HURLEY - Annie Irene Baria, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, in Pascagoula. Mrs. Baria was born Sept. 14, 1910, in Wade, and was retired as a seamstress with Cinderella Mills after 30 years. She was a member of Hurley United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Baria; a daughter, Anita Butler; and her parents, Preston and Addie Johnson. Survivors include four daughters, Della Woods and Marie Coyel, both of Fort Worth, Texas, Onnie Rucker of Wade and Linda Tigner of Hurley; a sister, Bessie Mae Nix of Booneville; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Holder-Wells Funeral Home in Moss Point. A service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hurley United Methodist Church where friends may call one hour before service time. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery in Hurley.

Ellen Barber Batson

WIGGINS - Ellen Barber Batson passed away on December 4, 2000, at her home in Wiggins, Mississippi. Mrs. Batson was born October 7, 1924, in Moultrie, Georgia. She was graduated from Moultrie High School and Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and Martha Spencer Barber and her brother, LeRoy Robert Barber. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Brax Hartness Batson of Wiggins. She is also survived by three daughters, Suellen Morrison (James) of Wiggins, Sally Setterstrom of Mobile, AL, and Anne Stewart (Michael) of Vicksburg, MS; one son, Braxton Scott Batson of Wiggins; one daughter-in-law, Norma McRaney Batson of Wiggins; and one brother, John Spencer Barber of Hattiesburg. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Emily Batson Overstreet, Braxton Chet Batson, Katie Marie Batson, Benjamin Scott Prewitt, Cullen Joseph Stewart, William Wallace Morrison, Martha Elizabeth Morrison, Katherine Ellen Setterstrom and Sarah Anne Setterstrom, and one great-granddaughter, Anna Katherine Overstreet, and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Batson was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Wiggins where she taught kindergarten for 23 years. She was active in church and civic affairs. She was a Christian, wife, mother, teacher, artist, caregiver, and always a lady. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Wiggins on Thursday, December 7, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Thomas Price Memorial Cemetery in Stone County. Willie Ross Davis Sr.

