Billy Hopper Sr.

Billy R. Hopper Sr., 72, of Arbyrd, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Covenant Health Care Center in Saginaw, Mich.

Born Aug. 19, 1930, in Arbyrd, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He lived in the Flint, Mich. area 35 years and was retired from General Motors. He was serving a second term as mayor of Arbyrd at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Louise, of the home; a daughter, Sherry Bragg and husband, Michael of Durand, Mich.; two sisters, Shirley Overman of Blytheville, Ark., and Toni Burwell, of Knoxville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Billy Hopper III, Angel Hulett, Randy Hopper, David Bailey, Amy Roach and Carrie Hopper; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Hopper Jr., daughter-in-law, Kathy Hopper and a brother, Bobby Hopper.

Private graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at Thetford Township cemetery with the Rev. Clint Peters officiating.

Memorial gifts may be offered to the family.

Marcille Jones

Marcille Jones, 84, of Bernie, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Mo.

Born June 23, 1918, in Bernie, daughter of the late George and Minnie Fonville Jones, she worked at Malden Grain Company and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bernie.

Survivors include one sister, Georgena Kilosick, of Covina, Calif. and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Eva Kincade, Edna Mae Jones and Naomi Murphy and one brother, William Jones.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home Chapel in Bernie with the Rev. O.H. Brooks officiating.

Burial was in the Bernie cemetery.

Dan Lell

Dan H. Lell, 78, of Senath, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Born June 13, 1924, in Senath, son of the late Earl and Ruth Holligan Lell, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in WWII.

On Dec. 30, 1944, in Paragould, Ark., he married Velma Whitlock, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include one son, Jim Lell, of Edwardsville, Ill.; one daughter, Danna Fach and husband, Robert, of St. Charles, Mo.; one granddaughter, Lynna Aubuchon and two great-grandchildren, Danielle and Emma Aubuchon.He was preceded in death by one sister, Pat Mullen.

Funeral servicecs were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Denny Brown officiating.

Burial was in the Lulu cemetery.

Pallbearers were Sam Massey, Troy Daniels, Steve Westmorland, Bobby Stark and Bobby and Kevin McGrew.

Herman Mizell

Herman W. Mizell, 87, of Conway, Ark., formerly of Cardwell, Mo., died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at his residence.

Born Oct. 29, 1918, in Senath, Mo., he was the son of the late William L. and Ollie May Mizell.

He married Doshie Killian, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by two brothers Horace "Doc" and Paul Mizell and two infant sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Patty Cooper and husband, John, of Conway; two granddaughters, Lauri Thomas and Lisa Rice, of Rogers Ark.; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie Thomas and Adam Rice, both of Rogers; one sister, Irene Doherty and three nieces, Judy Doherty and Janice Hyde, both of Paragould, Ark. and Sharon Eddington, of Arbyrd, Mo.

A family visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Fist Baptist Church in Cardwell.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at the Memorial Gardens cemetery in Paragould.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Conway Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Sawyer

Margaret Katherine Sawyer, 89, of Guntersville, Ala., formerly of Caruthersville, Mo., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Mmarshall Medical Center North in Guntersville.

Born Jan. 9, 1913, in Beebe, Ark., daughter of the late McHenry L. and Lucia Griffin Milner, she was a homemaker, co-manager of the Golden Rule Shop in Caruthersville and a member of the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the PEO and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems in Hayti, Mo.

On Jan. 3, 1933, in Blytheville, Ark., she married John W. "Spud" Sawyer, who preceded her in death on Aug. 23, 1997. She was also preceded in death by two twin brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann Sawyer Jones, of Guntersville and Margaret "Patty" Sawyer Sommerkamp, of Caruthersville; four grandchildren, Lissa Jones Brown, of Guntersville, Andrea Jones Thompson, of Boaz, Ala., Buck Sommerkamp, of Lee's Summit, Mo. and Margaret "Meg" Sommerkamp Childers, of Caruthersville and seven great-grandchildren, Alan Sawyer and Sarah Katherine Brown, both of Caruthersville, John Garland, Dylan Anderson and Lee Hayden Thompson, all of Boaz and John Alexander and Stephen Andrew Sommerkamp, both of Lee's Summit.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec, 31, at the Eastwood Memorial United Methodist Church in Caruthersville with the Rev. Dwight Chapman and Rev. Dr. Paul Currie officiating.

