Marie Karnes

Marie Karnes, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett.

Born Jan. 1, 1915, in Hornersville, Mo., a daughter of the late Claude and Janie Helton Stone, she was a 1933 graduate of Hornersville High School and retired cook from the Senath-Hornersville school.

On June 7, 1942, she married Leslie Karnes who preceded her in death June 16, 1987.

Survivors include five children, Jacqueline Davis of Foley, Mo., Nelda Morgan of Kennett, Omar and Roger Karnes of Senath and David Karnes of Benton, Ark.; two brothers, Jack and Bill Stone of Senath; two sisters, Frances Gist of Hornersville and Sue Hubel of Michigan; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the McDaniel Funeral Service Chapel in Senath with John M. Karnes and the Rev. Dale Rickman officiating.

Burial was in the Lulu cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jimmy McClain, Kevin Davis, Tommy Karnes, John Anderson, Dickie Don Karnes, Bud Gist and David Gist.

Arwilla Dodd

Arwilla Dodd, 91, of Dexter, Mo., formerly of Malden, Mo., died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Cypress Point Healthcare in Dexter.

Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Campbell, Mo., daughter of the late James Randle and Lula Bell McElyea Lacy, she was a homemaker, a clerk for Luttrell's IGA formerly located in Malden and a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Malden.

On Dec. 8, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., she married James Orville Dodd, who preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1954. She was also preceded in death by one son, James Lacy Dodd and one sister.

Survivors include one sister, Eleanor Underwood, of Piggott, Ark.; one grandson, James Michael Dodd, of Columbia, Mo. amd several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Dexter cemetery with Dr. Bill Jackson officiating.

Glenda Duffel

Glenda Alice Duffel, 62, of Leachville, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Blytheville, Ark.

Born in Dunklin County, daughter of Dorothy Birmingham Pemberton, of Clarkton, Mo. and the late Leamon Pemberton, she was a homemaker and a member of the Greater Life United Pentecostal Church in Arbyrd, Mo.

Survivors include her husband, Junior Duffel, of Leachville; one daughter, Vickie Farrar and husband, Dennis, of Senath, Mo.; one brother, Harvey Pemberton, of Clarkton; one sister, Helen Jackson, of Clarkton; three grandsons, Barry, Bruce and Bryan and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Greater Life United Pentecostal Church in Arbyrd with the Revs. Vernon Purser and Tony Rhynes officiating.

Burial was in the Leachville cemetery.

Howard Funeral Service of Leachville was in charge of arrangements.

William Holligan

William C. "Bill" Holligan, 74, of Caruthersville, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Osceola, Ark.

Born Oct. 30, 1928, in Senath, Mo., son of the late Clarence and Gladys Holligan, he was a U.S.Army veteran, a store manager for Osco Drug Company and of the Methodist faith. He was Commander for the American Legion Post, No. 88 and a former member of the Caruthersville City Council.

On Jan. 6, 1979, in Caruthersville, he maried Ruby Nell Craig, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include four step-sons, Russell Craig, of Kankakee, Ill., Terry Craig, of Manteno, Ill., Gary Craig, of Marysville, Ohio and David Craig, of Cottonwood Point, Mo.; one sister, Mary Lou Rice, of Kennett; four brothers, Bobbie Holligan, of Arkansas, Jimmy Holligan, of Florida and Danny and Jerry Lee Holligan, both of Tennessee; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, with the Rev. Dr. Paul Currie officiating.

Burial was in the Maple cemetery at Caruthersville.

Pallbearers were Wm. C. Clayton, Buck Ferrell, Floyd Smith, Joe Parkinson, Jim Anderson and George Cook.

H.S. Smith Funeral Home of Caruthersville was in charge of arrangements.

Scotty Jones

Scotty Glenn Jones, 33, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Kennett, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Memphis.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel with Greg Pollock officiating.

Burial will follow at the McGrew cemetery in Senath, Mo.

Willis Miller

Willis E. Miller, 79, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., formerly of Hayti, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Poplar Bluff.

Born Aug. 13, 1923, in Hayti, son of the late Roy Garvin and Mary Creech Miller, he was a veteran of WWII, having served in both the Army in the European Theater and the Navy in the Pacific Theater and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hayti. He worked at the Hayti Compress, AO Smith Corporation in Atlanta, Ga. and at his retirement worked for the Zayre Corporation in Atlanta.

