ARMENTROUT Mrs. Marjorie Choate Armentrout died August 31, 2001, at the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Armentrout was born September 7, 1913, in Alleghany County to the late Tom and Lula Cheek Choate. She attended Mars Hill College, Stetson University, and Appalachian State University. She was a music teacher in Alleghany County until her retirement, and also taught private piano and organ lessons in her home. Mrs. Armentrout had devoted over 50 years to playing both the organ and piano at the First Baptist Church in Sparta where she was a member. She was a member of the Sparta Woman Club, the National Society DAR, the National Society Colonial Dames, the National Huguenot Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, the North Carolina Retired School Personnel Association, and the Alleghany Unit of Retired School Personnel. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Norma Richardson and Max and Judy Armentrout; two grandchildren, Debbie Richardson and Tommy Richardson; and one great-granddaughter, Tiffany Richardson. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sparta. Interment will follow at the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday night at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. The family may be contacted at the home of Tom and Norma Richardson, 121 Mapleview Drive, Sparta. Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to a charity of the donor choice. MONTGOMERY Mrs. Josephine Wagoner Montgomery, age 81, of 413 Carson Creek Rd., Low Gap, N.C., died Monday morning, Aug. 27, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Abie Montgomery. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Buddy Robinson of Galax, Va., and Helen and Dennis Flippen of Low Gap, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law; Loyd (Buck) and Drema Montgomery, and Johnny and Debbie Montgomery, all of Ennice, N.C.; four sisters, Vella Wiles of N. Wilkesboro, Blanche Reeves of Galax, Sadie Wagoner of Galax, and Hazel Jones of High Point, N.C., two brothers, John Wagoner of Galax, and Jim Wagoner of Low Gap; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Galyean Cemetery in Baywood, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of Helen and Dennis Flippen,424 Carson Creek Road, at Low Gap. BUGIELSKI Mrs. Mary Ann Triplett Bugielski, age 54, of 138 Atwood Street, Sparta, NC, died Sunday, August 19th, at her home. She was the widow of Tony Bugielski. She is survived by one daughter: Sabrina Arnold of Sparta, NC; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Jeff Bugielski of Belmont, NC, Jimmy and Robin Bugielski of Sparta; three grandchildren: Chad Bugielski, Leah Bugielski and Brianna Arnold; one brother and sister-in-law: Michael and Debbie Hudson of Sparta, NC; special nieces and a nephew: Wendy, Amy and Alan Hudson all of Sparta, NC; step-father: Arthur Hudson of Sparta, NC; and a special caregiver: Tonya Andrews of Sparta, NC. She was preceded in death by a grandson: Chase Bugielski. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 22nd, at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial to follow in the Whitehead Joines Cemetery. Rev. BRADY Mr. Floyd Thomas Brady, age 84, of Ridgeview Apartments # 3E, Sparta, NC, died Friday, August 17th, at his home. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law: Precious and Charles Cassell of Independence, Va.; five sons and daughters-in-law: John and Debbie Brady and Ken and Peggy Brady all of Sparta, NC, Rick and Pam Brady, Roger and Lauren Brady and Mike Brady all of Laurel Springs, NC; one brother and sister-in-law: John Landrum and Pauline Brady of Inman, SC; a special niece and nephew: Bessie and Kilgore McAbee of Inman, SC; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife: Lessie Brady. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 19th, at 4:00 PM at the Mt. Carmel Church of the Brethren with Burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. COX Mrs. Kate Caudill Cox, age 86, of 898 Vox Road, Sparta, NC, died Thursday, August 16th, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Carl Cox. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law: Lillie Atwood, Janie and Dwayne Murphy and Louise and Roger Higgins all of Sparta, NC; one son and daughter-in-law: John R. and Evalena Cox of Sparta, NC; one sister: Kina Cox of Atglen, Pa.; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son: James Cox. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 19th, at 2:00 PM at the Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. Elder Dale Greene will officiate. SPURLIN Mrs. Matilda Mae Brannock Spurlin, age 90, of the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Independence, Va., formerly of Sparta, died Tuesday evening, August 14 at the Center. She was the widow of Lonnie Spurlin. She was preceded in death by two sons. She is survived by one daughter: Helen Winesett of Winter Garden, Fla.; three sons and a daughter-in-law: Clifton Spurlin of King, NC, Golden Spurlin of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Luther and Pam Spurlin of Ennice, N.C.; one granddaughter: Angela Surguine of Clermont, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren: Holly Surguine, Mandy Surguine, and Justin Surguine, all of Clermont, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon August 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of a son and daughter-in-law; Luther and Pam Spurlin, 8804 Glade Valley Rd., Ennice, N.C.

