COMBS Mrs. Mary Johnson Combs, age 89 of 431 N. Main St., Sparta, N.C., died Friday evening, June 29th., at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Lester Combs. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Wanda and Wayne Cleary, Betty Combs Hines and William A. Hines, all of Sparta; two grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Martha Cleary of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Waynna and Greg Wyatt of Sparta; a brother-in-law, Clay Combs of Kansas; and a sister-in-law, Tavie Hein of Maryland. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The Rev. Rawley W. Amburn and Rev. Russell Mabe will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta and at other times at the homeplace, 431 North Main St. Sparta. SHAW James W. Shaw, age 75, of 5704 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, NC, died Thursday evening, June 28th, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by seven sons and daughters-in-law: Jay and Joyce Shaw of Sparta, Ray and Wanda Shaw of Sparta, Alvin and Lucy Shaw of State Road, Brian and Sherry Shaw of Sparta, Lynn and Donna Shaw of Glade Valley, Allen and Carollyn Shaw of Sparta and Dennis and Dana Shaw of Sparta; two daughters and a son-in-law: Carolyn Shaw of Winston-Salem and Margaret and Bobby Absher of Glade Valley; four sisters and brothers-in-law: Martha and Mack Edwards of Ennice, Mabel and Bill Hamm of Sparta, Nellie and Edwin Ketterling of Glade Valley, and Nancy and Bobby Wooten of Glade Valley; five brothers and sisters-in-law: Rev. Everett and Kathy Shaw of Glade Valley, Bill and Dorothy Shaw of Glade Valley, Rev. Donald and Viola Shaw of Sparta, Russell and Peggy Shaw of Glade Valley and Marvin and Betty Shaw of Glade Valley; 21 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson: Bobby Absher. COX Mrs. Grace Crouse Cox, age 70, of 580 Cox Run, Sparta, died Wednesday, June 27th, at her home. She was the widow of Leff Forrest Cox. She is survived by her father and step-mother: Walter G. and Elsie Crouse of Glade Valley, NC; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Walter C. Jr. and Betty Ann Crouse, and Stanley Gene and Jeannie Crouse all of Glade Valley, NC; a sister-in-law: Kina Cox of Atglen, Pa.; and three nieces, one nephew, one great-niece and two great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial to follow in the Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Everett Shaw will officiate. WILLIAMS Mr. Bert Williams, age 90, of 463 Irwin Grocery Rd., Laurel Springs, N.C., died Tuesday, June 26, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Collins Williams. He is survived by two daughters, Jerolene Richardson of Sparta and Betty Atwood of Salisbury, N.C.; one son, Bill Williams of Laurel Springs, N.C.; one brother, Fred Williams of Lilesville, N.C.; five grandchildren, two step- grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in the Stratford community. MOUNT Mary Mount of Sunbridge Nursing Home, Sparta, NC, formerly of Chesterfield, New Jersey, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 21st, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 25, 2001, at 10:30 AM at the Page Funeral Home in Burlington, New Jersey. Burial will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington, New Jersey. He is survived by his wife: Ralene Billings two daughters: Christina Billings and Hope Billings, of the home. one son: Brandon Billings of Ventura, California\ His father and step-mother: Thomas and Erma Billings of Charlotte, N.C.three sisters: Debbie Todd of Charleston, S.C., Renee Lawing of Indian Trail, N.C., and Kimberly White of Charlotte, N.C. one brother: Marty Billings of Charlotte, N.C. His grandmother: Mattie Dickens of Sparta, N.C. He was preceded in death by his mother: Mary Lou Senter Billings. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, June 23rd., at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. WAGoneR Mrs. Faye Brooks Wagoner, age 87, of 5747 Glade Valley Road, Ennice, NC, died Tuesday morning, June 19th, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of James Wiley Wagoner. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Paul and Sue Wagoner of Sparta; one daughter: Clara Frances Smith of Sparta, NC; one sister: Mae Crouse of Bel Air, Md; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 21st, at 2:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Crab Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. He is survived by his wife: Nell Weaver Caldwell of the home; three sons: Michael Caldwell of Winston-Salem, N.C., Joseph Caldwell, Jr. of Sparta and George Caldwell of Piney Creek; two daughters: Carolyn Lovill of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Carmelita Dimeler of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; one sister: Nina Brown of Darlington, Md.; twelve grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. MIDDAUGH Mrs. Edna Busic Middaugh, age 84, of 371 Little River Dr., Sparta, N.C., died Friday morning, June 8, at her home. She was the widow of Robert Owen Middaugh. She is survived by two sisters: Nannie L. Busic of Parkwood Retirement Center in Elkin, N.C., and Edith Busic Richardson of Sparta; one brother and four sisters-in-law: Rodney and Doris Busic of Sparta, Grace M. Reigle of Sugar Creek, Ohio, Marie Busic of Piney Creek and Pat Busic of Sparta.; and several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. Rev. Thom Burleson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. He is survived by his wife: Velma Trawick Hopkins of the home; one daughter: Mary Katheryn Callaham of Washington, D.C.; one granddaughter: Melissa Blumenkranz of New Orleans, La.; and one sister: Elsie Bickley of Louisa, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 8, at 2 PM at the Sparta First Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the Sparta Cemetery. Rev. Lon Leatherland and Dr. Jim Pollard will officiate. Military Rites will be conducted at the Graveside by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, the family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church. She is survived by her husband: John M. Crouse of the home; one daughter and son-in-law: Debbie and Mike Edwards of Wilkesboro; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Steve and Melissa Royall of Wilkesboro, N.C. and Jeff Royall of Jefferson; six grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law: Wesley and Jeanette Anders of Ennice; and three sisters and brothers-in-law: Wilma and Howard Greene of Galax, Va., Wanda and Doug Shropshire of Mebane and Joyce and Bob Gillespie of Ennice. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, June 8, at 11:00 a.m. at the Little Pine Church of the Brethren with Burial in the Cherry Lane Cemetery. LANDRETH Mr. Walter Vance Landreth, age 52, of 2275 Bald Knob Rd., Sparta, died Sunday Morning, June 3, 2001, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Susan Quigley Landreth; a son and daughter-in -law, Walter Vance Landreth, Jr. and Patricia G. Landreth of Bear, Delaware; a daughter, Tina Colette Landreth of Bear, Delaware; one sister and brother-in-law, Jodi Lynn and Richard Bruce Jones; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Maynard Landreth, Sr. and Wanda Blevins Landreth of Sparta; and a brother, James Maynard "J.M." Landreth, Jr. of Sparta. He was born on Oct. 6, 1948, in North Wilkesboro, NC. He received the Purple Heart while serving his country in the Vietnam War. Walt's wishes were to not have a funeral service, but in celebration of his life, there will be a gathering of family and friends at his home on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, from 6 til 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be sent to the Disabled American Veterans, 251 North Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27102. She is survived by one daughter: Debbie Salmon of Sparta; one son: Ricky Absher of Sparta; three grandchildren: Jessica Price, Anna Mae Absher and Curtis Mullis; one great-grandchild: Johnny Ray Price; four brothers: Vance Ellis, Larry Ellis and Marvin Ellis all of McGrady and Howard Ellis of Hays; three sisters: Mary Tedder of Crickett, Jean Wood of Traphill and Joyce Fortner of Moravian Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 4, at 11 am at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Taylor Cemetery in Wilkes County. The family will receive friends Sunday evening, June 3, from 7-9 pm at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
