DAVID L. JOHNSON
David (Dave) L. Johnson, 83, Stockton, was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Sedalia, the son of Claud and Della Mae Johnson, and passed away to his eternal rest Thursday, June 24, 2004, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was saved at the First Baptist Church, Ash Grove, and was a member.
He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II.
Dave married Goldie Richardson and they were blessed with four sons and three daughters.
Dave was a mechanic and split bottom chair maker. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and watching football games.
He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his moment to be with them all. He will forever be remembered and missed dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Roger Dale Johnson; two brothers, Floyd (Bud) Johnson and Glen Johnson; and one sister, Dixie Butler.
Survivors include three sons and their wives - Dennis and Carol Johnson - El Dorado Springs, and Donnie and Shirley Johnson and Jerry and Jamie Johnson - all of Humansville; three daughters and their husbands - Sharon and Joe Freeze - Fair Play, Beverly and John Frank - Stockton and Sue Baker - Bolivar; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; his former wife, Goldie Goodson; two brothers, Charlie, and his wife-Mabel Johnson - Buffalo, and Harl and his wife-Patty Johnson - Dunnegan; two sisters, Eulea - Excelsior Springs, and Mary and Sidney Sanders - Nevada, to Joseph Hacker and Estella Pearl Palmer Hacker and passed away Sunday, June 27, 2004, in the Cedar County Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
Mary Ann grew up in the Walker area and graduated from Walker High School in 1964 where she was an outstanding softball and basketball player. She was instrumental in forming the Nevada, Schell City and Springfield leagues. The team also traveled in the four state areas and was ranked as one of the top teams. She played in 25 state and regional softball tournaments. She became the first woman registered MSHSAA official in this area. She refereed and umpired for 16 years in Southwest Nevada for 15 years.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her father and mother; one sister, Jane Hacker; and one brother, Sam Hacker.
Survivors include three nieces - Sheri Hacker - Malta Bend, MO, Shelly Sawchak - Springfield, and Sheila Cook - Carthage; five great-nephews - Hayden, Masen and Dawsen Cook - all of Carthage, and Sam and Aaron Sawchak - both of Springfield; one sister-in-law, Susie Bradley - Jasper; numerous cousins; and close friends.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 1, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada the only child of Gordon Murrah and Thelma Bernice (Strader) Hill, and passed from this life on Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Mt. Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg, KS.
Early in his life, Larry, along with his family, moved to Schell City where he graduated from high school in 1957. He then moved to the Lee's Summit area and began employment with AT&T where he worked as a pipefitter, retiring in 1990 after 30 years. After retirement he moved to El Dorado Springs.
On May 20, 2002, he married Sharon Elaine Snyder. Together they made their home in Arma, KS.
Larry was a member of the Pipefitters Union; CWA; and the AT&T Pioneers. His hobbies included collecting model trains; model International farm tractors and models of sprint roadsters. He was well known for his accomplished singing and guitar playing. One of his greatest loves was his association in the nationally recognized Single Action Shooting Society.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon - of the home; his mother, Thelma Hill - Pittsburg, KS; three sons - Larry Alan Hill and James Douglas Hill - both of Lee's Summit, and Steven Gordon Hill - of Kansas City; one step-son, Jeremy Michael Long - Austin, California; three grandchildren; three brothers and their wives - Dennis and Carol Johnson - El Dorado Springs, Donnie and Shirley Johnson and Jerry and Jamie Johnson - all of Humansville; three sisters - Sharon and Joe Freeze - Fair Play, Beverly and John Frank - Stockton, and Sue Baker - Bolivar; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held Thursday, June 24, in the Lindley Prairie Cemetery, Stockton with Rev. Bob Ahart officiating under direction of Brumback Funeral Home, Stockton.

Mary Ellen Taylor Belcher
Mary Ellen Taylor Belcher, 84, El Dorado Springs, was born Dec. 31, 1919, to George A. and Laura R. Taylor, Kansas City, and passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, in Cedar County Memorial Hospital, El Dorado Springs.
She resided in Nevada and Orrick-Richmond for most of her younger years.
She married George McMullin in 1934. To this union a daughter, Marian L. McMullin (Kahler), and a son, Lawrence H. McMullin, were born.
Mary married Robert W. Belcher in 1945. They soon moved to El Dorado Springs and lived most of their 50 years of married life there.
Mary spent her life helping others; gardening, canning and working on the farm. She loved to quilt and made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.
She accepted Christ as her Savior in February of 1996 at Union Hall Baptist Church.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She leaves behind her daughter and son; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; eight sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mary will be sadly missed by all.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Hackleman Chapel with Rev. Derl Hicks officiating. Interment was in Hazel Dell Cemetery under direction of Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home, El Dorado Springs.
Pallbearers were Mark White, Meredith Parrish, Laurel Mays, Earl Miles, Randy Copenhaver and Stan Vilhauer.

DORIS HOPE PETERIE BURTON
Doris Hope Peterie Burton, 86, was born Aug. 27, 1918, in Cedar County to John and Charley Mae Rand Peterie and departed peacefully to be with her Saviour on Sept. 18, 2004, at St. John's Hospital in Lebanon. Doris had just celebrated her 86th birthday with her family.
She was saved at the old Missionary Baptist Church in Caplinger Mills when she was 13 years old. Doris was baptized into the fellowship of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful member as long as health premitted. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing songs of her Saviour.
Doris graduated from Stockton High School in 1938 as valedictorian of her class.
She and Leo Burton were married on March 31, 1940, by Bro, C.A. Wynes. Leo and Doris lived on a farm north of Stockton over 50 years before moving to Stockton. She was a devoted homemaker who spent many hours caring for her family. Doris always had a big garden and spent many hours sewing, cleaning and cooking for her family. As the family grew to include daughters-in-law; a son-in-law; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, each had a favorite food they loved to eat at Grandma's.
Doris and her husband, Leo, had 61 years together before Leo died suddenly on April 19, 2001.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Owen; and sister, Dimple.
Survivors included her three children and spouses - Larry and Jane Burton - Ozark, Diana and Jerry Crain - Lebanon, and Jerry and Pat Burton - Urbana; six grandchildren - Andrea, Scott, Gina, Beth, Brian and Chad; eight great-grandchildren - Ashli, Garrett, Hannah, Brooke, William, Paige, Holly Hope and Emily; nieces, Marsha, and Elaine; and nephew, Wayne.
The great-grandchildren always brought a smile to her face and were very dear to her heart. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed their visits.
Her greatest desire was for all of them to be saved and meet her again someday.
Doris was lovingly cared for the last four months of her life by Darlene Lindsay.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. There will be a vacancy that can never be filled.
Services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 21, in the Mt. Enon Baptist Church with burial in the Stockton Cemetery under the direction of Brumback Funeral Home, Stockton.
