1929:

- Miss Octavia Kirby, who is attending school in Cleveland, spent the weekend with her parents in Silver City.
- On last Saturday, at 8:30, the Belzoni Branch of the Jitney Jungle opened its doors to the public. It served coffee and various lunches during the day. Good music was furnished by the Belzoni Band.
- On May 15th, Mrs. Goodwill, Home Demonstration Agent, visited Louise 4-H Club to assist them in selecting a girl to represent the 4-H Club Congress to be held at A & M College. Irene King was chosen.
- J. H. Webb, former teacher and coach of the Belzoni High School, was greeting his many friends there this week.
- Mr. F. M. Pepper and son, Allen, and daughters, Misses Edna and Mildred, visited relatives in Greenwood Sunday.
- Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wilson and son, John Ed Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Chilton were Greenville visitors Sunday.
- James Porter left Tuesday for Georgetown, MS, to spend the summer months with his grandparents.
- Mrs. H. F. Jones has returned after spending several weeks in Mis-souri.
- Mr. and Mrs. W. W. West, Dr. and Mrs. D. A. Mecklin, Mrs. L. C. Outlaw, Messrs F. B. Bain and T. C. Outlaw attended the graduation exercises at French Camp. Misses Lucille Outlaw, Nellie West and Mr. James Mecklin were among the graduates.
- Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Huchens and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Goldberg are in Dallas, TX, this week attending the Rotary Convention.
- Misses Irene Wadlington and Elizabeth Doyle returned Tuesday from Columbus where they had attended the graduating exercises at Mississippi State College for Women.
- Misses Annabel McAllister, Lucille Wilburn and Mr. Jack Sanderson, who were connected with the Bank of Belzoni for a while, spent the weekend at their homes in Grenada.
- The Royal Ambassadors, an organization for Baptist Boys between the ages of 9 and 13 yrs., was organized in the Baptist Church. The following officers were elected: T. D. Rice, Jr., President; James Sumrall, Vice-President; Jack C. Rice, Secretary; and Percy G. Hovas, Treasurer. The president appointed the following commit-tees: Enlistment Committee, Linton North and Dave Lundy, Jr.; and Courtesy Committee, James Shack-leford, Royal E. North, and W. T. Pritchard.
- Miss Margaret Smith left last week for Ole Miss, where she will attend summer school.

1955:

- Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Calahan and children of Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Chapman, and Mrs. Yerbe of Greenville spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Monk, Sr.
- Rev. and Mrs. Wallace Blackwood of Louisville and Ralph Blackwood, student at Bowling Green University, were the guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Blackwood, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. Blackwood, for the weekend.
- Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Tolbert of Jackson spent the weekend here as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Buck Tolbert and family.
- Mrs. Beatrice Bates, Mrs. Priscilla Hamaker, and Miss Edith Reece attended the State Convention of the B. & P. W. Clubs in Vicksburg last week.
- Mrs. Charles Liles and daughter of Washington, D.C. are guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Phillips. Mrs. Liles will be remembered as the former Miss Margaret McCormick.
- Each year at the closing of school, the B. & P. W. Club awards a medal to the girl student making the highest average in all commercial subjects. The recipient of this year’s award was Miss Dorothy Faye Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Thomas of the Gooden Lake Community. Miss Thomas has done an outstanding job for the past 4 years with an average of 90 or above.
- Mrs. Paul Spikes and son left recently for Frankfurt, Germany, where they will join Mr. Spikes, who is stationed there with the U.S. Army. Mrs. Spikes is the former Miss Jean Taylor of Isola.
- Misses Carolyn Ann and Nancy Shows of Los Angeles, CA, are the guests of their uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Perkins. The young ladies will spend the summer with them.
- Mrs. W. L. Brown left this week for a visit with her parents in Checotah, OK. While there, she will help her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hogan, celebrate their 5oth Wedding Anniversary.
- Mr. and Mrs. John Lindsey Campbell have as their guests this week, their granddaughters, Ann, Carolyn and Sidney Carton of Sumner.
- Mrs. Hannah Goldberger of Memphis is a guest in the home of her sister, Mrs. Joe Goldberg, Sr. Miss Emily Cohn of Memphis was also a recent visitor in the Goldberg home.
- Irby Turner, Thomas Turner, Lucian Wadlington, Bill Allen and Bill Powell were among those in attendance Saturday for the football games in Atlanta.
- June Brock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Brock, was initiated into the Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Zeta Sorority at the University of Alabama on September 18.
- Mrs. W. M. Dansby and children of Philadelphia were weekend guests of Mrs. R. I. Bowman and Mrs. Frank Mechatto.

