kenneth, Kansas City.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Ann's Catholic Church, Plattsburg. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Plattsburg. Rosary: 7 tonight, at the Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg, where the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight.

Verda M. Larabee
1912-1999
SHENANDOAH, Iowa Verda Mae (Younger) Larabee, 86, Shenandoah, formerly of Elmo, Mo., died Monday, April 26, at a health-care center in Shenandoah.
Mrs. Larabee had been employed by the Sno-White Laundry for several years and in the linen department of the Hand Community Hospital, both in Shenandoah, for more than 25 years.
Born in Elmo on Oct. 4, 1912, she had lived on a farm near Elmo. She attended school through her sophomore year at the Elmo high school and in her early years had been a housekeeper.
Mrs. Larabee was a member of the Methodist Church in Elmo and First Christian Church of Shenandoah.
On Aug. 21, 1929, she married Harold E. Larabee in Clarinda, Iowa. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Larabee was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd A. and Virgil Mae Younger; four brothers, James, Charles, Raymond and Glen Younger; and a sister, Eva Merriott.
Additional survivors: two daughters, Darlene Kemper, Hamburg, Iowa, and Margaret Hein, Essex, Iowa; a sister, Ida M. Younger, Carthage, N.C.; a brother, Richard R. Younger, Carthage; five grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Christian Church, Shenandoah. Burial: Union Grove Cemetery, near Northboro, Iowa. Family visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home, Shenandoah. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or Elm Heights Care Center, both of Shenandoah.

Harry F. Losson Jr.
1921-1999
HIGHLAND, Kan. Harry F. Losson Jr., 78, Highland, formerly of Troy, Kan. died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a Highland health-care center.
Mr. Losson was lifelong resident of Troy where he worked as a farm laborer and at the Doniphan County Sheltered Workshop at Bendena and Troy, Kan.
Born Feb. 8, 1921, in Troy, Kan., Mr. Losson was of the Christian faith.
Mr. Losson was preceded in death by his parents, Harry F.Sr. and Anna M.; and two brothers, Joe and Glen.
Surviving: two sisters, Esther Weis, Troy, Kan., and Sandra Mills, Goose Creek, S.C.; and a brother, Gary, DeBeque, Colo.
Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Troy, Kan. Burial: Mount Olive Cemetery, Troy. Visitation: 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Peggy J. Moore
1929-1999
RUSHVILLE, Mo. Peggy JoAnn (Callaway) Moore, 69, Rushville, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at her residence.
Mrs. Moore had been employed as a seamstress at the Atchison Leather Products in Atchison, Kan.
Born in St. Joseph on Sept. 5, 1929, she had lived most of her life in Rushville. She attended the Rushville Christian Church.
On Dec. 13, 1946, she married Wallace W. Moore in Troy, Kan. He died in 1994.
Mrs. Moore also was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Beatrice Callaway.
Surviving: six sons, William W., Navanae, Fla., Larry E., Knob Noster, Mo., Robert L., Weston, Mo., Ricky L., Leavenworeth, Kan., Michael K., Cantonment, Fla., and Rod A., Rushville; two daughters, Deborah J. Rangel, Bellevue, Neb., and Lisa E. Rapson, Rushville; two brothers, Gene A. Callaway, St.Joseph, and Jack P. Callaway, Atchison; a sister, Pat L. Justice, Elwood; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Clark-Sampson Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville. Visitation: after 2 p.m. today, at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials may be made to the Hands of Hope Hospice or Kidney Foundation.

Geraldine N. Powell
1907-1999
Geraldine N. (Haynes) Powell, 92, St. Joseph, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Stewartsville, Mo., on April 2, 1907, Mrs. Powell had lived in St. Joseph for most of her life.
She was a member of the Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph.
Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar R., in 1968; her parents, Benjamin and Margaret Haynes; and a brother, Hubert Haynes.
Surviving: a son, Loren W., St. Joseph; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service and burial: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Auburn Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 6 to 8 tonight, at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph.

Melvin V. Philipp
1919-1999
Melvin V. Philipp, 80, St. Joseph, died Sunday April 18, 1999, at a St. Joseph health-care center after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Philipp farmed with his father, Gustave, in Wathena, Kan. He also worked for Swift and Co. from 1945 to 1977 and later as a janitor for the former Westab, now Mead Products, both of St. Joseph.
Born in Wathena on Feb. 11, 1919, he lived in St. Joseph for most of his life.
During World War II, Mr. Philipp served in the Navy. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Macdonald-Dugger-Duncan-Petrie American Legion Post No. 11, Cpl. Fred Seifert Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1668, Farm Bureau Association, Aid Association of Lutherans and Lutheran Laymen's League.
Mr. Philipp was preceded in death by his parents, Gustave A. and Anna L.; seven brothers, Carl, Donald, Armond, Theodore, Herbert, Anton and Reinhold; and three sisters, Gertrude Folsche, Agnes Fisher and Anna Benitz.
Surviving: his wife, the former Elizabeth W. Bruhn of the home; and two sisters, Fredericka Walsh, Lenexa, Kan., and Lydia St. Clair, Maryville, Mo.
Service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Joseph. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Family visitation: 6:30 to 8 tonight at Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Joseph.

Ivan A. Salsbury
1917-1999
KING CITY, Mo. -- Ivan A. Salsbury, 81, King City, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at a health-care center in King City.
Mr. Salsbury was a farmer and carpenter until retiring in 1986.
Born in Pueblo, Colo., on Dec. 4, 1917, he lived there for several years until moving to Rea, Mo., in 1974 and King City in 1984.
On June 4, 1939, he married Virginia J. Townsend in Rush, Colo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Salsbury was preceded in death by a daughter, Ginger L. Straub; his parents, Albert A. and Nora A.; three brothers, Hez, Ralph and Fred; and a sister, Pearl Williams.
Additional survivors: two sons, Ivan and Donald D., both of Bolckow, Mo.; a daughter, Patricia J. Golding, Karval, Colo.; a brother, Archie, Stanberry, Mo.; a sister, Goldie Harman, Savannah, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and a step-grandchild.
Graveside service and burial: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Walnut Grove Cemetery, northwest of Whitesville, Mo. Visitation: after 8 a.m. today at the Gibson Funeral Home, King City. There is no scheduled family visitation. Memorials may be made to Camp Quality in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 552, King City, MO 64463.
