Dorothy L. Thorne, 85, of Jackson, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home. She was born December 21, 1919, in Lilburn, Mo., daughter of Charles “Charlie” and Allie Evans. She and Orval C. Thorne were married September 19, 1936. He died February 8, 1986. Formerly of Patton, Thorne moved to Jackson in the early 1980’s, and had resided at the Jackson Manor the past eight years. Loving survivors include a son, Jerry Thorne of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Geneva and Rev. Lee Hammel of Monroe, NC.; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Orval R. Thorne, and two brothers. A graveside funeral service will be held Friday February 4th, at 1 PM, at the Essex Cemetery in Essex, Mo. Rev. Lee Hammel will officiate. Charles F. Schrader, age 84, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born November 6, 1920, in Cape Girardeau, son of Frederick W. and Anna E. Brandes Schrader. He and Mary I. Brazeal were married August 8, 1942. She passed away January 27, 2003. Charles was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. He served in the United States Army, in the 129th Armored Infantry Division, from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, France, receiving the Jubilee of Liberty Award, and a Purple Heart. Charles worked as Sales Manager for Moon Distributing Company, retiring in 1982 after 37 years of employment. Loving survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe Bob and Betty Schrader of St. Louis, MO; three daughters and a son-in-law, Judy Lueders and Jayne Schrader, both of Cape Girardeau, and Carol and Steve Emery of Smithfield, VA; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded by two brothers, a sister, and an infant grandson. Lorene “Pete” Becker, age 83, of Fruitland, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at her home. She was born November 8, 1921, in Crystal City, MO, daughter of John and Marie Peerman Harmon. She and Archie Edward Becker were married July 15, 1943, in Hillsboro, MO. He died March 15, 1979. Lorene was Baptized and Confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Festus, MO. She worked for Pittsburg Glass for a number of years in Festus. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Jackson since her family moved from Pevely, MO in 1961. Loving survivors include; three sons, Jim, and Dan Becker of Jackson, and Victor “Rick” Becker of Marble Hill, MO; two sisters, Rhoda Olegar of Wentzville, MO, and Cora Revelle of Pevely. Melvin E. Detjen, age 79, of Friedheim, MO, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2004, at his home. He was born April 24, 1925, in Cape Girardeau County, son of Edward and Ida Roth Detjen. He and Constance Irene Sauer were married April 20, 1947 in Jackson. She survives. During World War II, Melvin served and was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He was a self-employed farmer in the Friedheim community, was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedheim, and was a member of the American Legion Post of Perryville, MO. JUNE JAMES, 82, of Jackson, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2005, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, Ill.. She was born July 16, 1922, in Chickasha, Okla. daughter of Fred and Iva Mercer Baugher. She and Cecil W. James were married June 27, 1943, in Sikeston, Mo. During WWII, Velma trained in St. Louis to be a machinist. She then worked as a machinist at Hahs Machine Shop in Sikeston. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Sikeston, and taught Sunday School many years in the Youth Department. She also was a former Brownie Troop leader in Sikeston. In 1967, the family moved from Sikeston to their farm near Millersville. In 1998, they moved to Jackson. Loving survivors include her husband of Jackson; a son, Bill James of Nashville, Tenn.; three daughters, Patsy Parmeter, Barbara Schilling, Glenda Cobb, all of Jackson; three brothers, Larry Baugher of Ojai, Cal., Jerry Baugher of Monet, Mo., Fred Baugher of Thousand Oaks, Cal.; two sisters, Lorene Cook of Monet, Betty Wesson of Metropolis, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Carlton “Cotton” G. Meyer, 86, of Jackson, passed away Friday, January 28, 2005, at the Monticello House in Jackson. He was born October 28, 1918, in Cape Girardeau County, son of Charles W. and Erna Lowes Meyer. He and Clemency Horn were married April 22, 1944. Cotton was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942, and served in European and Middle East Theatres. A Radio Operator and Air Gunner, Cotton flew 50 missions on the “Screaming Eagle” before returning to the states. His most distinguished decorations are the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters, bronze stars for the battle campaigns, and