CHEEK
Ida M. Handy Cheek, daughter of the late John and Viola Handy, was born January 10, 1915, departed this life March 9, 2006, making her stay on earth 91 years and two months. She was married to Cecil M. Cheek for 60 years. He preceded her in death. No children were born unto this union. Having lived in Maryland for a number of years, she joined Baptist View Church, Forest Hill, Maryland, in 1950 and remained a member until her death. Ida and her husband moved to Sparta, NC in 1974. Ida was a good friend and neighbor and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves special nieces and nephews, Clarence and Jean Rowland of Bel Air, Md., Vella Jo and David Cloyd of Florida and Gene and Opal Andrews of Galax, Va; a special friend and caregiver, Pat Wyatt of Sparta; and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 11th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta, NC. Rev. Clarence Rowland and Rev. Varan Walker will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.

FUSSELL
Mrs. Helen Nichols Fussell, age 90, of 267 Vestal Road, Sparta, died Tuesday morning, March 7, 2006, at her home. She was the widow of John Henry Fussell, Jr. She is survived by a special friend, Rita Woodruff and her husband John of Sparta; and her special caregivers, Joan Bell, Martha Rector, Opal Brinegar and Karen Wyatt, all of Sparta, Eula Faye Brown of Piney Creek and Wilma Finney of Glade Valley. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 11th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Oakdale cemetery in Wilmington, NC. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675 or the Alleghany County Educational Foundation, c/o John Woodruff, P.O. Box 151, Sparta, NC 28675. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the family.

TODD
Mr. Rex Carlie Todd, age 74, of 1583 Pleasant Home Road, Sparta, died Sunday morning, March 5, 2006, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Ilene Cox Todd of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Theresa Todd, Tommy and Vicky Todd, and Wayne and Linda Todd, all of Sparta; a sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Paul McMurray of Weber City, Va; two brothers and a sister-in-law, R.L. and Edna Todd of Baywood, Va., and Herbert Todd of Independence, Va.; five step-daughters, Brenda Roark and husband G.W. of Blanche, NC, Gail Reece of Sparta, Gloria Murray and husband Junior of Glade Valley, Jane Massey and husband Kevin of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Elizabeth Privette and husband Johnny of Stokesdale, NC; three step-sons, Gene Cox and wife Wanda of Galax, Va., Grover Cox, Jr. of Summerville, SC., and; Gerald Cox and wife Cathy of Galax, Va.; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 7th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Home cemetery near his home. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening (this evening) at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. SHEPHERD
Mr. Glenn H. Shepherd, age 89, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, died Sunday evening, April 30, 2006, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Royall Shepherd, and was preceded in death by a son, Hampton Bill Shepherd. He is survived by two daughters, Virginia Crouse of Sparta, and Frances Benge and husband Junior of Elkin; four grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 4th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Peak Creek cemetery at Laurel Springs with full Military rites by Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

NICHOLS
Mr. Herbert Ray Nichols, age 53, of 173 Saddle View Road, Ennice, died Friday morning, April 28, 2006, at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Richard Nichols. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Suitt Nichols of the home; a son, Jeffrey Ray Nichols of Low Gap; two daughters and a son-in-law, Wendy and Ronald Collins of Ennice, and Christy Nichols of Low Gap; his mother, Eva Rutherford Nichols of Sparta; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Bobby Maines of Glade Valley, and Sue and Chris Monk of Sparta; and two grandchildren, Kimberly and Nicholas Collins. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 30th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olivet cemetery in the Baywood, Virginia community. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.

BEDSAUL
Mr. Carl Dean Bedsaul, age 78, of 626 W. Kapp St., Dobson, NC, died Friday morning, April 28, 2006, at Elkin Healthcare in Elkin. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Bedsaul; and the mother of his children, Betty Handy Bedsaul Watson. Carl was born in Alleghany County on September 24, 1927, to the late Bradie Bedsaul and Laura Andrews. He is survived by three daughters, Linda Andrews of Peachtree City, Georgia, Ellen Gurganus of Clemmons, and Vickie Versluys of Peachtree City, Georgia; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Oddie Edwards of Sparta and Helen Smith of Elizabeth, West Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 30th, at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church cemetery near Sparta. Rev. Mitch Robertson will officiate. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will gather at the Glade Creek Church 30 minutes prior to the graveside service to greet friends and family. HAKANSON
Mr. Bruce William Hakanson, age 81, of 14261 NC Hwy 18S., Laurel Springs, died Sunday morning, April 23, 2006, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Bruce was born in Pittsburg, Pa. December 26, 1924. He retired as Director of Administrative Services for East Florida AAA. He is survived by his wife, Myrna E. Hakanson of Winter Haven, Florida; a step-son, W. Eric Shank of Lake Wales, Florida; two step-daughters, Tamara E. Gordon of Winter Haven, Florida, and Loriann E. Shank of Lake Wales, Florida; step-grandchildren Michelle Wilkes, Jennifer E. Gordon and Karsten Shank; and step-great-grandchildren Meghan and Garrett Jennings. At his request, Bruce will be cremated and his ashes buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Hakanson family.

