Shirley Aldridge Hathcock
Died: Sunday, June 20, 2004
Age: 84

Shirley Aldridge Hathcock of Durant, 84, died Sunday, June 20, 2004 at University Hospital of Holmes County in Lexington.

Services were Wednesday, June 23 at 10 a.m. at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Durant with burial in Brister Cemetery located between Durant and West. Rev. Joel Smith officiated.

Mrs. Hathcock was born August 29, 1919 in Holmes County to the late Leon Aldridge and Willie Mae Holmes Aldridge. She was a dietician for the Durant District II Hospital and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, H.T. Hathcock and son, David Hathcock. Mr. and Mrs. Hathcock were the first couple to be married at the Mt. Vermon Baptist Church. The couple was married for 63 years before Mr. Hathcock passed away.

Survivors include: four sons, Jimmy Hathcock and Buddy Hathcock, both of Lexington, Billy Hathcock and George Hathcock, both of Durant; one daughter, Mary Jane Allen of Lexington; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Ricky Hathcock, Matt Hathcock, Chad Allen, Chris Allen, Richard Chisolm, Aaron Steverson, John McCleskey, and Terry Wynne.

Honorary pallbearers were: Danny Tate, Tanner Tate, Danny McBride, Daniel McBride, Cassy McBride, Matt McLemore, Shannon McLemore, and Jason Calihan.

Jessie Ree Randle
Died: Friday, June 11, 2004
Age: 66

Jessie Ree Randle of Detroit, Michigan, 66, died Friday, June 11, 2004.

Services were Sunday, June 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Poplar Springs CME Church in Lexington. Bishop Sandy Dixon, Jr., Ph.D., pastor of Faith Temple Full Gospel Church in Detroit, Michigan, officiated. Porter and Sons Funeral Home of Lexington was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Randle was born on October 27, 1937 to the late Jessie and Martha Wade in Lexington. She received her early education in Holmes County Public Schools graduating from Mount Olive Vocational High School in Lexington in 1956. After graduating from high school, she moved to Detroit. She continued her education and graduated from Po Roe Beauty School.

Mrs. Randle was employed by Chrysler but later left to support her husband in the dry cleaning business. Eventually she opened her own beauty salon where she and her girls spent years working together. She was a member of The Faith Temple Full Gospel Church. She and her husband organized the Pastor's Aid Society at Faith Temple.

Survivors include: her husband, Rev. Ozell Randle, Sr.; eight children, Beverly Randle, Lynette Swayne, Vera, Orzella, Ozell Randle, Jr., Zachery Randle, Michael Randle, and Roderick; four sisters and three brothers, Elnora Kimbrough, Mattie Johnson, Jannie Coley, Andora Campbell, Maurice Wade, Micheal Wade, and Henry Wade.

Pallbearers were: Zachary Randle, Timothy Peoples, Deangelo Benison, Michael Randle, Jr., Brandon Johnson, and Jason Johnson.

Sherika Renee' Williams
Died: Friday, June 11, 2004
Age: 26

Sherika Renee' Williams of Lexington, 26, died Friday, June 11, 2004.

Services were Friday, June 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Galilee Treadwell Grove United Methodist Church in Lexington. Pastor Haywood Hannah officiated.

Sherika Renee' Williams was born to the late Porter K. Brown and Sallie Ann Williams. She graduated from Jacob J. McClain High in 1996 and continued her education at Holmes Community College in Goodman where she graduated in May 2004. She was a member of Galilee United Methodist Church and a member of the Holmes County East Charge Choir.

Her father, Porter K. Brown and Brother Robert Williams preceded her in death.

Survivors include: her mother, Sallie Ann Williams; eleven brothers, Oliver Williams, of West, Leroy Hill, Otis Hill and Lee Porter Hill, all of Lexington, Johnny Williams and Van Williams, both of Goodman, James Williams of Sallis, Porter Brown, Jr. of Pickens, Charlie Brown, Jessie Brown and James Brown, all of Ebenezer; seven sisters, Lillie Williams of Forest, Catherine Bruce of Durant, Bobbie Williams of Lexington, Gladys Williams of Goodman, Carol Brown of Pickens, Florestine and Doristeen Brown, both of Ebenezer.