a unit citation. Upon his honorable discharge in August, 1945, Cotton was First Sergeant of Company A. He was instrumental in establishing the National Guard unit in Jackson where he served as Second and First Lieutenant for a total of 31 years with the guard and 35 years of service to his country. In conjunction with his military service, he was an active member and Past Commander of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson, a member of the Honor Guard and Past Commanders’ Club, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau. Cotton owned and operated Jackson Frozen Food Locker for 35 years. He served three terms as Alderman from Ward 2 during the 1950s, and again from 1971 – 1973. In 1973, he was elected Mayor of Jackson and served 22 years. During his tenure, the city recognized expansion of the power plant, improvements in the waste water disposal plant, erection of traffic signals at the 61, 25, 72-34 junction, expansion of the city park, construction of the swimming pool, tennis courts, and band shell, and acquisition of the land and facilities for the Jackson Family Clinic and Jackson Manor Nursing Home. Cotton’s sincere interest in the advancement of local and world communities led him to become active in numerous civic organizations. Some affiliations include Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Jackson Retail Merchants, Southeast Missouri Hospital Association, Missouri Association of Meat Processors, Missouri Association of Municipal Utilities, Jackson Senior Center, Cape County Transit, Jackson Heritage Association, Jackson Boys Baseball League, Jackson Benchwarmers Club, and scouting. His membership in the Jackson Rotary Club spanned 56 years. He especially enjoyed the club fellowship and was always interested in Rotary International’s organized efforts to help the less fortunate around the world. In addition to holding each club office, he was a Paul Harris Fellow, a District Governor’s Aid from 1982-1983, and District Governor from 1983 – 1984. Also in 1983, the Jackson Chamber of Commerce honored him with the R..A. Fulenwider Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service. Cotton served St. Paul Lutheran Church in the capacity of President, Vice President, Elder, Sunday School teacher, Men’s Club Chairman, and District President of the Walther League. Loving survivors include his wife, Clemency, of Jackson; two sons, Charles and Craig Meyer of Jackson; a daughter, Carla Moore of Alcoa, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Carmen Simpher and husband Brad of Jackson, Michelle Clayton and husband Kevin of Louisville, Tenn., Chad Meyer of St. Louis, Jayson Moore of Knoxville, Tenn., Adam Meyer of New Wells, Cody Meyer of Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Cassie and Brandon Simpher, Ella Clayton; a sister, Dorothy Ficken of St. Louis; a brother, Harold Meyer of Springville, Tenn.; and a step-sister, Mary Crites of Jackson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson “Butch” Meyer; and three sisters, Altha Smith, Betty Hessenflow, and LaVern Bangert. H. Vernon Davault, age 77, of Jackson, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2005, at the family home. He was born May 22, 1927, in Bollinger County, MO, son of Ora and Ruth Snider Davault. He and Genevieve “Genny” Schreiner were married August 9, 1947, in Jackson. She survives. On May 10, 1945, he was inducted into the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged on July 30, 1946 as Seaman, First Class. Vernon had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Jackson since 1941. He was active in Sunday School, he was head usher of the 8:00 AM service, a former youth group van driver, and former R. A. leader. He was a long-time member of the Tuesday Night Church Bowling League at Jackson Lanes. In 1976, he and his family moved from Jackson to their farm, where he was an avid farmer and cattleman. He was a member of the American Legion Post #158 in Jackson. Nora A. Lungwitz, 88, of Altenburg, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was born June 14, 1916, in New Wells, daughter of Adolph R. and Christiana L. Jahn Thauwald. She and Edgar W. Lungwitz were married November 13, 1938, in New Wells. He died October 7, 1972. Lungwitz was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells. She farmed many years with her husband and also maintained the farm after his death. Loving survivors include a son, Eugene Lungwitz of Oak Ridge; two daughters, Dorothy Aurich of Perryville, Pauline Lungwitz of Altenburg; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was born March 19, 1921, in Pocahontas, MO, son of Martin and Matilda Bellman Kieninger. He and Verna Kester were married May 5, 1951, in Friedheim, MO. Kieninger was a life-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, where he was involved in various committees and offices. He had served several years on the Pocahontas Town Board. He retired from Landgraf Construction after many years of work. Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Steve Sandau of Salem, OR, Pat and Dirk Engelhart of Jackson, and Linda and Bill Wooten of Jackson; one brother, Clarence Kieninger of Jackson; two sisters, Lavera Barlow, and Elvera Cutter, both of Hillsboro, IN; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded by an infant daughter; a son; two brothers; and three sisters. He and Anna Helen Grebe were married November 16, 1942. Rudy worked for the Cape County Highway Department for many years, retiring in 1977. He moved to Jackson from Oak Ridge in 1980. Patricia “Pat” L. Fritsche, 55, of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at her home. She was born April 15, 1949, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Ellis and Olga Lohmann Kuntze. Pat was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg and Salem Lutheran Church in Farrar. She worked many years at Frontier Kitchen in Fruitland, retiring in May 2004 due to health complications. Pat was especially proud of her family. She received great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and always maintained a special interest in their activities. Russell H. Polen, age 91, of Jackson, died Thursday, January 13, 2005, at the home of his son. He was born May 27, 1913, in Fisk, MO, son of Oscar W. and Ethel Lou Appel Polen. He and Esther Long were married October 6, 1934, in Essex, MO. Polen sold seed corn for the Funk Seed Company for many years in Farmington, IL. In 1944, he moved to Millersville, where he farmed. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Millersville for many years. He and Esther celebrated 70 years of marriage in October, 2004. Loving survivors include his wife, Esther, of Jackson; three sons, Richard Polen of Godfrey, IL, Russell W. Polen of Jackson, Jeffrey Polen of Perryville, MO; one daughter, Betty Smith of Millersville; five brothers, Estel Polen of Maquon, IL, Donald Duley of Hanna City, IL, Earl Duley of Maquon, IL, and Carl Duley of Williams Field, IL., Ralph Duley of Yates City, IL, two sisters, Dorothy Schell of Peoria, IL, and Mary Ann Brown of Hanna City, IL; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Paul L. Johnson, 87, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born January 8, 1917, in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, son of the late Rev. Harry E. and Claudia L. Cooper Johnson. He and Bonnie “Janice” Townes were married in 1939. She passed away in 1981. He and Margaret Evans Estes were married February 16, 1982. She passed away Sept. 22, 2001. Paul served in the Army during World War II. He was a teletype operator in the Pacific Theatre. He was a resident of Cape Girardeau most of his life and was a member of Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church. He worked over 40 years for the Corps of Engineers and retired as a District Supervisor. Loving survivors include two grandsons, Dr. Paul H. Johnson of Knoxville, Tennessee, James G. Johnson of Evergreen, Colorado; a daughter-in-law, Martha Johnson Toll of Mountain View, Missouri; and a brother-in-law, Lee Townes of Cape Girardeau. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Lewis Johnson; and two sisters. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Vivian D. Patterson, age 78, of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. She was born August 6, 1926, in Long Beach, CA daughter of Jacob and Edith Goodman Scales. She was married to Earl Patterson.He preceded her in death. Mrs. Patterson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wilburton, Oklahoma and a former member of the Red Oak Eastern Star. Loving survivors include one son, Jack Ivie of Tustin, CA; two daughters Mary Gunn of Cape Girardeau and Evelyn Ivie of Oceanside, CA; one sister, Rose Moysa of Mesa, AZ; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Alvin E. Hennecke, 85, of Jackson, died Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home. He was born July 22, 1919, in Gordonville, son of William H. and Annie Amelunke Hennecke. He and Esther E. Best were married November 22, 1942. Alvin attended the former Needmore School south of Gordonville. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville. He had been a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson for 46 years. Alvin farmed west of Jackson most of his life, while also working at the former International Shoe and Handle factories in Jackson. In 1969, the family moved to Jackson. From 1972 – 1984, he worked for the Jackson R-2 School District. Loving survivors include his wife Esther of 62 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Janis Hennecke of Chaffee, Mo. two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Russell McCampbell of Columbia, Mo., and Brenda and John Smith of Festus, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Dennis Hennecke of Oak Ridge, Mo., Larry Hennecke of Jackson, Emily Smith of Festus, Marty, Von, and Eric Priggel of Oran, Mo.; Jennifer Shively of Benton, Mo.; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Albert, and Walter Hennecke. Marvin H. Meyr, 83, of Gordonville, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2005, at his home. He was born December 22, 1921, in New Wells, Mo. son of Walter and Ida Leimbach Meyr. He and Allene B. Grossheider were married April 12, 1953. She passed away May 24, 2004. Marvin owned and operated a dairy farm 36 years in Gordonville, retiring in 1988. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells. He later became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville, where he was as an elder and served 13 years on the Church Council. Loving survivors include a son, Donny Meyr, and two daughters Nancy Meyr, and Carolyn Meyr, all of Gordonville; a sister, Olga C. Meyr of Cape Girardeau; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Grossheider of Gordonville. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Meyr, September 10, 1979. She and Wilbert Best were married October 2, 1940. Best worked as a cook for the Jackson R-2 School District, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson, where she was active in the Lydia Kies Circle, Quilting Group, and Bible Study. Loving survivors include her husband; two daughters, Wilma Edmonds of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Norma Thieret of Ste. John was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville. He was a locomotive engineer for BN Railroad, retiring in 1989. Ed H. Hanschen, 89, of Gordonville, passed away Monday, January 3, 2005, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born September 6, 1915, in Gordonville, son of Martin P. and Clara Eggers Hanschen. He and Evelyn Hitt were married July 2, 1938, in Gordonville. She passed away August 10, 1995. Ed worked over 50 years at the former International Shoe Factory in Jackson. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Gordonville, where he was active in many church functions and formerly served as an elder. He especially enjoyed bowling in the church league and fishing. Loving survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Judy Hanschen of Cape Girardeau; a grandson, Geoffery Hanschen of Cape Girardeau; a granddaughter, Jillian Hanschen of Cape Girardeau; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sarah and Ben Borchelt of Cape Girardeau; Minnie Whitler of Gordonville; Maggie and John Williams of Gordonville. Gilbert “Gib” A. Meyr, 88, of New Wells, Mo., passed away Thursday, December 30, 2004, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born November 18, 1916, in New Wells, son of Gustav and Pauline Perr Meyr. He and Florence Hutteger were married April 28, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells. Loving survivors include his wife Florence of 64 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Delvin and Dorothy Meyr of Cape Girardeau, Ray and Julie Meyr of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Mike Longman of Jackson; nine grandchildren, Darrin Meyr and wife Stacy of Jackson, Daniel Meyr and wife Tina of St. Louis, DeAnn Hein and husband Gregg of Billings, Mont., Dwight Meyr and wife Diane of St. Louis, David Meyr and wife Trina of Meridian Miss., Sherri Palmer of Perryville, Mo, Brad Meyr and wife Paula of Jackson, Tony Longman of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Kala Longman of Jackson; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was born August 9, 1928, in Chaffee, MO, daughter of George and Emma Laurentius Beel. She and Elmer W. Fluegge were married February 28, 1948. He passed away December 6, 1986. Ruth was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Herculaneum, MO, and had been active in the VFW Post Auxiliary in Festus, MO. Survivors include; two brothers, Ed Beel of Cape Girardeau, and Charlie Beel of St. Louis, MO; three sisters, Sophie Schafer of Jackson, Caroline Macke of St. Louis, and Lavern Winebarger of Fredericktown; four grandsons, and three great-grandchildren. Charles “Junior” Sides