STEVENSON Mr. Raymond M. Stevenson, age 56, of Maplewood Apt. # 25, Sparta, NC, died Monday, August 13, in the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by a special friend: Bernice Brown of Sparta, NC; one brother: Roger Stevenson of Delaware; one sister: Joyce Steiss of Philadelphia, Pa.; three half-sisters: Anona Hash of Independence, Va., Kathy Martin and Patty Reilly, both of New Jersey; and two half-brothers: Joseph Fulleylove of Maryland and Johnny Miller of New Jersey. Graveside Services will be conducted Thursday, August 16 at 11:00 AM at the Sparta Cemetery. Friends may come by the Funeral Home at 10:00 AM Thursday morning to pay their respects. WHITE Mrs. Vina Lowe White, age 97, of Glade Valley, NC, died Monday Morning, August 13th, at her home. She was the widow of Loyd Samuel White. She is survived by one daughter: Mary Ann Lowe Hall of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: Roy and Mattie Lowe of Sparta, NC; one sister: Etta Evans of Glade Valley, NC; a special niece: Carol Jean Bottomley; a great-niece: Kathy Wood and two special great-great-nephews: Chase Wood and Zachary Wood. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 15th, at 2:00 PM at the Glade Creek Union Baptist Church with Burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. DUNCAN Mrs. Emily Logan Duncan, age 93, of 3950 Brinton Place, Charlotte, NC, died Sunday morning, August 5th, in the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. She was the widow of Dean F. Duncan. She is survived by two sons: Hugh M. Duncan of Charlotte, NC and Dean F. Duncan, Jr. of Mt. Holly, NC; one daughter: Harriett Duncan of Warsaw, NC; one brother: Charles O. Logan of Boyton Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, August 7th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Thom Burleson officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta is in charge of the funeral arrangements. WOODRUFF Mr. Paul Woodruff, age 88, of 394 Camp Butler Rd., Glade Valley, N.C., died Saturday morning, August 4th at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. Mr. Woodruff was born in Alleghany County, May 16, 1913, the youngest of nine children born to James Frank and Olivia Cockerham Woodruff. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife: Grace Gentry Woodruff of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law: James Adron and Ruby Woodruff of Lewisville, N.C., and Franklin and Carol Woodruff of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Clara and Kenneth Pruitt of Winston-Salem, N.C., Norma and Clayton Brooks of Clemmons, N.C., and Pauline and Bruce Shepherd of Lewisville, N.C.; seven grandchildren and spouses: Danny and Betty Woodruff of Kentucky, Steve Brooks of Durham, NC, Catherine and Dale Stancil of Winston-Salem, NC, Jennifer and Matthew Hagen of Morehead City, NC, Janet and James Carnell of Raleigh, NC, Jonathan Paul Shepherd of Chapel Hill, NC and Megan Shepherd of Chapel Hill, NC; and four great-grandchildren: Bruce and Melissa Woodruff, and Lawson and Paul Stancil. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 6th, at 11:00 AM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Don Richardson, Mrs. Peggy Woodruff and Dr. Guy Hipp will officiate. PORTER Mrs. Annie Wagoner Porter, age 90, a resident of the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va., died Friday, August 3rd, at the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Lewis and Marian Porter of Galax, Va.; three daughters: Peggy Hayslett of Sparta, NC, Frances Easterling and Mary Lou Porter, both of Lexington, Ky; one brother: Leftridge Wagoner of Sparta, NC; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 5th, at 4:00 PM at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Burial in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Dr. Jim Pollard will officiate. LANDRETH Mr. John Basil Landreth, age 81, of 718 Independence, Rd., Sparta, N.C., died Friday evening, August 2nd, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. Mr. Landreth was born November 23, 1919, to James Lonnie and Lula Irwin Landreth in Alleghany County. He graduated from Piney Creek High School in 1937. He served four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a well-known barber in Sparta for 50 years. He was a member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and elder and was a member of the choir. He is survived by his wife: Lois Reeves Landreth of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: John Mitchell and Jane Landreth of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law: Jane and Alan Wyatt of Sparta and Julie and Curtis Duncan of Sparta; five grandchildren: Thomas Landreth, Mitchell and Elizabeth Wyatt, and Hannah and Rebecca Duncan; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Bill and Betty Landreth of N. Wilkesboro and Lon Max and Dixie Landreth of Concord, N.C.; and one sister and brother-in-law: Laurene and Charles Warden of Newark, Delaware. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 5th, at 2:00 PM at the Sparta Presbyterian Church with Burial to follow in the Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. Dr. James Frazier and Rev. Thom Burleson will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, August 4th, from 6-8 pm at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