In 1965, he married Juanita McGuire, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Miller.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty Morse, of Jefferson City, Mo., Barbara Felts, of Poplar Bluff and Kathy Sanders of Hayti; one adopted daughter, Donnie Pickens, of Braggadocio, Mo.; four step-sons, Rick McGuire, of Olive Branch, Miss., Gary McGuire, of Bentonville, Ark., Johnny McGuire, of Dowden, Ga. and Morris McGuire, of Timberlake, N.C.; one brother, Bobby Miller, of Bella Vista, Ark.; five grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Hayti with the Rev. Jack Allen officiating.

Burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery at Kennett.

Pallbearers were Todd Morse, Kenny Felts, Curt Sanders III, Mike Thomas, Larry Hampton and Jimmy Barron.

John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Neely

Mabel Kathryn "Kat" Neely, 89, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Caruthersville, Mo., died Tuesday, Jan.. 28, 2003, at Springfield.

Born April 5, 1913, in Pemiscot County, Mo., daughter of the late Ross and Roselle Lumpkins Adkins, she was an employee of Brown Shoe Company and a member of the Central Church of Christ.

She married Ira Neely, who preceded her in death in 1977. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Clell Adkins; one sister, Muriel Chilton and one great-nephew, Mark Johnecheck.

Survivors include two nieces, Jonnie Cross and husband, Don, of Springfield, Mo. and Demetra Franklin, of Potosi, Mo.; two great-nephews, Scott Cross, of Nixa, Mo. and Paul Johnacheck, of Springfield and one great-niece, Jo Michele Walker, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 31, at the Central Church of Christ in Caruthersville with Jimmy Colvett officiating.

Burial was in the Little Prairie cemetery at Caruthersville.

Pallbearers were Bill Broderick, Ralph Carleton, Horace Hughes, Paul Johnson, Denver R. Meek and Utry H. Triplett.

John W. German Funeral Home of Hayti was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Paul

Raymond L. Paul, 86, of Malden, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter, Mo.

Born July 15, 1916, son of the late Luther and Nora Umphrey Paul, he was a carpenter.

He married Ethel Carrie Latham, who preceded him in death on Jan. 8, 1990. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Lee Baggett, of Campbell, Mo.; one step-daughter, Benita Elder, of Flint, Mich.; two sons, Raymond M. Paul, of Malden and Bruce Anthony Paul, of Gonzales, Calif.; one step-son, Robert Pulley, of Malden; two brothers; four sisters; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden with the Rev. Roger Fowler officiating.

Burial was in the Memorial Park cemetery at Malden.

Lorane Smith

Lorane Della Smith, 76, of Malden, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Ridgeview Nursing Center in Malden.

Born March 26, 1926, in Tennessee, daughter of the late Albert and Jewell Counce, she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

She married Wiley Davidson, who preceded her in death. On March 2, 1998, in Piggott, Ark., she married Lyman Leroy Smith, who preceded her in death on June 3, 2001. She was also preceded in death by one son, James Davidson and three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lou Sluder, of Malden and JoAnn Weaver, of Prescott, Ark.; three sons, William Davidson, of Malden, Johnny Davidson, of Texas and Bobby Joe Davidson, of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Landess Funeral Home Chapel in Malden.

Burial was in the Bethany cemetery at Campbell, Mo.

George Swift

George Eugene "Jake" Swift, 88, of Hayward, Mo., died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at the Portageville Nursing Center in Potageville, Mo.

Born Nov. 26,1914, in Portageville, he was the son of the late George Eugene "Jake" and Nora Magers Swift.

On Jan. 25, 1935, in Hayti, Mo., he married Mary Mildred "Babb" Swift, who survives of the home.

Survivors also include three sons, Gilbert Swift, of Hayward, George E. Swift, of Jacksonville, Fla. and James "Jim" E. Swift, of Portageville; one daughter, Marilyn Jo Swift Nabors, of Smithsville, Miss.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by twins in infancy.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb 4, at the DeLisle Funeral Home in Portageville,

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the DeLisle Funeral Home Chapel in Portageville with Mark Inman officiating.

Burial will follow at the Portageville cemetery.
