MARGARET (TIMMERMAN) ANDES
Margaret (Timmerman) Andes, 93, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at John Knox Care Center, Lee’s Summit.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Lee’s Summit Bible Church; burial in Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lee’s Summit Bible Church or a charity of your choice.
Margaret was born Jan. 5, 1911, in Glenwood, Wash.
She married Robert E. Andes on June 12, 1957, and taught elementary school in Nebraska and Kansas for 44 years before retiring.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1992; parents, Rollo and Ruth Timmerman; and one brother, Clifford Timmerman.
Survivors include sisters, Eleanor Timmerman, Lee’s Summit, and Florence Goin, Grand Junction, Colo.; brother, Kenneth Timmerman, Preston Park, Pa.; sister-in-law, Lois Timmerman, Chandler, Ariz.; a son, Benjamin David, and his wife, JoAnn, Lee’s Summit; two daughters, Clara Ellen, and her husband, Tom Henre, North Augusta, Ga., and Bobby Jean Monaghan, Jacksonville, Ga.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 13 nieces and nephews, and their families; cousins; and many friends.

JOSEPHINE “JOSIE” HEISTERBERG
Josephine “Josie” Heister-berg, 98 years, six months, of Cole Camp, Mo., passed away Sept. 30, 2004, with her children at her bedside, at Bothwell Regional Health Center, Sedalia, Mo., of complications from a broken hip.
Josie was born March 30, 1906, on the family farm, to Henry J. and Katerine A. (Eickhoff) Von Holton.
She married John Christopher Heisterberg on April 21, 1924, and they were happily married for 64 years before he passed away.
Josie was famous for her wonderful cooking, especially her home baked bread, pies and cookies.
Every grandchild and great-grandchild had their favorite when they visited, and Grandma would make them all! Johnny and Josie were well known all through Benton County, volunteering and helping with games, church visits and entertaining or feeding residents at the nursing homes.
They loved to entertain friends and played cards two to three times a week after moving into town.
In addition to her husband, John, Josie was preceded in death by her parents; and her only sibling, Alwin Von Holton.
She is survived by one son, Arlie Heisterberg and his wife, Donna, longtime residents of Lee’s Summit, and their three children, Christopher Heisterberg and wife, Phyllis, Pleasant Hill, Rhonda Bowen and husband, Rob, Lee’s Summit, and Kadi Kneib and husband, Tom, Raymore; one daughter, Darlyne Davis, St. Louis, Mo., and her six children; 19 great-grandchildren; and several great great-grandchildren.
She will be missed by all who loved her wonderful smile and kind soul.
After services were over, her granddaughter, Kadi, used her grandma’s favorite cookie recipe and shared Grandma’s famous cookies with all who were present.

JOANN BARNEY
JoAnn Barney, 71, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Lee’s Summit Hospital.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Langsford Funeral Home.
JoAnn was born Nov. 12, 1932.
She is survived by her daughter, Jaqui Barney; her sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Paul and Nancy Barney, and Michael Jon and Beth Barney; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SUE ELLEN DECKER
Sue Ellen Decker, 46, of Newport, N.C., formerly of Lee’s Summit, passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, N.C.
Funeral services were Oct. 5, in Newport.
Memorial contributions may be made to Relay for Life, Attn: Liz Davey, 5002 Midyette Ave., Morehead City, NC 28557.
Sue was born July 30, 1958, in Ottumwa, Iowa.
She was a 1976 graduate of Lee’s Summit High School.
She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn DeGroot; grandparents, Anthony and Margaret DeGroot, Ottumwa; and her grandfather, Ralph Ward, Sigourney, Iowa.
Sue is survived by her husband, Hurley M. Decker, of the home; two daughters, Nicolette Diane DeGroot, Boone, N.C., and Amanda Lynn Decker, of the home; a son, Nathan Vernon Decker, of the home; mother, Linda DeGroot, Lee’s Summit; sister, Diane DeGroot, Lee’s Summit; brother, Greg DeGroot, Belton, Mo.; and grandmother, Hazel Ward, Sigourney.

