Annie Laura High
Jackson
Annie Laura High, 97, of Jackson, died August 7, 2004, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Funeral services were held Aug. 11 at Crossroad Church of God in Farmhaven with burial in Garrett Memorial Cemetery in Farmhaven.
Mrs. High was married to Solomon Lindsey High who preceded her in death. She was a dedicated member of Crossroad Church of God in Farmhaven until she moved to Jackson to live with her niece, Annie Ruth Walker. Her greatest joy was working beside her husband in organizing the first County Negro Fair. She was founder of the High Hill School, which later became Madison County Rosenwald. They opened the Commercial College for G.I.s and the housing of the N.Y. School for Girls.
The couple operated the second African-American funeral home in Canton, High Funeral Home. She continued to operate the funeral home several years after her husband's death. She was one of the founders of the Lucy C. Jefferson Federated Club in Canton. The club's original organization date was May 1, 1938, at that time Mrs. High served as treasurer. In 1976-78 she served as second vice president.
Survivors include: her niece, Annie Ruth Walker and husband Tillman of Jackson; great-niece, Gwendolyn Walker of Jackson; godson, William Watts and wife Hurstine of Canton; and other family members and friends.

Joe Lindsey Pickett Jr.
Canton
Joe Lindsey Pickett Jr., 91, of Canton, died August 5, 2004, at Madison County Medical Center in Canton.
Funeral services were held Aug. 10 at Free Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Canton with burial in the church cemetery.
Survivors include: his daughters, Mattie Bell Daniels of Jackson and Lillie Pearl Adams Winfield and husband Hosea of Canton; his sisters, Collie Pickett and Susie Johnson, both of Canton; granddaughters whom he reared, Dorothy Dupree and JoAnn Johnson and husband Bobby of Jackson; special friend, Lois Chambers; daughters-in-law, Linnie Johnson of Canton and Annie Lee Johnson of Gary, Ind.; special niece, Oneal Bell of Canton; and 26 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Emily Hakim Joseph
Jackson
Emily Hakim Joseph, 85, of Jackson, a homemaker, died July 27, 2004, at St. Catherine's Village in Madison.
A memorial service and Mass was held July 30 at Saint Richard Catholic Church in Jackson with burial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland.
A lifelong resident of Jackson, she was a communicant of St. Richard Catholic Church. She cherished her Lebanese ancestry and was recognized for her love of Lebanese family, tradition, culinary arts and dancing.
Survivors include: her daughter, Mary Louise Joseph Jones and husband Dr. W. Arthur Jones of Ridgeland; sons, Albert Paul Joseph of New York City and William Paul Joseph Jr. of Jackson; and grandchildren, W. Arthur Jones III of Washington, D.C., Joseph Andrew Jones of Chicago, and Elizabeth Louise Jones of Dallas.
Memorials may be made to St. Dominic Hospital Auxiliary, Saint Richard Catholic Church Building Fund or St. Catherine's Village Foundation.

Fredrick W. Simmons
Madison
Fredrick W. Simmons, 64, of Madison, died July 27, 2004, at River Oaks Hospital in Flowood.
Funeral services were held July 30 at Lakewood Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Mr. Simmons a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School, Hinds Community College and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. He was a ticket agent with Delta Airlines retiring after 28 years.
Survivors include: his wife of 17 years, Doris Hill Simmons of Madison; his sons, Mason Simmons of Gainesville, Fla., Keith Brown and wife Dixie of Brandon; his daughters, Tracy Simmons Heron and husband Dennis of Tennessee, Renee Simmons of Jackson, Connie Brown Perez and husband Roland of Brandon; sister, Catherine Simmons Eaves and husband Mike of Jackson; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Dorothy L. Evans Harper
Canton
Dorothy L. Evans Harper, 66, of Canton, died July 28, 2004, at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Funeral services were held July 31 at Canton United Methodist Church in Canton with burial in Onisha Burks Memorial Cemetery in Canton.
Mrs. Harper was employed before her health failed with Udico Manufacturing Co. and Allibaster Plastic Co., both located in Canton.
Survivors include: her husband of 51 years, Milton Harper Jr. of Canton; her daughters, Patricia H. Clifton and Bertha Ollie, both of Canton; sisters, Betty Adams and husband Earl, Gladys Thornton and husband Isadore and Shirley M. McGruder, all of Canton; brothers, Percy Evans and wife Beatrice, Charlie C. Evans, both of Chicago, and John H. Evans Jr.of Canton; 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Danny Earl Lee
Flora
Danny Earl Lee, 58, of Flora, died July 30, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services were held Aug. 2 at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland with entombment following in the Trinity Mausoleum at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include: his wife, Kathy H. Lee of Flora; his daughters, Danya Lee, Lorri Lee McKeown, Amanda Lee Smira and husband Kevin, and Leslea Lee; brothers, Ronnie Ravenstein and Tommy Thomas; six grandchildren; two aunts, two cousins and three nieces.
Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society or to Flora United Methodist Church.

Johnny Lee Ball
Fredrick Michael Ball
Canton
Johnny Lee Ball, 43, and Fredrick Michael Ball, 36, both of Canton, died July 19, 2004.
Funeral services were held July 23 at Family Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Johnny Lee and Fredrick Michael, foundation construction workers, were the sons of the late David Ball and the late Mrs. Pauline Robertson Ball.
Survivors include: Johnny's children, Lucy Lee Tucker and Janston Jentayitus Ball, both of Canton; and Fredrick's daughter, Monique Tucker of Canton; their sister, Betty Jackson and husband James; and their brother, James David Ball of Canton.

Dorothy Faye Allen
Rankin County
Dorothy Faye Allen, 61, of Rankin County, died Aug. 1, 2004, at St. Dominic/Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Aug. 3 at Rock Hill Baptist Church in Brandon with burial in Rehobeth Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen was a lifelong resident of Rankin County. She was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Brandon.
Survivors include: her daughter, Gina Allen of Brandon; her son, Glenn Allen of Canton; sisters, Beverly Henry of Richland and Ola Mae McNeece of Iuka; brother, Sidney Tagert of Pelahatchie; grandchildren, Abbye Allen, Paul Allen, Phillip Allen and Lydia Allen, all of Canton.
Memorials may be made to Rock Hill Baptist Church, 4656 Hwy. 18, Brandon MS 39042.