COLUMBUS - Willie Ross "Bill" Davis Sr., 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, in Tupelo. Mr. Davis was born April 1, 1922, in Brooklyn, Miss., and was a graduate of Forrest County Agricultural High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired as a construction superintendent with Ceco Building Systems and Gulf States Manufacturers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther C. and Noma Bounds Davis. Survivors include his wife, Zora Mayronne Davis of Columbus; two sons, Willie R. Davis Jr. of Caledonia and Michael Wayne Davis of Memphis; a daughter, Katherine Ann Davis Heatherly of Palm Coast, Fla.; a brother, Roland Wayne Davis of Brooklyn; two sisters, Carolyn Davis Yeager of Wiggins and Mildred Davis Mangum of Magee; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Gunter and Peel Funeral Home in Columbus. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Forrest County. GULFPORT - Billy B. Dewberry, 64, of Gulfport, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, in Gulfport. Mr. Dewberry was a native of Brownwood, TX, and had been a resident of Gulfport for the last four years. He attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood and served in the Navy Reserves. At the time of his death he was employed at Carpet Mart in Gulfport. He served as Commissioner for Texas Dixie Baseball for many years and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Carroll and Willie Bessie Dewberry; a brother, Joseph O. Dewberry; and a sister, Winnie Elizabeth McClain. Survivors include his wife, Laura V. Dewberry of Gulfport; two sons, William "Billy" Joseph Dewberry and Jason C. Dewberry, both of Gulfport; two daughters, Kristie Lea Dewberry of Gulfport and Reba Renee Masterjohn of Seattle, WA; four sisters, Sara Bess Spivey and Iris Ruth Pace, both of Brownwood, TX, Clemmie Calk of Boerne, TX, and Jo Ann Tanton of El Dorado, AR; a granddaughter Amanda Michelle Parson; a great-granddaughter, Kaylee Renee Parson; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Riemann Funeral Home on 25th Avenue in Gulfport where friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time. OCEAN SPRINGS - Mrs. Dimple Hill, 82, of Ocean Springs, passed from this life into the arms of God on Tuesday, December 5, 2000, in Ocean Springs. Mrs. Hill was born in Iuka, MS. She had lived on the Gulf Coast for over 40 years. She was a member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church where she was the secretary/treasurer for several years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Robert Hill; a daughter, Frances Whyte; two sons, James P. Hill and James R. Hill; two grandsons, Mark T. Whyte and Curtis H. McGee; a great-grandson, Nicky Hawkins; a sister, Gladys Pate; and two brothers, Forrest L. Nunley and Preston Nunley. She will be sadly missed by her four daughters and sons-in-law, Willa Peterson and husband, Mason of Gulfport, Nora Faye Severns and husband, David of D'Iberville, Johnnie Sue Oakes and husband, John "Buster" of Biloxi and Jessie M. Hall, also of Biloxi; one brother, Oliver Paul Nunley of Iuka, MS; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends. GULFPORT - Mrs. Elizabeth Wendel Barry Johnson, age 100, and a resident of Gulfport, MS, died Monday, December 4, 2000, in Gulfport. Mrs. Johnson was a native of New Orleans, LA, and a resident of Gulfport for the past 38 years. She received degrees from Smith College in New York, Loyola in New Orleans, and the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Mrs. Johnson was a teacher and an accomplished pianist, and was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy at Beauvoir in Biloxi, MS, and was a member of Handsboro Presbyterian Church in Gulfport. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a daughter, Kate J. Ellison; and a son, E. Barry Johnson. Survivors include a granddaughter, Eleanor Gourley of Birmingham, AL; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Gourley of Beaufort, SC, and Paul Gourley III of Birmingham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Ray; a daughter, Martha Jenkins; and a son, Floyd Ray Jr. Survivors include five daughters, Nedra Oswalt, Bettye Tucker and June Cooper, all of Jackson, Jimmie Smith of Starkville, and Linda Bonney of Pass Christian; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Mr. Roberson was a native of McRae, Georgia, and a resident of the Coast for 30 years. Mr. Roberson retired after serving 28 years in the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sgt. He also worked in Civil Service at Keesler Air Force Base in the education office as an education services specialist for 18 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lee Roberson; two brothers, Delbert and James Davis; and two sisters, Millie Lou Cobb and Nelda McClain. GAUTIER - Anthony Gerard "Jerry" Willis Jr., 44, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, in Pascagoula. Mr. Willis was born Oct. 28, 1956, in Moorehead City, N.C., and was a graduate of Pascagoula High School. He was a musician and guitarist and was employed with a number of bands in the Southeastern United States. He was a member of Singing River Baptist Church in Gautier. He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Gerard "Jerry" Willis Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Brandi Willis; a son, Wesley Willis, both of Ocean Springs; his mother, Mary Sue Atkins of Gautier; his stepmother, Ann Willis of Helena; a sister, Stephanie Willis Yogi of Norco, Calif.; and four brothers, Stephen Willis of Ocean Springs, Wayne Truitt of Gautier, Christopher Brown of Hernando and Jody Willis of Pascagoula. HENDERSON, Nev. - Robert Henry Bowman, 67, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, in Las Vegas. Mr. Bowman was born Aug. 6, 1930, in Elk City, Okla., and was a Marine veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired jewelry salesman. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Bowman of Henderson; a son, Christopher Bowman of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Chuck "Frank" Bowman of Biloxi; and a grandchild. Private services will be held. BOGALUSA, La. - Samuel R. "Sammie" Carpenter, 62, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, in Bogalusa. Mr. Carpenter was a native of Picayune, where he lived for a number of years before moving to Bogalusa. He was a member of Lee's Creek Baptist Church in Bogalusa. Survivors include four sisters, Thelma Parks of Albany, Ga., Angie O'Bryant, Alberta Corkern and Melvina Brooks, all of Bogalusa. Dale Allen Clink