Active pallbearers were the friends of the family.

Honorary pallbearers were: Oliver Williams, James Williams, Johnny Williams, Porter Brown, Jr., Ernest Bruce and Van Williams.

Maggie Bailey
Died: Friday, June 11, 2004
Age: 63

Maggie Bailey of Durant, 63, a homemaker, died Friday, June 11, 2004.

Services were Friday, June 18 at 2 p.m. at Belmount Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Belmount Cemetery. Century-Hairston Funeral Home of Lexington handled the arrangements.

James E. Kellum, Jr.
Died: Sunday, June 06, 2004
Age: 84

James E. Kellum, Jr. of Lexington, 84, a retired business owner, died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at River Regional Medial Center in Vicksburg.

Graveside services were Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. in Sallis Cemetery with Rev. Joel Smith officiating.

J.E. was born October 27, 1919 in Sturgis to Everett and Rose Malone Kellum. He served in the U.S. Army's Rainbow Division during World War II, from Normandy to Germany and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge among other medals. He owned a small engine repair business in Lexington for many years, and retired in 1984. He loved hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Survivors include: his wife of 46 years, Bessie Ruth; daughters, Rose Spell of Florence, Odessa Pepper and Carolyn Pepper, both of Lexington; son, Johnny Allen of Lexington; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mable Bardenhagen of Lexington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital, c/o The Division of Public Affairs, University Medical Center, 2500 North State St., Jackson, MS 39218.

L. M. Claiborne

L.M. Claiborne, Sr. of Tchula, 78, a farmer died Friday, June 5, 2004 at University Hospital in Lexington.

Services were held Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church with burial in West Shady Grove in Lexington. Century Hairston Funeral Home of Lexington was in charge of arrangements.

L.M. Claiborne

Age: 78

L. M. Claiborne, 78, a farmer of Tchula, died Saturday, June 5, 2004 at University Hospital & Clinics Lexington of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 12 at Rose Hill Baptist Church with burial in West Shady Grove Cemetery. Century Hairston Funeral Home is handing the arrangements.

William "Bill" Gray Garrison
Died: Thursday, June 03, 2004
Age: 68

Rev. William "Bill" Gray Garrison of Etta, 68, died Thursday, June 3, 2004 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Services were Saturday, June 5 at Chapel-United Funeral Service at 4:00 p.m. with burial in Macedonia Cemetery. Rev. Brian Gordon, Rev. Mike O'Brien, and Rev. David Rhea officiated.

Rev. Garrison was born November 30, 1935 in New Albany to the late James H. and Era Gray Garrison. He was a staff sergeant in the US Air Force. He was a graduate of Blue Mountain College and Emory Theological Seminary. He was a Methodist minister for 32 years serving in the following charges: Dumas, Eupora, Salem, Friendship, Union Hill, Glenfield, Bethlehem, Sledge, Potts Camp, Fulton, Okolona, and Lexington.

Survivors include: wife, Peggy E. Garrison of Etta (wife of 45 years); one daughter, Dianne Suga of Myrtle; one son, Steven Garrison of New Albany; and 3 grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were: Eddie Frazier, Clyde Hall, Milton Coffee, Chad Coffee, Johnny Knighton, and Troy Foreman.

Honorary pallbearers were Men of the Union Hill Methodist Church, Ministers of the Methodist Church, and Don Barrett.

Memorials may be made to The Lexington Foundation, Lexington, MS or the American Cancer Society.

William Preston "Bill" Thomas
Died: Wednesday, June 02, 2004
Age: 51

William Preston "Bill" Thomas of Greenwood, 51, farmer and businessman, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 as the result of an automobile accident in Sidon.

Services were Saturday, June 5, at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Greenwood with Rev. Cal Calhoun officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood.

Mr. Thomas was a graduate of Baylor High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the University of Mississippi and Mississippi College School of Law. He was a member of Ole Miss Tennis Team and M Club. He was also a member of Episcopal Church of the Nativity where he served on the finance committee and was a Vestry Member. He operated the family farm known as Egypt Plantation. He served on several boards including: Staplcotn Corp., Delta Council, Cotton, Inc., Farmers Supply Coop., Planters Band and Trust, and the Endowment Board of Pillow Academy. He was former Chairman of Natural Resources Conservation Services and former board member of the Greenwood County Club. He was a former Farmer of the Year in Greenwood. He was a member of Beulah Island Hunting Club and Delta Wildlife and Forestry. He was very interested in Community Affairs and was very concerned about the community and its future. He was a pilot and enjoyed tennis. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James Talbert Thomas, III and Betty Jane Thomas.

