JoAnn Sanders Jenkins

JoAnn Sanders Jenkins of Clinton, 37, died Sept. 19 at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Services were Sept. 25 at Dean Memorial Funeral Home in Brandon with burial in Dean "Paradise" Gardens Cemetery.

Edwin Clayton Williams Jr.

Edwin Clayton Williams Jr. of New Orleans, 43, died Sept. 22 at his home.

Service were Sept. 25 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Raymond with burial in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Learned.

Mr. Williams grew up in the Learned area. He graduated from Rebul Academy and Hinds Community College. He was employed as a computer graphic artist by Harvey Press in New Orleans, La.

He was a grateful member of AA for 10 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Clayton Lewis, Sr.

Survivors include his son, Mississippi. Mark Seepe Funeral Home & Crematorium of Jackson handled arrangements.

Mrs. Scruggs was born in Colo., and Hilton, Okla., and later lived all over the southeast and in Lubbock and El Paso, Texas Tech University, and was a successful businesswoman in El Paso, where she operated Alice Scruggs Hearing Aids from 1973-88, and was a member of the Pilot Club and the Business & Professional Women Club.

She was a governor-appointee to the Texas; granddaughters, Emily Elizabeth Hartfield, Sarah Naomi Long and Ellen Alice Long; and her great-aunt Ruth Atteberry of Gulf Shores, Ala.

Memorials may be made to the Mississippi College in Clinton. He attended medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans, La., where he graduated in 1946.

He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served a tour of duty in Korea and Japan and was discharged in 1950. After four years of surgical training, he went to Columbus in 1954. He performed general surgery in Columbus from 1955-92 and after retirement worked in various emergency rooms. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Lewis Fellowship Sunday school class.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florra Gene Webb Thomas, who passed away Sept. 24, 2002; and by his twin brother, Shelton Minor Thomas Jr.

Survivors include sons, Elton Sigrest Thomas Jr. and wife Nell, Keith Eugene Thomas and Robert Craig Thomas, all of Columbus; three grandchildren, Michelle Thomas Edwards and husband Jack of Ridgeland, Elton Sigrest Thomas III and wife Nicole of Columbus and William Hunter Thomas of Columbus; two great-grandsons, Webb David Edwards and William McAllister Edwards, both of Ridgeland; niece, Ellen Thomas Aregood and husband Mike of Madison; and nephew, Shelton Minor Thomas III and wife Debbie of Clinton.

Pallbearers were F.B. Wiygul, Tom Wolford, Jake Propst, Charles Youngblood, Shelton M. Thomas III, Jim Buchan, Elton S. Thomas III and William Hunter Thomas.

Honorary pallbearers were Jim Ford, Thomas Moore, W.V. West, Dr. Billy Sullivan, Hayward James, Otis Garrard, Dr. Bob Low, Ted Harden, Raymond Hoskins, Dr. Doyle Sumrall, Dr. Tom Braddock, Lewis Fellowship Sunday school class at First United Methodist Church, doctors and nurses with whom he worked and the staff of Medical Arts Pharmacy, Dr. Allen Williams, Dr. Joe Berry Kelly, Dr. Charles Dalke, Dr. Mark Ellis and Dr. Jack Whitecar.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 32, Columbus, Miss. 39703.

Violet A. Plunkett

Violet A. Plunkett of Kosciusko, 85, a retired teacher, died Sept. 29 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko.

Services were Oct. 1 at Williamsville Baptist Church near Kosciusko with burial in Parkway Cemetery. The Revs. Joe Blackwell, Jerry East and Barry Corbet officiated, with Culpepper Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Mrs. Plunkett was born Nov. 30, 1918, to Robert Allen and Evie Miller in Leake County. She taught at schools in Sallis, Long Creek and several other schools, retiring after 36 years.

She was a member of Williamsville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, she was a RSVP volunteer at the visitor center, an avid reader and she loved birds and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, J.D. Plunkett, who died on May 2, 1978.