GULFPORT - Dale Allen Clink, 42, of Gulfport, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, in St. Cloud, Minn. Mr. Clink was born December 13, 1955, in Harmony, Minn. He was baptized January 15, 1956, at Fremont Lutheran Church in rural Cresco, Iowa, and was confirmed July 11, 1971, at Fremont Lutheran Church. Mr. Clink attended schools in Harmony, Minn., and Cresco, Iowa, and graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in Pequot Lakes, Minn., on May 23, 1974. In August 1974 he joined the U.S. Navy Seabees Branch. Through the years he was home-based at Norfolk, Va.; Coos Bay, Ore.; Gulfport, Miss.; and San Diego, Calif. On June 19, 1987, he married Brenda Dangler. Dale retired from the Navy on November 30, 1995, as a Chief. He and his wife, Brenda, settled in Gulfport, where he worked at Winddance Golf Course. Brenda passed away on January 7, 1996. Dale passed away on February 8, 1998, at the Veteran's Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Dangler; his grandparents; and two nephews. Survivors include his parents, Charles and LaVonne Clink of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; a sister, brother-in-law and nieces, Ruthie and Dale Fritcher, Melissa and Barbara, all of Lime Springs, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, David and Julie Clink, Chad and Linda, all of Green Bay, Wisc., Don and Tess Clink, Analissa, Andrea, Billy, Christine, Ricky and Mark, all of San Diego, Calif., Dwain Clink of Victoria, Minn., Dean and Monica Clink, Nicole, Lisa and Jordan, all of Pequot Lakes, Daryl and Stacy Clink, Ben and Jill, all of Breezy Point, Minn., and Danny and Mary Clink, Logan and Brennan, all of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Charles and Gina Davis and stepgrandson, Dillon Davis, all of Gulfport. GULFPORT - James Paul Duffy, 82, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, in Biloxi. Mr. Duffy was born in Chicago and had been a resident of Gulfport for over six years. He was a retired salesman in hotel food management. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and received the American Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, Good Conduct medal and WWII Victory medal. He was Catholic. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia J. Duffy of Chicago; a son, John D. Duffy of Cincinnati; two sisters, Mary V. Peloguin of Blue Island, Ill., and Eileen Eller of Antioch, Ill; and three grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the U.S. Naval Home Chapel in Gulfport. BAY ST. LOUIS - William "Bill" Hodgins III, 70, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, in Bay St. Louis. Mr. Hodgins was a native of New Orleans and was a retired salesman with a pharmaceutical company. He was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Huber Hodgins; and his parents, William Jr. and Elizabeth Drummond Hodgins. Survivors include a son, William "Bill" Hodgins IV; a daughter, Kathleen Fucich, both of Bay St. Louis; a sister, Mary Hodgins Stidd of New Orleans; and five granddaughters. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis with recitation of the rosary at 8:30. A service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with burial in Gulf Coast Memorial Mausoleum.

