SOULES Mrs. Linda Ellen Soules, age 44, of 4661 Spicer Mtn. Road, Sparta, NC, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at her home. She is survived by her husband: George Soules of the home; two daughters: Jessica Soules and Kim Soules both of the home; one son: Mike Soules of the home; her mother: Lucille Cote of Monroe, Conn.; two sisters: Jane Hebert of Mass. And Susan Arribas of Conn.; and five brothers: Raymond Cote of Conn., Morris Cote of Arizona, Richard Cote of New York, and John Cote and Jim Cote both of Conn. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be conducted Wednesday, August 2, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the home. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is assisting the family.

JOHNSON Mr. Michael Thomas Johnson, better known as "Sam", age 19, of 1044 Golf Course Road, Sparta, N.C., died Saturday, July 29, 2000 from injuries received in an automobile accident. He is survived by his parents: Jimmy and Carol Johnson of the home; one sister: Sarah Johnson of the home; his maternal grandparents: Tom and Eva Parsons of Sparta; his paternal grandmother: Aleine Johnson of Galax, Va.; and his great-grandparents: Oddie Edwards of Sparta and Veatrice Parsons of North Wilkesboro, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

EVANS Mr. John Rex Evans, age 87, of 452 Little River Drive, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at his home. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Bob and Sandy Evans of Charlestown, Md.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Doris and Mike Novak of Ellicott City, Md., Elaine and Jim Sammons of Cape Coral, Fla. and Janie and Bill Miller of Hiddenite, NC; six grandchildren: Mike and Rob Vanek, Mark Grace, Heather Toth, Bryan and Boyd Evans; five great-grandchildren: Sharalyn, Amber, Chelsea, Alicyn and Colton; one step-grandchild: Trent Arledge; and one sister: Elsie Edwards of Sparta. He was preceded in death by his wife: Grace Evans, his parents: Millard snf Dora Richardson Evans, and four brothers: Ray, Gaither, Dillon and Dale Evans. A tribute and visitation will be held Friday evening, July 28, 2000, from 6-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Funeral Services will be conducted Monday, July 31, 2000, at 1:00 PM at the Evans Funeral Home in Forest Hill, Md. with Burial to follow in the Bel Air Memorial Gardens in Bel Air, Md. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 30, 2000, from 7-9 PM at the Evans Funeral Home in Forest Hill, Md.

SMITH Mr. Robert Kenneth Smith, age 56, of 2219 Mahogany Rock Road, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at his home. He is survived by his wife: Dany Smith of the home; one daughter and son-in-law: Missy and David Church of Roaring Gap, NC; two step-sons: Joel Rea of the home and Chris Rea of Stanley Town, Va.; one brother: Carroll Dean Smith of Columbus, Ga.; and a special Friend: Linda Smith. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, July 29, 2000, at 2 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Crab Creek Cemetery. Rev. Dean Adams will officiate. Military Rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. BROOKS Mr. Eugene Edwin Brooks, age 60, of 3457 Mtn. View Road, Glade Valley, NC, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at his home. He is survived by his wife: Dorothy Brown Brooks of the home; one daughter: Melissa Brooks of Sparta; one son and daughter-in-law: Jesse and Lenna Brooks of Glade Valley, NC; four grandchildren: Abbey Brooks and Casey Brooks, both of Glade Valley, NC, Hadley Brooks of Sparta, NC and Brandon Lundy of Wilmington, NC; one brother: John Dale Brooks of Ennice, NC; and one half-brother: Odis Brooks of Maryland. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial in the Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. HOOVER Mrs. Bernice Holbrook Hoover, age 93, of 3064 Air Bellows Gap Road, Sparta, NC, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the home of her brother, Colonel Holbrook at 39 Holbrook Way in Sparta, NC. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law: Colonel and Marie Holbrook of Sparta; one sister: Blanche Brady of Chatham, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at 4:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial to follow in the Double Creek Cemetery in Wilkes County. Rev. Ralph Smith, Elder Roy Houser will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta and at other times at the home of Colonel Holbrook, 39 Holbrook Way, Sparta, NC.