PRESNELL
James Amos Presnell was born into this world May 21, 1912, and departed this life on April 23, 2006. He was the son of the late Elder A.L. and Anna Belle Presnell and the last surviving sibling from a family of 10 children. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Blevins Presnell Nunn (the mother of his six children); and by two grandchildren, Teresa Ann Presnell and William Shannon Binion. He is survived by his wife Peggy R. Presnell; five daughters, Betty Binion of Sparta, NC, Helen Jack of South Paris, Me., Wanda Powers of Marion, Va., Audie Lee Collins of Prince George, Va., and Brenda Smith of Mansfield, Oh.; one son, Kenneth Presnell of Saltville, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Marie Presnell of Sparta and Sally Presnell of Boone, NC; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and friends. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith, uniting with the Roaring River Primitive Baptist Church in Wilkes County, NC, on May 19, 1968. James “Amos”, a farmer of the land most of his life was an avid outdoorsman and a lover of nature. He was blessed by God even into his 90’s with the health and strength to persue the things that gave him much joy and satisfaction-hunting, fishing, trapping for fur bearing animals and gathering wild Ginseng. Of all these things, fishing for trout was his greatest joy. He astounded many people with his uncanny ability to catch trout with simple equipment in the most unlikely places. Catching native trout from the small streams that flow out of Bullhead Mountain was one of his favorite things to do for many years. I believe Dad, last Sunday afternoon, was able to identify with our Brother Paul the Apostle when he wrote in the Book of 2nd Timothy “ For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing. Funeral services for “Amos” will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 26th at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Sparta, NC. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. Elders Randy Carter and John Lyons will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Sparta, NC.

McCANN
Mrs. Gaye Edwards McCann, age 78, of 4136 Fox Ridge Road, Sparta, died Saturday evening, April 22, 2006, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of the late Dave and Virgie Hudson Edwards. She was the widow of Ford McCann and was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Bedsaul. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Moore of Mt. Airy, Brenda Washington of Sparta; a son, Charles McCann of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Michelle Bottoms of Ararat, Robert Washington of Middleton, Idaho, and Kristi Washington of Wilmington; two great grandchildren, Ashley and Austin Bottoms of Ararat; and one brother, D. Raye Edwards of Roanoke, Virginia. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 25th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Glade Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034, c/o Eldon Edwards, 1983 Chestnut Grove Church Road, Sparta, NC 28675. HOLBROOK
Mr. Colonel William Holbrook, age 89, of 3064 Air Bellows Gap Road, Sparta, died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Fernando and Lula Caudill Holbrook. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie C. Holbrook; his first wife, Mary W. Holbrook; three sisters, Bernice Hoover, Georgia Lou Holbrook and Blanche Brady; and one brother Rush Holbrook. He is survived by a step-daughter, Dorene C. Caudill of Sparta; three step-grandchildren, Chad Ham and Lynn Caudill of Sparta, Christy Klein of Huntersville; three step-great-grandchildren, Neicolah Klein, Jasey Ham and Lily Nilo; six nieces and nephews, Marilyn Jensen of Massachusetts, Georgia Lou Stickles, Susan Holbrook, Hope Holbrook and Peter Holbrook, all of New York, and Charles Holbrook of New Jersey; three sisters-in-law, Josephine E. Holbrook of New York, Annie Irene Profitt of Wilkesboro, and Erta Lee Jordan of Sparta; two special cousins, Allen Holbrook of Hays and Elvira Crouse of Sparta. Several cousins and many special friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 23rd, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial follow in the Double Creek cemetery in Wilkes County, with full military rites by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home. Mrs. Versie Ham Combs, age 89, of 336 Fender Mountain Road, Sparta, died Monday, April 17, 2006, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Ronnie Smith. She was the daughter of the late George and Nannie Edwards Ham. She was the widow of Marion Combs and was preceded in death by two sons, Arzie Clive and William Aldin Combs; five brothers, Albert, Vilace, Arvie, Lester and Cary Ham; and a great-grandson, Sammy Pruitt. Survivors other than Kay and Ronnie are her grandchildren and spouses, Kim and Burton Kennedy, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., Sharon and Carl Stovall of Sparta., Tim and Sherry Combs of Sparta, and Sheryll and Ray Thompson of Mt. Airy; her great-granchildren, Allison Lawrence, Amy Stovall, Darryll Stovall and Trevor Thompson; two sisters, Jettie Royal of Sparta and Lola Davis of Hays; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 19th, at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta and at other times at the home place.
