Marble Hill: Etta Mae McMullen, age 92, of Marble Hill, passed away Wednesday, March 28th, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Friends may call Thursday, March 29th, between 4:00 – 8:00 P.M., at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral Service will be Friday, March 30th, at 2:00 P.M., at the funeral home, followed by interment in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. Rev. Daniel Hale will officiate. Mrs. McMullen was born November 24, 1908, in Marble Hill, daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Bell Stevens Barks. She and W. H. “Mac” McMullen were married May 24, 1958. Mr. McMullen survives. Other survivors include a brother, Wendell Barks of Jackson; sister, Ola Schreiner of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by four brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. McMullen worked 20 years at the former Brown Shoe Co. and Valley Shoe Co. in St. Louis. She was a member of Millersville Baptist Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Millersville Baptist Church or the Arthritis Foundation.

Jackson: Loren W. Abbott, age 85, passed away Friday, March 30, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Friends may call Sunday, April 1st, between 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral Service will be Monday, April 2nd, at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson with a Military Honor Guard Service. Rev. David Johnson will officiate. Mr. Abbott was born March 16, 1916 in Cape Girardeau County, son of Charles W. and Sally E. Phelps Abbott. On July 9, 1938 he married Ruby Mangels in Poplar Bluff, MO. She died January 8, 1994. Mr. Abbott is survived by one brother, Lloyd Abbott, of Marble Hill: and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers.
Mr. Abbott served in the United States Army and was a WWII Veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post #158 in Jackson and the VFW. He had worked at the former Jackson Hosiery Mill and retired in 1983 from Ceramo Company in Jackson. He was also a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson. Jackson: Geneva E. King, age 81, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. The Revs. Robert Cheney, Ann Mowery and Raymond Epps will officiate. Mrs. King was born February 2, 1920, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of the late Jesse and Zora Hodge Morton. She and Robert P. “Bob” King were married October 22, 1936 and were looking forward to their 65th wedding anniversary this year. Mr. King survives. Other loving survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Earlene King, Gene and Joyce King, Kenny and Jackie King, Ricky and Lynda King, all of Jackson; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Homer “Bub” Stamp, Jr. of Scott City, and Sharon and Bob Joyce, Mary Beth and Paul Vrbosky, Cynthia and Ken Hotop, all of Jackson; brother, Jack Morton of Cape Girardeau; 14 grandchildren, Joey, Gregg, and Kristi King, Jayne Hartman, Gina Cato, Kendra King, Erika and Deidre King, Lisa Toll, Don Jacobs III, Andrea and Amy Vrbosky, Jennifer and Sarah Hotop; and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded by two brothers, three sisters, and a granddaughter, Holly Christine Jacobs. In 1952, Bob and Geneva opened Bob’s Tire Repair in Jackson, where Geneva did the bookkeeping and accounting. The King’s station was part of the “Flying A” franchise, and they were the first retailers to offer Pennzoil products. The King’s were known locally for their musical ability. With Geneva at the keyboard and Bob on his fiddle, they played at church and civic functions and Jackson Homecomers. Geneva was a member of Shawnee Hills Baptist Church in Jackson. Amanda C. "Babe" Short

Jackson: Amanda “Babe” C. Short, age 97, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 31st, at 1:30 P.M., at the funeral home, followed by interment in Russell Heights Cemetery. Rev. David Johnson will officiate. Mrs. Short was born May 14, 1903, in Jackson, daughter of William and Rosia Siemers Illers. She and William “Harlan” Short were married September 2, 1927. He passed away June 27, 1965. Loving survivors include four nieces, Helen Steck Williams of Austin, Texas, Kathryn Steck McLeod of El Paso, Texas, Shirley Illers Cooper of Marble Hill, Dottie Illers Ellis of Jackson; a nephew, John Short of Jackson; seven great nephews; and two great nieces. She was preceded by two brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Short attended the