BARE Mr. Donald (Buddy) Bare, age 71, of 112 Rector Road, Ennice, NC, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his wife: Shirley Bare of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: Donald and Kathy Bare of Clintwood, Va; one grandchild: Chad Bare of Clintwood, Va.; his mother: Mrs. Raye Bare of Laurel Springs, NC; two brothers: Richard Bare of Baltimore, Md. and Jerry Bare of Laurel Springs, NC; and two sisters: Gloria Voss of Iowa and Jacqueline Atwood of Ennice, NC. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Bare Cemetery in Ashe County, NC. HUBER Mr. A. Anderson Huber of Ennice, NC passed away on Tuesday, July 18 in his home. He was surrounded by his immediate family. Mr. Huber was born February 7, 1930 in New York City to Walter Huber and Margaret Goss Huber. Mr. Huber graduated from Cornell University in 1954 with a degree in Agriculture after serving in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict. Prior to moving to Alleghany County in 1993, Mr. Huber was a banker while living in Atlanta. Andy was instrumental in the formation of Christ Church Episcopal and was involved in farming and local civic activities. He is survived by his wife, Frances Robinson Huber of the home; his daughter, Elizabeth Rhett Huber of Atlanta, Ga.; his son, A. Anderson Huber, Jr. of Darien, CT., along with his wife Pamela Polley Huber, sons, A. Anderson Huber, III and Wesley Baxter Huber, and daughter, Kathleen Frances Huber; his son, Edward Merritt Huber of Atlanta, Ga., along with his wife Jan Jenkins Huber and sons, John Merritt Huber and Edward Blake Huber; his daughter, Phred Huber of San Francisco, Ca; his son, Timothy Norman Huber of Atlanta, Ga. and his son, James Robinson Huber of Atlanta, Ga. The family will be receiving friends Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at their home at 1387 Big Oak Road, Ennice, NC. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 21 at the Sparta United Methodist Church with the Reverend Stanely McGraw officiating. A private distribution of ashes will follow at the family's home. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christ Church (Episcopal) Building Fund at PO Box 1866, Sparta, NC 28675 or The Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department at PO Box 39, Ennice, NC 28623. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home is assisting the Huber family.

SANDERS Mrs. Rose Fowltes Sanders, age 101, of 179 Combs Street, Sparta, NC, died Wednesday morning, July 19, 2000 at the Sunbridge Health Care Center in Sparta. She was the widow of Jeff Sanders. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law: June and Ted Heyn of Willis, Texas; three nieces: Elaine Rector of Sparta, NC, Reba Osborne of Piney Creek, NC and Wilma Manson of Asheville, NC; and two nephews: Terry and John Kennedy both of Sparta, NC. Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, July 22, 2000, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial to follow ihn the Shiloh Cemetery. The friends will receive friends one hour prior to the Funeral Services at the Funeral Home.

CHURCH Mr. James Paul Church, age 59, of 611 Grandview Drive, Sparta, NC, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife: Barbara Kennen Church of the Home; his mother: Verna Ferguson Church of Sparta, NC; a foster son and wife: Ronnie and Crystal Woodie of Glade Valley, NC; and a foster granddaughter: Amber Woodie of Glade Valley, NC. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2000, at 1:00 PM, at the Sparta First Baptist Church with the Dr. Jim Pollard officiating. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home, however, friends may call at the home at 611 Grandview Drive at any time.

PETTY Mrs. Lillian Petty, age 77, of 273 Independence Road, Sparta, NC, died Thursday evening, July 13, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. She is survived by Two daughters: Pat McMillan of Sparta, NC and Judith Horney of Statesville, NC; four sons: Frank Miller of High Point, NC, Wayne Miller of Laytonsville, Md., Hugh Miller of Laurel Springs, NC and Johnny Lovelace of Piney Creek, NC; and twelve grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday, July 16, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Miller and Rev. Jimmy Hopson officiating. Burial will follow in the Prathers Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, NC. Flowers will be appreciated or Memorial contributions may be made to the Alleghany County Council on Aging Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 416, Sparta, NC 28675.

BEDSAUL Mr. Robert Bruce Bedsaul, age 63, of Pine Ridge Apartments, Sparta, NC, died Thursday at his home. He is survived by one daughter: Deborah Kay Grimes of Fries, Va.; one step-daughter: Pamela Bourne of Ennice, NC; five grandsons: Eddie Bourne of Sparta, NC, Jesse Bourne of Ennice, NC, Domanick Grimes of Galax, Va., Jonathan Grimes and Aron Grimes both of Fries, Va.; three sisters: Barbara Alley, Dorothy Robinson and Faye Bailey all of Galax, Va.; five bothers: Lewis Bedsaul and John Bedsaul both of Galax, Va., Wade Bedsaul of Dixon, Missouri, Joseph (Tinker) Bedsaul of Kansas City, Missouri and Dewey Bedsaul of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service will be conucted Monday at 2:00 PM at the Martha Wilson Cemetery in Galax, Va. There will be no visitation at the Funeral Home; however, friends may call at the home of David and Pamela Bourne, 86 Oak Dale Road, Ennice, NC at any time.

