J.C. GIBBS
J.C. Gibbs, 56, was born on May 9, 1945, in Mammoth Springs, AR. He passed away on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital.
J.C. was an auctioneer for many years. He was also a police officer in El Dorado Springs and operated J & H Auto Salvage for many years. He loved the outdoors and liked to go hunting and fishing.
J.C. was preceded in death by his father, his mother and his wife, Shirley. He is survived by his daughter, JoBeth Harrelson, and her husband, Harold-Walker; two sisters, Wanda Smith- Independence and Lucille Powers-Harrisonville; and three grandsons-Leslie, Jay and Justin.
Services were held on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 9 in the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Brent Bland officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jay Harrelson, Kenneth Herra, Herman Ellison, Truman Ellison, Terry Smith and Nevada; four grandchildren-Kimberly Jo Deneve, Roy Adam Deneve, Jeffry Dennison and Jaron Dennison; and one great grandson, Braxton Scott Deneve.
The body has been cremated under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home.

STANLEY SHIRO SETO
Stanley Shiro Seto, 86, the fourth son of Gosaku and Toi Soto, died on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the Community Springs Nursing Home.
He was born on Aug. 19, 1915, at Waimea, Kauai, HI. He graduated from Waimea High School and worked as a mechanic at the sugar plantation until his retirement in 1977.
He married Tamae Sakai and they raised three daughters- Karen Shibuya-Waimea, HI, Sandra Eaves-El Dorado Springs, and Renee Douglas-Bend, OR.
Stanley's hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, reading westerns, gardening and swimming. He was well known on Kauai for raising delicious mangoes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and one sister. Survivors include his two brothers; three sisters; his three daughters; his son-in-laws, Yukio Shibuya and Robert Eaves; eight grandchildren-Darren, Michelle, Shane and Sheldon Shibuya, Olin Eaves, Jennifer and Ryan and Christopher Douglas; and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation and arrangements were under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Services will be held in Hawaii at a later date.

LEOTA LOUISE TURNER
Leota Louise Turner, 87, Kansas City, peacefully went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at the home of her daughter.
Services were Saturday, Dec. 15, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel with burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. The family suggests contributions to Centropolis Community Church or to NorthCare Hospice.
Leota was born April 17, 1914, in El Dorado Springs. She married and moved to Kansas City in 1939. She was a long-time member of Centropolis Baptist Church and faithfully served as preschool Sunday School teacher for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Laura (DeLozier) Kennedy and eight brothers and sisters. Mrs. Turner is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, John W. Turner, of the home; daughter, Kathy Francis, and husband, Lou-Gladstone; grandchildren-Brett Francis and wife, Erin-Olathe, KS, Emily and Mary Beth Francis-both Gladstone; a brother, Glenn Kennedy-Blue Springs; and a host of nieces and nephews and dear friends.

DONNA MAE MELTON
Donna Mae Melton, 64, El Dorado Springs, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Nebraska City, NE, to Franklin “Pete” Simms and Helen Iva Simms.
Donna retired from the TX. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two sisters, Virginia Storm and Patricia Davis, both of Omaha, NE.
Services were held on Friday afternoon, Dec. 14, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Doug Houdyshell officiating. Musical selections were provided by Virginia Storm. Interment was in the Clintonville Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Rex Allen Hunter, John Davis Jr., Health Daulton, Michael Overton, Robbie McClure and John Flores.

CLARENCE THEODORE HICKS
Clarence Theodore Hicks, 71, El Dorado Springs, was born on April 12, 1930, and passed away at his home on Dec. 14, 2001. Clarence was the son of Artie T. Hicks and Ruth E. “Lizzie” Pike Hicks. He graduated from the El Dorado Springs High School in 1948 and immediately went to work for Carnation Milk Plant.
For the most part of his working career, Clarence owned and operated the Hicks Oil Company and Bait Shop in El Dorado Springs. After retirement, he loved hunting, fishing and his cattle. Clarence enjoyed his farm where he could be outside gardening and the simple nature that God blesses us with.
Clarence was a devoted Christian and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. He always made sure that nothing came before his attendance at services. For several years, he was involved with the Olympia Fire Department and so enjoyed that association.
Clarence's children and grandchildren were very special to him and they looked up to him with compassion.
In 1969, Clarence was married to Donna Barker Swager. Along with Donna's two children and his three, there was seldom a dull moment. Clarence enjoyed visiting and had many friends.
God surely saved a special place for Clarence in His heavenly kingdom because no one would deserve it more.
Preceding Clarence in death were his parents and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Donna, of the home; two sons, James W. Hicks, his wife, Patty-Warrensburg and Carl Swager and Jessie-El Dorado Springs; three daughters-Linda Hicks-El Dorado Springs, Sharon Weber and her husband, Earl-Bentonville, AR, and Teresa Simpson and her husband, Jerry-El Dorado Springs; 14 grandchildren-James, Travis, Coy, Cody, Blake, Austin, Derrick, Samantha, Cheryl, Christina, Jennifer, Jamie, Jeremy and Alfonso; and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Lawrence Hicks, and his wife, Delores-El Dorado Springs; one sister, Alean Wright, and her husband, Jim-Wichita, KS; his father and mother-in-law, Donald and Neva Barker-Stockton; several nieces, nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law and a host of friends.
God blesses those that love Him with many friends and a cherished family. Clarence had them all.
Services were held on Tuesday morning, Dec. 18, at the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Mike Pace and David Studer officiating. Musical selections were provided by the Church of Christ singers. Interment was in the El Dorado Springs Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Don Witt, Dwain Witt, Pete Fast, Donnie Fletcher, Greg Allison, Joe Barger, Bruce Walker and Bill Bishop. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Brode, Andy Gonzalez, Gary Bruce, Jack Elliott, Roger Foster and Jesse Watts.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Olympia Fire Department.

DONNA MAE MELTON

RUSS HAMMOND
Russ Hammond, 88, was born Feb. 10, 1933, near Bentonville, MO, to Glen and Lucy Hammond, who preceded him in death. He passed away Dec. 12, 2001.
He attended his first year of school at Shiloh. Then the family moved to a farm near Weaubleau where he attended school. He was able to enjoy a 50th class reunion with his schoolmates - class of 1951 - a few months ago.
At age 17, Russ joined the U.S. Navy, serving on destroyers during the Korean Conflict and visiting 28 countries before he was 21.
In July of 1955, he was united in marriage to Mary Alice Bailey of Osceola. After spending a few months working in Kansas City they moved to southern California, Russ retired in 1986. They spent time in El Dorado Springs, Hemet, CA and eventually settled down in Osceola in 1995. Where he felt very much at home and very welcomed by the peopel here. He enjoyed being in the woods, picking raspberries and blackberries and hunting mushrooms. He even enjoyed a little hunting and fishing.
Russ enjoyed reading in front of his fireplace on cold winter days. His main hobby was woodworking, carving and redoing old pieces of furniture. He was a fine craftsman and owners of his work are proud to display his canes, clocks and carvings.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of the home, many relatives and a multitude of friends. He will be missed.
Services were held Sunday, Dec. 16, in Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola. Ministers were Rev. Paul Milliken and Fr. Larry Lewis. Music was by Tom Willoughby was “Church in the Wildwood” and “Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown”. Casketbearers were Sean Sheldon, Jerry Shelby, Kirk Shelby, Arthur Gordon, John Bausum, Ray Higgins, Dale Pasley and Ray Tipton. Interment was in the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery.