1968:

- Mrs. Benjamin Alexander Wright of Isola was honored with open house on March 12, 1968, by her granddaughter, Mrs. Newton McMath. The special occasion was Mrs. Wright’s 90th birthday. She has been a resident of Isola since 1898.
- Dr. Howard Nelson, Greenwood physician and chairman of the Mississippi Economic Council’s Committee on Health & Physical Education, announces that Belzoni High School has qualified for the MEC’s Award of Achievement for an acceptable health and physical education program.
- Mrs. Norman Duplain of Belzoni was named one of the top winners from a group of 20 finalists whose clothes epitomized the style and wear ability of cotton. This Cotton Style Revue was held at Delta Council Day in Cleveland.
- Wayne Hodnett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hodnett, was among the 240 graduates at Harding College on May 30. Hodnett received a B.A. degree in elementary education with a minor in English.
- Patricia Ann Stewart of Isola is among 19 young women who received the bachelor of science degree in nursing at University Medical Center’s 12th annual commencement. Mrs. Stewart is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Stewart.
- The new associate members of the Hospital Auxiliary are Mrs. J. A. Cox, Miss Susie Hiler, Mrs. Jean C. Ayers, Mrs. Buddy Bridgers, Mrs. Norman Duplain, Mrs. Cullum Halbrook and Mrs. Cecil Heafner.
- Mrs. Myrtle King is now manager of the new lounge-dining room at the Humphreys County Country Club. Mrs. King comes from Greenville where she has been manager of Mr. Roy’s and recently employed at Holiday Inn.
- Mr. and Mrs. J. R. McClintock returned last week from a six week visit with their son, Bubber, and his family, in Edgemont, California. Bubber will report in August for a year of isolated duty in Thailand.
- Isola places 7 boys on South Sunflower Dixie Youth Baseball All-Star Team. They are Glenn Helms, Ricky Tharp, Glenn Scruggs, Tommy Harper, David Walker, Tommy Farmer and Henry Tirey.
- Technical Sergeant O. V. Huffstickler, brother of Mrs. W. R. Cochran and J. L. Huffstickler, both of Belzoni, has retired from the U.S. Air Force at Columbus AFB after more than 20 years service.
- Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Forester, Jr., Rene and Sammy, returned to their home in Pensacola, Florida, after a week visit with their parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Forester.
- Miss Marion Foster recently left for South America where she has joined the faculty of the Asuncion Christian Academy in Paraguay. Marion is a graduate of Belzoni High School and Delta State University. She is a former teacher at Silver City.
- W. L. Heard, State Conservationist, Soil Conservation Service, recently presented Don Templeton, Humphreys County Conservationist, a Certificate of Merit and cash award for job performance. Mr. Templeton was one of 34 employees receiving recognition of superiority in their work.
- George C. Cartwright of Belzoni has been pledged to the Sigma Chi fraternity at Mississippi State University where he is a student.

1977:

