Dennie C. Hobson, 58, died May 28, 2002, at St. Louis, Mo., following a sudden illness. Mr. Hobson was born July 8, 1943, in Granby, Mo. He married Linda Drake Feb. 19, 1970, and she survives. He is also survived by his mother, Alice Hobson; four siblings, Barbara Kuropata of Houston, Texas, Ernest Hobson, Gary Hobson and Tamara Thurman, all of Granby; and several nieces and nephews. Dennie received a Bachelor of Sociology degree from SWMU. He worked for Joplin Regional Center and Family Services for 15 years. He was a professional musician for most of his life. He owned Hobson’s music in Neosho and taught music for the last 13 years. Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Granby Memorial Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Dawayne Lasiter, Jamie Otten, Pat Stewart, Jack Cooper, Harry Sprenkle and Bob Lanham. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home in Granby from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home.

Jim Winberry
Oct. 12, 1939 - May 29, 2002
James Martin “Jim” Winberry, 62, of Goodman, Mo., passed away at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at his residence after an illness. Mr. Winberry was born Oct. 12, 1939, in Malten, Mo., and had lived in the Goodman area for over 30 years. He was self-employed as a farmer and had worked for Moark Industries, Anderson, as a driver for two years. He was a United States Navy veteran. He married Eva A. Reina in Las Vegas, Nev., in 1960. She survives at the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Eva Freeborn of Joplin; a son, Wesley Winberry of Columbia; his mother, Dorothy Winberry of Neosho; three sisters, Zella Ashley and Mavis Underwood, both of Viola, Ark., and Betty Smith of Neosho; three brothers, David Winberry of Neosho, John Winberry and Wesley Winberry, both of California; his uncle, Martin Winberry of St. Louis; and six grandchildren, Natalia Ann Winberry, Aaron Alexander Winberry, Anna Renee Winberry, Ericka Nicole Freeborn, Stevan Reece Freeborn, and Lane Patrick Freeborn. Services were held Friday, May 31, 2002, at the Parker Mortuary Chapel. Wayne Burtcher officiated. Interment followed at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sally Ann Davidson

Sally Ann Tracy Davidson, 77, of Anderson, Mo., did at 11:45 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2002, at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. Mrs. Sally Davidson was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Anderson, Mo., to the late L.L. “Rip” Tracy and Bessie Marie Roark Tracy, She lived all of her life in Anderson. Sally was saved on Nov. 5, 1935, and was a member of the Anderson First Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member, G.A. leader, and with the Helping Hands. She was also a 53-year member of Chapter DL, P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a homemaker. Sally married Russell James Davidson July 28, 1945 in Pocomoke, Md. She was preceded in death by her husband Dec. 22, 2001, and by her parents and her only brother, L.L. “Bob” Tracy. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Linda and Steve Kisker of Lenexa, Kan., Dianne and J.B. Dill of Anderson, Mo., Suzanne and Dale Stuart of Rogers, Ark.; five grandsons, David Dorothy, Jason Dill and wife Jill, Brandon Dill and wife Amy, Craig Stuart, and Doug Dorothy and wife Emily; one granddaughter, Jill Stuart, and five great-grandchildren. The funeral service for Sally Davidson was held Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Anderson First Baptist Church in Anderson, Mo. Tom Ellis, minister officiated. Burial was in the Anderson Cemetery in Anderson, Mo. Grandsons David Dorothy, Jason Dill, Brandon Dill, Craig Stuart and Doug Dorothy served as pallbearers. Visitation was held May 27, 2002, at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Mo., where the family received friends. Memorial contributions may be given to the Anderson First Baptist Church Building Fund in care of the Ozark Funeral Home in memory of Sally Davidson.

