ANNIE JIM (YEARWOOD) MASTERS
Annie Jim (Yearwood) Masters, 94, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Nov. 8, 2004, at John Knox Village Care Center.
Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in the Windsor Room at John Knox Village; inurnment in Longview Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to John Knox Village Auxiliary.
Annie was born Dec. 12, 1909, in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
She was a cost accountant, retired from the Marley Company.
A nearly 30 year resident of John Knox Village, she was an active participant in various activities and organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert O. Masters.
Survivors include a son, David and his wife, Mary, Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren, Katherine Dunckel, Calistoga, Calif., and David Masters Jr. and Andrew Masters, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and eight great-grandchildren.

DORIS LEE MOUNTAIN
Doris Lee Mountain, 83, of Centerview, Mo., passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
Funeral services were Nov. 9, at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City; burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor.
Doris was born on May 29, 1921, in Kansas City, Kan.
She was employed at Research Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Mountain, in April 2000; and a daughter, Jackie.
Survivors include sons, Albert Mountain and wife, Patty, Centerview, and Danny Mountain and wife, Carla, Peculiar, Mo.; three daughters; sister-in-law, Agnes Madole, Lee’s Summit; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

FRED “BUD” GARRETSON
Fred “Bud” Garretson, 62, of Lee’s Summit and Flemington, Mo., passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at his home in Lee’s Summit.
Funeral services were Nov. 2, at Langsford Funeral Home; burial in Salem Cemetery, Cliquot, Mo.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bud Garretson Youth Sports Memorial Fund, c/o the funeral home.

JAMES C. MATTHEWS
James C. Matthews, 95, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the Village Care Center.
Graveside services were Nov. 2, at Elmwood Cemetery, Mexico, Mo.
The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Matthews was born in Mexico, and reared in Fulton, Mo., where he graduated from Westminster College in 1931.
He worked in the wholesale paper distribution business for 51 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 1974, as general sales manager for Bermingham and Prosser Co., now known as Zellerbach, a Mead company.
After retirement, he continued the association with the Mead Co. for 10 years as a consultant.
He was a member of the Wornall Road Baptist Church from 1945 to 1978 during which time he served in 19 different appointive or elective positions.
He served as chairman of deacons from 1955 to 1956, and again from 1976 to 1977.
He was a longtime member of Friends of Art and a member of Indian Hills Country Club before retiring to Lee’s Summit in 1977.
He had lived in Kansas City, Mo. since 1945, moving from St. Louis, Mo., where he had lived since 1934.
In Lee’s Summit, he was a member of John Knox Lions Club and First Presbyterian Church of Lee’s Summit.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Weed and her husband, Peter, New York, N.Y.; a son, Robert Matthews and his wife, Carol, Mountain View, Calif.; his sister-in-law, Ruth Holman, Lee’s Summit; and four grandchildren.

JAMES E. PICKETT
James E. Pickett, 50, of Columbia, Mo., passed away Oct. 21, 2004, at his home.
Memorial services are at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2207 Holly Avenue, Columbia, Mo.
James was born July 8, 1954, in Portsmouth, Va., the son of Robert H. Pickett and Iva M. Pickett, Carrollton, Mo.
He was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School, North Tonawanda, N.Y.
He was self-employed in the construction and maintenance of radio and television towers.
James was associated with the Oakland Park Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Columbia.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert H. Pickett; two brothers; and a nephew.
James is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Eric Current, Clark, Mo.; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Erin Pickett, Alvin, Texas; son, James Pickett, Austin, Texas; son, David Pickett, Columbia; grandchildren, Ian Current and Ethan Pickett; mother, Iva M. Pickett, Carrollton; brother, Stephen Pickett, Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Sharon Laing, Lee’s Summit; brother, Nathan Pickett, Dearborn, Mo.; three nieces; and one nephew.

