E.A. Cooper

E.A. "Lefty" Cooper, 76, of Malden, Mo., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at his residence.

Born Dec. 6, 1926, in Malden, son of the late Hubert and Maggie Price Cooper, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, owner/operator of Just Rite Cleaners, Ship Ahoy Bowling Lane and Malden Roofing, all in Malden and attended the Presbyterian Church. He served on the Malden Airport Board, was a member of the Rotary Club and coached little league.

On Oct. 26, 1946, in Piggott, Ark., he married Patricia B. Mills, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include one daughter, Debby Wiseman and husband, Mike, of Clarkton, Mo.; three sons, Barry Cooper and wife, Gaye, of Dexter, Mo., Michael Cooper, of Campbell, Mo. and Charles Cooper and wife, Karen, of Malden; one sister, Laviece Koengeter, of Malden; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Cynthia Ann Cooper; six brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bill Jackson and Bill Mills officiating.

Burial will follow at the Resewood cemetery-1st Addition in Malden.

Memorials may be made to the Malden Little League, c/o Ron Golden, 1004 Alberta, Malden, Mo. 63863.

Jerry Grills

Jerry Wayne Grills, 49, of Sikeston, Mo., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center.

Born Jan. 10, 1954, in Bragg City, Mo., son of Jim Woods, of Bragg City and the late Neva Jo Grills, he worked for Barton Lumber Co. and was a school bus driver for Sikeston Public Schools. He was a member of the Sikeston Eagles Lodge and of the Baptist faith.

On April 5, 1974, in Kennett, he married Ulonda Robards, who survives of the home. Survivors also include one son, Jason Crawford, of Sikeston; one daughter, Rhonda Dalton, of Sikeston; one sister, Sue Avery, of Morehouse and three grandchildren Jessica Beeson and Amanda Dalton, both of Sikeston and Steven Taylor, of Morehouse.

No services are planned. Nunnelee Funeral Chapel of Sikeston is in charge of arrangements.

Minnie McGuire

Minnie McGuire, 86, of Malden, Mo., died today, Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Malden Nursing Center.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete with the Landess Funeral Home of Malden.

Luther Ogden

Luther William Ogden, 85, of Gideon, Mo., died Friday, June 6, 2003, at the Gideon Care Center.

Born Dec. 23, 1917, in Formosa, Ark., son of the late Alford Lester and Florence Mae McKim Ogden, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII and was a truck driver.

In 1957, in Hernando, Miss., he maried Margaret Launius, who survives.

Survivors also include three sons, Earnest Vandiver, of Terrell, Texas, Gerald Vandiver, of Cape Girardeau, Mo. and Luther W. Ogden, Jr., of Gideon; two daughters, Patsy Marie and Nina Ogden, both of Malden, Mo.; five brothers, Lester Ogden, of Gideon, William Ogden, of Wentzville, Mo., Charles Ogden, of O'Fallon, Ill., Dale Ogden, of Kennett and Cecil Ogden, of Joplin, Mo.; two sisters, Betty Lou Goings, of Gideon and Lena Mae Ice, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman and Dallas Ogden and one sister, Evelyn Young.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel in Gideon with the Rev. Cleo Payne officiating.

Burial was in the Stanfield cemetery at Clarkton, Mo.

Maylene Phillips

Maylene Phillips, 66, of Arbyrd, Mo., died today, Tuesday, June 10, at the Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 10, at the McDaniel Fuenral Home in Arbyrd.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Lulu Baptist Church with the Rev. David Powell officiating.

Burial will follow at the Lulu cemetery in Senath.  Lena Strader

Lena Strader, 91, of Senath, Mo., formerly of Cardwell, Mo., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould, Ark.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Arbyrd.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the Cardwell cemetery.

Bertha Thompson

Bertha May Thompson, 67, of Kennett, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Born Jan. 24, 1936, in Dell, Ark., she was the daughter of the late James and Bessie Rhymer Rollins.

She married Joseph H. Thompson, who preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Charles Crowe, of Batesville, Ark. and Larry Temple, of East Prairie, Mo.; four daughters, Shirley McMullen, of Gideon, Mo., Joan Cleaves, of Mississippi, Mollie Crowe, of Alabama and Darlene Tholman, of Fredericktown, Mo.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 10, at the Gregory cemetery in Kennett with the Rev. Larry Portwood officiating.

Pallbearers were Harold and Ricky Lowry, Brandon Crane, Larry Temple, Travis Burnett and Danny McMillen.

McDaniel Funeral Home of Kennett was in charge of arrangements.

Evaline Thornbrough

Evaline Thornbrough, 97, of Gideon, Mo., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Gideon Care Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1905, in Greenville, Ill., daughter of the late Samuel David and Anna Bingham Elam, she was a homemaker, teacher and a member of the First Methodist Church in Gideon.

