Homer Lee Pitchford
Died: Tuesday, July 22, 2003
Age: 63

Homer Lee Pitchford, 63, of Chicago, Illinois with burial in Illinois. Pastor Rayford Grady officiated.

Mr. Pitchford was born August 22, 1939 to the union of the late Reed and Beulah Pitchford. At an early age he was a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher at Newport M.B. Church in Lexington. Homer married the late Ethel Lee Redmond and was blessed with two children. In 1994, Homer married Erma Jean Wells and two more sons were added. One son Darnell Wells preceded him in death.

Survivors include: his wife Erma Jean Pithford; three sons, Homer Pitch-ford, Jr., of IL, Darrick Well of IL and Homer Webster of WI; one daughter Aretha of IL; three brothers, Jeremiah Pitchford of IL, Herbert Pitchford of WI and Samuel Pitchford of MS; ten sisters, Evelyn Martin, Rosa Mae Pitch-ford and Elizabeth Pitchford, all of IL, Katie Mae Pitchford of Jackson, MS, Cora Roberson of IL, Arnelida of TN, Allean O. Cleveland of CA, Minnie Cook of CA, Dorothy P. Buchanan of MS and Ms. Elois Bracey of VA; and 5 grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Jeremiah Pitchford, Herbert Pitchford, Robert Pitchford, Jeremiah Pitchford, Jr., and Nathaniel Pitchford.

Honorary pallbearers were: Homer Pitchford, Jr., Homer Webster, Rommel Bailey, and Lavell Pitchford.

William James Travis
Died: Sunday, May 04, 2003
Age: 63

William James Travis, 63, of Lexington died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at his residence. Services were Saturday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Porter & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington. Rev. Cardell Mitchell officiated. Interment was in Waddell Cemetery in Lexington.

Mr. Travis was born August 3, 1939 in Holmes County to the late Rev. George W. and Nellie B. Travis. Also preceding him in death were a stepfather Jesse Boyd and sister Minnesota where he worked for the City of St. Paul until he retired and returned to Lexington in 1987. He was a member of Lebanon M.B. Church.

Survivors include: his children, Wesley Martin, Rayford Dixon, Vincent Kincade, Carrie Mack, Rachell Pratt, Alan Robinson, Jefferson (T.C.) Travis; two sisters, Zula Shelton and Elzena Wiley; and 3 grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Rayford Dixon, Ahanti Young, Randy Wiley, Alan Robinson, Jefferson Travis, and James Walden.

Honorary pallbearers were: Drake Wiley, George Shelton, George (Ricky) Wiley, Manuel Cockroft, Eric Brown, and Vincent Kincade.

Martha Lois Nelson James
Died: Saturday, May 03, 2003
Age: 93

Martha Lois Nelson James, 93, of Biloxi died Saturday, May 3, 2003 at her residence. Services were held at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington on Tuesday, May 6, at 2:00 p.m. with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington.

Mrs. James was born in Chattanooga, Mississippi Delta with her husband Walter Keirn James, to whom she was married for 68 years. For years she was active in the Methodist Church of Cruger and helped start the Sunday School program there in the 1940’s. Also in the 1940’s she initiated a school lunch program in Cruger. In the 1960’s she was active as a children’s Sunday School teacher in St. John’s Methodist Church in Green wood, MS.

She was an artist known statewide for her portraits and other paintings. Over her life she taught many art classes, sharing her talent with both children and adults.

Survivors include: two sons, Walter Keirn James, Jr. of Jackson and Alexander Leonard Nelson James of Caledonia; five daughters, Lois J. Burns of Blue Ridge, GA, Maude J. McWhorter of Biloxi, Nellie J. McPherson of Columbus, Martha Nelson James of Green sboro, Thompson was the daughter of the late O. W. Thompson of Jackson and Baxter Louisiana and James A. Rathell of Mena, Arkansas and two grandsons.
Active pallbearers were: Danny Barnett, Johnathan Sheppard, Jason Dew, Jimmy Dale Thomas, Paul Hager, and Claude “Bubber” Carnathan.
Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. Charles Campbell, Billy Zeigler, Mack Grantham, Mike Lammons, John Rayford Ellison, Sam Reynolds, and D.A. “Mac” McCrory.