Charles “Junior” Sides, age 78, of Leemon, died Friday, December 24, 2004, at the Missouri Veterans’ Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born May 28, 1926, near Leemon, son of Charles F. and Dora Trickey Sides. He and Eva “Louise” Stanley were married August 31, 1943 at Benton, MO. She died May 25, 1988. On January 1945 he was inducted into the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on August 1946. While in the Army he received the Victory Medal, two overseas Service Bars, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Army of Occupation of Japan, and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Sides worked as a carpenter, river man, head miller at the former Leemon Saw Mill, and also worked for the former Litz Poultry Plant in Jackson. Mr. Sides was engaged in farming all of his life near the Leemon community, until his retirement in 1990. Survivors include six sons Gary, Lynn, Stephen, Terry, and Marcus all of Jackson and David of Burleson, TX; four daughters, Donna Aufdenberg of Burfordville, Geta Parker and Gaye Smith of Jackson, and Nina Dickerson of Millersville; 15 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, two sisters, and three grandchildren. Charles Willis Peters

Charles Willis Peters, 68, of Burfordville, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2004, at his home. He was born June 25, 1936, in Burfordville, son of Willie and Lena Runnels Peters. He and Doris Reitzel were married June 8, 1958, in Burfordville. Charles attended the former Burdfordville Elementary School; was a 1955 graduate of Jackson High School; and a 1957 graduate of the former Cape Business College. He enjoyed farming and did so his entire life while also working as a bookkeeper for Farm Bureau in Advance; a school bus driver for Jackson R-2 Schools; a representative for Walters Buildings, McCombs Funeral Home, and the Southeast Missourian’s Target publication, retiring in 2001. The Peters had been members of First General Baptist Church in Jackson since 1986. Charles was a deacon, a former member of the Building Committee and a former church board member. He was also a former member of the Gideons International. He was a current member of the Camp Allen board, and the Columbia Mutual Insurance Board. Loving survivors include his beloved wife, Doris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Glenn Woeltje and their children Wyatt and Rachel of Jackson, Tennessee, Stephanie and Kevin Rhodes and their son, Braden, of Burfordville; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Marcella Peters of Marble Hill, Mo.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Barbara Reitzel of Whitewater; three nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Phyllis Dockins Lewis, 98, of Jackson, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2004, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. She was born February 1, 1906, in Sparta, Ill., the daughter of Harvey and Margariete Cox McManus. She and C. P. “Pal” Dockins were married March 19, 1923. Pal passed away December 2, 1961. Phyllis and Pal owned and operated the former Dockins Grocery & Produce Store in Burfordville many years, where both served as Post Masters. Phyllis was a charter member and past president of the former Burfordville Homemakers Club. She was active in the Burfordville Baptist Church and was a former Sunday School Teacher in the youth and adult departments. On January 29, 1972, Phyllis married Richard Lewis. She retired as Post Master on September 28, 1973, and then sold the store. In 1976, she and Richard moved to Jackson and were members of the First Baptist Church, where Phyllis was one of the oldest members. They remained active until January 2002, when Richard suffered broken bones from a fall and moved to the Lutheran Home. Phyllis followed and resided in an assisted living apartment. Richard passed away July 15, 2004, and in November, 2004, Phyllis became quite frail and moved from her assisted living apartment to the skilled facility at the Lutheran Home. Loving survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Donna Dockins of Jackson; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Woodrow Colyer of Jackson; three stepsons and their wives, Dr. Robert “Bob” and Jean Lewis of Keyport, Washington, Dick and Kay Lewis of Pearl River, New York, Don and Becky Lewis of Brazeau, Mo; and stepdaughter, Mary Ann Haynes of Cape Girardeau. Also surviving are five grandchildren and their spouses, Brennan and Martha Colyer of Farmington, New Mexico, Greg Colyer, Scott and Donna Colyer of Jackson, Christi and Rick Guilliams, Jamey and Dee Dee Dockins, all of Jackson; eight great-grandchildren, Lynda McLaughlin and husband Kyle, Ellyn Colyer, all of Farmington, New Mexico, Philip, Chelsie, Rachel, and Melissa Colyer, Rebecca Guilliams, Madalyn Dockins, all of Jackson; a great-great-granddaughter, Layne McLaughlin of Farmington, New Mexico; 10 step-grandchildren, and 15 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Frenton, Ralph, and Floyd McManus two sisters, Nola Nothdurft and Della McDonald; and a great-granddaughter, Callie Dockins.