Mary Frances Johnston

BAY ST. LOUIS - Mary Frances Johnston, 49, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in Gulfport. Mrs. Johnston was a native of Bay St. Louis and was a cook at the school cafeteria. She was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Yarborough; and a brother, Jeff Yarbrough. Survivors include her husband, Richard Johnston Jr. of Bay St. Louis; two sons, Richard D. "Rickki" Johnston and Donald P. Johnston, both of Bay St. Louis; a daughter, Angela Johnston of Palm Bay, Fla.; her mother, Lois Yarborough of Waveland; two brothers, David Yarborough of Long Beach and Walter Yarborough of D'Iberville; four sisters, Paulette Shiyou and Bonnie LaFontaine, both of Bay St. Louis, Brenda Schaffer of Norwalk, Ohio, and Ellen Johnston of Clarksdale; and three grandchildren. A service will be at noon today at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis with burial in Cedar Rest Cemetery in Bay St. Louis. Edward Marion Lindsey
Funeral services: 2 p.m. Friday at Mississippi City United Methodist Church in Gulfport.
GULFPORT - Edward Marion Lindsey, 89, of Gulfport, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Lindsey, a pioneer family of the Gulf Coast, departed this life February 10, 1998, in Biloxi. He graduated from high school in Jackson, Miss., and was president of his class. He attended Millsaps College for two years and Jackson School of Law, graduating as one of eight in a class of thirty. He worked for the WPA project as supervisor of research for the cotton stamp program at the Capitol in Jackson. Mr. Lindsey was a teacher of airplane mechanics at Keesler before opening his office in Biloxi for the practice of law, and later moved his office to Gulfport. He was honored by the Harrison County Bar, along with others, after 50 years of law practice. He was a member of Gulfport Kiwanis Club for many years. Mr. Lindsey retired to his home and part-time practice at the age of 83. He was active in the United Methodist Church and at one time was Chairman of the Church Board, Sunday school teacher, he sang in the choir 17 years, and was active in the Methodist Men's Club. Among his many clients, he was known as "Lawyer Lindsey." Beloved by family and friends, he is survived by his wife, Lydia P. Lindsey; his daughter, Helen L. Dunn, her husband, Gary L. Dunn, all of Gulfport; grandson, Matthew Edward Dunn, of Jackson, Miss.; granddaughters, Lindsey M. Farris, and Ellen Louise Dunn, of Gulfport, Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at the Mississippi City United Methodist Church in Gulfport. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Tom Sorrell of Mississippi City United Methodist Church and the Rev. R. Stewart Smith, United Methodist minister, retired, of Jackson. Visitation with the family will be one hour before the service at the Mississippi City United Methodist Church Fellowship hall in Gulfport. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to the Mississippi City United Methodist Church. Riemann Funeral Home, 25th Avenue in Gulfport, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Hardy Murphy

BILOXI - Charles Hardy Murphy, 79, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in Biloxi. Mr. Murphy was a native of Blakley, Ga., and had been a resident of Biloxi for the last 35 years. He served in the Navy, retiring after 22 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Biloxi. Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Murphy; a son, David Charles Murphy, both of Biloxi; a daughter, Charlene Sarah Murphy Wilson of Spagdalem, Germany; and a sister, Virginia Harmeyer of Valdosta, Ga. A service will be at 1 p.m. today at Riemann Funeral Home on Beauvoir Road in Biloxi where friends may call from noon until service time. A graveisde service with full military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.