Lutheran grade school, graduated from Jackson High School, and then attended Southeast Missouri Teachers College. She taught sixth grade in the Jackson School System. In the late thirties, she and her husband formed Mississippi Valley Printing Company in Cape Girardeau. Mrs. Short was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson. She was instrumental in organizing its Junior Walther League, Concordia Guild, and Sunday School. Mrs. Short organized the first area cancer drive and served as its first chairman. She was a 65 year member of the Thursday Literary Club and held many offices. She was a member of DJ Chapter P.E.O. in Jackson. She served 12 years on Jackson Public Library Board and was on the board when the library and the City combined to build city hall. She was recipient of the Jackson “Heritage Award” in 1998. Mrs. Kimes was born November 1, 1928, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, daughter of the late Walter V. and Vera Pride Smith. Loving survivors include a son, David Kimes of Cape; two daughters, Linda Mangels of Cape, and Penny DelVecchio of St. Louis; brother, Luther Smith of Dallas, Texas; sister, Sue McGowen of Mascoutah, Illinois; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Mrs. Davenport was born September 15, 1925, in Troy, Missouri, daughter of the late Jesse and Addie Hasselfeld Dunard. She and Charles Davenport were married August 8, 1944. He passed away February 1, 1985. Loving survivors include a son, Michael Davenport of Jackson; two daughters, Sharlie Sarakas and Kathy Davenport, both of Jackson; two brothers, John Kenneth Dunard of St. Peters, and Donald Dunard of Troy; and one sister, Dorothy Chapman of Rush, Kentucky. Mrs. Davenport was a cook at Riverview High School in St. Louis 20 years. She moved from St. Louis to Jackson in 1980. JACKSON: Milton Nitsch, age 78, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Friends may call Friday, March 23rd, between 4:00 – 8:00 P.M., at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. An American Legion Service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Service will be Saturday, March 24th, at 10:30 A.M., at the funeral home. Interment will be at Russell Heights Cemetery, with a Missouri Honor Guard Graveside Service. Rev. John Rice will officiate. Mr. Nitsch was born October 25, 1922, in Cape Girardeau, son of the late Leo and Zola Masterson Nitsch. He and Verna Lee Gartung were married April 30, 1950, at Zion Methodist Church in Gordonville. Mrs. Nitsch survives. Other loving survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy A. and Keith Raganyi, Lynette and Jay Moore, and Rhonda and Brandon Norman all of Jackson; sister, Doris Stout of Jefferson City; two grandchildren, Landry James Moore and Randa Lee Norman; and two step grandchildren, Jacob and Faith Raganyi. He was preceded by a daughter, Debbie, in 1965; a brother, and a sister.
Mr. Nitsch was a 1940 graduate of Jackson High School. He was a lifetime family farmer and also worked 25 years as a Field Agent for the ASCS Office. From 1985 – 1991, he was co-owner of Brennecke Chevrolet in Jackson and presently was serving as President of Brennecke Chevrolet Co., Inc and was a member of the MFA Oil Board. In December, 1943, Mr. Nitsch was inducted into the US Army and served in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. He was honorably discharged as a Tech Sargent in November, 1946. He was a 51-year member and Past Commander of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson. Mr. Nitsch strongly supported the American Legion Baseball Team, assisted with Bingo, and served many years as a representative to Jackson Homecomers. He was a charter member of the Honor Guard, and a former Commander of the 14th District. He was also a member of the VFW in Cape Girardeau. Mr. Nitsch actively served as a volunteer at the Missouri Veterans’ Home, and on April 6th was to receive “Volunteer of the Year” Recognition. He was a member of the SEMO Boosters Club. He had been a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson for many years. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Jackson High School Scholarship Fund, Jackson American Legion Baseball Team, or New McKendree United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Deneke was born March 5, 1917, in Tilsit, Missouri, daughter of the late William and Minnie Siebert Neumeyer. She and Roy Deneke were married April 19, 1939, in Gordonville. Mr. Deneke passed away December 10, 1999. She was also preceded by four brothers and five sisters. Loving survivors include two sons, Ronald W. and James E. Deneke, both of Gordonville; daughter, Kathryn Miller of Jackson; six grandchildren, Kim Scheffer, Tonya Wendel, Kirk Miller, Kristin Miller, Julie Deneke, and Jonathan Deneke, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Deneke was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church. She formerly served as president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service; formerly served as Primary Sunday School Superintendent; former Director of Vacation Bible School; and was church organist for many years. Howard Mueller will officiate. Mr. Pfeiffer was born June 24, 1920, in Pocahontas, Missouri, son of the late Alvin and Alvina Koenig Pfeiffer. He and Norma A. Hemmann were married October 14, 1944. She passed away December 4, 1999. He was also preceded by three brothers and a sister. Loving survivors include two sons, Thomas Pfeiffer of Westland, Michigan, and Wayne Pfeiffer of Jackson; daughter, Joan Humphries; two sisters, Gusta Boren of Cape, and Hattie Hahs; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Pfeiffer served in the US Army during WWII. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, where he was a former trustee, and formerly served on the Finance Committee. He farmed southeast of Pocahontas many years and co-owned and operated Pocahontas Meat Company. He was a member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 in Jackson and a lifetime member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape. Mr. Lowes was born March 7, 1928, in Jackson, son of the late Emil and Emma Voges Lowes. He and Mary Lou Surlet were married August 22, 1950, in Arkansas. Mrs. Lowes survives. Other loving survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David W. and Susan Lowes of Jackson; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Brenda and Eddie Ross of Jackson, Donna and Joe Young of Cape and Barbara McFall of West Chester, Oh.; sister, Lillian Reimann of Egypt Mills; three brothers, Norman Lowes of Dexter, Paul W. and Harold Lowes of Jackson; and eight grandchildren, Aaron and Adam Ross and Rachel and Samuel Lowes of Jackson, Cara Young of Cape, and Ashlyn, Justin and Austin McFall of West Chester, Oh. He was preceded by his parents, a sister, and an infant brother.
Mr. Lowes was a member of Hanover Lutheran Church. He served in the US Army from November 7, 1950 – August 1, 1956, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked 30 years for Missouri Utilities. She and Jerry Johnson were married June 6, 1981 and he survives. Other loving survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Teresa Cook of Cape, Jack Cook and fiancee, Pam Seal of Cape Girardeau and Linda Cook of Jackson; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Rodney Enderle of Jackson; two step-daughters, Donna Burk of Jackson and Denna Champ, and husband, Ray of St. Ann, Mo.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Joan Wright and Lester “Buddy” and Nancy Wright of Jackson; sister, Ruby Strong of Arnold; seven grandchildren, Justin Cook of Karnak, Il, Staci Cook of Cape, Danielle and Erika Cook, and Nichole Cook of Jackson and Derrick and Cody Bangert of Jackson; two step-grandchildren, Tyler and Tracy Burk of Jackson. Betty was a Jackson High School graduate. For 32 years, she worked as an Avon Representative and achieved membership in Avon’s Presidents’ Club and Honor Society. Loving survivors include two sons, John and Allen Stueve, both of Jackson; daughter, Diane Wendel of Jackson; two brothers, Cletus and Nugent Walker, both of St. Lou is; sister, Helen Sides of Independence, Mo.; and two grandchildren. Joe was born July 22, 1955, in Cape Girardeau, son of Charles and Joy Statler Engelhart. He and Jeanette Andersen were married April 28, 1979. Loving survivors include his wife and parents; a sister, Frances Engelhart of Cape Girardeau; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dirk and Patti Engelhart and Paul and Carol Engelhart, all of rural Jackson; two nephews, Tyler and Jeremy Engelhart; three nieces, Katelyn, Alexis, and Rachel Engelhart; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Joe was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pocahontas. He was a graduate of Jackson High School and worked as a carpenter. In 1978, he formed Engelhart Construction & Fireside Log Homes. He was presently working for the Oak Ridge School District. George Robert Neilson Jr.

