William 'Alex' Burnwatt
Died: Thursday, August 02, 2001

Nine-year-old William "Alex" Burnwatt of Clarksdale, Miss., son of Charles and Debra Burnwatt, died Thursday, August 2, 2001, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, following complications from surgery.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 5 at National Funeral Home, with burial in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The Rev. Edd Lawrence and the Rev. Hugh Plunkett officiated at the services.

Alex was a student at Heidelberg Elementary School in Clarskdale, where he was about to begin third grade. He was a Baptist.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Jessica Burnwattl; a brother, Jonathan Burnwatt; his grandparents Beverly and David Still of Coahoma; his great-grandparents Stella and Noland Rowe of Askew, Miss.; and great-great-grandfather Edgar Rowe of Tunica.

Contributions may be made to a fund for the Burnwatt family established at Union Planters Bank in Clarksdale.

S.E. 'Smash' Gelvin
Died: Monday, July 30, 2001

Smash (S.E.) Gelvin, 88, of Gulfport, Miss., died at home Monday, July 30, 2001. He was a native of Parkin, Ark., and had lived in Gulfport for the past 20 years. He was a Baptist, a Gideon, and a retired real estate broker. Along with his wife Martha, he established the first Parkinson support group for the Gulf Coast area.

Survivors include his wife Martha George Few Gelvin; a son, Steven Eugene Gelvin of Tunica, Miss.; a daughter, Martha Karen Gelvin Bridges of Biloxi, Miss.; and four grandsons, Micah Bridges, Jesse Bridges, Caleb Bridges, and Reuben Bridges, all of Biloxi.

Services were held at South Carolina, Tommy Boren of Walls, Floyd Robertson of Lake Cormorant, Mike Montgomery of Pontotoc, Jamie Payne of Hernando, Miss., and Jimmie James of Walls. Honorary pallbearers were Tutt Sullivan, Ben Matthews, and John E. Matthews, all of Tunica, Claude Hardin of Pontotoc, and Jessie Easley of Hernando.

The family requests that any memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mrs. Ida Baker Cox
Died: Monday, July 23, 2001

Mrs. Ida Baker Cox, 88, of Coldwater, Miss., formerly of Memphis, Tenn., died Monday, July 23, 2001 at North Oak Hospital in Senatobia, Miss.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 27 at Forest Hill Midtown Funeral Home in Memphis, with burial in Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery. Dr. John Mahony officiated at the services.

Mrs. Cox was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Independence, Miss. and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was born January 10, 1913 near Pine Bluff, Ark., the daughter of Nazareno and Della Brunetti Baldi. She enjoyed fishing.

Mrs. Cox, the widow of the late John V. Baker, is survived by her husband Louis Cox; two daughters, Marie James and Betty Shelton, both of Coldwater; one step-daughter, Iris Mayfield of Anderson, Mississippi Delta junior high and high schools and Northwest Junior College. She was active in church and civic activities where she moved. Most recently, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Biloxi, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Dorrell W. Ryker; one daughter, Emma Lou Miles; and two grandchildren.

The family requests that any memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, Biloxi, building program.

Billy Joe "Pork Chop" Anderson
Died: Friday, July 06, 2001

Services for Billy Joe Anderson, 67, known locally as "Pork Chop," were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2001 at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Bud Lane officiated at the services.

Anderson, formerly of Tunica, died July 6 at the Helena Regional Medical Center in Helena, Ark. Born May 19, 1934, in Braden, Tenn., he was a former service station attendant. In recent years, he had made his home in the Crest Park Nursing Facility in Helena.

Anderson is survived by one sister, Mary Wickham of Batesville, Miss. and one brother, Morris Anderson of Laurel, Miss.

Pallbearers were Frankie Sullivan, Joel Anderson, Jimmy Ivy, Gerald Clark, Richard Veazey, and Jesse Powell.