Burial was in the Little Prairie cemetery at Caruthersville.

Pallbearers were Fred Hardy, Jiggs Dodd, William Townsend, Gearl Adams, Joe Parkinson and Jim Atchison.

H.S. Smith Funeral Home of Caruthersville was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Townes

Elizabeth Geneva Townes, 69, of Malden, Mo., died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Born Feb. 24, 1933, in Summer, Miss. daughter of the late Willie and Viola Brown Booker, she worked for Tyson Foods and was a member of the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church in Malden.

Survivors include five sons, Robert Ivy, Melvin Townes and wife, Dora and Johnny Townes and wife, Mary, all of San Antonio, Texas; Cal Ivy, of Malden and Michael Ivy, of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Ida Evans and husband, Richard, of Los Angeles, Calif. and Ruby Wilson, of San Antonio; her step-mother, Esther Brooks, of Broseley, Mo.; two brothers, Lonnie Booker and wife, Bonnie and Willie Booker, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; one sister, Carrie Brooks, of Malden and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden with the Revs. Otis L. Hawes, Jr. and Margaret Williamson officiating.

Iva Browning

Iva Carolina Browning, 85, of Kennett, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Born Nov. 27, 1917, in Portageville, Mo., daughter of the late George W. and Mary Katherine Biffle Surlet, she was a member of the Ely Baptist Church in Kennett.

She married Delorin Browning, who preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 1982. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Bert and Earl Surlet.

Survivors include one son, Charles Boone, of Paragould, Ark.; three daughters, Pat Bowles, of Kennett, Jean Harris, of White Ga. and Joyce Bolyen, of Corpus Christi, Texas; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Kennett with the Rev. Don Slatton officiating.

Burial was in the Old Bethel cemetery at Paragould.

Pallbearers were Reggie Autry, Sidney, Marty, Ricky and Robbie McClung and Reggie Autry.

Wendell Dunning

Wendell Brent Dunning, 48, Hollandale, Miss., formerly of the Buckeye community near Leachville, Ark., died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Murphy, Miss.

Born in Leachville, son of the late Jack and Betty Buck Dunning, he was employed at Delta Pride Catfish and was a member of the New Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Susie Dunning, of Hollandale; one son, Dustin Brent Dunning, of Hollandale; one daughter, Brittany Dunning, of Hollandale; two nieces, Tonya Atchison, of Rives, Mo. and Mitzi Medsker, of Hornersville; one great-nephew, Jared Shaneyfelt, of Rives and two great-nieces, Lindsey Atchison, of Rives and Jacklynn Medsker, of Paragould, Ark.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Monda Johnson.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 at the Howard Funeral Home in Manila, Ark.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Howard Funeral Home Chapel in Manila with the Rev. David Powell officiating.

Burial will follow in Manila cemetery.

Jessie Fowler

Jessie Fowler, 68, of Jonesboro, Ark., formerly of Kennett, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at St. Bernard Hospital in Jonesboro.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow at the Oak Ridge cemetery in Kennett.

Pauline Jones

Pauline Jones, 89, of Kennett, died today, Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the Heritage Nursing Center in Kennett.

Visitation will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 4, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ed Jansson officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oak Ridge cemetery in Kennett.

Ruby McMunn

Ruby McMunn, 83, of Dexter, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Born Sept. 14, 1919, in Byrdstown, Tenn., daughter of the late Henry Martin and Sarah Elizabeth Knight Halbert, she was the owner and operator of McMunn Auto Parts an a member of the Dexter Church of Christ. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and former member of the Rebeckah Lodge.

On Dec. 13, 1941, in Malden, Mo., she married Leslie McMunn, who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1995.

Survivors include one son, Mike McMunn and wife, Connie, of Dexter; three grandchildren, Shannon Lemon and Cory McMunn, both of Dexter and Sarah McMunn, of Bloomfield, Mo. and two step-grandchildren, Patrick Hobbs, of Dexter and Kellie Affolder, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 3, at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dale Grissom officiating.

Burial will follow at the Smith-Stevenson cemetery near Dexter.

James Roberts

James Roberts, 73, of Clarkton, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete with the Bradshaw Funeral Home of Malden, Mo.
