GUIN, Ala. - Charlie Mann, 71, of Guin, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at his residence. He was the son of the late Larence and Bertha Pearce Mann. He had lived in the Pearidge community all of his life and retired from the 3M Company where he had worked 30 years. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Norwood Funeral Home Chapel in Guin with Bro. Bryan Spiller and Bro. Eric McKinney officiating. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jones Mann of Guin, Ala.; two daughters, Janet Nelson and Cindy Murray, both of Guin; two sons, Ricky Mann of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Randy man of Guin; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Lisa Mann; three brothers; and one sister.

PONTOTOC - Syblene Stegall, 86, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Woodland Baptist Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Bro. Fred Hartley officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Clara Nell Nix and her husband, Henry, of Pontotoc; one son, Lenard Stegall and his wife, Betty Jo, of Pontotoc; one sister, Verna Hamilton of Pontotoc; eight grandchildren, Pam Aston, Mike Bailey, David Stegall, John Stegall, Chris Bailey, Mitch Nix, Mark Bailey and Kim Chenault; 12 great-grandchildren, Kayla Aston, Tiffany Aston, James Aston, Zachary Stegall, Matt Bailey, Willie Bailey, Haley Chenault, Jessie Jaggers, Destiny Nix, Josh Graham, Jenna Bailey and Josh Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas "Tommy" Stegall; and a son, John Stegall. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. RIPLEY - Florence Ola Pearl Brady, 91, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Tippah County Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Chapman Church of Christ. She loved gardening and quilting and kept foster children in her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Daniel and Lillar Newby Stroupe; two daughters, Johnnie Pearl Hollingshead and Joyce Imogene Dains; two brothers; and two sisters. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapman Church of Christ with Minister Beale Coats, Minister J.A. Thornton and Minister Scott Brady officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. McMillan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Jo Elsie and Orman Bridges of Jumpertown, Janie Sue and Lloyd Hensley of Edmonton, Ky., and Senita and George Coats of Blackland; one son, Dexter Brady and his wife, Mary, of Blue Mountain; one sister, Johnnie Mae Carpenter and her husband, Fagin, of Ripley; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchldren; a host of nieces and nephews. Ruby Horner
WEST POINT - Ruby Marianna Menees Horner, 91, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Clay County Medical Center. She was born Jan. 3, 1912, in Clay County to the late Earlie Andrews and Printis Menees. She was a lifelong resident of Clay County and the former owner of Horner's Grocery Store. She was a graduate of Siloam Vocational High School. She was a charter member of the Prairie View Community Club and a member of the Prairie View Homemaker Club and Prairie View Quilters Club. She was the widow of Joseph "Joe" Woodson Horner, who preceded her in death Feb. 17, 1989. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Robinson Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with the Rev. Charles Dampeer officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jo Ann Horner Crane and her husband, Bobby, of West Point, and Carol Fay Horner Bowlin and her husband, Barney, of Sicily Island, La.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren Pallbearers will be James Calvin Bowlin, David Andrew Strobel, Jonathan Ryan Strobel, Travis Lynn Bowlin, Michael Lee Strobel and Christopher Dean Strobel. STARKVILLE - Jean Blue Taylor, 61, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at her home. She was a native of Quitman and had lived in Starkville for 32 years. She was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church where she was the first church pianist, first choir director as well as being active in the Women in the Church. A graduate of Mississippi University for Women and Mississippi State University, she taught piano for many years. She was an officer in the Mississippi Music Teachers Association and a member of the Junior Auxiliary. She enjoyed her family, friends and teach piano. She was very much loved by her family and the community. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Starkville with graveside services at 4 p.m. in the Oddfellows Cemetery in Quitman. Welch Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors inlcude her husband, Clayborne Dudley Taylor of Starkville; her mother, Allie Belle Blue of Starkville; two sons, Clayborne D. Taylor Jr. of Starkville, and David E. GLEN - Jimmie Lucille Smith, 69, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was a member of the Baptist church. She loved working in her yard. Flowers were her favorites outside as well as inside. Her favorite game was Spades, which she played with her children and grandchildren. She was a friend to everyone. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Moody and the Rev. Louie Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Artis High
ECRU - Artis High, 87, died Thursday, April 4, 2003, at Windam Nursing Home in Ecru. He was married to the late Eva Mae King High in 1939. They moved to Detroit, Mich., where he was employed by Chrysler Motors. After several years in Detroit, he was transferred to St. Louis, Mo. He spent the majority of his life in St. Louis and joined Mt. Gideon M.B. Church. He returned home to Ecru two years ago due to failing health. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cherry Creek M.B. Church with the Rev. Terry Baber officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Beasley Funeral Home of New Albany is in charge of the arrangements. Survivors include two sisters, Arteia High and Arbella Watt of Ecru; three sisters-in-law, Mamie High of Ecru and Eunice King and Hazel King of Beloit, Wisc.; three brothers-in-law, Hulon Barmore of St. Louis, Mo., Dewitt King of Beloit, Wisc., and Calvin King of Milwaukee, Wisc. FULTON - Benjamin E. "John" Wood, 81, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Jan. 9, 1922, in Golden to the late Adolphus and Virginia Collier Wood. He was a mechanic-welder and a member of the Jones Chapel Baptist Church in Nettleton. He was a veteran of World War II. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Senter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Payne and the Rev. Mike Tucker officiating. Burial will be in the Itawamba Memorial Garden Cemetery. He was a retired machinist and a member of the Tilden Church of Christ. WALNUT - Walter Clifford "Candyman" Jackson, 81, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his residence. He was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church and was the Alcorn County Agency Manager for Mississippi Farm Bureau for 43 years and the first "Million Dollar Producer" of Mississippi Farm Bureau Life Insurance. He was a member of the first Mississippi Farm Bureau Roundtable. He qualified and earned many Roundtable, All Star and Sportsman's Holiday Trips. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He attended the University of Louisville on the Navy V-12 program. He loved his garden and his log cabin, "Candyman's Castle", where he entertained his family and friends. He was so very proud of his children and grandchildren. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Harmony Baptist Church in Walnut with the Rev. Bryan Tatum and the Rev. Lyndel Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. IUKA - Brison Mann, 79, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his residence. He was a member of the Iuka Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a coach and teacher at Iuka High School for 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports and gardening. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Iuka Baptist Church with the Rev. He was born May 1, 1924, in Prentiss County to Hoze and Deller Whitehead Hutcheson. He was a farmer and a Baptist. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Booneville Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. James Wells and Bro. James Mooney officiating. Burial will be in Ingram Cemetery near Baldwyn. Survivors include a son, Boyce Hutcheson and wife, Carolyn, of Booneville; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. BECKER - Pearl V. Tate, 67, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at her home in Becker after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 23, 1935, in Tennessee to the late Riley and Nethie Strevel. She lived in Becker for 47 years. She was a retired production worker for Sharp Garment Co. and a member of Bethel Apostolic Church. She enjoyed word puzzles. She married Oliver Tate on Feb. 12, 1955, in Aberdeen. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home in Amory with the Rev. Coy Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Durrett Cemetery in Monroe County. SULLIGENT, Ala. - Virginia Stuckey Woods, 90, died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Winfield, Ala. She was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Lamar County, Ala., to the late J.H. and Alice Reeves Stuckey. She was a graduate of Sulligent High School and a homemaker. She was a member of the Sulligent First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and the Young at Hearts Group. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Otts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Sulligent City Cemetery. He was born Feb. 28, 1923, in Freemanville, Ala., to James Thomas and Arcola Singleton Luker. He had lived in Aberdeen since 1953. He was retired from Walker Manufacturing Company after 26 1/2 years of employment. He was a member of the Mennonite Christian Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Graveside services will be at the Luker Cemetery. Richard Luker will officiate at both. Arthur McCoy
IUKA - Arthur McCoy, 93, died Friday, April 4, 2003, in Boise, Idaho. He was born May 17, 1910, near Iuka to Samuel and Jennie McCoy. He moved to Melba, Idaho, in his early adulthood. There, he worked for the Jensen Sheep Ranch, eventually becoming foreman. Later, he worked at Honstead Motors in Nampa, Idaho, where he learned auto body repair. In 1946 he moved to Corinth and eventually owned an auto body repair shop. In 1957 he returned to Nampa, where he attended the First Baptist Church of Nampa. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and watching many sports. A memorial service will be today at the First Baptist Church in Nampa, Idaho. John Rather
HOLLY SPRINGS - John Edward Rather, 84, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto County in Southaven. He was born Aug. 26, 1918, in Memphis to Hugh H. Rather and Marie Butler Rather. He was a lifelong member and lay reader of Christ Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and taught Sunday school for many years. He served as an alderman for the City of Holly Springs for 32 years. He established the City Beautiful Commission and served as chairman for many years. He was chairman of the board and CEO of the First State Bank for more than 60 years. He served on the Board of Trustees at Rust College and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree. He was a charter member of the Industrial Development Authority for Marshall County. He was a member of the Holly Springs Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was active in the Yocona Area Council of Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and the M Club. He was an avid Ole Miss fan and active alumnus until his death. He was named Marshall County's Man of the Year when he was 81 years old. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bruce McMillan officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. PRAIRIE - L.C. Pulliam, 45, died Thursday, April 3, 2003. He was born May 12, 1957. He was a furniture upholsterer and a member of Pleasant Plain M.B. Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Plain Missionary Baptist Church in Prairie with the Rev. Kevin Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Randle Cemetery. JACKSON - Vera M. Ellison, 86, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Lakeland Health Care Center. She was a native of Baldwyn and a resident of the Jackson area since the late 1940s. She was a graduate of Union University in Jackson, Tenn. She was a former teacher and coach in Guntown and Marietta, and a retired executive secretary for Lamar Life Insurance Company. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Madison. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland. Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, B.E. FULTON - Cratis O. Wood, 80, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at his home. He was born June 17, 1922, in Itawamba County to General Allen Wood and Sarah Alice Thornton Wood. He was a construction worker and an employee of American Motors for 23 years. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW. He was a Baptist. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Sara Riley
Sara Cornelia "Sissy" Riley, 80, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a long illness. She was a native of Lee County. During World War II she worked at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. After returning to Tupelo, she worked for Bell Telephone Company and later for J.C. Penney, retiring in 1983 after 25 years. She was an active member of the Tupelo Free Will Baptist Church until her health failed in 1992. She was a junior Sunday school class teacher for a number of years. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today in the Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Terry Pierce and the Rev. Cody Alley officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Ralph Riley of Tupelo; two sons, William Riley and wife, Charlotte, of Belden, and Johnny Riley and wife, Sharon, of Melton, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Riley Gwillim and husband, Tim, of Melton, Scott Riley and wife, Kelly, of Belden, Amanda Riley of Belden, and Patrick Riley of Destin, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Sara Gwillim and Riley Gwillim, both of Melton, Carter Riley and Meg Riley, both of Belden; a brother, Jerold Montgmery of Tupelo.