In 1927, in Gideon, she married Paul Thornbrough, who preceded her in death on April 7, 1968. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Godsey; one son, David Thornbrough; two grandsons, Michael Thornbrough and Ted Polen; three brothers, Roy F. Elam, Sr., Orrin and Victor Elam and one sister, Aline McDonald.

Survivors include one daughter, Paula J. Polen, of Malden, Mo.; one son, Bill Thornbrough; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 10, at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Allen officiating.

Burial will follow at the Stanfield cemetery in Clarkton.

Charles Turlington

Charles Grundy Turlington, 90, of Dexter, Mo., died Monday, June 9, at the Cypress Point Health Care in Dexter.

Born April 28, 1913, in Dexter, son of the late Charles and Emma May Hammond Turlington, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in WWII, a painter and a former maintenance employee for the Dexter Post Office. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dexter, the Kenady-Hanks American Legion Post #59, the NARFE Postal Association and a member of the Southeast Missouri Baseball Hall of Fame.

On Sept. 5, 1936, in Bloomfield, Mo., he married Dorris May Eaton, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include one son, Terry Turlington, of Kennett and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Turlington and one sister, Zoe Campbell.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 10, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Kennedy officiating.

Burial will follow at the Dexter cemetery.

Robert Duty

Robert E. Duty, 74, of Transylvania, La., formerly of Cardwell, Mo., died Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Olive Branch Care Center in Tallulah, La.

Born July 3, 1928, in Desha, Ark., son of the late Sherman and Ida Ferrell Duty, he was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Duty, of Transylvania; one daughter, Ida Lisa Boyers, of Seminole, Fla.; one step-son, Louis Harold Jones, of Oak Grove, La.; one step-daughter, LouAnn McDaniel, of Chandler, Texas; three brothers, Roger Dale Duty, of Arbyrd, Mo., Donald Ray Duty, of Elsinore, Calif. and Jerry Wayne Duty, of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Dorothy Jean Lewis, of Vallejo, Calif. and Vondean Swink, of Tuscon, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman "Bud" and William Duty and two sisters, Magdalene Hughes and Sarah Jane Lewis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Lake Providence, La. with the Rev. Stowe Harbin officiating.

Burial will follow at the Providence Memorial cemetery.

Pallbearers are Freddy and Michael Eubanks, Nathan Lily, David Lee, Allen and Tomothy Duty and Ralph Wayne Lovell.

Dawsey Hollis

Dawsey Hollis, 83, of Puxico, Mo., died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Mo.

Born March 14, 1920, in Bernie, Mo., son of the late Jim and Alma Virginia Hopgood Hollis, he was a farmer and a log hauler.

On July 22, 1939, in Gideon, Mo., he married Geneva McGinely, who preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 1990. He was also preceded in death by one son, William Dawsey Hollis; two daughters, Shirley Taylor and Geraldine McCarthy; three grandchildren; six brothers, three in infancy and Alec, Ralph and Frank Hollis and three sisters, Lillie Hollis, Juanita Shrum and Halcyon Sanders.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosie Luttrell, of Poplar Bluff, Mo. and Virginia Gray, of Malden, Mo.; one sister, Dicie Whiffen, of Poplar Bluff; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 11, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow at the Bernie cemetery.

Floyd Mangrum

Floyd Eugene Mangrum, 66, of Cardwell, Mo., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Senath Nursing Home in Senath, Mo.

Born May 5, 1937, in Lauratown, Ark., son of the late Jesse Eugene and Eula Ingram Mangrum, he was an auto body repairman and a member of the Cochrum Church of Christ in Cardwell.

On Aug. 25, 1960, in St. Louis, Mo., he married Truley Barnes, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include two sons, Wendell Mangrum and wife, Josephine, of Jonesboro, Ark. and Richard Mangrum and wife, Tonya, of Paragould, Ark.; two daughters, Christina Dickerson and husband, James, of Carmi, Ill. and Kathi West and husband, David, of Baumholder, Germany; two brothers, Donald Mangrum, of Senath and Junior Mangrum, of Cardwell; two sisters, Jacqualyn Rice, of Paragould and Phyllis Mangrum, of Kennett and five grandchildren, Amy Mangrum, Joshua Dickerson, David Lee and Shelby West and Danielle Baily.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Jesse and James William Mangrum.

Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 11, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at the Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with Herbert Knight and Dwight Harrison officiating.

Burial will follow at the Cardwell cemetery.

Pallbearers are Mike Wilson, Jason Casinger, Wayne Maple, Kailen Free, Steve Russell and Ronnie Rios.

Honorary pallbearers are Larry Pannells, Phillip Miller and John Jackson.