Survivors include: sons, Hugh Plunkett of Clarksdale, Robert Plunkett of Ripley; daughters, Betty Plunkett of Clinton, Terri Huey of Brookhaven, Suzanne Ables of Kosciusko; brother, Hubert Allen of Shreveport, La.; sister, Doris Lovett of Ridgeland; grandchildren, Emily Huey, Ben Huey and wife Alyson, Joey Plunkett, Jayne Plunkett, Aimee Plunkett, Bethany Plunkett, Corey Ables and Kristen Ables; and great-grandchild, Brayden Jenkins.

Memorials may be made to Williamsville Baptist Church, Mission Projects, 16995 Williamsville Road, Kosciusko, Miss. 39090.

Eileen P. Arbuthnot

Eileen Marie Packard Arbuthnot (Robertson) of Clinton, 91, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 1 at The Orchard in Ridgeland.

Services were Oct. 4 at Lakewood Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Ralph Endsley Jr.

Mrs. Arbuthnot, the daughter of Ethel and Ivan Packard, was born February 7, 1913, in Bates, Ark. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Clinton, where she taught Sunday school for many years.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served as an officer of the Mississippi Art Museum.

Hobbies included sewing, crafts and gardening. Her favorite charities included the Writing/Prayer Ministry of the First Baptist Church of Clinton and the Alzheimers Foundation. The family encourages donations in lieu of flowers.

Husbands Guy Arbuthnot and Isaac Robertson;daughter, Gloria Copland; and sister, Edna Guyton, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, Lane Arbuthnot of Orlando and Peter Arbuthnot of Jackson; brother, Ivan Packard of Shreveport, La.; and a sister, Roslyn Endsley of Monroe, La. Surviving grandchildren include Gay Arbuthnot of Las Vegas, Becky McGregor of Orlando, Debbie Makaena of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and John Arbuthnot, Sarah Scarbrough and Guy Copland, all of Clinton. Ten great-grandchildren, Victoria Copland, Guy Henry Farmer and Scott Farmer of Fairfax, Amanda Korgenski and Jeremy Korgenski and Randy McGregor of Orlando, and Shawn Makaena and Kai Makaena of Manhattan Beach survive her.

Wilma Passons Wigley

Wilma Passons Wigley of Clinton, 76, died Oct. 2 at Mississippi State College in 1949, playing football with the Maroons during his college career. Before retiring in 1992, Mr. Campbell was employed for 40 years as a senior adjustor with General Adjustment Bureau, handling catastrophic and major claims throughout the southeastern United States.

Prior to moving to Amite County in 1999, Mr. Campbell and family lived in Gulfport. He was a member of Berwick Baptist Church and a former member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church where he was a deacon at both churches.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Nita Campbell; his sister, Sue Campbell Knight of Columbia; and his brother, Will H. Campbell Jr. of Columbia.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Jo M. Campbell; three children and their spouses, James and Mary Jo Carson of Gloster, William and Barbara Campbell of Clinton, and Allen and Suzanne Shelton of Decatur, Ala.; adopted daughter, Nancy Freeman of Long Beach; six grandchildren, Ed and Rama Carson of Abilene, Mississippi Baptist Children's Village or the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Services were Nov. 22 at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram.

A native of Neshoba County, Mrs. Smith had recently moved to Clinton, returning to California. She had retired from MAI Basic Four in Irvine, Woods of Jackson, Mary Shute of Portland, Ore., Martha Hobby of Russelville, Ark., and Joyce Breazeale of Philadelphia; and a a granddaughter, Lace N. Hogan of Raymond.

Bettye 'Sue' James

On Nov.12 a special angel, Bettye "Sue" James of Florence, joined her Heavenly Father.

Funeral services were Nov.18 at First Baptist Church of Florence with burial in James Family Cemetery. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson handled arrangements.

Sue graduated from Clinton High School in 1973 and earned a bachelor's degree in special education from the University of Southern Colo.; one brother-in-law, Davey Gene Cook of Florence. Especially beloved by Sue are her four nieces, Sarah Hillary Cook of Florence, Laura Lang of Aurora, Colo., and Brianne Griggs of Riverside, Mississippi Special Olympics, 15 County Bard Road, Madison, Miss. 39110.