- The unofficial City Election Returns in May, 1977 are: For Mayor: Gladstone B. Mortimer, 443; S. L. Reed, 283; For Aldermen: Suliman Abraham, 340; Dan Bell, 599; Richie Bryan, 505; George A. Chisolm, 464; W. Lamar Griffin, 446; Jack Peden, 529; Tom Turner, Jr., 571.
- Nancy McNeil, daughter of Mrs. Edward Nelms of Isola, has received her 1st promotion in the U.S. Air Force. She recently completed technical training at Lowry AFB, CO and is now assigned at Keesler AFB, MS.
- Elizabeth Sample Allen of Belzoni has made the President’s List at University of Southern Mississippi for the winter quarter.
- Shirley Williams of Belzoni won $100.00 for playing Darts for Dollars at the local Sunflower Store.
- Audrey Beckwith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beckwith, and Dale Lloyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Lloyd, have both been awarded scholarships from the Belzoni Lions Club.
- Parker Blake Higdon, Jr. of Friendswood, TX visited with friends and relatives in Belzoni over the weekend.
- Mr. and Mrs. Joe Goldberg have returned from Dallas, TX where they have spent several days at market.
- Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Bryan and children of Jackson, MS were weekend visitors in the home of his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Bryan.
- Mr. and Mrs. Otis Turner of Midnight were honored on May 28, 1977 for their Golden Wedding Anniversary in Memphis by their children, Mrs. Ora Lee Williams, Mrs. Frederick Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Turner and Mr. and Mrs. Clem Turner.
- Mrs. Johnnie Carroll and daughter, T. K., along with Jamie Kidd, were visitors in the home of Katie Jo Wooten and Barbara Turner for a week. Mrs. Carroll is the former Johnnie Lee Brown of Belzoni.
- The Summer Migrant pupils of Humphreys County Elementary School, along with some of their teachers, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. J. Purvis, Mr. Leroy Gregg, and the program director, Mrs. Cooper, visited the WELZ broadcasting station on June 3, 1977. They were given a warm reception by Mr. Herb Guthrie who also served as a resource person in Language Arts on June 3.
- Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Doyle of Los Angeles, CA left Wednesday after a week visit with his family here.
- Lillian and O. J. Turner recently enjoyed an 8-day visit in Mexico.
- Martha Nell, Tab Turner and Betty and Leon Parker attended the ballgame in Kansas City last weekend.
- Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Spruill has returned after a 2 week western trip with Mr. and Mrs. James Osborn.
- Mr. and Mrs. W. C. (Buddy) Chapman celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary on September 5, 1977 in Sumrall, MS.

1984:

- More than 500 librarians, friends, and state legislators from across the state attended the annual National Library Week workshop and luncheon held recently in Jackson. Those from Belzoni attending were Mrs. Gladys Abel, Mrs. B. H. Rodgers, Representative David Halbrook, and Senator Ollie Mohamed.
- Second Lt. Marcus W. Jones, son of Romey D. and Marilyn J. Jones of Belzoni, has graduated from the U. S. Air Force Pilot Training and has received his Silver Wings at Reese Air Force Base, Texas.
- On April 27, 1984, Belzoni Police Officer Mickey Foxworth, son of Mrs. Grace Foxworth, graduated from the 8-week Basic Law Enforcement Officers Training Course at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy at Pearl, MS.
- Mrs. Gus Mohamed and twin sons, Christopher and Blake, 10 weeks old, of Coco Beach, FL, spent several days with the Buddy Mohamed’s last week.
- Joy and Jimmy Fulcher have moved back to Belzoni and are living on Central Street. They have been in Jackson for the past 31 years and we are happy to have them back.
- Mrs. Ethel Wright Mohamed, local stitchery artist, returned to Belzoni on Monday, June 4th, after a week of exhibition of her work at the 1984 World’s Fair.
- Mrs. Josephine Watsula, Steve’s mother, of Washington, PA, Miss Patty Watsula and Mrs. Roni Simon, sisters of Steve, both of Toledo, OH, are visiting in the home of Steve.
- Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Garrard of Silver City are spending a few days in Magee, MS, with their daughter and family, the Henry Heriards.
- The Belzoni Garden Club welcomes three new members, Mrs. Jake Bellipanni, Mrs. James Sandifer, and Mrs. Dewey Wayne King.
- Mrs. Imogene Bearden, Mrs. Vicki Bearden, and Miss Ginger Hall have returned from an 8-day tour of Nova Scotia and other points in Canada.
- Dave, Charlotte, and Caryn Comans, and Judy Jones, have returned from a visit to Gulf Shores and Birmingham, AL, and Atlanta, GA.
- Mrs. Don Gorton has returned from a trip to Arkansas with her sister, Mrs. Mary Barringer of Marks, and Mrs. Barringer’s daughter and husband of Arkansas.
- Dr. Harriet Imrey of Champaign, IL, and son, Lee, visited her parents, the Moody Halls, last week. Harriet flew on to Houston, TX, for a medical meeting. Lee stayed for a short visit with his grandparents until Harriet’s return.