JACKSON: George Robert Neilson Jr. age 79 of Jackson passed away Sunday, March 04, 2001 at home. He was born December 22, 1921 in St Louis, MO, son of George Robert and Mary Wilson Neilson Sr. He and Viola Call were married July 22, 1950 in Marble Hill, MO. She preceded him in death November 9, 2000. Neilson was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson where he formerly served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and on many other committees. Mr. and Mrs. Neilson lived in O’Fallon, Illinois after they were married and later moved to Urbana, IL where he attended the University of Illinois. They returned to Missouri where he managed the Jackson Farm Bureau. After moving to Centralia, Illinois, he worked for Rose Exterminating Company. Upon returning to Jackson, Mr. Neilson managed Feeders Warehouse. In 1966, he opened his own exterminating business in Jackson known as Neil’s Pest Control Service. He was a former member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Agriculture Committee for many years. Mr. Neilson was a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge #441 in Jackson where he was a past Worshipful Master and a 32nd degree mason. He was also a member of the High Twelve. Neilson was a member of Eastern Star #91 of Jackson and previously served as Worthy Patron. He was a member of American Legion Post #158 in Jackson. Mr Neilson served in the US Navy during WW II from 1940 to 1946. He actively took part in the “Battle of Midway” aboard the USS Yorktown Battleship. Survivors include 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Donna Neilson of San Antonio, TX, Doris Koeberl and husband Dennis of Jackson, brother, Carl Neilson of TX, two half-brothers, Allen Asselmeier of Albuquerque, NM and Francis Asselmeier of Columbia, IL, three half-sisters, Dorris Lincoln of Marble Hill, MO, Mary Schneider of Columbia, IL, Doris England of Detroit, MI, two granddaughters, Kristy Kennon and husband Michael of Ballwin, MO, Kara Koeberl of Jackson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fordyce Neilson of San Diego, CA.
Visitation will be 4-8 pm Tuesday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, with a Masonic service at 7 P.M. The funeral service will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral chapel with Rev Richard Northcutt officiating. Burial will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson with military honors. Memorial donations may be given to New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson or Southeast Hospice.

ORIOLE: Loran Donald Jones, age 73, passed away Friday, March 2, 2001, at his home in Oriole. Friends may call Sunday, March 4th, between 4:00 – 8:00 P.M., at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Parish Prayers will be said at 7:30. Funeral Service will be Monday, March 5th, at 10:00 A.M., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson, followed by interment in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with a Military Honors Service. Monsignor Edward Eftink will officiate. Mr. Jones was born May 1, 1927, in Dexter, son of the late Donald Loran and Jenny Rice Jones. He and Gladys Anne Clark were married May 1, 1976. Mrs. Jones survives. Other loving survivors include five sons, Morris “Mo” Dean Jones of Whitewater, Kenny Jones of Jackson, Gordy Jones of Fort Worth, Texas, Richard Jones and Steve Jones, both of Jackson; three step-sons, Virgil Clark of Lisbon, Iowa, Edwin Clark and Jeffery Clark; three step-daughters, Carolyn Wilter of Colorado, Delores Washburn of Hiawatha, Iowa, Denise Martin of Albernette, Iowa; a brother, Bill Jones of Hot Springs, Arkansas; three sisters, Nadene Roberts, Virginia Paisley, and Rosemary Lee Hahn, all of Cedar Rapids; 32 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son.
Mr. Jones served in the US Army from February 25, 1946 – April 4, 1947. He worked for Wilson Meat Packing House in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from 1953 – retirement in 1978; and moved to Oriole in 1979, where he and his wife owned and operated Happy Hollow Tavern until 1995. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson, and the VFW and American Legion in Cedar Rapids. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Southeast Hospice.

JACKSON: Jose Roman Perez, age 53, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson on Saturday, March 3rd, beginning at 10:00 A.M., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. Interment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape. Revs. Ron Watts and Richard Combs will officiate. Mr. Perez was born February 28, 1947 in Edinburg, Texas, son of Jose Cruz and San Juana Corona Perez. He and June A. Reid were married November 7, 1970. She survives. Other loving survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph Scott and Carinsa Perez of Jackson, John Raymond and Carrie Perez of O’Fallon, and Jason Andrew Perez of Jackson; one brother, Matt Perez of Alabama; five sisters, Terri Giardina of St. Louis, Connie Miller of Marshfield, Marie Cockrell and Maria Medlin, both of Dexter, and Sara Garcia of Edinburg, Texas; and one granddaughter, Salena Perez of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother, Frank Perez.
Mr. Perez was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Fruitland, MO. He had 30 years of dedicated service to General Electric Medical Systems. Perez served as an adult leader of Boy Scout Troop #311 and was currently active in the University Extension Programs. He was a member of the Cape Girardeau Road Runners Club and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War from 1967 through 1970. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Wesley United Methodist Church – Fruitland, Missouri.