Ira H. Spurlock

Mr. Ira H. Spurlock, 84, of Pineville, Mo., died at 4:48 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Gravette Medical Center in Gravette, Ark., after an illness. Mr. Spurlock was born Oct. 7, 1917, in Caverna, Mo., to the late Robert Henry and Alma May (Slinkard) Spurlock. He had lived in McDonald County all of his life. He served eight years as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy during World War II, when he was also involved in the Truculent Turtle Project. He was a member of the Pineville/Jane American Legion Post #392. he was a farmer and a member of the United Methodist Church in Pineville, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ralph Spurlock, and a grandson, Dylan Algood. He married Joy Ann Dotson Magee on Aug. 9, 1956, at Wheaton, Mo. She survives. Additional survivors include a son, Ira Scott Spurlock and wife, Gina of Mannford, Okla.; three daughters, Pam Davis of Anderson, Mo., Piper McKinney and husband Jim of Pineville, Mo., and Melanie Algood and husband Dewey of Jane, Mo.; a sister, Letha Head of Bentonville, Mo.; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral service for Ira H. Spurlock was held Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Pineville, Mo. Pastor Doris Schlessman officiated. Marylin L. Carman, 50, of Anderson, Mo., died at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Northwest Arkansas Medical Center in Springdale, Ark., following an illness of 18 months. Mrs. Carman was born Nov. 24, 1951, in Goodman, Mo., and was a lifelong area resident. She worked at the CobbVantress Forms in Noel, Mo. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and gardening and was a 19-year member of the Exciting Living Word Fellowship Church in Anderson. She is survived by six children, Amey Newell of Anderson, Candy Painter of Carthage, Matthew Carman of Anderson, Lacy Le of Anderson, Sarah Carman of Anderson and Jenniffer Painter of Anderson; her mother, Ethel Mae Duncan of Goodman, Mo.; one sister, Debbie Howard of Goodman; and three grandchildren, Samantha Newell, Ashton Le and Tori Le. Services will be held Saturday, May 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the Exciting Living Word Church in Anderson. Tim Crampton will officiate. Mary Lee Lloyd, 58, of Anderson, Mo., died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at 11:35 a.m. at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. Mrs. Mary Lloyd was born July 20, 1944, in De Ridder, La., to the late Oscar and Mandy Louise (Gill) Burks. She had lived in Anderson, Mo., since Nov. 1, 1994, coming from Joplin, Mo. She had visited the Patterson Heights Baptist Church west of Anderson, Mo. She had been a truck driver with Tri-State Transit of Joplin, Mo., for 11 years, retiring in June of 1995 due to health reasons. She married Gene E. Lloyd Feb. 16, 1962, in DeRidder, La. He survives of the home in Anderson, Mo. Additional survivors include two sons, Buddy Lloyd of Ashdown, Ark., Justin Lloyd of Anderson, Mo.; one daughter, Sobronia Conley of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Amber Lloyd, Cortni Lloyd, Tyler Lloyd, Brandi Lloyd, Cory Conley, Casey Conley, Zachary Lloyd; three step-grandchildren; three brothers, Willie Burks of Atkins, Ark., Dwight “Shrimp” Burks of DeRidder, La., Roland “PeeWee” Burks of Oakdale, Calif.; two sisters, Wanda Brown of DeRidder, La., Doshie Miller of Anderson, Mo. Pearl Wasson, 98, of Anderson, Mo., died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at 3:30 a.m. at Beverly Health and Rehab in Anderson, Mo., after an illness. Mrs. Wasson was born Dec. 29, 1903, in Goose Rock, Ken., to the late Joseph and Phoebie (Asher) Howard. She had lived in Anderson, Mo., since 1976, coming from Springfield, Mo. She was a homemaker and a seamstress. She had attended the United Methodist Church