Died: Saturday, April 24, 2004
Age: 62

Clinton Ladell Steed, Jr., 62, died April 24, 2004, at his home on Bee Lake in Thornton.

Services were Wednesday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at Stringer Family Chapel in Hazlehurst with burial in Crystal Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Steed had lived in Tchula for 30 years. He was retired from Hot Shot Express where he was a truck driver for over 30 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of Vietnam and served in the Air Force after the Vietnam War.

Survivors include: daughter, Teri Steed of Brandon; step-father, Melvin Slater of Byram; brothers, Billy L. Pitts of Crystal Springs and Robert N. Slater of Madison.

Martha Jean Montgomery
Died: Thursday, April 22, 2004
Age: 92

Martha Jean Montgomery of Hattiesburg (formerly of Pickens), 92, died Thursday, April 22, 2004 at Wesley Manor in Hattiesburg.

Graveside services were Saturday, April 24 at Mizpah Cemetery in Durant. Dr. Orland Burt officiated. Southern Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Montgomery was born in Durant on December 29, 1911 to Edwin Weston Anthony and Daisy Delitha Williams and she was a teacher.

Survivors include: two sons, Thomas “Tom” Montgomery of Hattiesburg, and Tony Montgomery of Jackson; two daughters, Byrd Montgomery Howie of Hattiesburg and Daisy Montgomery Braswell of Colleyville, Indiana and also attended the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY. He was a WW II Navy veteran. Past vice-president of the Delta Council and past president of Honey Island Gin. He was a member of Cruger Baptist Church. He was a retired owner operator of Archer Aviation and Acherietta Plantation. He was preceded in death by son, Barnes Archer III and brother, James Alsop and his parents, Barnes and Jennie (Black) Archer, Sr.

Survivors include: wife, Mary “Baby Jack” Davis Archer of Cruger; four daughters, Barbara Porter of Brookhaven, Wendy Phillips of Lakeland, TX, and Cleveland Robinson of Lexington; sisters, Vertilla Green wood of Sallis, Celaine Anthony of West, Bettie Ruth Green of Vaiden, and Dorothy Mae McClellan of Shreveport, IL; one brother, George L. McClellan of West; fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; and a niece who she raised, Amy L. Johnson of Lexing-ton.

James Pepper Tidwell
Died: Wednesday, June 04, 2003
Age: 92

James Pepper Tidwell, 92, of Lexington died Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Services were Friday, June 6, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Bro. Doug Applegate officiated.

Pep as he was known by family and friends was a World War II veteran. Pep owned and operated T & T Grocery in Lexington for fifty years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lexington.

Survivors include: wife, Ruth R. Tidwell of Lexington; one brother, Bob Tidwell of Hernando; and one sister, Doris Smith

Active pallbearers were: Marvin Sterling, John Henry Harris, Mark Smith, Robert Autry, Brad Cothran and Charlie Earl Redmond.

Honorary pallbearers were: Marvin Dixon, Dr. John Downer, and Noel White Malone.

Lee Anderson "Doc" Jones
Died: Tuesday, June 03, 2003
Age: 84

Lee Anderson “Doc” Jones, Sr., 84, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at his home in Brandon. Funeral services were Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Seneasha United Methodist Church in Goodman with burial in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jones was a native of Attala County and had lived in Brandon for the past six and a half years. He had retired in 1981 from the county and state as an employee of the USDA. During World War II, Mr. Jones was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the 2nd Marine Division Association. He was honored with a WWII American Defense Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, USMC Good Conduct Medal and a WW II Victory Medal. “Doc” had lived in several states. He was always an honor student in school and graduated form Georgia, Vickie Lancaster of Bentonia and Hope Nelson of Yazoo City; one step-son, Dennis Burrell of Bentonia; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; 9 step-grandchildren; and 4 step-great grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Jim Wolverton, Mitch Wolverton, Chase Wolverton, Zach Wolverton, Greg Donald, and Scott Britt.

Agustus G. Fisher
Died: Thursday, May 29, 2003
Age: 84

Agustus G. “A.G.” Fisher, 84, of West died Thursday, May 29 at University Nursing Home in Durant. Services were Saturday, May 31 at 11:00 a.m. at Ed Roberts Chapel of Remembrance in Winona. Brother Freddie Murdock officiated.

Mr. Fisher was a retired owner/operator of Fisher’s Grocery near West. He was a member of the Martin Grove Methodist Church.

Survivors include: wife, Claudine H. Fisher of West; five sons, Edsel Fisher and Jerry Fisher both of Lexington, Woodley Fisher, Sr., of Jackson, Raymond Fisher of Houston, Ohio and Joe Willie Fisher of Chicago, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Betty B. Liberto
Died: Tuesday, May 27, 2003
Age: 85

Services for Bettye B. Liberto, 85, of Tchula, will be held today (Thursday, May 29) at 11:00 a.m. at Stricklin-King Funeral Home chapel in Yazoo City with Rev. Mary Lou Tickle officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City with Stricklin-King in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Liberto, a native of Holmes County, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at her residence.

She is survived by one son, Vincent E. Liberto, Jr. of Ringgold, GA; one daughter, Rosemary Holloway of Mandeville, LA; one sister, Santa Easum of Mobile, AL; 2 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bettye Ann Liberto.

Mrs. Liberto was a retired Postmaster and member of Thornton Methodist Church.

Lewis Marvin Meeks
Died: Monday, May 26, 2003
Age: 77

Funeral services for Lewis Marvin Meeks, 77, of Lexington were held at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28 with Rev. Joe Hill officiating. Interment followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington with Southern Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Meeks, a retired mechanic, died May 26, 2003 at TX; one brother, Archie Meeks of Tupelo; one sister, Evelyn McBride of San Francisco, CA; 6 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Mr. Meeks served in WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He flew A-20, B-25, and B-29’s. He served as tail gunner on the B-29 Lady “Bee” Good with the 314 Bomb Wing.

After many years of estrangement, Mr. Meeks located and arranged a reunion for his crew members. The first reunion was held in Tulsa, OK in 1991 and every year since.

Pallbearers were Joe Martin, Ricky Griffith, Buddy Irby, David Kennedy, Jim Michael, and Eli Saxton. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Zeigler; Tommy Sykes; Tom Sherman; and surviving members of his flight crew – Gerald Caldwell, Bob Novy, Al Wilson, Hap Morrison, Walter Martin, and Ernest Harper.

Johnnie Louis Grantham
Died: Saturday, April 03, 2004
Age: 85

Johnnie Louis Grantham of Green wood, 85, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Green wood Leflore Hospital from heart failure. Services were Tuesday April 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Williams & Lord Chapel in Green wood with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Green wood. Dr. Wayne Kimbrough officiated.

Mrs. Grantham was born and raised in Holmes County. She attended school in McAdams. She moved to Clarksville, Illinois, 70, died March 29, 2004 at his residence in Chicago, Illinois, James worked for the American Can Company in Maywood, Illinois.

Survivors include: wife, Lorraine; one son, Kevin Glover of Chicago, Illinois; five brothers, J.W. Glover, Horace “Beanie” Glover, and Fred Glover, all of Durant, Richard Glover of Elgin, Tennessee; one sister, Rose B. Stewart of Columbus, Ohio; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