The family requests that any memorial be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mrs. Katherine Reed
Died: Thursday, June 21, 2001

Services for Mrs. Katherine Reed, 81, of Tunica will be held at noon on June 30, 2001 at Lane Chapel Church in Tunica, with burial in Shady Grove Cemetery. Rev. Bobby G. Wilson and Rev. James Johnson will officiate and Henderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Reed, a homemaker, died June 21 at home. She was born in Tunica on December 18, 1919 to the late Mose Hunt and Michigan, and James Hill III of Tunica; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Claude Reed.

The family requests that any memorials be made to Lane Chapel Church.

James E. Daughdrill
Died: Tuesday, June 05, 2001

James E. Daughdrill

Services for James E. Daughdrill, 74, of Tunica were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Tunica, with burial in Trinity Cemetery in Eudora, Miss. Rev. Danny Smith officiated at the services.

Mr. Daughdrill, retired from Entergy, died June 5 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Mr. Daughdrill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Katherine R. Daughdrill; his mother, Mrs. Alma Roberts of McComb, Miss.; a son, Hugh Thomas of Hernando, Miss.; two daughters, Jeanie D. Coalburn of Tunica and Tricia D. Greer of Little Rock, Ark.; one brother, Wayne Daughdrill of McComb, Miss.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Daughdrill, Bill Daughdrill, Ruben Riley, Dennis Riley, Paul Leslie Riley and Henry Riley. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Harrison, Larry Sowell, Jack Nunnery and Wayne Riales.

Mrs. Mildred Griggs Hawkins
Died: Saturday, May 26, 2001

Graveside services for Mrs. Mildred Griggs Hawkins, 72, of Hernando, Miss., were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2001 atOakwood Cemetery in Tunica, with Rev. Doug Hardin officiating. Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hawkins, a retired nurse, died May 26 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven, Miss. She is survived by her husband, James E. Hawkins of Hernando; one daughter, Rita Hawkins Jones of Horn Lake; a sister, Lucille Griggs Gibson of Holly Springs, Miss.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Benny Flynn, Ray Griggs, George P. Perry, Dicky Flynn, Bill Griggs, John Barrett, Pat Hawkins, Stephen Gibson, Mel Dorris and Marty Dorris.

The family requests that any memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Jeanette Harris
Died: Wednesday, May 02, 2001

Services for Jeanette Harris, 38, of Tunica was held at 2 p.m. on May 6, 2001, at New Corinth MB Church in Tunica, with burial in Rainey Cemetery in Tunica. The Rev. Nathaniel Cusic officiated at the services.

Ms. Harris died May 2 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., after having been seriously injured in an automobile accident. She was a member of the Corinth MB Church, where she served as a faithful member and usher. She was employed at Bally's Casino.

Ms. Harris is survived by her mother Blanch Harris; two sisters, Josephine Adams and Curtistine Jones; four brothers, Marvin, Maurice, Maverick and Alvin Harris; two aunts, Elizabeth Beton, and Ethel Burton; two uncles, Adam Bonds and Will Burton; and a loving and devoted friend, Larry Williams.

Albert Tyler
Died: Sunday, April 29, 2001

Albert Tyler

Services for Albert Tyler, 83, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Tunica, were held at noon on May 5, 2001 at Union Street Church of Christ in Tunica, with burial at the Church of Christ Cemetery in Arkabutla, Miss. Bro. Sylvester Thomas officiated at the services.

Mr. Tyler, a retired janitor, died April 29 at Allenbrook Nursing Home in Memphis. The son of Selena Clayborn and Lexous Tyler, Sr., he was born in Maud, Miss. Mr. Tyler was a member of the Union Street Church of Christ and had served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by one son, Larry Thomas of Tunica: three grandchildren; two nieces, Bertha Hamp of Tunica and Cora Paige of Jackson, Michigan; a special great-nephew, Maurice Williams of Tunica; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lexous Tyler, Jr.