Ronald Douglas Person
GULFPORT - Ronald Douglas Person, 32, a resident of Gulfport, died Friday, February 6, 1998, in Gulfport. Mr. Person, a native of North Carolina, was a self-employed fisherman. Survivors include his parents, Anna M. Person of Kona, Hawaii, and Larry D. Person of Seattle, Washington; a sister, Autumn Person of Anchorage, Alaska; and extended family members, Theresa Stennett, Virginia Lee, David Shoemake, and all those friends from the twenty-fourth fellowship. LYMAN - Mrs. Lena Fay Rutland, 63, beloved wife of Lawrence Rutland, entered into eternal life with "Her Lord" on Tuesday, February 10, 1998, in Gulfport. Mrs. Rutland was born in Winnsboro, La. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyman where she served as a Bible drill instructor as well as a discipleship teacher. She truly loved each and every member of her church. The faithful members of her Sunday School Class held a very special place in her heart. Mrs. Rutland was employed by Jay-Jay Chevrolet and the Gulfport Auto Auction as a bookkeeper for many years. Upon retirement, she became a full-time homemaker for her family, a loving caretaker for her mother and a devoted grandmother to her granddaughters. Mrs. Lena Fay Rutland lived her life in service to others. Everything and everyone she touched with her life was made anew because of her humble and loving spirit. She loved as God loves us . . . completely and unconditionally. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney Hynum and Linnie Hynum Allison; and her stepfather, T.H. Allison. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence L. Rutland of Lyman; a son, Larry Rutland of Lyman; daughters and son-in-law, Renee and Eddie E. Ladner of Lyman and Belinda J. Rose of Long Beach; a daughter-in-law, Patty James of Lyman; three granddaughters, Allison and Jennifer Ladner of Lyman and Kaycee Rutland of Oklahoma; and four brothers, John C. Hynum of Lyman, T.H. Allison Jr. of Arkansas, Glen Allison of Leake County and Melvin Allison of Gulfport. GULFPORT - O.D. Smith, 65, of 14 Ingram Court, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in Gulfport. Mr. Smith was born Aug. 17, 1932 in Wesson and had been a resident of Gulfport for over 55 years. He was a member of McDowell Memorial Church of God and Christ. He was preceded in death by his father, Alex Smith; and his mother, Elizabeth Williams. Survivors include a son, Albert Curtis Michael of Norfolk, Va.; four sisters, Alcola Thrasher of Crystal Springs, Virgia Mae Cain of New Orleans and Dotsie Brown and Rosalie Rembert, both of Gulfport. BAY ST. LOUIS - Mary C. Stimler, 82, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in Bay St. Louis. Mrs. Stimler was a native of Cumberland, Md., and was a retired Civilian Personnel Specialist with the Dept. of Army. She was a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, the Miss. Gulf Coast Bowling Assn., NARFE and AARP. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Stimler; her parents, David and Cecelia Feidt Cook; a son, Richard Stimler; and a half-brother, William Harden. Survivors include a son, Robert Stimler of LaMirada, Calif.; a daughter, Elizabeth Puffer of Spencerport, N.Y.; a sister, Ruth Geary of Cumberland; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Claude W. Vereen Sr.

BILOXI - Claude W. Vereen Sr., 76, of 425 Fayard St., died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in Biloxi. Mr. Vereen was a native of Cohay and had been a resident of Biloxi for over 70 years. He attended Biloxi Colored High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was retired from the L&N Railroad and from Civil Service at the Biloxi V.A. He was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Johnnie Brady Vereen; his wife, Dorothy Miller Vereen; four sisters, Ruby Vereen Booker, Ella Vereen Grayer, Zettie Vereen Brandon, and Mary Vereen Burns; and a brother, Wardell Vereen Sr. Survivors include seven daughters, Claudette Vereen Quinn of Glendale, Ariz., Kathleen Needham of Las Vegas, Marcia Vereen, Deborah Vereen Clark, Sandra Vereen and Diane Vereen, all of Biloxi, and Michelle Vereen Hampton of Gulfport; four sons, Claude W. Vereen Jr. of Gulfport, Don C. Vereen of Biloxi, Anthony Vereen of Hammond, La., and Steven Vereen of Houston, Texas; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at New Bethel Baptist Church in Biloxi where friends may call two hours before service time. Burial will be in Biloxi Cemetery. Edgar Wilford Williams

WAVELAND - Edgar Wilford Williams, 74, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, in Waveland. Mr. Williams was a native of New Orleans and was a commercial fisherman. He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford and Ophelia Birdian Williams; a daughter, Joyce Garcia; a brother, Johnny Williams; and two sisters, Mable Minko and Mildred Tastet. Survivors include his wife, Eloise Strong Williams of Waveland; a stepson, Randy Ladner of Lakeshore; a stepdaughter, Diana Seal of Waveland; five brothers, Pete Williams of Kenner, La., Jessie Williams and Steve Williams, both of Metairie, Joe Williams of Shreveport, La., and Gipson Williams of New Orleans; two sisters, Beulah Cuenca Ching of Violet, La., and Anne Wolinski of New Orleans; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis with a recitation of the rosary at noon. A procession will then leave the funeral home at 1:40 p.m. for a 2 p.m. service at St. Clare Catholic Church in Waveland. Burial will be in Lakeshore Cemetery.