Sarah Marie Hodges
Died: Thursday, April 24, 2003
Age: 89

Sarah Marie Hodges Wilson, 89, of Beverly Manhatten Health Care in Jackson died Thursday, April 24, 2003. Services were Saturday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Durant with burial in Mizpah Cemetery. Rev. Joe Reynolds officiated.
Mrs. Wilson was the daughter of Sam Francis Hodges and Annie Lloyd Cox. She was the lunchroom manager at Durant High School for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Durant where she taught in the pre-school Sunday School Dept. and was active in all church affairs.
Survivors include: two daughters, Anne Dorsett and Peggy Horne both of Jackson; two brothers, Nathan Hodges of Goodman and S.F. Hodges of Kentwood, LA; four grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandsons. Her husband, Howard Wilson, preceded Mrs. Wilson in death.
Pallbearers were: James Wesley Hodges, Wallace McDaniels, Bill Ballenger, Robert Martin, Jimmy Rawson, and Mark Allen.

Lamar Hermann
Died: Wednesday, April 23, 2003
Age: 56

Lamar Hermann, 56, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at the NC, and Bruce Emerson of Piscataway, NJ; and ten grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bruce Hill, Jack Hayes, Nicky Nichols, Brad McKay, James Carroll, and Billy Peacock.
Memorials may be made to the Confederate Memorial Building, Green wood Little Theater or Independent Methodist Church in Green wood.

Vera Earline McGuire
Died: Wednesday, January 08, 2003
Age: 70

Vera Earline McGuire of Houston, Texas. Services were Saturday, January 11 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with burial in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Holmes County. Rev. Billy Barron officiated.

Mrs. McGuire was the daughter of the late Arthur (Ott) Edwards and Maggie Savell Edwards. She was born in Holmes County and was a retired bookkeeper. She was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one son, Beau McGuire of Nashville, Texas and Cindy Macha of Rosenburg, Preston Edwards of Canton; one sister, Hellen Bellais of Long Beach; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Charles Edwards, William Edwards, James Edwards, Dickie Edwards, Steve Edwards, and Billy Edwards.

Dora F. McCrory
Died: Wednesday, January 08, 2003
Age: 94

Dora F. McCrory of Pickens, 94, a homemaker, died Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at UMC Hospital in Lexington. Services were Friday, January 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Breeland Funeral Home with burial in the Canton Cemetery.

Mrs. McCrory was a native of Attala County and had lived in Canton for sixty years before moving to Pickens a short time ago. She was the widow of Dewitt McCrory, and she was preceded in death by two sons, Willis Earl McCrory and William Dewitt McCrory.

Mrs. McCrory was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: daughters, Gladys Springer of Pickens, Lorean Warren of Brandon; 7 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Robert Earl Lewis
Died: Tuesday, January 07, 2003
Age: 64

Robert Earl Lewis, 64, a retired principal of Lexington Elementary School, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at home in Lexington. Services were Saturday, January 11 at Durant Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Green lawn Cemetery in Lexington.

Mr. Lewis was a native of Scooba. He moved to Lexington in 1964. He was born on April 28, 1938 to Mrs. Isabella Lewis, and the late Mr. Robert Lewis. He was a member of Asia Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, church clerk, and Sunday School teacher. He retired as principal from the Holmes County School District in May of 2001.

Survivors include: wife, Florine M. Lewis of Lexington; two sons, Demetrius E. Lewis of Lexington and Robert T. Lewis of Detroit, Georgia, Dominica L. Fleming of Lowell, Arkansas, Tuwanda Z. Williams of Flowood; mother, Isabella Lewis Clay of Scooba; brothers, Earnest Lewis of Meridian, Lonnie Lewis of Scooba; sisters, Callie Pollock of DeKalb, Martha Atkinson and Ethel Jones, both of Detroit, Michigan; and four grandchildren.

Mary Lee Hudson
Died: Sunday, January 05, 2003
Age: 78

Mary Lee Pickens Hudson, of Pickens, 78, a retired cashier died of respiratory failure Sunday, January 5, 2003, at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson. Services were Saturday, January 11 at Cypress Grove M.B. Church with burial in Anderson Cemetery. Century Hairston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