BROWN Sally Colvard Bledsoe Brown, age 92, a native of Alleghany County, formely residing at 211 Choate Avenue, Sparta, North Carolina, died Thursday evening, July 13, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the last of the seven children born to Jesse Ransom and Dema Colvard Bledsoe. After graduating from Glade Valley High School in 1927 and becoming certified as a beautician, she pursued several vocations in related fields. Employed by the Wella Corporation, manufacturer of beauty parlor equipment and supplies in New York City, she was able to travel widely as a national representative . As such, she experienced adventures which for the 1930's were rare for a woman. Her travel series "Touring the Good Old U.S.A." published in the in the Alleghany Times, documented these experiences. Original poetry and paintings leave a legacy which mark her creative personality. She leaves a host of friends and relatives whose affectionate memories insure that this special life will be missed, but not forgotten. She is survived by several nieces and nephews: Mr. Jim Andrews, Mr. Joseph Andrews and Mr. Duke Bledsoe, Sparta, Mr. Sidney Bledsoe, Elkton, Md., Mr. Thomas Bledsoe, Newark, Del., Mr. Byron Bledsoe, Merietta, Ga., Mr. Baxter Bledsoe, Jonesboro, Tenn., Mrs. Robert Cogswell, Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Dewey Davidson, Winston-Salem, N.C. and Mrs. Rufus E. Lawrence, Tarboro, N.C. A graveside service will be held at Sparta Cemetery, Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Phillip Pogue officiating. Arrangements are by Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

WOLFE Miss Agnes Cornelia Wolfe, age 98, of 2416 Nile Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Tuesday morning, July 11, 2000, at her home. She is survived by a brother: Luther Wolfe of Martinsville, Va.; and a sister; Mary Wolfe. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the Funeral Home.

SHORES Mrs. Ethel Wagoner Shores, age 79, of Cartersville, Georgia, and formerly of Sparta, NC, died Friday evening, July 7, 2000, at the Emory Medical Center in Cartersville, Georgia. She was the widow of Levi Shores. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Judy and David Caudill of Woodstock, Georgia and Jane Stevens of Woodland Hills, California; four gGrandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters: Elsie Joines of Sparta, NC, Clyde Edwards of Aberdeen, Md. and Rose Richardson of Old Fort, NC; and one brother: Charles C. (C.J.) Wagoner of Mt. Airy, NC. She was preceded in death by a brother: Bert Wagoner. Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday morning, July 11, 2000, at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jess Higgins and Eld. Eugene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening, July 10, 2000, from 7-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Family and Friends will gather at the home of Dorcas Wagoner on Rivers Edge Road, Sparta, NC, following the Service.

MILES Mr. Fred Grady Miles, age 91, of 1188 Camp Cheerio Rd., Glade Valley, N.C., died Thursday afternoon, July 6, 2000, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Margie and Dwaine Andrews of Sparta, N.C., Peggy and Glyce Hinshaw of Boonville, N.C., Betty and John Toliver of Glade Valley; three sons and two daughters-in-law: Alfred and Judith Miles; James and Judy Miles, and George Miles, all of Glade Valley; and sixteen grandchildren sixteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. MOXLEY Mr. Rufus Junior (June) Moxley, age 61, of 3438 U.S. Hwy 21S., Glade Valley, N.C., died Wednesday evening, July 5, 2000, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He is survived by his wife: Lojean Jones Moxley of the home; five sisters and four brothers-in-law: Betty Lou and Elgin Jones of Glade Valley, Jenny Lee Edwards of Sparta, Wanda and Dwight Jones of Sparta, Evelyn and Carl Dean Johnson of Ennice, N.C., Louise and Charles Caudill of Jefferson, N.C.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law: Clinton and Leola Moxley of Carolina Beach, N.C., Joe and Ramah Lee Moxley of Sparta, and Tommy Moxley of Glade Valley; special mother-in-law: Mrs. David (Eula) Jones of Sparta; and a host of relatives, friends, several nieces and nephews. CAUDILL Mr. Harold Don Caudill, age 64, of 914 St. Michael Drive, Gambrills, Maryland, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in the Riverview Nursing Home in Essex, Md. He is survived by three sons: Joseph Lee Caudill of Gambrills, Md., Keith Brian Caudill and Randal Kevin Caudill both of Pasadena, Md.; seven grandchildren; his mother: Mrs. Alda Caudill of Piney Creek, NC; and one brother: Bill Caudill. He was preceded in death by his wife: Patricia Ann Caudill, and one sister: Janice Tickle. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Russell Mabe officiating.
