CROUSE Mrs. Donna Ward Crouse, age 82, of 151 Lucas St., Sparta, N.C., died Wednesday afternoon, April 28, 1999 at her home. She was the widow of Robert Earl Crouse. She is survived by one son, Jackson Earl Crouse of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Alicia and Jerry Suddreth of Spartanburg, S.C.; four grandchildren, Donna Edwards, Wayne Crouse, Karen McGrady and Sandra Combs; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph and Gene Ward, both of Independence, Va.; two sisters, Zelle Sparks and Marie Hudson, both of Sparta, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survives. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home place, 151 Lucas St. Sparta.

BILLINGS Mr. James Ervin Billings, age 63, of 104 Old Quarry Rd. Sparta, N.C., died Monday evening, April 26, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Charlie Wynn of Crockett, Va.; one son, Gary Billings of Mouth of Wilson, Va.; his mother, Zollie Rector Billings of Sparta, N.C.; two sisters, Lockie Boyles of Fries, Va., and Iva Jean Billings of Marion, Va.; one brother, Bill Billings of Sparta, N.C.; one half-brother, Larry Rector of Eden, N.C.; two half-sisters, Vina Hamm of Eden, N.C., and Gracie Ross of Lenoir, N.C.; a special niece and friend, Wilma Roark and Ted Burnsed, of Sparta, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday evening, April 29, 1999, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Salem Cemetery near Independence, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

HALSEY Mr. James Franklin Halsey, age 79, of Ashe Living Center, Jefferson, N.C., died Sunday evening, April 25, 1999, in that facility. He is survived by four daughters, Carleta Halsey, Judy Halsey and Jaylene Warden, all of Piney Creek, N.C., and Debbie Absher of Sparta, N.C.; one step-daughter, Diane Pendry of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; four brothers, Robert, Henry, Bert and Artie Halsey, all of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Rose Zella Bryan of Roanoke, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survives. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday evening, April 27, 1999 at 7:30 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of a daughter, Jaylene Warden, 9721 N.C. Hwy 113, Piney Creek, N.C. The family requests no flowers, however, memorials may be made to Grandview Memorial Funeral Home for funeral expenses.

MURPHY Mr. E.J. Murphy, age 66, 2070 Senic Valley Rd., Glade Valley, N.C., died Saturday afternoon, April 17, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Georgia Taylor Murphy of the home; two daughters, Phyllis Davis and Brenda Driggers, both of High Point, N.C.; one son, David Murphy of Glade Valley, N.C.; three grandsons; three brothers, E.R. Murphy and Donald Murphy, both of Ennice, N.C., and Jackie Murphy of Galax, Va.; one sister: Lois Murphy of Dobson, N.C.; one step-daughter, Gail Long of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; one step-son, Dale Baugus of Sparta, N.C.; and four step-granddaughters. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11:00 A.M. at the Mt. Vale Cemetery near Galax, Va. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 P.M. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

LONG Little Tucker Ray Long of 14 McMillan Lane, Sparta, N.C., died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He is survived by his parents, Amanda Bare of Sparta, N.C, and Jason Long of Roaring Gap, N.C.; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Marie Long of Roaring Gap, N.C.; his maternal grandparents, Dannie and Nadine Bare of Sparta, N.C.; one brother, Dakota Long of Roaring Gap, N.C. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Liberty Knob Baptist Church Cemetery near Roaring Gap, N.C. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

PARSONS Mr. Seabert Cornelius Parsons, age 64, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, N.C., died Friday evening, April 16, 1999, at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Diann and Mitch Bare of Crumpler, N.C.; Jane and Robert Wood of Wilkesboro, N.C.; Betty Sue and John Choate of Glade Valley, N.C., Roxanne Parsons of Sparta, N.C.; five sons and daughters-in-law, Lonnie Parsons, Ronnie and Tammy Parsons, Tim and Sondra Parsons, and Terry Parsons, all of Sparta, N.C., Sebert Jr. and Louise Parsons of Wilkesboro, N.C.; his mother, Callie Mae Parsons of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three sisters, Jacquline Molk of Martinsville, Va., Betty Lou Shaw of Pennsylvania and Patsy Cortner of Tenn.; and three brothers, Kyle, Bobby and Charles Parsons, all of Pennsylvania. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel in Abingdon, Va. Burial will follow in the Counts Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services in Abingdon, Va.