ETHEL G. SMITH
Ethel G. Smith, 89, longtime resident of Lee’s Summit, passed away Oct. 7, 2004, in Fairfield, Conn., following a long illness.
Mrs. Smith and her family were longtime members of Unity and all three of her children graduated from the Lee’s Summit school system.
She worked at Hazel Grove Elementary and Lee’s Summit High School prior to working for and retiring from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
She lived in Venice, Fla. until her illness required her to move to St. Louis, Mo. and then to Fairfield.
Mrs. Smith was the wife of the late Glenn Smith and mother of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Smith-Stone.
She is survived by her sons, Alan (Rhona) Smith, Fairfield, and Gene (Donna) Smith, Florissant, Mo.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

MARTHA CAROLINE (GEORGE) HINES
In the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, Martha Caroline (George) Hines passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.
A celebration of her life was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, Leawood, Kan.
A private burial service will be held at a later time.
Caroline, affectionately known as Kay, was born May 26, 1922, in Lee’s Summit, to past Lee’s Summit mayor, Todd Menzies George and Florie (Andrews) George.
She graduated from Lee’s Summit High School in 1940, and attended the University of Missouri, where she joined the Delta Gamma sorority.
She worked during World War II at Pratt and Whitney to support the war effort.
Caroline married Robert Carter Hines on Aug. 1, 1946, at the Episcopal Church in Lee’s Summit.
To this union, two sons were born, Robert and Richard, who were raised in the Kansas City area.
Caroline was a member of the Johnson County Young Matrons, and was instrumental in founding TLC (Temporary Lodging for Children) in Olathe, Kan.
She was past president of the Mother’s Club of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at the University of Kansas.
After a brief time living near Chicago, Ill., she returned to Kansas City following the death of her husband in 1967.
She moved to Sun City, Ariz. in 1975, where she was active in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Caroline loved traveling, fishing, boating, needlepoint and being in the company of family and friends.
She was a wonderful listener, never judgmental and always understanding.
A true lady in every sense of the word, who had an endearing sense of humor.
To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die.
Caroline was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Todd M. George Jr.; and sisters, Hardage Virginia George and Edith Helen (George) Dicus.
Caroline was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She will be missed by her sons, Robert C. Hines Jr. and wife, Carla, San Diego, Calif., and Dr. Richard A. Hines and wife, Kathy, Leawood, Kan.; her dear sister and companion, Florie Ann (George) Switzer, Sun City; grandchildren, Brandon and Taylor Hines, San Diego, Kelly (Michael) Goodell and Rob Hines, Atlanta, Ga., Carter Hines, Houston, Texas, Amy (Bill) Kapsalis, Kansas City, Mo., Christopher (Beth) Hines, Denver, Colo., Ryan (Angie) Hines, Gardner, Kan., and Lauren (Brian) Hampton, Spring Hill, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Ansley and Bryson; and nieces and nephews, Linda (Ken) Ornes, Laurie (Mike) Rasmussen, Steven (Jolene) Dicus, Paul (Rose) Dicus, Todd Dicus, Kent Dicus, Michael Ohlson, Brian (Vallie) Dicus, Ann (Jerry) Walters, and Martha (Roger) Crotty.

James Clifford Miller, 58, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Monday, Oct. 4, 2004.

Jane Stafford, 77, of Lee’s Summit, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Lee’s Summit Hospital.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Langsford Funeral Home; burial in Lee’s Summit Cemetery.

DOROTHY ANN (GARRETT) ALEXANDER
Dorothy Ann (Garrett) Alexander, 75, of Lee’s Summit, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family, on Oct. 4, 2004, after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at Langsford Funeral Home, 115 S.W. Third St., Lee’s Summit.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Dorothy was born Aug. 2, 1929, in Sedalia, Mo., to Hannah Margaret and Ellis Gerald Garrett.
She graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1947, and attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo.
She was a member of Unity Village Church.
She married Robert D. Alexander, D.D.S. on June 17, 1950, and was happily married for nearly 50 years before he passed away.
She was a member of the Junior Service League of Independence, where she volunteered as a tour guide at the Truman Presidential Library. Dorothy loved to entertain and travel with family and friends.
She made friends wherever she went, and was known for her beautiful laugh and wonderful cooking skills.
Dorothy and Bob lived in Independence from 1956 until 1989, when they retired to the Lake of the Ozarks.
They returned to Lee’s Summit in 1994.
Since 1966, they had owned multiple properties at Lake Lotawana, and had many happy memories of family and friends at the lake.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
She is survived by one son, Michael Alexander and wife, Kimberly, Blue Springs; two daughters, Kristin Paden, Olathe, Kan., and Shere Parker, Lee’s Summit; sister, Rae Carolyn Miller, Ankeny, Iowa; and eight of the world’s best grandchildren, Jessica, Andrew, Kyle, Alysha, Rebecca, Kevin, McKenzie and Carly.
The family is especially grateful for the wonderful care Dorothy received from Dr. Kimberly Davis and the Infusion Lab nurses at the Kansas City Cancer Center.
Through her many years of treatment, she remained optimistic and led an active life.
The family suggests donations to Kansas City Hospice or Harvesters Food Bank, or would be happy if you sent flowers to your mothers or other loved ones.