THELMA LAVERNE (HODGES) SHIPLEY

Thelma Laverne (Hodges) Shipley, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Oct. 28, 2004, at her home.
Funeral services were Nov. 1, at Langsford Funeral Home; burial in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, Mo.
Memorial contributions may be made to John Knox Hospice or Lee’s Summit Social Services.
Thelma was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Archie, Mo.
She was raised on a dairy farm in Archie, and attended Archie High School, where she met and later married her lifelong partner, Lester. After high school she attended Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Mo. for one year.
Lester and Thelma moved to Lee’s Summit in 1956, where they raised their three children.
Thelma loved to travel; she joined Lester in Germany when he was in the Army, and they traveled all over Europe.
She also visited Austria, Germany and France with the Lee’s Summit Orchestra in 1984 as a chaperone.
She retired from the Lee’s Summit School District after many years of serving in both a volunteer and employee capacity. She was very involved in community activities as well as an avid supporter of Lee’s Summit High School athletics.
Most remember her keeping score for the girls basketball games.
She was a mom to many other high school kids beside her own.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit for 33 years, where she and Lester were very active in Sunday school and youth group.
She was one of the founding members of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible school, was a member of the choir, was active in various women’s groups and helped in whatever area needed her.
She was a guest speaker at many local organizations presenting programs on a myriad of topics, which she loved to research.
She loved to present, educate and entertain.
She was active in many organizations such as MAEOP, XXV Study Club and the Lee’s Summit Concert series.
She loved music, reading, kids and just being around people, and anyone who knew Thelma well, knew how much she loved Branson, Mo.
She always wanted to visit as many shows as she could and many times got to know the performers, especially the young family groups.
Thelma never knew a stranger.
Within minutes of meeting you, she knew your life story.
Her family was very important to her and she loved spending time with her children and their families, as well as her sisters and their families.
Holidays were a true family event.
She is joined in Heaven by her parents, Philip and Phyllis Hodges; and one sister, Wanda Kay Osborn.
Thelma is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lester Shipley; three children and their families, Kent Shipley, his wife, Dee, and their children, Jordan and Jocelyn, Kansas City, Kan., Kevin Shipley, his wife, Teri, and their children, Kali, Kaleb, Christopher, Eli, Laurie and Benjamin, Kansas City, Mo., and Lisa Wall, her husband, Roy, and their daughter, Lindsey, Lee’s Summit; two sisters, Virginia Smith and her husband, Don, Archie, and Carole Lynn Arnold and her husband, Jim, Archie; and a host of nieces and nephews and other extended family.

Donald Fredrick Whitehouse, 69, Lee’s Summit, passed away Oct. 29, 2004, at his home.

Lois M. Drake, 84, Belton, died Oct. 26, 2004, at Camden Health Care Center.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Langsford Funeral Home; burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

MRS. CATHERINE M. MCCULLOH
Mrs. Catherine Marie McCulloh, of Garden City, Mo., was born April 23, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Ira and Ruth Eileen (Wood) Coy.
She departed this life on Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo., at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 2 days.
On Jan. 24, 1942, Catherine was united in marriage to Robert Beverly McCulloh.
Catherine was a homemaker.
She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Independence, a member of Dayton Community Church near Garden City, and helped with Friendship Meals.
Catherine enjoyed her pets, three dogs and one cat.
She had lived on the family farm for more than 50 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on Jan. 23, 1986; and an infant son, James Leslie McCulloh.
She is survived by one son, Charles B. McCulloh and wife, Joyce, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Linda Murphy and husband, Darryll, Lee’s Summit; four grandchildren, Clint and Jesse Pringle, Janell McCulloh Taylor and Jessica McCulloh; one step-grandson, Robert Murphy; eight grandchildren, Madison, Dathan, Cierra, Austin, Sareal, Devin, Brenna and Wesley; one sister, Eileen Beal, Independence; and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
Rev. Scott A. Walker will officiate.
Burial in Garden City Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Dayton Community Church or Friendship Meals, Garden City.