in Goodman, Mo. She married R.C. “Mike” Wasson April 4, 1925. He preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; four sisters; a daughter, Maxine Ables; and a daughter-in-law, Vera Wasson. Survivors include a son, Joe Wasson of Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Doris Beshears of Anderson, Mo., and Carol Smith of Neosho, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. Bertha Weeley Wolf, 80, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at her home. She was born April 12, 1922, in Cherokee County, Okla. Bertha was a homemaker all of her life, and lived in Pineville, Mo., until 1960 when she moved to Delaware County, Okla. She married Mike Wolf Aug. 23, 1944. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Wolf; one son, Beaver Wolf; two grandsons, Jon Wolf and Dylan Foreman; three granddaughters, Rebecca Lynn King, Bernice Wolf and Kimberly King; one brother; and three sisters. She is survived by 10 children, Betty Culver of Jay, Okla., Cyanthia Manley of Catoosa, Okla., Jan Wolf of Grove, Okla., Doris Teehee of Joplin, Mo., Archie Wolf of Lawton, Bob Wolf, Adam Wolf, Tom Wolf and Mitchell Wolf, all of Jay, Okla.; one stepson, Richard Panther Wolf of Pryor, Okla.; two sisters, Pauline Leach and Malinda Chucalate of Stilwell, Okla.; 42 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Jay. The interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Larry Leon Able, 35, of Purdy, Mo., passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at 5:30 p.m. five miles east of Powell as a result of an all-terrain vehicle accident. He was born Oct. 27, 1966, in Monett, Mo., the son of James Able and Bettie Ingle Warren. He worked at Bettie’s Rapid Stop in Fairview, Mo., and attended Pioneer Baptist Church. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Bettie and Pete Warren of Fairview, Mo.; one brother, Jimmy Able of Marionville, Mo.; one stepbrother, Leo Warren of Fairview, Mo.; three grandmothers, Ann Ingle, Zelma Able of Monett, Mo., and Ann Warren of Fairview, Mo.; six nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James Able, on June 10, 2001, and grandfathers, Leon Ingle and Jake Able. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Oct. 8, 2002, at Dice Cemetery near Fairview, Mo., with the Rev. Tony Wyatt officiating. Herbert Charles Graham
Nov. 19, 1932 - Oct. 4, 2002
Herbert Charles Graham, 69, of Pineville, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark., after a hard fought battle against multiple myeloma. He was born Nov. 19, 1932, in Bragg City, Mo., to Noah and Sadie Hartwell Graham. He moved to St. Louis when he was 10. He joined the United States Army in 1948. During his 20 years in the service, he served in the 3rd Infantry Division, 15th Infantry Regiment, Co. K; the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, Co. K; and the 82nd Airborne Division, Co. E, 505 Airborne Infantry Regiment, where not only did they jump out of the plane, they also manned the gliders. He fought in the Korean War and earned the Purple Heart from injuries he sustained in battle. He retired from the Army in 1968. He married Jane Herzog on June 25, 1966. They lived in Virginia until 1970, moved to St. Louis and in 1980 moved to Pineville, Mo., where he was a resident until his death. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jane Graham of Pineville, Mo.; one son, Charles Patrick Graham and wife, Blythe, of Wesley, Ark.; three daughters, Carmen Rice and husband, Michael, of Lexington, Ken., Tracey Milburn and husband, Lary, of Shelbyville, Ken., and Sharon Sherman and husband, Bryon, of Noel, Mo.; one sister, Hazel Heaton of St. Louis, Mo.; and 11 grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be sorely missed. “Honor to you old soldier!” No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory in Bella Vista, Ark.