FINNEY Mrs. Clyde Brown Finney, age 88, of 3026 Hwy 221, Sparta, N.C., died Friday evening, April 16, 1999, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by her husband, George T. Finney of the home; one daughter, Katy Finney of Sparta, N.C.; and four sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Mary Finney, James and Sue Finney, Danny and Ella Mae Finney all of Sparta, N.C., and Michael and Beverley Finney of Lenoir, N.C. Ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceeded in death by two grandsons, Robert Finney and Stanley Osborne. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 1999, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Shiloh Cemetery Fund c/o George T. Finney.

BLEVINS Mr. Robert V. (Bob) Blevins, age 80, of 1137 Lazy Branch Rd., Ennice, N.C., died Saturday evening at his residence. He is survived by two daughters, Tommye Sue Wiles of Sparta, N.C., and Janet L. Nichols, of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandsons: Stephen Wiles of Boston, Mass. and Scott (Bo) Nichols of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Alvis (Slick) Blevins of Piney Creek, N.C., and Sid and Doris Blevins of Yadkinville, N.C.; his step-mother, Grace Choate of Sparta, N.C.; two half sisters, Blanche Edwards and Carol Howard, both of Sparta, N.C.; and special friends and caregivers, Roger and Mary Segraves and their daughter, Martha of Ennice, N.C. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Piney Creek, N.C. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany or to Alleghany Memorial Hospital Foundation. The family will be at the home of Tommye Sue Wiles, 128 Mitchell Mtn. Rd., Sparta, N.C.

JONES Mrs. Jessie Church Jones, age 93, of Laurel Springs, NC, died Thursday, April 8, 1999 in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, NC. She was the widow of Bryant Jones. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Grace Mabe of Laurel Springs, NC and Mrs. Hazel Darnell of Piney Creek, NC; one son, Richard Jones of Laurel Springs, NC; and one sister, Mrs. Roy Reed of Laurel Springs, NC. Seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 11, 1999, at 2:00 P.M. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Russell Mabe and Rev. Dean Adams officiating. Burial will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, April 10, 1999, from 7-9 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, NC. Flowers will be appreciated or Memorial Contributions may be made to the Cranberry Cemetery Fund, C/O Russell Mabe, 1333 Elk Knob Road, Laurel Springs, NC 28644.

LAUFFER Mrs. Effie Patton Lauffer, age 95, of 43 Transou St., Sparta, N.C., died Monday morning April 5, 1999, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta, N.C. She was the widow of Alfred Lauffer. She is survived by some very special friends and relatives who have contributed to her long life and happiness. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning, April 7, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. A general funeral ceremony of the Order of the Easter Star will be conducted by the Alleghany Chapter # 273 following the funeral services. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery near Roaring Gap, N.C. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Memolrial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Sunday School Class or to the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church Youth Trust.

THOMPSON Mrs. Dorothy Weems Thompson, age 73, of Laurel, Mississippi, died Friday morning, April 2, 1999, in Laurel, Mississippi. She is survived by her husband, Dan Thompson of the home; daughter Carol Combs and husband Ray of Greensboro, N.C.; daughter Dawn Thompson and husband Guy Neff of Orland, Florida; three granddaughters, Heather Sims and husband Blake, Tabitha Combs and Courtney Neff; three nieces, Sharon Hudson, Patricia Furner and Dorothy Weems; and one nephew, Brian Weems. Funeral services will be conducated Thursday, April 8, 1999, at 11:30 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. A private commital service will be held Thursday evening at Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Waynesboro Presbyterian Church or your preferred charity.