Survivors include: wife, Jane Carter Thomas of Greenwood; daughter, Ann Carter Thomas of Greenwood; son, William Preston Thomas, Jr. of Greenwood; two brothers, James Talbert Thomas, IV of Jackson and Sanford Cole Thomas of Oxford.

Pallbearers were: Bobby Carson, Peyton Self, Chris Marley, Bubba Nause, David Branham, Craig Brown, Meredith Allen, Ganes Clements, Billy Carter, and Robert Hardeman, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were: Karlis Gercens, Valdis Gercens, Janis Gercens, and Sammie Epps.

Memorials may be made to Pillow Academy or Episcopal Church of the Nativity Scholarship Fund.

Joesph E Smith
Died: Saturday, May 15, 2004
Age: 84

Funeral services for Joseph E. Smith, 84, of Lexington were held Saturday, May 15, 2004 at 12:00 noon at the Deborah Mason Patterson Hall on Saints Campus in Lexington. Elder Jonathan Safford officiated.

Deacon Smith departed this life on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born on March 26, 1920, the seventh of eight children of the late Rev. William E. Smith and Mrs. Madora Reeves Smith. Five brothers, Hosey, Otha, William E., Willis, and Norah Smith and two sisters, Maggie Smith-Buchanan and Roberta Smith-Haynes preceded him in death.

He was the architect of Southside M.B. Church where he served on the Deacon Board. He later joined Sweet Home M.B. Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher until his health began to fail.

He attended Ambrose High School and did further studies at the University of Illinois. Being a gifted carpenter/contractor, he taught woodwork and shop at Manpower in Greenwood and Saints College in Lexington. He is fortunate to have some of his work on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

As an avid Civil Rights leader, he was deeply involved in the United League of Holmes County, which he organized. He was also a member of the Equal Rights Congress (ERC) and Freedom Democratic Party (FDP) in which he traveled extensively working to promote equality for all people.

Survivors include: wife, Coretha Booker Smith; five daughters, Patricia Smith-Powell, Linda Smith-Cooper, and Joetta Smith-Edwards, all of Jackson, Jacqueline Smith-Wilson of Lexington, and Jo Ann Granderson of Los Angeles, California; one son, Clarence A. Smith of Los Angeles, California; and 12 grandchildren.

James Wayne Douglas
Died: Saturday, May 15, 2004
Age: 57

James Wayne Douglas, 57, of Durant, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his home after a battle with lung cancer.

Services were held Monday, May 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home in Durant with burial in Old Wheeling Cemetery in West.

Mr. Douglas was born in Zama to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Wayne Douglas on August 26, 1946. He attended Kosciusko High School and decided in 2001 to obtain his GED. He married Shirley Ann O’Briant Douglas in 1966. They were married 25 years and had three children. He served in the Mississippi Army National Guard for six years and was honorably discharged in 1969.

In the 1970’s and early 1980’s Mr. Douglas worked in broadcasting. He started his broadcasting career as an announcer at WKOZ Radio in Kosciusko. He was a news anchor for WABG in Greenville and later worked as an advertising manager and announcer of WONA Radio in Winona. In the 1980’s he was an employee of Fleetwood Homes of Lexington, working in the capacity of foreman and independent contractor. He was named Contractor of the Year in 1996. He did independent contracting for himself until becoming disabled in 2003. Mr. Douglas was a member of Parkway Baptist Church.

Mr. Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Wayne Douglas in 1984 and his wife, Shirley Douglas in 1992.

Survivors include: three daughters, Kelli Douglas Blaylock of Kosciusko, Cassie Douglas Allen of Sallis, and Ann Douglas Self of Gluckstadt; his mother Nona Douglas of Kosciusko; a brother, Joe Ray Douglas of Kosciusko; and 3 grandchildren.