Suzanne Lynn ‘Taylor’ Peak

Suzanne Lynn “Taylor” Peak, 71, of Anderson, Mo., died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at 1:20 a.m. at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. Mrs. Peak was born July 20, 1931, in Griffith, Ind., to the late Arthur and Berniece (Robinson) Taylor. She was married to Paul Peak on July 15, 1976. He survives of the home. She had been the administrator at Woodlawn Residential Care Facility in Anderson, Mo., since 1980. She was a member of the Nativity of our Lord Catholic Church in Noel, Mo. Survivors include her husband, Paul. Four sons, six daughters, one brother, and one sister, 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial wan held Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church. Father Joseph Leim, celebrant. Burial followed at the Anderson Cemetery in Anderson, Mo. Pallbearers were Kevin Peak, Keith Tisdale, Jason Minton, John Minton, Jeremy Norred, Scot Norred and Louie Casias, Jr. The visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. A rosary service was held following the visitation at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Mo. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the building fund for Nativity of our Lord Catholic Church, 227 Sulphur St., Noel, Mo., 64854.

James Price Langley

Mr. J.P. Langley, 81, of Anderson, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at 12:50 a.m. at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. Mr. J.P. Langley was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Southwest City, Mo., to the late Floyd A. and Leona (Denton) Langley. He was a farmer. He served with the 203rd in the Aleutian Islands and the Army Corp. of Engineers in Europe during World War II for 5-1/2 years. He was a past chairman of the Democrat party in McDonald County. He married Mary Lou Mitchell on March 23, 1946, in Columbus, Kan. She survives of the home in Anderson, Mo. Additional survivors include two daughters, Ann Langley and Susan Langley, both of Alexandria, Va.; one niece, Karen Miller and husband Ken of Lebanon, Mo.; one great-niece, Kristine Miller of Alexandria, Va.; two cousins, Carl Marney, Jr., and wife Betty of Anderson, Mo., and Betty Marney Mason and husband Jack of Grove, Okla. Cremation is to be done by the Bella Vista Crematory in Bella Vista, Ark. A memorial service for J.P. Langley will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at the Anderson United Methodist Church in Anderson, Mo. The Rev. Gary Rees will officiate. Mr. Francis Edmond Simpkins, 87, of Pineville, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 7:10 p.m. at Freeman-Neosho Hospital after an illness. Mr. Francis Simpkins was born Dec. 6, 1915, near Hoxi, Kan., to the late Pearl Allen and Mary Belle (Weaver) Simpkins. He has lived in Pineville for five years, coming from Arkansas. He also spent many years in Iowa. He was a member of the Lanagan Jehovah’s Witness. Survivors include his wife, Betty Simpkins; one son, John “Jack” Simpkins of Cabot, Ark.; one daughter, Francine Hoyer of Pineville, Mo.; three grandsons; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation is to be done by the Bella Vista Crematory in Bella Vista, Ark. Mr. Hobart Coleman Bartley, 70, of Anderson, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at 8:10 p.m. at St. John’s Rehabilitation Center, Brady Building in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. Mr. Bartley was born May 4, 1932, in Anderson, Mo., to the late Hobart McKinley and Eskel Mae (Reed) Bartley. He had lived in the Anderson area all of his life. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict, two tours of Vietnam, overseas assignments in Africa, England and Japan. He was the recipient of National Defense Service Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, three Over Seas Bars, Bronze Service Star, Meritorious Unit Citation, Vietnam County Offensive Campaign and a Vietnam Counter Offensive PN #2. He was a member of the VFW McDonald County Post #4257. He married Barbara Haddock July 3, 1953. She preceded him in death March 28, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Sherman Bartley and Jim Bartley and a grandson, Zachary Bartley. He married Lynette Schultz on July 17, 1994. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons, G. Mark Bartley of Rogers, Ark., and Randall Lee Bartley of Hensley, Ark.; three daughters, Renita Dawn Woodward of Neosho, Mo., Valerie Ann Smith of Kennett, Mo., and Rebecca Kaye Bartley of Joplin, Mo.; two sisters, Veldonah Smith of Wyandotte, Okla., and Lenora Gaston of Belton, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He had lived in the area all of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Stella Masonic Lodge. He owned and operated carnell Trucking. He was also a farmer. He married Doris Maureen Francisco Nov. 27, 1952. She survives of the home in Rocky Comfort, Mo. Additional survivors include one daughter, Nina Hatfield and her husband Scott of Rocky Comfort, Mo.; three brothers, John Geller, Huck Geller and G.W. “Dub” Geller, all of Neosho, Mo.; two sisters, Peggy O’Dell of Joplin, Mo., Kay Landers of Pineville, Mo.; two grandsons, Scotty Hatfield, Jr., and James Matthew Hatfield. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Elmer and Eula Geller, and one brother, Jim Geller. Ashley Nicole Taylor, one year old infant daughter of Randy and Susan (Arnett) Taylor of Anderson, Mo., died at 1:49 a.m. at Freeman Neosho Hospital in Neosho, Mo. Ashley was born Jan. 9, 2002, at Joplin, Mo. She attended Banner Nazarene Church in Splitlog, Mo., with her family. Survivors include her parents; two brothers, Randy Taylor, Jr., and Nathan Taylor, both of the home; paternal grandparents, Ronnie Estes of Galena, Mo., and Kathleen Payne of Bakersfield, Calif.; maternal grandparents, Louise Arnett and Ray Arnett, both of Anderson, Mo.; many uncles, aunts and cousins. Graveside services for Ashley Nicole Taylor will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the Banner Cemetery in Splitlog, Mo. The Rev. Dennis Bergen will officiate.
